MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY IS D-III

Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants devel-op fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation at many of the 444 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics to promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU’s overall 3.17 GPA among student-athletes and 182 MAC All-Academic honorees in 2013-14While Division III athletics programs promote participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the D-III level.Misericordia is one of just two schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference to offer all 23 sports sponsored by the MAC.MU has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 43 conference championships and sent 22 teams to the NCAA Championships, including the women’s soccer team advancing to the NCAA Final Four in 2012.In addition, several individuals have put Misericordia on the national map: Ashlee Ward, Track & Field: NCAA Indoor & Outdoor high jump champion. Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second-leading scorer in Division III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: NCAA All-American. Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: First-team All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led Division III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American. Frank Redmond, track & field: All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Eighth in Division III career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III single-game hits record.Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educa-tional Catholic institution located in northeastern Pennsylvania.Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.MU offers 34 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Scienc-es; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.Dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality, these values are found throughout the Uni-versity, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With a total enrollment of 3,111 students, including 1,982 full-time, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. An average class size of 19 ensures personalized attention and a 12.6:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another.Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban at-mosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

ATHLETICS FACILITIESThe athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-ath-letes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts.

Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams.

The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio.

The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses.

Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was con-structed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs.

The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal.

The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since 1992.

Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University.

Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.

The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation.

Honoring the Robert Tambur family, Tambur Field was chris-tened in 2013 as the new home for the MU baseball team.

McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, opened in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.

In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was construct-ed in 2012 and provides meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams.

The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community.

The Freedom Conference/MAC sponsors competition in 23 sports. Misericordia and Albright are the only MAC schools to offer all 23 sponsored sports.

MATT VANDERMEIDHead Coach

Matt VanDerMeid is in his third season as head men’s and women’s swimming coach at Misericordia University.

He led both teams to winning records in 2013-14 and has an overall two-year record of 23-23.

In addition, both teams finished second at the 2013-14 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.

A graduate of SUNY-Geneseo, VanDerMeid spent three seasons as an assistant at his alma mater and helped the men’s and women’s teams to three consecutive SUNYAC titles.

He coached 10 All-Americans and the team broke 25 school records over the last three years.

As a student-athlete at Geneseo, VanDerMeid was a three-time NCAA qualifier and a 10-time All-American.

He was the SUNYAC Championships MVP and is a member of the SUNY-Geneseo Athletics Hall of Fame.

SHELbY WITHAMGraduate Assistant Coach

Shelby Witham is in her first season as a graduate assistant coach with the Misericordia University swim teams.

A native of Tabernacle, NJ, Witham graduated from Towson University with a degree in

exercise science.

She was a leading member and point scorer for the Towson Tigers in both the dual meet season and at the CAA conference championship meets all four years of her career.

Specializing in distance events, she earned national level cuts for the US Open and AT&T Winter Nationals. Witham is pursuing her master’s in Organizational Management with a concentration in Healthcare Management.

DAVE MARTINAthletic Director

Dave Martin is in his 11th year as director of athletics at Misericordia University.

During his first 10 years at the helm, the Cougars won 21 conference championships and earned 20 NCAA tournament berths.

The women’s soccer team made the school’s first trip to the NCAA final Four in 2012 and Ashlee Ward won NCAA Indoor and Outdoor High Jump titles in 2014.

As interim head women’s basketball coach, Martin led the Cougars to their first Freedom title and NCAA bid in 2011-12.

In addition, he guided the Cougars through the transition from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference to the Freedom Conference and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) in 2008.

Most recently, he oversaw the addition of varsity football which began play in 2012 and has also overseen the addition of men’s tennis and women’s golf as a varsity sports offering at MU.

Martin previously spent 14 seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Misericordia and served as associate athletic director and coordinator of athletic recruiting.

He led the Cougars to 11 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoff berths and two PAC finals appearances. Martin compiled 178 career wins at MU and was a four-time PAC Coach of the Year.

A graduate of Wilkes University, Martin earned a master’s degree in education from Misericordia.

The Misericordia University men’s and women’s swim teams have enjoyed tremendous success during their seven seasons in the Middle Atlantic Conference.

The women’s team has won a MAC title and finished second four times and has never finished worse than third at the MAC Championships.

After finishing fourth in their first season in the MAC, the men’s squad had three straight third-place finishes and currently has a streak of three consecutive runners-up finishes.

With plenty of talent and experience returning from two MAC run-ner-up teams a year ago, both squads have their sights set on reaching the top step of the podium in 2014-2015.

The women’s team returns nine letter winners, including three seniors and five juniors. “Our upperclassmen are extremely motivated,” said third-year head coach Matt VanDerMeid. “They have high expecta-tions and are setting a good example for the newcomers.”

Davis will once again compete in the backstroke and IM after seeing impressive drops in the backstroke a year ago.

A team co-captain, Hallam will compete in the mid-distance freestyle events while fellow co-captain Zimmerman will compete in the sprint events. “Dana and Aryn are good captains and good leaders as is Leah,” said VanDerMeid. “They have enjoyed success throughout their careers and are motivated to improve and finish their careers on a high note.”

A talented junior class includes two-time team MVP Dani Blass, Kerri Ciriello, Jacque-line Cormier, Taylor Grenier and Allison McCallister.

Blass was the MAC champion in the 200 breaststroke and finished second in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

Ciriello is excited to make the transition from the mile to the IM and butterfly while Cormier was a two-time MAC qualifier in the butterfly.

Grenier returns in the butterfly and backstroke and McCallister swims the breaststroke and backstroke.

“Dani Blass is one of the top swimmers in the MAC,” said VanDer-Meid. “She and her classmates are very determined and will play a key role in our success this year.”Kelly Strahosky returns in the distance freestyle events after her first-year season was cut short by injury. “Kelly is gifted and has a lot of energy,” said VanDerMeid.

Sophomore Morgan Hanadel is in her first season with the team and adds speed to the sprints. Other members of an impressive first-year class include Miranda Amey, Lauren Baumeister, Rachel Finnegan, Marissa Gombosi, Maria Timuscuk and Emma Weber.

Amey will likely swim the mile while Baumeister and Finnegan will compete in the backstroke and freestyle.

Weber is expected to compete in the breaststroke and IM while Ti-muscuk’s versatility could see her in multiple events.Gombosi competes in the backstroke and IM.

“We are pleased with our class of first-year swimmers,” said VanDer-Meid. “They are talented and coachable and we have high expecta-tions for them.”

On the men’s side, the Cougars return nine lettermen on the 14-man roster, including five seniors: Nick Essington, Pete Kolokithias, Tom Machi, Chris Panagacos and Brad Thomas.

Kolokithias, a two-year co-captain, will swim the IM and freestyle while fellow co-captain Thomas will swim the freestyle and butterfly.

“Pete and Brad are both great captains who lead by example,” said VanDerMeid. “They have been part of three consecutive MAC runner-up teams and are extremely motivated to end their careers on a high note.”

Machi will compete in the IM and butterfly while Essington will make the switch to mid-distance.

Panagacos will swim the freestyle and butterfly upon completion of the soccer season. “Machi and Essington are tough competitors and proven scorers for us,” said VanDerMeid. “Panagacos will be a wel-come addition. He trains harder than anyone I’ve ever seen.”

Matt Cullen and Pat O’Dell are the only juniors on the team while Robbie Jacobs and Tom Scott are the only returning sopho-mores.

“Cullen has high expectations for himself in the sprint freestyle events,” said VanDerMeid. “O’Dell is in great shape after having a breakout sophomore season in the IM and backstroke.

Jacobs will again com-pete in the distance freestyle while Scott,

the team MVP, is coming off a pair of MAC championships.

“Jacobs is working hard to reach the lofty goals that he has set for himself and Scott has aspirations of getting to the next level.”

Transfer Matt Scanlon will swim the breaststroke and joins four other first-year swimmers: John Brady, Joe Grzech, Nick Lucca and Erik Machi.

Brady will swim the breaststroke and IM while Lucca will compete in the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle.

Machi joins his brother, Tom, on the roster, while Grzech is third member of his family to swim for Misericordia.

“Our newcomers are talented and will be expected to contribute right away,” said VanDerMeid. “They have shown a great deal of energy and intensity in the early going. I’m looking forward to watching them develop throughout the season.”

While neither team has the largest roster in the conference, VanDer-Meid expects both squads to be near the top of the standings at the MAC championships.

“We have several individuals who can score in multiple events and we hope to take advantage of that versatility to get to the top of the standings,” said VanDerMeid.
