The Seaside Past and Present

All classes in the Juniors have performed an assembly to their parents

this year on a whole range of different topics. Year 1 entertained their

audience recently with a fantastic production about their topic of

‘Seasides Past and Present’. The children were full of confidence as

they donned their costumes and shared their knowledge.

Early Years Celebration of the Year

On Friday 7 July we celebrated the many achievements of our Early Years, both in and out of the classroom. The children were very excited to entertain the large crowd of family and friends and show off all the hard work that they have completed over the year.

Kindergarten and Lower Kindergarten sang a fun-filled rendition of ‘Down in the Jungle’ complete with animal headbands, before telling the audience about their recent trip to Barleylands Farm. Reception then

shared some of their favourite memories from the year, followed by an energetic ‘Handa’s Walk’. Mrs Osborn was very proud to award all of the children with a certificate of achievement.

All pupils behaved extremely well throughout the whole event. It was a fantastic way to round off what has been a very successful year for Early Years children.

Reception’s Forest Adventure

Reception Class went for a walk to Knighton Wood this month. The children were comparing their local forest to a rainforest as part of their topic work. They also visited the pond and saw a mother duck with her babies.

As they walked through the forest they saw squirrels climbing the trees and heard different birds singing. They finished their walk at the swing park where everyone enjoyed an ice lolly treat before climbing the hill back up to school.

Year 9 Investigations

Year 9 carried out a heart dissection this term in Biology where they are learning about the organisation of the circulatory system.

They enjoyed getting to see and feel the organ up close and relate the real structures to the diagrams in books. They looked at how the valves work by holding the hearts under a stream of tap

water and seeing how the chambers of the heart filled with water and forced the valves to close. It was a fascinating learning experience and Year 9 really seemed to get stuck in!

Kindergarten’s Creative Animal Displays

This term Kindergarten have been looking at different kinds of animals and their habitats. They had a fantastic day out when they visited Barleylands Farm where they made gingerbread and fed lots of animals including goats, sheep, chickens and long eared rabbits. They also got to milk a pretend cow with udders and took a ride on a tractor. Once returning to school they made their own display to replicate what they had seen.

The children have also been learning about the animals that live in the ocean. They looked at different types of shells and made a hermit crab using coloured sand, an inky jelly fish, painted rainbow fish and made a 3D scary shark and a big blue whale.

Year 11 Graduation Dinner

Year 11 and staff gathered in the Belmonte Suite at Chigwell Hall for their Leaver’s Meal on Friday 30 June. Pupils dressed in formal dresses and enjoyed a three course meal of their choice. The tables were decorated with Braeside colours and there were many opportunities to have photos taken in their finery. It was a lovely evening helped by the great weather and delicious food. It was a fantastic way to say goodbye to our Year 11 Leavers.

Moving Up Day

Year 5 pupils from the Junior site and existing and new Year 6 pupils enjoyed a taster day at the Senior site on Thursday 29 June. Pupils and parents were welcomed by the staff and Mrs Osborn for an overview of the day before pupils got to spend time getting to know their form tutor and looking around the school.

Pupils had a taster Languages and Science lesson using circuits and fruits. Pupils then took part in a fun subject knowledge quiz and a challenging orienteering activity that led them all over the school. Lunchtime caused some excitement as the children got to use the new servery and canteen – pupils were amazed at the choice they had. In the afternoon there was a very energetic games session. All of the activities were to promote team skills, communication and problem solving abilities. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and are very much looking forward to starting in September.

Summer Fete

FOBS organised a delightful fete on Sunday 9 July on the lawn and in the marquee of the Senior grounds. There were commercial stalls, tombolas, games and activities for pupils to take part in. The stalls were kindly run by Senior pupils and parent helpers. Bombetta

Restaurant provided a BBQ and FOBS helpers made vegetarian platters. The Braeside Café were selling cakes made by pupils ranging from elaborate cupcakes, traditional strudel and fresh patisserie cakes. The day had a lovely community feel about it and the girls enjoyed themselves. The raffle offered some excellent prizes to. A huge thank you to FOBS, parents and pupils for organising a great event.

Lower Kindergarten Explore Under the Sea

This half term Lower Kindergarten’s topic has been learning about different animals, where they live and what they eat.

‘Under the Sea’ proved to be the favourite thing to learn about as everyone enjoyed reading about the ‘Rainbow Fish’, which is all about sharing. Pupils painted their own Rainbow Fish using sparkle paint and colours and created a very vibrant display for their classroom.

Sports Day 2017

The whole school gathered at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on Wednesday 21 June for the annual Braeside Sports Day. On a scorching hot day everyone was glad to be inside, as were the huge crowd that arrived to cheer on the competitive pupils! Senior pupils took part in sprint races, relay races and long distances races, whilst Junior pupils took part in sprints, obstacle races and even egg and spoon races!

Leading up to the events all children from Year 2 and above took part in whole House field events in which every child contributed to an overall score for their House. Pupils performed exceptionally well and it certainly got them in the competitive spirit for the running events at the official Sports Day.

On the day there were some nervous faces, however they quickly turned into excited ones as the events got under way. The Year 1, Reception and Kindergarten children ran great races and showed lots of determination to succeed.

There were some fantastic performances from the pupils from Year 2 upwards with plenty of team spirit across the board. The culmination of the races was the whole house 2000m relay in which there were representatives from each House from Years 2 – 10. It was a brilliant team event which was cheered on enthusiastically from the side-lines.

At the end this year’s trophy was presented to Nightingale House who were the overall winners of Sports Day.

Year 1 Suntrap Visit

Year 1 have recently paid a visit to the Suntrap Educational Centre where they had the opportunity to learn about all the animals that can be found in the local forest. Following this the pupils enjoyed a nature walk where they tried to spot all the animals and creatures that they had previously learnt about. It was a lovely day and the children loved being about to get out and about and explore the environment that they are lucky enough to have right on their doorstep.

Sporting Awards

This month at the Senior site saw the Annual Sports Round-Up Assembly to celebrate the numerous sporting successes throughout the year. Certificates, postcards and ribbons were given to a number of pupils for their participation and commitment to PE.

Everyone should be very proud of the hard work and determination that they have shown throughout the year.

Making a Mosaic Masterpiece

As part of their humanities work, Year 5 have been working hard designing and making Ancient Greek mosaic tiles. The children were given a range of different templates that they could use as ideas, but the planning stage still took a lot of time and preparation. When it came to actually creating the mosaics, the children were surprised about how fiddly it was, but the finished results were fantastic.

Commedia Dell’Arte

Commedia dell’arte is a theatrical form characterized by improvised dialogue and a cast of colorful stock characters that emerged in northern Italy in the fifteenth century and rapidly gained popularity throughout Europe. Year 8 Drama pupils have been studying this form as part of their syllabus and yesterday afternoon took the opportunity to showcase their most recent assessment piece to their parents in the studio. It was

a clever and hilarious performance and the pupils acted confidently to an intimate crowd. Well done everyone, the audience could all see how hard you have been working in class!

Gifted and Talented Academic Challenge Day

On Wednesday 5 July, some of the gifted and talented pupils from Year 10 took part in an academic challenge day held at Forest School.

Pupils participated in a range of challenging and enjoyable workshops given by Forest School teachers. These, alongside some guided research time with both teachers and sixth form pupils, were aimed to prepare students for a United Nations style debate which took place in the afternoon.

In the Model UN style (MUN) conference event pupils took on the role of delegates representing a country. They debated the issue of international migration from the perspective of their given countries. They

needed to get inside the mind-set of their given country, not just giving their own opinions. The debates were lively and at times tense. Pupils were put on the spot and rose to the challenge showing independence, maturity and fantastic communication skills. Well done to them all.

Year 10 Investigations

This week Year 10 Biology have been modelling kidney dialysis. In a

dialysis machine a person’s blood flows through partially permeable

membranes. Year 10 have set up investigations to show how a

partially permeable

membrane can allow

diffusion of some

molecules (such as

glucose) but not others

(such as starch or

protein). They are using their models to help explain what happens

in a real dialysis machine.

Year 7 Clown Around

Year 7 have produced some lovely hand puppets. They have been exploring a range of materials, skills and techniques to produce these colourful characters! Pupils used a range of materials including papier-mâché, foam, clay sculpting and sewing. The class are now working in groups to devise a puppet show performance.

Complicated Chemistry with Year 9

Year 9 have had a fun last Chemistry lesson of the summer term. They have been studying the structure and properties of giant covalent structures. Having made detailed posters of the bonding and properties of these structures they set about trying to build 3D models. Diamond and graphene were popular choices. The pupils made a fantastic effort as it proved to be difficult finding the accurate angles to place the toothpick ‘bonds’.

Speech Day and Prize Giving

Braeside had a lovely afternoon on Friday 7 July celebrating the year with the annual Speech Day and Prize Giving. A huge marquee was set up in the school grounds and was filled with proud pupils, teachers, family and friends.

This year the guest speaker was Diane Gilson-Butler, a Youth Engagement Officer from the Epping Forest District Council. It was fantastic to hear about her work with the council and how important it is to represent the voice of young people. The speech was especially inspiring as two pupils from Braeside are currently members of the Epping Forest Youth Council.

As well as a large selection of prizes awarded to many deserving pupils, the afternoon was also packed with performances. The Senior Choir sang a fantastic rendition of Emeli Sande’s ‘Read All About It’, there were a selection of poems read by the Year 5 LAMDA pupils and the Junior Choir entertained us all with an action packed ‘Yellow Submarine’.

A big well done to every pupil who won a prize, but everyone should be very proud of their progress this year!
