This brings the total raised for the four breakfasts up to £645, for the St. Barnabas Church roof repairs. A wonderful effort and thank you very much to all who supported, plus a special thank you to Richard and Helen Plant and their helpers for organising the breakfasts. Many who supported the breakfasts expressed the view that these events were a good social get together, and a pleasant way to raise funds. For those who would prefer to eat later in the day it is now planned to hold a "Brunch" at Richard and Helen's on Thursday 20th January 2011 between 11am and 1pm. The most recent session took place on Thursday, November 25 on Castleton Road, an area which has been highlighted by local residents as a concern. In just over an hour ten motorists were found to be travelling above the 30mph limit and the owners will receive letters from Community Speed Watch, advising them of their speed and requesting that they respect local limits. Driv- ers are also warned that if they are caught breaking the speed limit again they may face a fine and points on their licence. Speeding traffic is also a priority for the Hathersage Area SNT on the A623 around and between Calver Crossroads and Cal- ver Bridge, but Community Speed Watch make checks in differ- ent locations in the area where people say speeding is an is- sue. PC Ian Richardson, of the Hathersage Area SNT said: "With the help of the local community, we are able to get the message across to motorists that they have a responsibility to respect and stay within the speed limits across the area.” Community Speed Watch first started in the area in 2009 after a successful trial period within other parts of Derbyshire, where the community raised concerns about the issue in their area. At present there are four volunteers from across the area that are fully trained to use the speed radar guns. Volunteers spend around an hour with officers, checking traffic and recording de- tails but the team would like to see more people involved in the initiative. PARISH COUNCIL NOTES Lafarge – At the December Lafarge/Parish Council meeting, works manager Ashley Bryan reported that new signs have been erected around the quarry to discourage large lorries from coming down the narrow lanes into Bradwell. This has been achieved in cooperation with Bradwell Parish Council. Hope Works strong performance during the past year has seen cement sales improve by 5% on what was planned. Hope works was the 3rd most utilised Lafarge works in Europe in 2010. Cement sales in 2011 are predicted to be similar to 2010. A PSP (processed sewage pellets) trial is due to take place early in 2011. If this is a success PSP will eventually replace MBM (meat and bone meal) as an alternative fuel. Another fuel that Lafarge have been looking at is tyre fluff, which if used would be burnt in the front end of the kiln as opposed to the tyre chips which are currently burnt in the back end. A trial involving 100% replacement of shale with PSP (power station fly ash - 15% of the raw mix) has proved suc-cessful with no impact on cement quality, but with noticeable reductions in some emissions. A discussion took place follow-ing a complaint regarding the colour of the plume from the main works chimney. This complaint had been reported to the PDNPA and the Environment Agency, as well as Lafarge. The works manager said that any such complaints are monitored as they are received and photos of the plume are immediately taken from various locations. He stressed that all emissions from the main stack are well within the set limits. Some re-claimed land in the quarry area is in the process of being fenced off – enabling three new fields to be used for grazing. Chris Furness

sal Dale and the Wye Valley. Filming is also being carried out for a BBC Four documentary on the issue and crews came out with officers during the last project day on Sunday, 28th November. Residents and off-road riders and drivers have also been invited to air their views at regular meetings in Bakewell alongside police officers and representatives from off road user groups, Safer Derbyshire Dales Commu-nity Safety Partnership, Derbyshire County Council and the Peak District National Park Authority. PC Lowe stated; “There is no doubt in my mind that it is a rogue element of drivers and riders that we seek to influence and I am thankful for the continued partnership working. The positive progres-sion of this project will continue to improve the quality of life of residents and as a police service it is important we are seen to play our part serving residents and other interested parties in preserving the Peak District in a state that we would wish to see it in for future generations. The national televi-sion interest of Countryfile and the BBC Four documentary next year can only enhance the profile of Operation Black-brook.” BBC Four is continuing to film footage alongside the Peak District National Park Authority for a documentary which is expected to be aired late 2011.

OPERATION BLACKBROOK ON THE TELE

Operation Blackbrook is a long-term partnership initiative which was set up to reduce the impact of irresponsible off-roading in the Peak District on local residents and the country-side. Project days are held throughout the year at different locations, involving officers from Roads Policing Unit and Safer Neighbourhood officers, together with Peak District Na-tional Park Rangers and representatives from off road user groups. While the team carries out spot checks, the main focus of the campaign is to engage with 4x4 drivers and mo-torcycle riders to highlight their rights and responsibilities on lawful off-road tracks. Specialist information leaflets provided by the Peak District National Park and Tread Lightly, an or-ganisation which aims to educate and promote responsible recreation are also handed out to off-roaders. This police operation recently featured on the BBC “Countryfile” pro-gramme after BBC presenter John Craven and his film crew visited Bakewell police station on Monday 29th November to chat to PC Kevin Lowe, who has coordinated the campaign from its launch in April 2007. They also held part of the inter-view for the programme at Monsal Head, to get a backdrop of the Derbyshire Dales, including beautiful views towards Mon-

BRADWELL PRE SCHOOL

The children of Bradwell Pre-School have had a very busy November and December. They had a special treat on Thurs-day 18th November when they visited Bradwell Fire Station. They watched a video on fire safety and were shown around the fire station. Some of the children got to try on the fireman’s uniform and they all had fun using the hose and sitting in the fire engine. All the children had a really fun morning but also learned about fire safety at the same time. A big thank you to Bradwell Fire Station for their kind co-operation and for supply-ing each child with a storybook on fire safety, amongst other goodies.

During an action packed December the children spent time practicing a number of Carols and songs which they performed on 17th December to an audience of parents, and were then treated to a surprise visit from Santa. They also had an end of

OBITUARIES We receive obituaries in a variety of ways - hand delivered, in the mail, by e-mail or sometimes even in the form of newspa-per cuttings sent on to us. However, the majority are col-lected and prepared by a Bradwell News staff member, Walter Rowland. When sending an obituary please go through Wal-ter if possible. You can reach him on 621262. Also, please remember you can also enclose/attach a photo of your loved one and we will do what we can to print it with the obituary.

MR LESLIE HENRY BROUARD Leslie Brouard died at home on 22nd November aged 88 years. Born in St Peters Port, Guernsey, youngest of the eight children of George and Mary Brouard, he attended school in St Peters Port before starting work in a bakery. When war broke out he and a friend were evacuated to Stock-port. He then worked on the railway before moving to Sissons at Calver Mill. In 1947 he married Dorothy Popybus and they lived at Froggatt Edge until Dorothy died. Leslie moved to Hope and then Baslow before coming to Bradwell in 1994. He was a keen walker, doing ‘Wainwright’ walks and the long distance footpaths, in Bradwell he joined the Tuesday Walk-ers. He was interested in the Natural World, photography and enjoyed listening to Classical Music. He leaves a daughter Jane, son Christopher, grandson Andrew and granddaughter Andrea. His wife and all his siblings pre-deceased him. Cre-mation was at Chesterfield followed by a service of Thanks-giving at St Barnabas Church on 9th December.

TINSEL AND TURKEY OUTING This year's Tinsel and Turkey outing was to Skegness, from 29th November to 3rd December, complete with real snow! Even the beach was covered, see the photograph. However, despite the weather all the arranged activities and visits took place with only a minor adjustment to the programme. Many thanks to John and Mary for looking after us so well, nothing is a problem for them and everyone has a hassle-free time.

REBELLION KNOLL W.I. Thought of joining the WI? We have a varied and interesting programme for 2011 including a Stone Waller with a differ-ence, make your own Cake Decorations and Notorious and Famous women in Derbyshire, and our very own County President will also pay us a visit. If you would like to join please contact our secretary Rosy Smith on 620100 or Vanessa Horstead on 623053. We start off the New Year with our Christmas Meal in January followed by what promises to be a really entertaining evening in February in the company of 'John and Kate – then there were two', an audio visual experi-ence with a difference. In December we were entertained by our local Magistrate John Horstead who gave an informative and sometimes humorous account of life in the Magistrates Court. Magistrates are bound by laws and tariffs, sometimes

arcane, which can lead to frustration at times – especially when dealing with uninsured drivers on benefits. One thing that has been borne out time and time again however, is never believe all you read in the newspaper, there are always two sides to every story. On a relatively humorous side John laid out the tariffs should you been found guilty of keeping a brothel – the ladies were warned! But to end on a serious note – if you are visiting someone who does not have a tele-vision licence DO NOT ANSWER THE DOOR to the licensing authorities. It is the person who answers the door who is liable for prosecution not the unlicensed owner!

TALENT SCHEME The last Talent Scheme Coffee Morning will be on Saturday January 15th in St. Barnabas Church from 10am to noon. If you have not given in your stake money and profit, it will be collected at this meeting. Refreshments will be served and we hope that everyone will enjoy the morning.
