Following Rudy Ricciotti, Patrick Bouchain, Lacaton & Vassal, Luca Merlini, Lefèvre & Aubert, TYIN & Anna Heringer, and Iwan Baan last year, we wished this year to slip ourselves behind the attractive and surprising pictures of the “architect houses” we are regularly surrounded with.

Choosing 9 buildings in Europe, we wish you to discover 9 architects and 9 personal universes being at these projects origin.

Each of us can re-find himself in their worlds exhibitions: they take part of the constructible removal of our own geographies.

Discovering an architect universe these realizations come within the frame of is the opportunity to discover their generator process.

To put the creative process on show, know the architect interrogations, share their thoughts mechanisms, discover their references, approach their work tools, distinguish their numerous parts: then each visitor can perceive and share the necessary and permanent researches of any project.

Questioning invention is questioning the architect position and numerous parts, but sizing up our request of creating together living spaces as well.

Choosing 9 different places is casting a mirror glance on our daily architectural environment, partly made of dwellings series.

Out of her history, the Villa Noailles fully takes part in this exhibition.

Jean-Pierre Blanc, director and Florence Sarano, associated curator

9 ARCHITECTS / 9 UNIVERSES

Behind each of those suggestions, there is a singular universe: each architect’s one. With his questionings, proposals, memories, references, formation, researches and positions, his “inhabiting the world” visions, he builds his own culture, still waiting for new meetings. And the meeting comes with the «client» and his project to live on that planet. Then starts a weaving story.Let’s not forget the third “partner”: a place, which already exists, with its qualities and constraints. The architect will decode them with the reading keys he made up in his own universe. Then the work begins, the project is elaborated from all these crossing elements getting involved for an eventually unique production. May be, in the end, this project will generate new ways of life…who knows?

Each of these 9 projects is a way of entering these universes: the hidden world that nevertheless brings to the project. The exhibition suggests discovering these works inscription in the authors personal geographies.

What are the place and the role of the architect universe in this realization? Is the scale of the house an ideas laboratory for other projects? These 9 realizations also result of a complex and elaborated process.

What are the used tools? Why? How does the designer play with them?

What are the various steps of the project?

In the end, how does each architect’s universe feed on the project itself?

All these points we wished to share with the visitors of the Villa Noailles, in continuity with the previous exhibitions work.

The exhibition thus proposes, in each room situated on the sports level, various admissions in the designer concept, with multiple tools (plans, photos, objects, texts and 9 movies).

These 9 realizations put together are as many propositions as directions. Their juxtaposition opens as many constructions as possible. Visitors themselves weave the links between them. Behind disparities and likeness, behind the possibly sometimes identical questionings and the different answers, these 9 propositions reveal what the architects show during the exhibition time: parts of their hidden worlds.

FLORENCE SARANO

Architect, invited curator for architectural exhibitions

Her office is based in Toulon and has been teaching since 2005 at the Ecole d’Architecture de Marseille. Her architecture diploma project was on the ‘Ma’ concept in Japanese architecture, and on graduating she went to work in Japan with Shin Takamatsu (opera houses in Kobe and Tokyo). After travelling extensively in Asia, she returned to Europe, where she worked in Paris and England. In 1991 she was awarded the Bourse Lavoisier from the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères for the advanced master’s programme at the Columbia University School of Architecture, New York. She stayed there to work with the artist Allan Wexler (project in Central Park). After three years she returned to France, where she was a Europan winner in 2000 (‘designing the overseas city – Martinique’). She also studied at the Sorbonne, where she was awarded a DEA in art history for her ‘Jean Prouvé équilibre et mobilité’, she taught for five years at the Ecole d’Architecture deParis Malaquais. She has contributed to a variety of publications and periodicals. In 2008 a series of architecture films made for each exhibition was released. Following the release of the first of these, Jean Prouvé, in 2000, she became guest curator for architectural exhibitions at the Villa Noailles.

THE EXHIBITION / BEHINDIMAGES

The free route through the exhibition allows every visitor to weave himself the links between these attractive images of architecture and the universe of each architect. All the shapes the project can have taken before existing in its built reality (models, texts, plans) are a divided up present, offered like as many answers to questions about propositions to live.

1- ENTRANCE AREA /THE INHABITANTS

This spot, the first the visitors discover when coming in the exhibition, will present the inhabitants under three aspects:

A portrait: who are these future inhabitants? (family’s names are not shown)

The initial program: the starting point, where desires and constraints also are wrote down.

An interview: some inhabitants agreed to testify concerning their project progress, and even to their own lives.

2- SQUASH ROOM / FROM THE DRAWING TO THE OBJECT

The buildings photographs will echo with the first drawings, the sketches, the sketchbooks. That creates interaction, so that the visitor can take the measure of the distance between the first moments and the final realization. The final realization perceived as an image when arriving in the exhibition space will take a second sense after the reading of these drawings.

3- SWIMMING POOL ROOM / (9) UNIVERSES

Each of the architects exposes his universe through an objects series, somehow like in a curiosity shop. Daily objects, references, photos, movie, tools, works of art, various collections but also personal pad of sketch, pad of notations… and a photo of his drawing office. So many elements, imagination triggers, and the architect companions he will share, here, with the visitors. They are together introductions, but also composing elements of this hidden part of the work.

4- GALLERY / (9) PROCESSES

The studies models are materialized thought time: investigations… inventoried, estimated, selected and developed propositions. The project thought builds itself in these «round trips» as in the bends too. The series are for the architects so many necessary stages to its growth project development, to its future (often already there from the beginning). Plans associated to models allow to take the measure of all the stages and the knowledge which each of them implies: to discover the plans it is to look differently at every « image of house ». Rarely shown these plans and these models open the access to the necessary work, according to each architect, for what seems to be only a small project.

5- GYMNASIUM / FREE TIME

The same and very specific camera goes from hands to hands to every team that keeps it during a week to freely film the project or the architect universe …This 10 MN 9 movies series shows into the form of auto portrait …

VILLA BOHERMORE / GRAIGUENAMANAGH

This small rural dwelling, 100m2, is located in the corner of a field on the edge of the village of Graiguenamanagh, on a south-facing hill overlooking mount Brandon. Two boundary walls one retaining the other freestanding form a forecourt off the public road and anchor the building to the site. Set within a square footprint of 15 x 15m, five single storey volumes, increasing internally in width from 1 to 5m and in height from 2.1 to 2.7m, step with the landscape descending down the hillside. The volumes are drawn apart to create a series of open-ended external courtyards between the rooms of the house, potentially doubling the perceived area of accommodation. The dwelling remains closed to the road, where a recessed entrance, formed out of

the first volume, makes a covered threshold. A doorway set between two parallel walls leads into the enfilade of rooms that in turn open to the courtyards and meadow below.

A simple, economic and unembellished palette of materials is employed to reinforce the concept of the house. Walls are rendered externally and in part internally, a polished concrete floor is used throughout extending in part into the courtyards. Timber sliding timber screens form the intermittent glazed walls to the open side of the volumes. The roof is covered with a sedum blanket to replace the building footprint. A gravel forecourt and pathway extend around the house with a series of stepped gardens set out along the eastern edge mirroring

This is the first project of a young Egyptian architect.Owners are an art collector whose wife is an artist. The field is located in a small Flemish town next to the eastern border of the Belgium. The situation of the parcel, laterally limited by two other dwellings, is submitted to compliance with a shape corresponding to one of the many traditional 17th and 18th century houses in the district. Moreover, its narrow dimensions (5.30 meters) for a depth of more than three times its width are both significant constraints, and opportunities for the project.Occupying the entire width of the parcel, the ground floor volume opens to the garden at the back and the two upper levels, with fully glazed facade, are

overhanging on the street. This relationship with public space behind this great showcase develops with the set of the internal walls, looking like white facets creating private balconies situations in each of the two levels. The zenithal light from openings in the roof modulates, according to the hours of the day, the perception of the irregular folds of the volumes. At night, it’s the artificial light that gives the reading of the surfaces slope, against which the “floating above the street” people figures shadows stand out, each of them on his balcony.Several emotions go through the design of the building, a balcony in Venice, the cemetery of Scarpa, Barragan architecture and «The life of a man, a woman and their passions.» Only this raw material could count, for a

wall resting on as a will, for a house being our ultimate shelter. Not only to live in: to reside. »

« As for my sources of inspiration, they are in all that surrounds me, like the image of the description of the cat by Gilles Deleuze: never quiet always ears with the aguets, even at rest. A creator approaches this animal condition: he is never impassive, he is looking at, he is listening constantly. I like to be impregnated by all that surrounds us.»

HOLIDAY HOUSE / VALS (SWITZERLAND)

THEPROJECT

SURFACE / 285 M2

YEAR / 2005-2009

Surprised that it was allowed to build close to the famous Therme Vals (Peter Zumthor) within the view line towards the old village, the question that immediately rose was “how”. The intension was an un-obstructive development of a structure and to avoid “prototypical Swiss-ness” a house on a steep inclination made it possible to have a fully embedded villa in the landscape and yet bring in sufficient daylight. Access is provided via an existing wooden barn, located on a lower level of the mountain. An underground tunnel, leads to the house. The view from the villa is slightly inclined as well towards the other side of the narrow valley of Vals and its dramatic scenery. This whole idea of a holiday villa relates to having a special experience — something removed from

the daily way of living. The scheme was not perceived by the planner as a typical structure but rather an example of pragmatic unobtrusive development in a sensitive location. We wanted to make it a ‘amalgamation’ (almost literally) of architecture & landscaping, and an experiment of sustainable building through making it extremely energy efficient and use only non fossil fuels, a water well and organic finishing. Also we were interested (as Dutch and Swiss architects duo) in showing an alternative for the somewhat dogmatic process of making architecture in Switzerland. The architecture in the Netherlands is more an ‘out of the box’ thinking /conceptual process, it has a different, in a certain aspect positive, more flexible approach, not necessarily better or worse

than the ‘Swiss way’. The completely contemporary Dutch interior ads on to this. The house, was built and furnished in cooperation with a large number of Dutch designers and companies (Hella Jongerius, Demakersvan, Scholten & Baijings, Marcel Wanders, Claudy Jongstra, Royal Tichelaar Makkum and Vitra Nederland). The spacious interior is an eclectic, but balanced mix of contemporary Dutch Design. It is a unique combination of architecture, interior and styling, with a selection of not ‘standard’ Dutch design, but of special pieces that create a comfortable atmosphere.

The building is located in a landscape of unique beauty, the result of a natural and evident growth. The mountain, topped by a castle, is covered by a blanket housing through a system of aggregation by simple juxtaposition of pieces generated fragmented target tissue that adapts to the topography.

The project proposes to integrate into the environment, respecting their strategies of adaptation to the environment and materials away from the mimesis that would lead to misleading historicism, and showing the time constructively to meet the requirements of the «new people». In this way the house is conceived as a piece placed on the ground, joining in the gap. A piece built on the same white lime, the same

primacy of the massif on the opening, which takes the edge of the site to have their holes and integrated into the fragmentation of the environment.

The indoor space is divided by the void that is the core of communication cut parallel disposition of the mountain without touching it. On the ground floor are the garage and cellar, on a volume it has two floors with four rooms. Two of them, the rooms at the intermediate level are open to the private street, the other two on the upper level overlook above the houses opposite, the Valley of Ayora. One of them, the study is opened in turn to the central double height, incorporating it into their space. Across the gap, and on the mountain, are the

areas facing the garden day illuminated by light reflected on the south slope of the castle oxidized.

The house is located on an island just by the sea fairway to the port of Gothenburg .

The project is a transformation of a warn down cottage from the 50’s with an extension from the mid 70’s.

The building volume and most of the structure has been kept intact, in order not to exploit the landscape but just to refine andstrengthen the qualities already existing on the site.

The new facade is cladded in plywood, coated in black pine tar just like the traditional way of preserving wooden boats.

The roof is coated in simple tar paper and has thin plywood eaves with integrated aluminumgutters, coated in black.

The interior is all in natural pine and where plywood is used for both cladding andconstruction.

«In our projects, we are searching for the tension that may exist between the site, the functional program, built form and its materiality. We would like this perception of things to be as emotional as rational. The site beauty is as much related to its natural landscape features as to the presence of dry stone walls, allowing the vineyards farming in this mountainous area. The Lavaux hillside became an Unesco worldwide heritage because of this landscape structure, in which man worked as much as nature did.In nature, the perception we have of the things is intimately linked to their form and their materiality. In architecture, we can make the same observation: the shape-materiality dichotomy is inseparable from the

way we perceive objects. Materiality has a powerful emotional load, it forms things character.Inside, rooms follow the topography to be a better integral part of it, but also to differ one from the others. Their nature is strongly impregnated by the concrete omnipresence. The feeling of essentiality is present there; it projects us into the harsh daily lives of the Valais inhabitants in the past. Only the great generosity of the glass opening moves us away from ancestral conditions which still seem to inhabit these places. The modern condition experiences allow poverty to give room to the pure pleasure of contemplating the landscape. »

The stereotype of the «tool shed», made with old sheets and used material as a collage of different volumes at different times, is revised and distorted in a continuous process of intensification and citation.

The symmetry of the gable is broken along the ridge line to leave space for a long blade of light that provides excellent visual quality to the owner. A wooden box is added as «superstructure» to the master volume that allows a visual connection with the lodging nearby.

The continuous zinc coating envelops the entire volume, integrating the drain and the ventilated cavity without interruption. The lighting system inside the building underlines the two different inclinations of the ceiling and emphasizes the continuity of the covering.

« Our role is difficult to define. In a pessimistic definition of what an architect does in Italy, we could say that there is no need for us. We are a nation “senza architettura”. In a more optimistic way we would like to make our clients discover what they have never seen of what they are too blind to see. We will be with them in every single step of this discovery, enjoying the final result together.»

The site is on the outskirts of Leiria, in a high position overlooking the city. The functions are banal: a house divided in private area with bedrooms, and social area with living-rooms.

The private areas are at street level under the plot, around a central courtyard with rooms opening to private patios in a intimate environment.

The living rooms are around a void, that collects light from above and gazes the castle at the city centre.

The house is a recognizable archetype emptied of its centre by the light designed by a three heighted courtyard that opens horizontally at the garden level.

The bedroom courtyards, revealed in the garden,

relate with this archetypal object providing different readings on its scale.

Scale and volume are controlled in a chaotic context, with a clear identity that from its core relates with the historical legacy far away: the Leiria Castle.

« Our life has an influence but most important it is our capacity to use it to conceive. As the literature transforms the banality of the language, the architect works with what all know: a door, a roof, but finaly it is its competence of poetic transformation which is paramount.»

THE PROJECT

SURFACE / 400 M2

YEAR / 2005-2009

This villa in Provence is located on a pine-wood slope, facing the distant sea.

It takes the shape of a long rectangle, recessed into the slope; its only exposed wall is forty meters long and is entirely glazed. Just in front, and running parallel to this wall, is a long expanse of water that is partially sheltered by the roof, which extend above and rest upon a series of posts which reach down to the pool. The long, glazed façade displays a continuous undulating movement.

Referring to the initial project constraints, the architect explains: «The site and only the site. Recession and disappearance were the rules of the process. The client remained in the background, showing an utmost reserve and

discretion. It should be noted that they are not French!

(…) Understanding the site. Listening to it and letting it communicate. Then, during its technical development, increasing the project’s field of communication. Reinventing a landscape which does not exist, framing a view through a long horizontal plane. Erasing the mountain in order to picture the cobalt blue sea.»
