PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Friends,

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida experienced great things during 2014. Our 70th anniversary year saw contributors give much needed funds despite economic strain, our operations expand to 30 Clubs after the grand opening of our new Cocoa Branch and our Club members achieve successes on a national level.

Events such as our Celebrate The Children Dinner & Auction and Faces of the Future Fundraising Breakfasts served not only as essential fundraising opportunities, but as platforms for the youth we serve. Maryah Sullivan, a 12-year Club member from our Joe R. Lee Branch, delivered the keynote presentation at Celebrate The Children in May and was named the 2014-2015 National Youth of the Year in September. She was selected from over 4 million young people served annually by Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. At her home Club’s Faces of the Future Breakfast a few months later, Maryah spoke about the honor of being the first Club member in our organization’s history to receive this extraordinary distinction.

In the years to come, we will continue to advocate for Central Florida’s children because there is still much work to be done. We will strive to engage local leaders and partners so that more and more young people can have access to the safe environment of a Boys & Girls Club and the caring adult role models who guide them. In order to reach those goals, we need the community to focus on elevating the next generation’s opportunities for success and it starts now. Those opportunities greatly increase when children go to their Boys & Girls Club after school instead of an empty home. We know that with your support and advocacy, we can make children Central Florida’s highest priority.

Thank you to the thousands of people who made it possible for youth like Maryah to call our Clubs home in 2014 and who will continue to support BGCCF in the future. She is proof positive that our youth development programs have brought powerful change to young lives for the past seven decades and can for years to come.

With gratitude,

Gary W. CainPresident & CEO

During fiscal year 2013-2014, with funding support from the Florida Department of Education, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida was able to create 21st Century Community Learning Centers at its East Altamonte, Joe R. Lee, Tupperware Brands, Universal Orlando Foundation, and West Sanford Branches and its Walt Disney World Clubhouse, serving approximately 750 members. Young people at

these Clubs received one hour each of homework assistance and academic enrichment daily, supervised by Florida state-certified teachers. Personal enrichment was provided by Club staff.

Since 1944, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida has shaped the lives of many thousands of young people across our region and created positive change in our local community. Over these 70 years, our commitment to make all children our highest priority has never wavered. Last year alone, we served

more than 13,000 children in vulnerable life circumstances who found solace, support and caring adult role models at one of our 30 Boys & Girls Clubs in Brevard, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties—their home away from home.

• 100% of Club members who were 2013-2014 high school seniors graduated with plans for college, vocational school or the military.

• 97% of all members say Club programming helps them develop goals for the future.

• 90% of teens plan to complete a post-high school education (career technical program, community college, four-year university).

• 77% feel safer at their Club compared to other places.

COCOA BRANCH OPENING

The Cocoa Branch would not have been possible without the generous support of Disney Cruise Line, the Eckerd Family Foundation, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Harris Corporation, Publix Super Markets Charities, the Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation, the Covell family, the Simpkins family and the Allender family.

Thank you to the City of Cocoa, United Way of Brevard, Capital Campaign Chair Mike Arnold and the Brevard County Board of Directors. We would also like to extend our appreciation to The Rotary Club of Cocoa, which generously donated the building, and Disney Cruise Line and KaBOOM! for making the Cocoa playground a dream play area for local children.

On Jan. 15, 2014, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida proudly unveiled our brand new Cocoa Branch, allowing us to serve even more children in Brevard County. This new Club, our third in Brevard County, gives disadvantaged children from the local community access to a safe and interactive place to learn, grow and succeed.

The two-story, 10,000-square-foot Club features a youth game room, teen center, sound studio, tech lab and much more. Outside the Club stands a colorful playground where Club members enjoy a climbing wall, ripple bridge, swing sets and a triple-shoot-out basketball area. More than 100 children and teens have already taken advantage of this much-needed location.
