PHILOSOPHY“Borzalino was founded in 1976 but our company roots date well back, deeply encased in the great artisan tradition that for centuries has made Tuscan furniture production well known in the world.

In line with this heritage we have been producing upholstered furniture, design sofas and armchairs, with care and passion, maintaining the highest quality standard, and the values of a passion for a work well done, two core components which are the essence of genuine Made in Italy. The great wealth of knowledge and experience of our founder Galeazzo Fedi is now in the hands of his wife Romana, his daughter Cristiana and his grandson Matteo.

“International markets have always been the business target of our company since inception”.Starting from nearby markets with France (today featuring 39 point of sales) and the Netherlands (as of today with a point-of-sale network of 75 stores), then all the way to the Baltic market of Lithuania under the magic of the northern lights, and now spanning across Europe from Portugal to Russia.Now under the leadership of the new Managing Director, Mrs. Cristiana Fedi, the business horizon has been constantly expanded on a global scale starting from the emerging markets in West Africa and later eyeing East towards Asia, initially with a presence in the Gulf states of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, then in India, and now targeting Singapore.“I like getting the proof – says Cristiana Fedi – that wherever our sofas are available, the BORZALINO style can blend with different local cultures and styles. “When I was a kid – Matteo recalls – I used to spend my afternoons in the tailoring ward of the company, and I kept watching, and observing …”“I used to look closely at the tailors handling colorful fabrics matching with equally colorful reels of thread, with workmanship and cleverness, and with the help of a sewing machine, those fabrics were taking different shapes whether in the form of an armrest, a pillow, and ultimately turning the would-be dress into a brand new sofa. I was listening to all the noise coming from afar, from the sawmill ward, where even today the templates for new models are made ready, and at that time that workshop was off-limits for me because they used to tell me that in order to get there I needed to be taller and eat a lot of ribollita” (ribollita is Tuscany’s most famous soup, a traditional twice-cooked vegetable soup).“Flash-forward to present time and after eating a lot of ribollita, and still enjoying it, today I do love spending long hours in that tailoring workshop, now supervising how a drawing takes the shape of a new BORZALINO sofa thanks to those skilled hands and state-of-the-art machines. Q Being a relative newcomer to the Asian

market, can you define the Borzalino style for homeowners here?

A The Borzalino style and

philosophy focuses on our

customised designs, which are

made to the requirements of

each customer. As much as 80

to 100 per cent of the furniture

we create can be tailor-made

to your exact specifications.

The homeowner enjoys

freedom in selecting their

choice of fabric, wood

finishing, leather, buttons and

nails to be used for any of

the designs in our collection,

such as the Moat sofa or the

Frisbee chair. We also work

with designers to offer a mix of

interpretations and influences,

including redefining classics

such as the chesterfield sofa

and the retro style, along with a

surprising twist in colours.

How long does each piece take to produce?From order to delivery, it can

take five to six weeks. Because

of the detailed customisation

process, it can take two days

to change a standard element,

such as the type and colour of

the piping.

What is the most rewarding thing for you to be a part of the family-run business?Although I studied information

science, I’ve always loved art.

I have creativity in my blood,

which I think I inherited from my

grandfather, who is the founder

of the company. I am glad to be

a part of this artistic process in

creating premium furniture and

every time I see the results from

months and months of work,

through thinking, drawing and

production at the factory,

it makes me happy because

I can see that our business is

going in the direction.

What is a key trend in furniture design right now?In my opinion I think that

homeowners are looking

more and more to the fashion

industry for ideas, and that is

why Borzalino is collaborating

with iconic fashion labels like

Jim Thompson for The Moat

sofa. You’ll notice that the trends

in furnishing design are often

heavily influenced by what is

seen on the runways. This year,

there are a lot of animal prints and

camouflage in fashion. so, next

year, we may likely see animal

prints making a comeback in

furniture designs.

What are some of your favourite Borzalino designs?One of my favourites, which is

also a bestseller, is the Frisbee

swivel chair. Another popular

design is the Moat sofa, which

offers hundreds of compositions

due to its modular design (parts

of the sofa can be moved to the

left or the right). Another highlight

for me is the Atena sofa, which

has rounded edges and a clean

silhouette. It just looks so inviting

and cosy that you can spend a

whole day lounging in its folds.

The look of Hamilton Conte is timeless,

irregularities and leaf veins contrast against
