Welcome to Eastbourne Theatres spring season 2017. It really is a very exciting time for us all as we embark on the first major phase of the Devonshire Park Project with the start of work on the Congress Theatre and the adjacent new Welcome Building. Although we may have one venue closed, we still have a packed programme of entertainment with some really exciting shows coming to the Devonshire Park Theatre and the Winter Garden. Johnathon Larson’s Landmark Musical, Rent opens the season followed by some great drama including a brand new adaptation of Ruth Rendell classic crime thriller A Judgement In Stone, Abigail’s Party starring Amanda Abbington and the hilarious Play That Goes Wrong, direct from the West-End.

We are also thrilled to be presenting three chamber concerts from the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Devonshire Park Theatre, presented by principal players from within the orchestra.

Quality family theatre includes Babe; The Sheep-Pig, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show - recently nominated for a Drama Desk Award on Broadway.

The Winter Garden plays host to a variety of music events from Beyond the Barricade, the Bay City Rollers and Whitney: Queen of the Night to Strictly Come Dancing lead vocalist Lance Ellington.

This is a great season for avid and occasional theatre-goers alike to experience new productions in alternative venues, so we really look forward to welcoming you to Eastbourne Theatres soon!

Very best wishes Chris Jordan Artistic Director Eastbourne Theatres

By Jane Austen Adapted by Tim Luscombe

Catherine Morland loves a good novel and the more ‘horrid’ it is the better. At 17, she is taken by her aunt to Bath where she encounters the social whirl denied her at home. When Catherine accepts an invitation to the Tilney’s country seat at Northanger Abbey, lurid images from her favourite gothic novel Mysteries of Udolpho threaten to overwhelm her. However, all misunderstandings are eventually resolved and, as in all the best Jane Austen novels, the young heroine finally gets her man…

Adapted by acclaimed Austen specialist Tim Luscombe, whose Mansfield Park was also produced and toured by the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.

PINK MIST By Owen SheersDirected by John Retallack and George Mann

Pink Mist tells the story of three young men deployed to Afghanistan. As the physical and psychological aftershocks of war take their toll on the loved ones they left behind, Arthur, Hads and Taff find their journey home is their greatest battle.

Owen Sheers’ Pink Mist was inspired by 30 interviews with returned servicemen and first staged at Bristol Old Vic in 2015. ‘Eye-opening and brilliantly vivid’ (The Times) this ‘beautifully performed’ (Guardian) production matches haunting text with dynamic movement.

Amanda Abbington in The 40th anniversary production of

ABIGAIL’S PARTY By Mike LeighDirected by Sarah Esdaile

It’s forty years since the appalling Beverly first put Donna Summer on the turntable, stacked a plate with little cheesey-pineapple ones, plied her guests with alcohol, cigarettes and Demis Roussos and slow-danced her way across the shag-pile into theatrical history.

The drinks party from hell begins when Beverly and estate agent husband Laurence invite round new neighbours, Tony and Ange, along with nervous divorcee Sue, jittery about the bash her teenage daughter, Abigail, is throwing up the road. As that party reportedly gets out of hand, this one too descends into chaos, and comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. Hilarious and horribly compelling, Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party is an undisputed classic.

Amanda Abbington is best-known for playing Mary Morstan in Sherlock, Miss Mardle in Mr Selfridge and DS Jo Moffat in Cuffs. M

An entertainment by Sheridan Morley with words and music by Noel CowardLucky then that the reviews for MTP’s new production of Noel & Gertie, based on the playwright’s 54-year friendship with Gertrude Lawrence, have met with admiration, acclaim and applause.

The love story, devised by Sheridan Morley from the couple’s letters and diaries, is told with all ‘the Master’s’ flair and wit.

Featuring song and scenes from Privates Lives and Blithe Spirit, this beautifully set and immaculately executed production by Matthew Townshend, takes a perfectly-orchestrated trip down memory lane.

A showcase of the affectionate, complex and tempestuous relationship of two of the best-loved performers of the Twentieth century. Images from MTP's 2014 revival with Julian Forsyth and Helen Power

STRICTLY MURDER

DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATREThursday 6 - Saturday 8 April

DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRETuesday 11 – Saturday 15 April Theatre6 presents

STRICTLY MURDER By Brian Clemens

April 1939. An English couple, Peter and Suzy, are living in Provence in idyllic isolation, far, it seems, from the rumblings of the coming war. Their peace is shattered from within when Suzy discovers she has been betrayed: Peter is not the man he claims to be. Suzy's life is thrown into turmoil as the possibility arises that Peter may in fact be a ruthless killer on the run. Then a Scotland Yard detective arrives and events become even more complicated and frightening ... Lies, subterfuge and murder make this fast-moving thriller a dark and disturbing roller coaster of bluff and double bluff.

A family held captive in Nazi occupied Guernsey. A mysterious stranger with no history. Only one chance of survival.

Starring Paul McGann (Withnail and I, Doctor Who and The Monocled Mutineer) and written by Moira Buffini (Handbagged, wonder.land), this electric drama with edge-of-your-seat suspense is directed by award winning Kate McGregor and produced by Theatre6; producers of the award winning, West End smash hit The Scottsboro Boys.

Adult themes and content. Contains strong language and scenes of a violent nature.

Recommended age 11+

Directed by David GrindleyStarring Roy Hudd and Nichola McAuliffe

Roy Hudd (Huddlines) and Nichola McAuliffe (Surgical Spirit) star in this premiere stage production of the BAFTA Best Comedy Series nominated Waiting For God, which delighted TV audiences across several BBC series in the 1990s. This all-new script is penned by the sitcom's creator Michael Aitkens, and directed by Tony Award winner David Grindley. The cast of nine is led by Hudd and McAuliffe, brilliant performers who have each won best performance accolades in the prestigious Olivier Awards.

All the favourite characters from the original series are reimagined for 2017, facing the challenges that come with growing old disgracefully in the era of the silver surfer. At Bayview Retirement Home, battle-axe extraordinaire Diana Trent conspires with new resident Tom Ballard to give the conniving manager his comeuppance through a hilarious conspiracy with unexpectedly heart-warming results.

OUR MAN IN HAVANA By Graham Greene Adapted by Clive Francis

Cuba 1958. Meet Jim Wormold – a hapless vacuum cleaner salesman who gets sucked in to a dirty world of espionage and double agents when the chance of helping out MI6 with a job or two proves too good an offer to resist. And, quite frankly, he could do with the cash to pay for his teenage daughter’s ever increasing lifestyle.

From the company who brought us Travels With My Aunt and thrillingly adapted for the stage by Clive Francis, this uproarious farce is filleted to perfection from Graham Greene’s hilarious, subversive and ever popular novel.

'You should dream more, Mr. Wormold. Reality in our century is not something to be faced.' Graham Greene, Our Man in Havana
