I had a complaint after the last issue of the magazine that the front page comment was miserable, because I had written about families who were on the bread-line and really struggling. The complainant wanted an uplifting article to counter the rain.

So as I try to keep my readers happy, I thought that I would draw attention to something that makes me smile every time I go to Cullompton. Brian Anderson has created a very attractive garden at the top of Cullompton Hill, complete with a topiary that I call ‘Bradninch Bob’. I understand that Bob may have some siblings in the near future, depending on how fast the hedges grow. Brian is hoping eventually to have a group called the ‘Heads of ‘Ninch’, we could end up as famous as the Easter Islands.

This is a brilliant example of guerrilla gardening at its best. Fortunately John Berry stepped in when miser-able Mid Devon Council wanted to rip the garden

MY SWEET PATOOTIEMY SWEET PATOOTIEMY SWEET PATOOTIEMY SWEET PATOOTIE

Bradninch Acoustic Music Club is delighted to be one of the hosts for this amazing Canadian band on their 6

th UK tour. This is a fantastic unique opportuni-

ty to hear this multi-award winning band on Wednesday, September 14th at the Baptist Church. Price £5 on the door, performance starts at 8pm.

My Sweet Patootie is contemporary roots and ragtime at its best; bringing tight harmonies, mon-strous guitar, sizzling fiddle and percussion together in one perfect package. Founded in 2007 by Canadi-an Folk Music Award winners Sandra Swannell and Terry Young, the trio has a growing international rep-utation.

From original swing to funky fiddle-tune arrange-ments and exquisite ballads, they deliver a must-see show that Driftwood Magazine describes as “two parts exemplary musicianship, one part vaudeville comedy”.

Their vintage-style song writing is rooted in folk, americana and jazz; heavily influenced by the likes of Chet Atkins, Lenny Breau, Les Paul & Mary Ford and the Andrews Sisters. Throw in a penchant for light-hearted satire and their love of artists like Patsy Cline and Hank Williams and you get a sound that Young likes to call "Green Acres for the New Millen-nium".

Terry Young is described by Penguin Eggs as an “acoustic guitar god”. BBC critic James Harrox calls his playing "virtuosic", while FATEA magazine de-scribes it as "jaw dropping". He is a talented multi-instrumentalist who toured from 1999 - 2009 with the group Tanglefoot; performing on guitar, mandolin, banjo and pennywhistle.

Sandra Swannell is a classically trained violinist/ viol-ist, but her style owes much more to the influences of Joe Venuti and Stephane Grappelli. Her diverse musical background ranges from recording with Can-ada's legendary Stompin' Tom Connors to writing a series of musical sketches for string orchestra. She was the principal violist of the Georgian Bay Sym-phony and fronted the Celtic art-rock band The Shards before joining the group Tanglefoot in 2005.

Their drummer is very sadly unable to join us on our 2016 UK Tour. In his stead they are very pleased to

announce that John Jackson, the world’s tallest Pa-tootie will be joining them from Devon. Intrigued??? You should be and you’ll have to come out to a show to find out what that’s all about!

The band's name "My Sweet Patootie" is a slang term of endearment which became popular in the 1920s meaning a "hot dame" or a "sassy sweet-heart". Several ragtime titles from the jazz-age refer-ence the expression, as do the lyrics of "Everybody Loves My Baby" (1924) by Spencer Williams and Jack Palmer. More significantly for Young and Swan-nell is "Sweet Patootie Blues" (1928) by Arthur "Blind" Blake, who was well known for his complex and intricate finger picking. The name was chosen to capture the vintage flavour of their music as well as the satirical edge in much of their song writing.

The trio has performed thousands of shows including theatres, festivals and clubs in Canada (Ontario, Manitoba and British Colombia), the United States from the eastern Seaboard to the Midwest, and the United Kingdom. My Sweet Patootie is played regu-larly on CBC, NPR, and BBC Radio. They have per-formed live-to-air concerts on; the nationally-

syndicated WFMT "Folkstage" in Chicago, IL; WVBR’s "Bound for Glory" in Ithaca, NY; and BBC’s “The Drift” in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The Hele Society

After a somewhat quiet Spring, the Society held its last bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday 7th June and confirmed various activities planned for the Summer including:

A working party at Hele Centre to improve the ac-cess path.

A further working party to replant the containers on the bridge

Running a stall at the Broadclyst Fun Day to raise funds and to promote the old Station Building project.

The building lies within Broadclyst parish and the Broadclyst Parish Council have kindly offered a grant of £500 towards the project and gave a free pitch at the Fun Day - for both of which we are most grateful.

If you would like to join the society please contact Dawn Abrahams on 01392 881457 for details.

Bradninch Festival Choir – On Tour!

On Saturday 1st October, Bradninch Festival Choir will give their first concert outside Bradninch, having been invited to perform in St Mary’s Church, Silver-ton. The choir is preparing a varied and uplifting pro-gramme, including some stunning solo items per-formed by members of the choir. Whilst the concert is eagerly anticipated in Silverton, our Bradninch supporters are also encouraged not to miss this op-portunity to hear the choir perform in this lovely venue. The concert begins at 7.30pm and refresh-ments will be served in the interval. Entry is free but donations will be welcomed.

Christmas is Coming – Come and Sing!

Bradninch Festival Choir is an inclusive, unaudi-tioned choir of around eighty singers from Bradninch and beyond, aged nine to ninety! Di-rected by Marion Brown, the choir has been singing together since 2011 and has steadily grown in numbers – and reputation!

The choir will begin rehearsing for Christmas on Monday 3

rd October and then meet weekly on Mon-

day evenings from 7.30-9.30pm in the Baptist Church. This is open to everyone of any age from age nine (Year 5) upwards (no upper limit!) who would like to come and sing Christmas music. No singing experience – or talent! – is required! There are no auditions and you don’t need to be able to read music as all the music will be taught. We will learn a varied programme of traditional, classical, modern and popular carols & Christmas songs, cul-minating in a performance in St Disen’s Church on Saturday 17th December in A Celebration of Christ-mas.

The cost of participation will be £30 per singer (can be paid in two or three instalments) which includes all music and a practice CD. To book your place and order your music, please contact Marion Brown by email [email protected] or phone 881454.

Back in Bradninch after the her hugely popular con-cert last year, flutist Candice Hamel will be joined by the renowned pianist Mariko Asakawa-North for an evening of beautiful music. Those lucky enough to have heard Candice’s concert with the harpist Ruby Aspinall will look forward to the joyful inventiveness that she brings to music from the baroque to the modern, from J C Bach to Lili Boulanger.

Scottish-Japanese pianist Mariko Asakawa-North received her first pi-ano at the age of sevenas a surprise gift from her beloved Japanese grandfather. From thirteen she was a violin and piano scholar at North East

of Scotland Music School and in 2001 won first prize in the Moray International Piano Competition, and began her studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, then at the Royal College of Mu-sic and at the Dartington International Summer School.

Her recent concerts include performances at LSO St Luke’s, Bluthners Piano Centre, The Edinburgh Fes-tival (with Opera Bohemia) and Barbican Hall (as part of the BBC Total Immersion Series, recorded for BBC Radio 3). She is now based in Exeter where she has a busy chamber music performance sched-ule and is a Visiting Music Teacher at Blundell's School.

Mariko has a keen interest in contemporary music, and studied with world-renowned contemporary pia-nist and composer, Rolf Hind, at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has played in master-classes with such distinguished artists as Dominique Merlet, Stephen Kovacevic, Martino Tirimo, Boris Berman, Malcolm Martineau, and Peter Hill.

Candice studied flute at Trinity College of Music and The Royal Conservatoire, Holland and has played with the Phil-harmonia, London Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonia, RTE Concert Orches-tra and RTE Symphony Orchestra. She has toured to Moscow, America and Japan. And of course, Bradninch! As

well as regular playing commitments, Candice main-tains an active teaching programme for students of all ages and abilities from beginner to Diploma and beyond, and offers personal courses as well as mas-terclasses.

Candice and Mariko will present an exciting pro-gramme, to show us how expressive, how lyrical and how powerful these instruments are. As usual we will be offering a glass of wine or soft drink in the interval, and look forward to many friends joining us to welcome them at 7pm on 29

th September in St

Disen’s.

Tickets are £10.00 (no concessions but under 15’s free) at the door, from SPAR in Bradninch, or by phoning 01392 881 525.

Self Build Housing Scheme

The Government wants to enable more people to build their own home and Mid Devon Council recog-nises the potential benefits of self-build in meeting the housing needs of Mid Devon residents. It can represent a more affordable housing option for local people, support the construction industry and give people more choice in the housing market.

If you would like to build you own home, the first step is to fill in and return a ‘Self Build Interest Application Form’ obtainable from the Mid Devon Council web-site at www.middevon.gov.uk/residents/planning-

policy/self-build/ to register your interest. Return the form via email at [email protected], or by post to Forward Planning, Mid Devon District Coun-cil, Phoenix Lane, Tiverton EX16 6PP.

The council is setting up a register of land available for self build projects and the aim is to match appli-cants to plots as they become available. There will be several options available from the ability to pur-chase an individual plot, form a group to build sever-al homes or purchase a shell, already constructed and fit it out to an individual specification. There is more information on the website.

Mid Devon Council bids for a Garden Village Development in Cullompton.

Garden Village status will assist in the delivery of the town centre relief road and J28 improvements badly needed in the area. The bid seeks a package of fi-nancial assistance and also seeks additional support for funding a feasibility study into a new railway sta-tion for Cullompton.

If successful, the Government indicates that access could be granted to wider road and rail capital fund-ing programmes.

A Fruit and Two Colourful Veg

Politicians love sound bites – if they can capture the essence of their message in a quick memorable phrase then over half their job is done. One of the dangers of this approach is that the words can come back to bite you.

This has happened to probably the most successful healthcare slogan of the last 10 years “Eat 5-a-day”. Everyone knows that this means a healthy diet con-tains a combination of 5 fruit or vegetables a day. Unfortunately not everyone interprets the message in the same way. Three potatoes, a glass of orange juice and a bunch of grapes is not what was intend-ed.

The aim of the 5-a-day campaign was to reduce fat intake (thus helping reduce cardiovascular disease) and increase fibre consumption (to protect against bowel cancer). Unfortunately as a result of the suc-cess of this message we have had an unintended large increase in sugar ingestion, now considered a bad thing.

All foods can be broken down into proteins, sugars (carbohydrates), fats and fibre. Fruit contains lots of sugars whilst vegetables vary in their ratios of carbo-hydrate to fibre (potatoes at one end and cabbage at the other). Excess sugar in a diet leads to the ener-gy being converted and stored as fats. There is now a strong argument that the obesity epidemic in Brit-ain has been stoked by the 5-a-day campaign. Weight gain increases the risks of diabetes. Diabe-tes increases the risks cardiovascular disease and bowel cancer!

Research now clearly shows that the best diet to eat is a balanced one. If the number of calories con-sumed equals the number expended you will not gain weight. Eating oily fish and Mediterranean olive oil based salads is good for the heart. Brightly col-oured fruit and vegetables best reduce the risk of cancer.

So a better slogan would have been – something green, something red, something chewy and slightly difficult to digest – it’s just not as snappy. Alterna-tively you will not go wrong with one fruit and two veg daily (going light on the potatoes).

Do you have an older pet that would benefit from an assessment

with a Veterinary Nurse?

The older pet population in the UK is increasing all the time. With the advances in veterinary medicine that are now available, the increased focus on pre-ventative healthcare and the fact that our pets are cherished members of the family, it is happy news that many of our pets are now living well into their teenage years.

With this increase in lifespan comes changes to the requirements that our pets have, including nutrition, exercise, lifestyle and veterinary care to name just a few. Tailoring each of these individually to your pet will ensure that their health is maximised and quality of life is maintained for as long as possible. But how can we tell the difference between a ‘normal ageing change’ and something that requires closer attention?

Many changes will develop gradually and increase slowly over time, meaning that they may not always be noticed at first. Some tell-tale signs that may be seen are listed below: • Inability to jump onto a favourite seat or get up-

stairs, difficulty in getting up after rest • Change in behaviour • Reduction in interest or ability to exercise • Change in eating pattern or preference • Drinking and/or urinating more • Disorientation • Changed sleep patterns & increased sleeping • Weight loss or gain

Medications and lifestyle changes can successfully help manage many of these changes. Early identifi-cation and intervention will help increase the success of any treatment or management programme and mean that your pet can carry on a healthy and active life for longer.

What can I do if I think my pet is affected by any of these changes?

If you are concerned about your pet’s health then it is wise to take them to your surgery for a check-up. Your pet will also need to continue with their routine vaccine and worming treatments so this presents an ideal time to discuss any changes you may have seen with the vet or nurse. Discussing your pets’ behaviour at home is very important; we can then decide with you if we need to do anything extra for your pet to keep them in tip-top condition.

If you have any query about your pet’s health then please contact your veterinary surgery and get an appointment with a vet for a specific concern or a Veterinary nurse can see him or her for a general check and answer any questions you may have.

105 is a new three-digit number being launched in September, that people can call to report or get infor-mation about power cuts. You can also call 105 with any welfare concerns related to a power cut, or if you are worried about the safety of over or underground electricity cables or substations.

105 is free of charge and will put you through to your electricity network operator. You can call 105 from most landlines and mobile phones. There is also a website, www.powercut105.com providing people with more information and signposting them to their network operator.

A lot of people don’t know who to call to report or get updates about power cuts, with many wrongly calling the energy supply companies they pay their bills to. 105 aims to solve this problem, the service is jointly funded by electricity network operators. Electricity network operators are the companies that manage and maintain the underground cables, overhead lines and substations that bring electricity into homes and businesses.
