POPPY RECYCLE

In response to questions from residents, Keith Brett has checked with the British Legion regarding recycling. The Der-byshire Administrator has confirmed that all poppy products are made from recyclable material and can be disposed of in the appropriate manner or used again next year.

15 MINUTE BREXIT

Anyone who didn’t go to this excellent production by the Cen-tenary Players missed a real treat. Presented in a way that only the Players know how, this was a highly amusing insight into our current national tragedy, based around a master of tragedy, “Will Shakespeare”. Now we know what the “Will” of the People is all about, and we also learned how it is most likely to end, with the entire cast in floods of tears as the cur-tain fell. Well done to everyone involved!

The meeting on 12th November, organised by the Parish Council to discuss options for bus operations in the village was attended by approximately 50 residents and a member of the County Council bus team. PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Bus turning project: A report on this project can be read on the front page of this edition. One view expressed at the meeting was that not enough documentation exists for the delays which have been experienced. Please could any residents who have had prob-lems with buses either not arriving or failing to pass through the village please make a note of the date and time of service and send the information to either the Bradwell News or to the Parish Clerk. Flooding: Following the recent flooding, council have approached the Environment Agency and requested a meeting to review the factors causing the problem. It is proving difficult to get hold of the right people due to the extreme flooding elsewhere which is demanding all their time. We will continue to press them for a meeting and will keep everyone updated. This incident has highlighted the value of our flood wardens. If anyone would like to become a warden and help out please contact the par-ish clerk (623485) or [email protected]

Parish Council Vacancies: Peter Wallis has resigned from Council, which means we now have three vacancies. We thank Peter for his contribution and wish him well for the future. If you are interested in joining council please contact the Council Chair Cllr Downing at [email protected] or the Parish Clerk at [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to join a pro-active council and we encourage residents to consider joining. Waste management contract: Council have been advised by District Councillor Furness that Derbyshire Dales District Council have received five bids for the waste management contract which services Bradwell. DDDC are currently reviewing the bids. S137 Grant Fund: Council has awarded a grant of £680 to the Centenary Play-ers for the purchase of specialist and more up to date lighting equipment. Council Precept 2020/21: Council has begun considering budgets for the coming finan-cial year. A decision on the precept will be taken at the Janu-ary parish council meeting

Car parking: There are two spaces available to rent at Softwater Lane Car Park. The cost is £25 pcm or £300 annual. If you are interest-ed please contact the parish clerk

Public Participation: Residents continue to attend council meetings to raise matters of concern directly with Council. We welcome members of the public at both the main council and all committee meetings. Council meetings are generally held at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of most months in the Methodist Lounge on Town-gate. See the parish notice boards (on the side of the Memori-al Hall and in the Peace Gardens bus shelter) for meeting announcements and agendas. Contacts: Parish Clerk (623485) or [email protected] Council Chair (623941) or [email protected]

BRADWELL FLOODING

Nobody can have failed to notice that we have had a bit of wa-ter in the village during November. The many factors which contribute to the brook flooding are in the control of a number of different agencies, and the Parish Council are in touch with the key ones, such as Derbyshire County Council and the Envi-ronment Agency with the intention of getting everyone round a table and talking through/agreeing what can be done to im-prove the situation. A problem we have run into is that, bad though our flooding was, other areas have had it much worse, and all the key people have been engaged in addressing those areas first. But we plan to persevere and will definitely be keep-ing everyone in the picture. As a flood warden I wanted to say how much I and the other wardens appreciated the way so many people turned out to help us. Not just the residents most immediately affected, but also people from all over the village, who turned up in the wind and rain to see what they could do to help. I think I speak for all involved when I send my sincere thanks to all those good peo-ple. One of the things the wardens are planning is a debrief so we can go through what went well and what didn't go quite as well. We will be publishing the date of that meeting in case anyone would like to attend, especially if you have ideas for improving the way the flood was handled. We are also hopeful that we can expand the number of trained wardens. A key fac-tor in tackling this sort of situation is having people available who know where the things are kept (barriers, lights, signs etc.) and know how to access them. At the moment we have five wardens, but some travel frequently and so are not always available at short notice. The more trained people we have, the better the chance of being able to muster four or five at short notice. Please be thinking about this until we meet, but if you would like to volunteer, please e-mail the Bradda News and we will make sure the necessary steps are taken. Paul Downing

We have received the following poem from our village Bard, reflecting on the poppies and simple messages which featured everywhere in the village, remembering lost loved ones.

POPPIES RED

The common poppy, with petals red, Our Nation’s emblem for wartime dead. Now, dress our village so all can see

A simple Tribute, in Memory.

Their sacrifices, beyond belief Are still remembered through love and grief By family and friends who’ll not forget Nor cannot repay the massive debt.

Messages written on poppies red,

In dedication, lovingly said.

Thinking of loved ones, so long ago

In some foreign field where poppies grow.

POETRY IN THE POST

Here in class one at Bradwell Junior School we have been working hard writing our own poems. We have been inspired by the book we are currently reading – “The Iron Man” by Ted Hughes. We were incredibly proud of our poems and wanted to share them with people in the village. We walked around Bradwell, randomly choosing homes to post our poems. We have done this before, but this time we received so many thank you letters about our poems that we wanted to say a huge thank you to you all for taking the time to write back to us. We hope you have enjoyed reading them as much as we have writing them. Keep an eye on your letter boxes for more won-der writing from Bradwell Junior School! Please can we also take this chance to wish you all a very Happy Christmas from everyone at Bradwell Junior School.

CPR SESSION

Can you give CPR? While on Holiday in Houston earlier this year Les King had a heart attack. It was some fast thinking and the ability of his son to undertake CPR that saved his life. Les is fine now, but it inspired Deborah, his wife, and Les to train as many people as possible in CPR. On 29th November in the Memorial Hall, and with help from our own local first responder Nick McCloud, we trained 35 people to undertake CPR, resus-citation and the use of a defibrillator along with a winter aware-ness session. Everyone went away knowing they could at-tempt CPR and that, when time is crucial it’s better to do something rather than nothing. We have already had requests for a follow-up session and are looking at something towards the end of March. Watch out for it on the community forum and in Bradwell News. Many thanks to Deborah & Les King, Nick McCLoud and to the Parish Council for financial support.

GLYNNE WILLIAM ELLIOTT

Glynne was born on 13th July 1933 at New-lands Farm, Coplow Dale, where he lived with his parents Mary and William and sis-ter, Joyce. He was educated at Great Hucklow School and Bishop Pursglove School in Tideswell. After leaving school he spent a year working on a farm in Mat-lock before returning to Newlands to farm

alongside his father. He continued to work the family farm until ill health forced him to retire 4 years ago. He married Isabella Fletcher of Heather Field, Jeffrey Lane, Bradwell at St. Barna-bas Church on 24th November 1956 and they went on to have 4 sons. The boys have memories of helping on the farm and admit that their father was a “hard taskmaster”. Glynne was always very interested in motor vehicles. In his youth he had a passion for motorbikes and rode to many destinations with his cousin Eric, whilst Isabella enjoyed riding pillion during their courtship days. In 1954 he took delivery of a brand new “Fergie” tractor, which was his pride and joy. In 1971, having decided to branch out into haulage, he bought a new 8 ton green British Leyland lorry GWE 2J. Other interests included singing and for several years, he was a member of Tideswell Male Voice Choir. He enjoyed writing, especially letter writing. He also liked to recount tales of when soldiers were stationed in the “Soldiers’ Field” in Coplow Dale in WW2. For the past 4 years Glynne was cared for at Masson House Care Home in Matlock Bath, where he died on 21st October 2019. A funeral service was held at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium on 4th No-vember. Glynne leaves his wife Isabella, sons David, Stephen and Andrew, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His son Paul, predeceased him in 1965.

Personal announcements DR. JAMES EDWARD STANGROOM

25th September, 1937 to 13th October, 2019

Born in Edgware, London, and brought up in Norfolk, where his father had a business, Jim had lived in Castleton before moving to Hugh Lane in Bradwell. He graduated from Magdalene Col-lege, Cambridge with an MA in Natural Sciences. He then stud-ied for a PhD in the Department of Chemistry at Sheffield Univer-sity where he continued to work as a research scientist after ob-taining his Doctorate. From 1983 to 2001, he ran a business at

Vincent Works, Brough investigating electro- rheological flu-ids, ERDG FLUIDS. This work was principally for the MOD and for the Norwegian and Royal Navy. In 1989 his research led to the successful lifting of a Russian submarine from wa-ter one mile deep, 100 miles off Bear Island. His scientific achievements in diverse fields of research, brought him glob-al recognition and he was awarded 18 patents. After retiring from business, he did FE lecturing, especially in the USA and as recently as 2 years ago, he was offering A Level tuition. Jim loved classical poetry and would often quote long pas-sages from memory. He was interested in old weaponry and falconry and he was fond of cooking and fine eating. Perhaps he was best known in Bradwell for his eccentric driving and his resemblance to Father Christmas! A service to celebrate Jim’s life was held at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium on 7th November,2019. Jim’s family would like to thank everyone for their help and kind messages of support.
