With the winter holidays just around the corner, however, it’s also the month to plan ahead – to book that ski trip to Burlington or Mont-Tremblant, or perhaps even a sun dash to Orlando-Melbourne, on Florida’s Space Coast. All these seasonal destinations are available to book now. In this issue of re:porter, we fly over to Boston to investigate the city’s thriving tech and biotech start-up culture; to Mont-Tremblant for a frosty ice-fishing and animal-trapping adventure; to Toronto to explore its rich architectural heritage; and to Halifax to meet with acclaimed architect Omar Gandhi. REMAKING HISTORY Isamu Noguchi, Archaic/Modern

“We are a landscape of all we have seen,” said the American sculptor Isamu Noguchi, and his abstract works in stone were heavily influenced by ancient architecture, from Egyptian pyramids to Buddhist temples. The 70 pieces in the Smithsonian’s show (running from November 11, 2016 to March 19, 2017) combine the primeval and postmodern – to timeless effect. « Nous sommes le paysage de ce que nous avons vu », a dit le sculpteur Isamu Noguchi dont les œuvres abstraites sont influencées par l’Antiquité, des pyramides égyptiennes aux temples bouddhistes. This new Yorkville restaurant boasts an entirely plant-based menu, courtesy of partner chef David Lee, of Nota Bene fame. That doesn’t mean assiette d’aspidistra, fern fondants or giant hogweed hash, but rather carrot hot dogs, coconut ceviche, watermelon poke, juice-based cocktails and various creatively seared, braised, grilled and smoked ways with tubers, brassicas and legumes. “Plants are the new meat,” says Lee, and the fruits (and veggies) of his labours should put the “fond” into frondescence. It’s less pejorative than brown-nosers, and less obviously comedic than red-nosers; but the reason that Nova Scotians are equated with honkers of a cerulean shade retains more than a whiff of mystery. The nickname first reared its (cobalt-conked) head in 1785 when a preacher named Reverend Jacob Bailey was quoted as saying that he didn’t like “the violent contentions between the Loyalists and the old inhabitants called blue noses.” Could it have originated in the thick, blue-dyed wool mittens worn by fishermen, which left a tinge of navy on a runny nose’s nethers when deployed in a wiping capacity? Could it be an homage to a blue-skinned potato that was once grown in the Annapolis Valley? Could it simply be a tribute to the legendary frigidity of a Nova Scotian winter and its ability to reorder the basic palette of the average proboscis? The jury’s snout, sorry, out.

Tell us about Oddfellows Barbershop.I come here every week and a half to get a trim, for reasons beyond just getting a good haircut. It’s a sociable, characterful, totally unpolished place, hidden behind a chain-link fence, frequented by regulars, and where you can be party to this hilarious, raw conversation.

Set the scene for us.Well, you’ll be sitting there in a retro barber chair, hearing the guy next to you share his deepest secrets, with the owner’s dog watching you from a red chaise longue. Oh, and there’s a mini skate ramp in the back, so there’ll be a couple of guys flying around on a skateboard, too. It’s basically the anti-salon, and a place I go to when I need to escape pretension and simplify my life for a while.

You grew up in Brampton, Ontario. How did you end up in Halifax? I lived in Toronto for three years, but it seemed too obvious, somehow. And I knew of Dalhousie University’s good reputation, so I applied to do a master’s degree there. Having grown up in the suburbs, the wilderness of Nova Scotia appealed to me. My architecture studio is now opening a second office in Toronto, but my heart will always be in Halifax.

What do you love most about Halifax?I see it as a bit of an underdog city, with plenty of grit to it. It has an extraordinary maritime history and these dramatic coasts, but also a strong arts community and a real culture of craft. It’s an industrial, hard-working, seafaring town, but with this vibrant creative spirit. And that’s an interesting combination.

Are there any other Halifax spots that are special to you?Duncan’s Cove is where I take my friends that come to visit. It’s rocky and often very foggy, with waves crashing against the cliffs – a great place to go hiking. I’m definitely drawn to harsh, dramatic landscapes.

How does your architecture capture the spirit of its environment?I use an age-old, rural building vernacular as my starting point – those simple structures that have been around forever. I might design a plain gabled building or use weathered cedar shingles for a roof, subtly adapting familiar forms to make them my own. I suppose there’s a sharpness, or starkness, to some of my architecture, too, that plays well with its Nova Scotia surroundings.

Décrivez un peu les lieux.Eh bien, vous prenez place dans un fauteuil de barbier, et vous écoutez votre voisin révéler tous ses secrets, sous le regard du chien du propriétaire, vautré sur une chaise longue. Derrière, il y a une mini rampe de planche à roulettes et on entend des gars qui s’entraînent. En bref, c’est l’inverse d’un salon de coiffure, c’est là où je viens pour échapper aux contraintes et simplifier ma vie.

Vous venez de Brampton, en Ontario. Comment êtes-vous arrivé à Halifax ?J’ai vécu à Toronto pendant trois ans, mais cela m’a semblé un peu cliché. Et ayant eu

vent de la bonne réputation de l’Université Dalhousie, j’ai décidé d’y faire une maîtrise. Ayant grandi en banlieue, j’adore les grands espaces de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Même si mon cabinet d’architecture ouvre un second bureau à Toronto, mon cœur sera toujours à Halifax.

Qu’est-ce qui vous plaît le plus de Halifax ?Je la vois comme une ville sauvage, avec du caractère. Elle a une histoire maritime fascinante et des côtes fabuleuses, mais aussi une communauté artistique forte et une culture artisanale. C’est une ville industrielle,

tournée vers la mer et qui travaille dur, avec en plus de la créativité.

Y a-t-il d’autres coins de Halifax que vous aimez ?Duncan Cove, j’y emmène tous mes amis en visite. C’est rocailleux et souvent brumeux, avec les vagues qui frappent la falaise – génial pour la randonnée. Les paysages rudes et spectaculaires m’attirent.

Comment votre architecture reflète-t-elle l’esprit de cet environnement ?Mon point de départ est une vieille bâtisse rurale, typique – une structure qui semble défier le temps. Je dessine un bâtiment avec un pignon simple ou j’utilise des tuiles en cèdre pour un toit, en faisant subtilement miennes des formes familières. Je suppose que certaines de mes réalisations ont un aspect dur ou austère qui s’intègre bien dans l’environnement de la Nouvelle-Écosse.

The de facto male style in my hipper-than-thou Montréal neighbourhood can be best described as “urban woodsman.” Everywhere you look, it’s a flurry of flannel and facial hair. At the coffee shop, you’ll find the per-fectly bearded as they skim latte froth, while dressed like they’re ready for stripping pelt.

Surrounded by this faux-outdoor feel in the city, I realize that maybe it’s time to get myself into the real outdoors. So, I head for the hills. My destination is Kanatha-Aki, a family-owned activity centre in the Laurentian region of Québec, to spend a day with a real trapper.

Located in Val-des-Lacs, about a 35-minute drive from the Mont-Tremblant ski resort on serpentine, snow-banked roads, and a world away from its relative glitz, Kanatha-Aki is like the northern version of that ranch in City Slickers. Here, instead of herding cattle, you can mush a team of sled dogs, sleep outside in teepees and get nose-to-steamy-snout with bison.

Arriving, I feel like I’ve suddenly time-travelled into what the Tremblant region might have been like long before the arrival of high-speed quads and a casino. Staring off into the distance, there are mountains in every direction, each a shade lighter the further away it is. Frozen lakes and ponds spot the land like spilled milk. The surrounding forest is thick with maple, pine and a spattering of ivory from the occasional stand of birch. My breath evaporates in the crisp winter air, along with any lingering city stress I’m carrying.

Expecting our guide for the day to be a grizzled-type character, perhaps covered in some pelts (not full The Revenant Leonardo DiCaprio, but close), I’m surprised when

Encerclé par ce look grands espaces en pleine ville, je réalise qu’il est temps de faire une excursion au grand air et je mets le cap sur les collines. Ma destination est Kanatha-Aki, un centre d’activités géré par une famille dans les Laurentides, au Québec, où je vais passer une journée avec un vrai trappeur.

Situé à Val-des-Lacs, à environ 35 minu-tes de la station de ski de Mont-Tremblant par des routes sinueuses bordées de congères, et à des lieues de son glamour relatif, Kanatha-Aki est comme une version nordique du ranch des Apprentis Cowboys. Au lieu de garder les vaches, il faut conduire un attelage de chiens, dormir dans des tipis et se retrou-ver nez à museau avec des bisons.

En arrivant, c’est comme si j’étais retourné en arrière, à l’époque où la région de Tremblant ne connaissait pas encore les quads et les casinos. De tous côtés, des mon-tagnes, dont la couleur pâlit en fonction de la distance. Lacs et étangs gelés parsèment le paysage tels des flaques de lait renversé. La forêt environnante abonde en érables, pins et quelques touches ivoires, fournies par des bosquets de bouleaux. Ma respiration s’éva-pore dans l’air hivernal vif, en même temps que tout mon stress urbain.

Je m’attends à ce que mon guide soit un trappeur vétéran, peut-être même vêtu de peaux (du genre DiCaprio dans Le Revenant), alors je suis surpris lorsque Jérémie nous

souhaite la bienvenue. Sa toque de fourrure et sa meute de chiens confirment qu’il est un trappeur en bonne et due forme, mais ce jeune a aussi un diplôme en gestion de la faune et biogéogra-phie environnementale.

Plus défenseur de l’environnement que trappeur (il pose toujours des pièges, mais il utilise tout dans l’animal qu’il capture, et uniquement pour se nourrir et s’habiller), Jérémie est sans doute aussi à l’aise à l’univer-sité que dans ces bois.

Les premières explorations des étendues sauvages du Québec, sont inextricablement liées au commerce des peaux, en particulier au XVIIe siècle, lorsqu’il fallait satisfaire la soif des Européens pour les toques en fourrure de cas-tor. Cette toquade était l’équivalent des jeans skinny modernes. Aujourd’hui, notre but n’est pas de piéger, mais de repérer la faune sauvage qui comprend lapins, ours noirs, lynx, renards, loups, orignaux et coyotes. Et de pêcher.

Jérémie fore facilement le premier de bien des trous dans le lac gelé sur lequel nous nous trouvons. La glace émet des craque-ments inquiétants sous l’effet de notre poids. « Aujourd’hui, le dîner sera délicieux, mais il faudra d’abord l’attraper », souligne Jérémie en nous montrant comment procéder. Nous érigeons une multitude de trépieds de bois multicolores au bout desquels nous attachons des lignes que nous jetons dans les trous.

Normalement, lorsque l’on pêche en hiver, on trouve refuge dans une cabane chauffée et on se tient chaud en buvant de la bière. Par bonheur, avant longtemps la canne se met à vibrer, signe d’une prise. Je ferre pour découvrir une jolie truite mouche-tée au bout de ma ligne. Ses tons rouge et bleu fluo chatoient comme une tache d’huile.

More conservationist than trapper (he still sets traps but uses any animals he catches in their entirety, and strictly for his own food and clothing), Jérémie is someone whom I could picture navigating the halls of a university as easily as these woods.

The early exploration of the wilds of Québec is inextricably linked to the fur trade, especially in the 17th century, when the race was on to satiate European demand for the broad-brimmed beaver hat. All the rage, it was the fashion equivalent of skinny jeans today. The goal for our day isn’t to trap but rather to track the local wildlife population, which includes rabbit, black bear, lynx, fox, wolf, moose and coyote. And to catch fish.

Jérémie effortlessly augers the first of many holes into the frozen lake on which we’re standing. Unnerving thuds rumble from below as the ice settles underneath our weight. “Lunch today will be delicious, but first you have to hook it,” proclaims Jérémie as he proceeds to show us how to ice-fish. We set up a small army of cantilevered, thin pieces of brightly coloured wood attached with dangling, baited fishing lines, which we drop into the holes.

Normally in the winter fishing process, this is when you’d take refuge in a heated shack and warm up with cheap beer. Luckily, it’s not long before the wood starts to bob, signalling a catch. I pull up on the tight line to find a nice-sized brook trout on its end. Its neon-coloured hues of reds and blues swirl like an oil stain.

gills in the direction of the tail, and in one swift motion empties the fish’s glistening, scarlet-coloured entrails onto the snow. Loki and Wendigo, his two loyal huskies, stand at attention, licking their chops, while waiting for Jérémie’s signal. My appetite gains a few hours of leeway as I watch the dogs gorge on their reward of Laurentian sushi, staining crimson the white fur of their muzzles.

Once we’ve all lifted our own lunch from the lake, we keep moving, following what would once have been a trapping line. The winding route, carpeted with fallen pine needles, skirts in and out of forest, and, except for the crunch of snow beneath our feet, all is silent.

We learn to identify the animal tracks we come across. The ones with deep claw marks are from wolverine. At the smaller, less vicious end of the wild-creature spectrum, we observe mice prints leading to a scattering of burnt-orange feathers, flagging where a red-tailed hawk would have found its intended prey.

We trail the side of a tea-coloured stream that gurgles beneath a thin sheet of ice, until we reach a massive beaver dam, almost Frank Gehry-like in its sweeping curves. The beavers had flooded this area, making it easier to float their cut branches and avoid predators. Admiring the work ethic of these flat-tailed architects, I hope for beaver hats to never make a comeback.

We loop back to the main lodge for lunch, and, surrounded by knotty pine walls and furniture, I sink into a wool-blanketed banquette, sipping hot cider from a cracked enamel mug. Slowly shedding layers of outdoor clothing as the wood stove’s crack-ling fire warms the room, I feel my cheeks ripen to a rosy glow. Our group waits with quiet pride for our earned trout to grill, while leafing through worn-edged pages of vintage nature guidebooks and stroking an array of animal pelts that we pass around. All is right in our adopted mountain world.

The day has allowed me to escape, if only for a few hours, the more modern traps of my smart phone, the office desk and traffic jams. I feel that serenity I’d been craving wash over me, which only a walk in the woods can evoke.

Nous apprenons à identifier les traces que nous voyons. Celles avec des marques de griffes prononcées appartiennent au carca-jou. À l’extrémité non prédatrice de la chaîne, nous observons les pas d’une souris qui conduisent à des plumes orange foncé, signe qu’une buse à queue rousse a trouvé sa proie.

Nous suivons la rive d’un cours d’eau couleur thé qui chante sous une fine couche de glace pour arriver à un barrage de castors énorme, qui pourrait être l’œuvre de Frank Gehry. Ces rongeurs ont inondé la zone pour faciliter le transport de leurs branches et dis-suader les prédateurs. En admirant l’activité de ces architectes à queue plate, je prie pour que les toques en peau de castor ne revien-nent jamais à la mode.

Pour le dîner, nous revenons à la cabane principale et, au milieu de murs en rondins et de meubles en pin, je me laisse choir sur une banquette habillée d’une couverture, en savourant une tasse de cidre chaud en émail craquelé. Le poêle à bois réchauffant la pièce, je me débarrasse de mes couches de vête-ments. Mes joues sont rosées. Notre groupe attend avec une fierté tranquille que ses truites cuisent, tout en feuilletant les pages écornées de vieux guides sur la nature et en caressant des fourrures que nous faisons circuler. Tout va bien dans notre univers montagnard adoptif.

Cette journée m’a permis d’échapper, durant quelques heures, aux pièges modernes que sont le téléphone mobile, le bureau et les embouteillages. Je me sens gagné par une sérénité convoitée, que seule une promenade dans les bois peut susciter.

Que ce soit délibéré ou non, chaque ville a souvent un style d’architecture caractéris-tique; les bâtisses en pierre peu élevées de Paris, les maisons en brique de New York à l’ombre des gratte-ciel ou les tours de Tokyo à perte de vue. Impossible d’ignorer le style de Toronto. Des maisons victoriennes côtoient les nouveaux condos en verre, les bâtiments néo-gothiques de l’université sont adossés à des structures brutalistes sévères. La revendication de la diversité de sa population semble s’appliquer aux immeu-bles de Toronto, ce qui est fait une des villes les plus intéressantes de la planète pour les amateurs de design et d’architecture.

Toronto est depuis longtemps une ville de premières architecturales. Whether intended or not, cities often have a defining architectural style: think of the historic, low-set brick buildings of Paris; New York City’s brownstones in the shadows of office towers; the skyscrapers of Tokyo that stretch as far as the eye can see. There is no overarching Toronto design. Victorian homes sit a stone’s throw from newly erected glass condos, and neo-Gothic university buildings mingle with stern brutalist structures. It seems that the city’s claim to diversity speaks to its buildings as well as its residents, making Toronto one of the most interesting cities in the world for architecture and design buffs.

Toronto has long been a city of architectural firsts. In 1906 – 70 years before the CN Tower became the tallest free-standing structure in the world – the 15-storey Trader’s Bank Building became the then-tallest construction in the British Empire. By 1931 that distinction went to the art deco Canadian Bank of Commerce Building; its 34 storeys held the record until the early 60s. Toronto was still a young city in a young country, and these impressive feats of engineering were a way to introduce the city to the world.

Frank Gehry may have built his fame abroad, but the star architect first called Toronto home. The designer of the acclaimed Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los

Angeles has also left his mark on his hometown: the Art Gallery of Ontario (evoking a glass-and-wood canoe) was an instant icon, and the upcoming Mirvish + Gehry

By the mid-20th century, these classic stone towers were joined by a new genera-tion of glass-and-steel megastructures, and great design was used to show that Toronto wasn’t just some provincial backwater – it wanted to be a leading global city. The Toronto-Dominion (TD) Centre, two imposing black monoliths designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the former Bauhaus director and modernist legend, was the city’s next great leap in design, and, 50 years later, it is still a sight to behold. “It set the stage for Toronto’s future,” says Joe Lobko, a partner at the architectural firm DTAH. “It was based on forward thinking and new expression.”

Over the next few decades, the TD Centre was joined by other modern wonders that still dominate the skyline,

Please describe Toronto architecture. It’s not showy, it’s not grandstanding. It’s street-friendly; it’s trying to accommodate this tremendous, burgeoning growth that we’re experiencing. With the current construction boom, the city is clearly becoming a vertical one.

What can other cities learn from Toronto? We live in a city where a majority of people are born in another country. Designers don’t have to work against the idea of exclusion or the uneasiness people might have in each other’s presence.

Is there a defining building for you? Not a single building, but a neighbourhood: Regent Park. Paradoxically, a former public-housing project, which was very troubled, is turning out, by any standards, to be one of the most interesting emerging neighbourhoods in the city.

Comment décrire l’architecture de Toronto ? Elle n’est ni ostentatoire, ni démagogue. Elle s’intègre aux rues et tente de faire passer cette formidable croissance actuelle. Avec ce boom, la ville s’étend verticalement.

The city’s flirtation with new architectural styles may be best seen at the University of Toronto’s Robarts Library. A world-class example of brutalist design, the concrete building is part of one of the largest library systems in North America. And, if you look really closely (and from the right angle), you may be able to see its intended design: a massive grey peacock.

These contemporary designs were only a small taste of what was to come. The early aughts heralded a construction boom that has no end in sight. In 2014 Toronto

This unprecedented pace has meant that entire neighbourhoods seemingly popped up overnight, while sleek modern designs – like the new, illustriously curved L Tower – have become instant classics. This growth is set to continue: The One, a proposed giant on bustling Bloor Street, could soon be Canada’s tallest building.

Although these contemporary designs are earning their spots as Toronto landmarks, Lobko says that, as the city grows, one of the biggest challenges will be keeping Toronto’s architectural history intact. “A great city has to honour and build on its history, and not destroy it in an attempt to entirely reinvent itself every generation,” he explains. Toronto has had some success in this regard: the Trader’s Bank Building still stands as the city’s oldest surviving skyscraper, while the Canadian Bank of Commerce Building remains an icon, albeit a dwarfed one, in the financial district. Nearby, at OCAD University, the Sharp Centre for Design, a pixelated box held aloft by crayon-esque legs, adds a bit of charm to Toronto, thanks to its surreal design.

Toronto’s defining characteristic may very well be its overarching aspiration for diversity. Lobko describes the city as a “living laboratory” where people aren’t afraid to reimagine spaces. He points to the Aga Khan Museum, designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, as a symbol of the city’s attractiveness to architects around the world. “That’s a great example of someone that could work anywhere in the world to honour a culture and has decided to build here,” Lobko explains. “It says a lot about the promise of Toronto.”

Boston was founded nearly 400 years ago by people who fled Europe seeking indepen-dence and trading opportunities, and who were focused enough on the future to quick-ly found a university. Today’s Boston isn’t that different.

It’s still made up of global travel-lers with an educational focus, says Stas Gayshan, managing director of Cambridge Innovation Cen-ter, which operates spaces for business start-ups in Boston, Cambridge, St. Louis, Miami and Rotterdam. And Boston is still driving innovation.

“The strength of our region is we’re small but feisty, wick-ed smart, globally connected, in-venting the future of tomorrow,” Gayshan says. “It’s who we are, and it’s who we’ve always been.”

The Boston area, with a di-verse population of about five mil-lion people, includes Harvard and MIT’s hometown of Cambridge,

That can make it hard for consumers to see what’s coming out of the region, Gayshan says.

The largest locally based tech com-panies, for instance, are EMC Corp. – sold in September to Dell Inc. for $60 billion – a leader in cloud and big data, and Akamai, which speeds up the loading of web pages and has a market capitalization of $9.4 billion. Neither has products the public would likely notice, but, Gayshan notes, “it’s the kind of work you can do in

Boston: super complicated and needs lots and lots of academic R&D.”

Harvard was the first university in America (found-ed 1636) and is now joined in the region by, in addition to MIT, Tufts University, Boston University, Wellesley College, Northeastern University and others – several with a deep expertise in business, public service and engineering. Re-search institutions as well as companies have evolved out of these universities, and some of the highest-ranked teaching and specialty hospi-

Collaboration among all those sectors, McCready says, creates a dynamic environ-ment “where, literally, you can’t be in a social or casual setting – let alone a

work setting – without interacting with some-one who is in some way associated with the innovation econ-omy. That density and kinetic energy feeds upon itself.”

It is also leading to advances in many technology sectors, particularly biotech – where genetics, cancer

IBM Watson Health, an IBM business unit, is developing a health-care infrastructure at its brand new Cambridge headquar-ters; Athenahealth is moderniz-ing the medical record system. And GE intentionally chose Bos-ton as it transforms itself into a “digital industrial” company, focused not only on making machines but on making those machines smart and connected.

Researchers at Harvard, MIT and elsewhere in the region are also busy inventing the fu-ture of robotics, clean energy and nanotechnology. A $350 million nanotechnology re-search facility is rising on MIT’s campus, just down the street from its Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab-oratory, a 12-year-old build-ing designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry, which now accommodates more than 100 principal investigators in-volved in all aspects of computer science research, from machine learning to new computational methods for improving manu-facturing, healthcare, energy and productivity. The Broad In-stitute of Harvard and MIT sits another block away, housing some of the world’s most ad-vanced tools for genetic analysis.

New York is 20 times larger, so, in Bos-ton, companies like GE get to be a “big fish,” says Susan Houston, executive director of MassEcon, a private-sector, non-profit eco-nomic development organization. “The pond is smaller but incredibly high quality, so there’s really no diminution of value to be lo-cated here.”

Most locals cite Boston’s weather as a drawback. But the four seasons and easy access to the East Coast’s best skiing help blunt the cold and make the city more interesting than the rivalling West Coast, McCready says.

Boston’s real estate prices are catching up, but they are still generally below those of New York City and San Francisco, and its commute times are shorter, a 2015 study from the University of Michigan shows. Boston also has the youngest workforce of any major American city, with a median age of 34.

With a diverse, vibrant restaurant scene, a high walk-ability rating and sports teams that regular-ly win national championships, Boston is a fun place to live in and visit, says native son Bob Coughlin, president and CEO of Mass-Bio, a trade association representing 900 life sciences companies.

“We have all the ingredients here,” Coughlin says.

On Lake Ontario, wave seekers enjoy some of the best swell from November to April, paddling out in bone-chilling winds, from an ice-covered shoreline, to surf stormy waves as high as two metres, and there finding their very own form of bliss.
