BREED SHAPERS, LIFECHANGERS AT MAGICS

By Kelsey Riley

The Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale has been on a

steady upward trend over the last five years and Australasia=s

season-opening yearling sale, set for Jan. 10 to 16, is set to stay

true to its mantra Abreed shapers and life changers.@ The gross

for Book 1 of the sale hit A$135,188,500 in 2017, up from

A$67,984,500 in 2013. While the numbers catalogued have also

risen so too has the quality, with the average reaching

A$205,142 last year, having been A$134,092 five years ago.

Perhaps the most significant figure is the sale=s clearance rate: it

has been at least 85% the last five years and last year was 88%.

It is well-documented that this healthy market is not singular

to this sale alone in Australia, or even to Magic Millions; the

racing and bloodstock industries are booming Down Under, and

this is likely due to a myriad of factors, like a healthy prizemoney

structure across all levels of racing, the popularity of syndicates

that help fill out all levels of the market at the sales, and a heavily

commercial breeding industry that sees many of the best yearlings

offered for sale. A number of the truly top stallions over the

last 20 years--the likes of Snippets (Aus), Snitzel (Aus), Not a

Single Doubt (Aus), General Nediym (Aus), Testa Rossa (Aus),

Savabeel (Aus), Written Tycoon (Aus) and Sebring (Aus)--have

come out of the Gold Coast sale, and the fact that those kinds of

multi-million dollar stallion prospects are available for purchase

at all levels of the market has seen overseas buyers flock to

Australia in recent years for a chance to get in on the action.

It is also a rather unique feature of the Australian bloodstock

market that its horses have a strong resale value to Asian

markets, so even those that don=t hit the top tier still have a

chance to pay for themselves.

Barbara Banke=s Stonestreet Stable has been both a buyer and

a seller at the top of the market at Magic Millions in recent

years, and in a promotional video produced by Aushorse,

Stonestreet representative John Moynihan said, Aso many of the

horses that the Australian breeders as a group raise come to the

marketplace. You get a shot at buying what is considered the

best down there and that was very appealing to us. They sell

such a good product and they have so many offshoots for their

product. People can buy that product and race it in Australia.

They can go to Hong Kong and Singapore and be top-tier horses

there.@

Sheikh Fahad=s Qatar Racing has become increasingly active

Down Under with the first crop of its young sire Zoustar (Aus)

now on the track, and his racing and bloodstock manager David

Redvers said, AThe really exciting thing about the sales is you=re

going to get a large number of the best-bred horses in Australia

there. The majority of the breeders are commercial so they send

their best stock to the market, whereas it=s very difficult for

example in the UK to buy the best Dubawi or the best Galileo,

because those are almost all in private hands.@

WinStar Farm has made a big splash in Australia, mainly in

partnerships with China Horse Club, and it was rewarded earlier

this year when Gold Coast graduate Invader (Aus) (Snitzel Aus})

stamped himself a serious stallion prospect with a win in the G1

Sires= Produce S. WinStar=s Elliott Walden explained the

investment to Aushorse, saying, Aone of my first entries into

Australia was going down to try to buy Pierro, and I found it

extremely difficult, extremely competitive and extremely

expensive. All three of those things led me to think it=s a good

place to try to get some stallions.@

Results in the Ring and On The Track... Fast-forward to the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale, and some serious stallion prospects--Pierro (Aus),

Vancouver (Aus), Capitalist (Aus) and Dissident (Aus) also came

out of this sale--and some genuinely great racehorses--think

Winx (Aus), who cost A$230,000 here, and Redzel (Aus), a

A$120,000 graduate--will once again be on offer for those savvy

enough to find them. The catalogue is up in numbers for the

third straight year, with 1,062 youngsters set to be offered in

Books 1 and 2 through Jan. 14.

A>Breed shapers and life changers= is our line this year, and the

breed shapers is what we=re about, to be able to sell these

colts,@ said Magic Millions Bloodstock Manager and soon-to-be

Managing Director Barry Bowditch. AYou have so many of these

guys--the Henry Field syndicate, James Harron, Guy Mulcaster,

Michael Wallace--stepping into the market to buy a racehorse

that can potentially become a stallion. It must make them feel

good about what they=re doing when they see so many stallions

coming out of this sale. And it=s been from the start, starting

with Snippets and then Snitzel, Not A Single Doubt, Written

Tycoon--the list goes on. Now we have your Vancouvers, your

Pierros, your Capitalists, Dissidents. To be able to sell horses for

good money but then they go on to be successful on the racetrack

and end up being sold for enormous money or stand for great

money, it=s quite fulfilling what we=re doing. It makes us feel like

we=re doing a great job selecting a catalogue and the vendors

are supporting us with their very best stock, which is probably

the biggest token of our appreciation to them.@ Cont. p3

The turning heads from all around the world no doubt help,

too.

AYou have the WinStars, John Moynihans and Jon Kellys from

America and in Europe you have Shadwell, and a lot of those

good agents like Johnny McKeever and John Warren stepping

down to have a look at what we=re doing and participate in our

market,@ Bowditch said. AFrom where the sale was to what it has

become is due to the fact that we are selling good horses, but all

the best buyers in the world are turning up here now. It=s a great

look for us and we want to keep building on that.@

The catalogue includes plenty of pages that will be familiar to

buyers from around the globe, including a Fastnet Rock (Aus)

colt from the family of Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) (lot 188); a

first-crop Deep Field (Aus) filly out of a daughter of the great

producer Monsoon Wedding (Aus) (Danehill), a full-sister to

three-time champion sire Redoute=s Choice (Aus) (lot 196); an

Exceed and Excel (Aus) colt from the family of Fastnet Rock (lot

225); colts out of three-quarter-sisters Ashley=s Kitty (Tale of the

Cat) (by Deep Field, lot 514) and Heart Ashley (Lion Heart) (by

Snitzel, lot 795), both stakes-winning sisters to this year=s GI

Gold Cup winner Cupid (Tapit); a Medaglia d=Oro colt from the

prosperous Niarchos family of champions Spinning World,

Pathfork and Aldebaran (lot 760); a Snitzel (Aus) half-sister to

world champion sprinter and effective dual hemisphere sire

Starspangledbanner (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) (lot 767) and a Fastnet

Rock granddaughter of Angelic Song (Halo), a Grade I-producing

half-sister to the great producer Glorious Song (lot 776).

The catalogue includes 60 yearlings that are out of or siblings

to Group 1 winners, and those include a full-sister to Pasadena

Girl (Aus) (Savabeel {Aus}) (lot 132). Cont. p4

There is also a Fastnet Rock (Aus) colt out of Pear Tart (Aus)

(Dehere) and therefore a full to Group 2-placed 2-year-old Italia

Bella (Aus) (lot 172); a full-brother to Single Gaze (Aus) (Not A

Single Doubt {Aus}) (lot 229); a Snitzel (Aus) filly out of the dual

Group 1 winner Response (Aus) (Charge Forward {Aus}) and

therefore a half-sister to the stakes-placed Alter Call (Aus)

(Fastnet Rock {Aus}) (lot 235); a full-sister to G2 Silver Slipper S.

winner Headwater (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) out of River

Dove (Aus), whose progeny have sold for up to A$4 million (lot

240); a Snitzel filly out of Samaready (Aus) (More Than Ready)

(lot 269); the first foal of

Shamal Wind (Aus) (Dubawi

{Ire}), a colt by Sea The Stars

who is the lone representative

of his sire in the sale (lot 292);

a Pierro filly out of four-time

Group 1 winner Streama (Aus)

(Stratum {Aus}) (lot 352); an I Am Invincible (Aus) half-brother to

Sepoy (Aus) (Elusive Quality) (lot 435); a full-brother to Sizzling

(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) (lot 480); a half-brother to this year=s

Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain

{Aus}) by first-season sire Time For War (Aus) (lot 635); a Fastnet

Rock half-sister to Classic winner Fiveandahalfstar (Aus) (Hotel

Grand {Aus}) (lot 642); a half-sister to Caulfield Cup winner

Fawkner (Aus) (Reset {Aus}) by first-season sire Shooting To Win

(Aus) (lot 651) and a full-sister to Sweet Idea (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus})

and Showtime (Aus) (lot 733).

Bowditch said record numbers of buyers have been inspecting

the yearlings that reside in the Hunter Valley in recent weeks.

AWe had a lot of people in the Hunter Valley looking at yearlings

with us,@ he said. AI heard there were up to 80 people going

around the Valley looking at the 550 yearlings within the Valley,

so that=s record numbers. It just shows the interest in the sale

and the catalogue, and the reports coming back from most of

those guys is that they=re

happy with what they=ve seen;

they=ve seen horses they=d like

to try to buy. It=s a good

starting point.@

The fact that first-season

sires generate plenty of

interest and are sought after is a trend that transcends

continental borders, but it is perhaps nowhere more true than

at Magic Millions. Three years ago a Sepoy (Aus) colt topped the

Gold Coast sale at A$1.3 million, a record public auction price for

a first-season sire (before he himself bettered it at Easter three

months later). Cont. p5

The following year Pierro (Aus) was responsible for a A$1.6

million colt and a A$1.4 million filly from his first crop. Last year

Dundeel (NZ) featured with a A$900,000 colt.

A total of 104 sires are represented this year, with the 23 first-

season sires making up 25% of

the catalogue. Newgate=s speedy

Group 2 winner Deep Field (Aus)

(Northern Meteor {Aus}) leads

all sires with 56 catalogued, and

also represented is his year-

younger G1 Caulfield Guineas-

winning full-brother Shooting To

Win (Aus) (31 yearlings), who

stands at Darley. It certainly

doesn=t hurt those two that the

first crop of Zoustar (Aus),

another son of Northern

Meteor, was popular at this sale

last year, and Zoustar=s first

winner, Sunlight (Aus), is the

third favourite for the A$2-million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on

Jan. 13.

Also expected to create a stir with his 44 first-crop yearlings is

Australian Horse of the Year and Gold Coast graduate Dissident

(Aus) (Sebring {Aus}), who also stands at Newgate. Newgate also

stands Wandjina (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}). Other first-season sires

include Darley=s speedy son of I Am Invincible, Brazen Beau

(Aus), with 27, and dual Group 1 winner Hallowed Crown (Aus)

(Street Sense) with 10. Haras de

Bouquetot shuttlers Olympic

Glory (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) and

Toronado (Ire) (High Chaparral

{Ire}) have 19 and six,

respectively. Coolmore=s speedy

Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago

{Aus}) sits sixth among all sires

with 38, and his barnmate,

Galileo=s G1 Cox Plate winner

Adelaide (Ire), has four.

AThe first-season sires this year

are rather exciting,@ said

Bowditch. AI think it=s a stronger,

deeper crop of first-season sires

than we=ve ever had. From a

selling point of view first-season sires have done really well at

this sale.@ Cont. p6

AThis year on the track Spirit of Boom, who is our leading first-

season sire, he=s done a phenomenal job,@ he said. AHe=s had

three stakes winners in five days and last weekend we had the

first Epaulette and the first Zoustar win, which is the third-

favourite for the Magic Millions, so the first-season sires are

doing the job on the track, which creates a good image going

forward for the ones who are going to sell this year.@

Building A Brand... After 12 years with Magic Millions, Bowditch will after this

year=s Gold Coast sale graduate to the position of managing

director, with Vin Cox headed to Godolphin. Looking back on the

evolution of the company=s flagship sale, Bowditch said much of

the credit can go down to its promotion as a brand.

AThe brand has changed so much,@ Bowditch said. AThe image

it=s created and the amount of people we can get to the sale--on

the Friday afternoon before the raceday we can=t keep up with

the catering. It just shows when you put a fair bit of effort into

something and build the brand what a sale can become. Due to

the fact we are selling the very best horses at the moment,

we=re having an outstanding run on the racetrack and it all

bodes well for this sale in particular but the brand itself.@

The Gold Coast sale is a carnival that the local community and

iconic Australian brands truly rally behind.

ATourism Events Queensland are fantastic to us,@ Bowditch

said. AWe=ve always got a great load of sponsors behind us, and

then we build an event. We have a polo day to get people in

town early. Then we go into the barrier draw on the beach,

which is an amazing spectacle, and then from there into the sale

and then the A$10-million raceday. I daresay the Gold Coast Turf

Club will be booked out; I don=t think you=ll be able to buy a

ticket for the raceday. This far out to have it at that level is

phenomenal.@

The Magic Millions raceday, which precedes an annually

electric evening of selling across the street on the Saturday of

the sale, celebrated its first A$10-million renewal last year,

when it became the country=s first-ever A$10-million raceday.

Bowditch said the interest in all this year=s races, not just the

A$2-million 2YO Classic and A$1-million 3YO Guineas, has been

unprecedented, with connections clamouring to get an entry for

their non Magic Millions grads in this past weekend=s four

Doomben wildcard races.

AWe=re another year on with A$10 million and the interest in

every race, not just the 2- and 3-year-old races, is outstanding,@

said Bowditch. AWe have the wildcard races for the horses that

aren=t Magic Millions [they must be Australian-bred and not sold

by another sales company]. There [were] plenty of people trying

to get horses in by winning these races on Saturday. It=s showing

that the raceday is pulling horses to it.@

With a whole carnival of events, and almost assuredly a

champion or a few, set to be at the Gold Coast the second week

of January, there is a reason for everyone to make a visit to the

sunny Gold Coast.

Vega Magic Comeback Delayed Cont.

Vega Magic began 2017 in fine style when he bagged the

G1 Darley Goodwood at Morphettville in May on his first start

for the Lindsay Park team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom

Dabernig. The 5-year-old doubled his top-level tally when he

won the G1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie S. at Caulfield in

September before running second to Redzel (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus})

in the inaugural running of The Everest in October. He signed off

the year with a below par effort in the G1 Darley Classic and

connections will now have to be patient before seeing Vega

Magic back in competitive action in 2018.

"He'll probably be back to defend his Goodwood win in May,@

said Hayes. AHe won't run in the Newmarket [in March], we

haven't got time."

>CLAPPER= GEARING UP FOR AUTUMN Happy Clapper (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) was a model of consistency

throughout 2017 when he racked up three wins and five

seconds from 10 starts. One of those wins was gained in the G1

TAB Epsom H. at Randwick in September and Patrick Webster=s

gelding will again have Randwick on his agenda as his trainer

begins to focus on Autumn targets. Unlike last year, Happy

Clapper will be more selectively campaigned with just two major

races on his agenda.

AI really only want to give him a short campaign and focus on

the George Ryder and the Doncaster,@ Webster told Racing And

Sports.

Making his seasonal debut in the G1 George Ryder S. at

Rosehill on Mar. 24 could see the 7-year-old take on Winx (Aus)

(Street Cry {Ire}). That prospect is nothing new to Happy Clapper

as he came out the wrong side of that argument with the

brilliant mare on three occasions last year, though he did get to

STRONACH TO RECEIVEECLIPSE OF MERIT

Frank Stronach will receive the Eclipse Award of Merit in

recognition of his outstanding success in racing, breeding,

racetrack ownership and support of retired racehorse programs,

the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing

Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters announced

Tuesday.

AI am flattered and touched to be recognized with the

prestigious Eclipse Award of Merit,@ Stronach said. AHorses and

racing have been my passion, my labor of love, since I was a boy.

It=s been an honor to be part of this great sport and help in

creating world-class races, facilities and training centers with our

friends, partners and co-workers. What=s most important,

however, has been working and being around the incredible

horses. I want to share this award with all of those who have

contributed to all our success.@

Stronach, a native of Austria, emigrated to Canada in the

1950s and built a one-man tool and die shop in a rented garage

into Magna International, one of the world's largest and most

diversified suppliers of automotive components with annual

sales of more than $30 billion and over 120,000 employees in

close to 30 countries.

He purchased his first Thoroughbred in 1962 and by 1989 he

established Adena Springs near Versailles, Kentucky. The farm

has locations in Kentucky, Florida and Canada, and last year

Stronach announced plans to expand to California. Cont. p3

NEW NYTHA PRESIDENT TARGETS

WORKMEN=S COMP, ADDING NEW OWNERSby Bill Finley

With some of the best purses in the world and perhaps the

sport=s most iconic racetrack in Saratoga, New York racing be

should be a place everyone wants to race, but that=s not always

the case. Joe Appelbaum, appointed last month as the new head

of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association,

understands that there are impediments that keep some owners

and trainers away from New York. He wants to change that.

Appelbaum is one of two principals in Off The Hook, a

breeding, racing and sales company with offices in New York

and Ocala and says he=s been following New York racing for 30

plus years. Previously a member of the NYTHA Board of

Directors, he expressed a desire to take over when prior

president Rick Violette, Jr. decided not to seek reelection. He did

not want to be one of the people sitting on the sidelines

complaining. (Click to continue to p4)

Stronach to Receive Eclipse of Merit (cont. from p1)

Stronach has captured the outstanding breeder Eclipse Award

a record eight times (2000, 2004-2008; 2010-2011) and has

been honored as the outstanding owner on four occasions

(1998-2000, 2008).

Stronach-campaigned horses have

won five Eclipse Awards: Glorious

Song, 1980 older female; Macho

Uno, 2000 champion 2-year-old

male; Ghostzapper, the 2004 Horse

of the Year and champion older

male; and Ginger Punch, 2007

champion older female. He has won

five Breeders= Cup races, including

the Classic twice with Awesome

Again and Ghostzapper. Stronach

also won the 2002 GI Preakness S.

with Red Bullet.

Adena Springs was also the

leading money-earning breeder in North America for 11

consecutive years (2003-2013), and was second in 2016.

Stronach was the leading North American owner in earnings in

2000, 2002 and 2007.

Stronach expanded his participation in the industry toracetrack ownership with the 1998 acquisition of Santa Anita. He acquired Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields thefollowing year and, in 2002, he added the Maryland Jockey Clubtracks of Laurel Park and Pimlico, as well as Lone Star Park. Through a reorganization in 2007, the tracks are now owned

under the name of The StronachGroup, with Frank Stronach as itsfounder and chairman. His daughter,Belinda, now serves as chairman andpresident of the company. One of Stronach=s most recenttrailblazing innovations is the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational.Worth $12 million for its inauguralrunning a year ago, starting berths inthe world=s richest race were sold for$1 million apiece to individualownership groups. The secondPegasus World Cup, which will be heldJan. 27, will now carry a record $16-million purse.

AYou=ve got to be innovative,@ Stronach said a few years ago.AIf you want to be number one, you need to make a biginvestment to attract people. You know, a turtle only makesprogress if he sticks his neck out a little.@ Cont. p4

Stronach created the Adena Springs Retirement program in

2004, with locations in Florida and in Canada and he also

created aftercare and retirement programs at his racetracks.

These endeavors earned him the inaugural Earle I. Mack

Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Champion Award,

honoring outstanding efforts and influence on Thoroughbred

welfare, safety and retirement.

AFrank Stronach has had an undeniable impact on the

Thoroughbred industry, accentuated by his tremendous

commitment to excellence in so many facets of our sport,@ Alex

Waldrop, NTRA President and CEO said. AThrough his

indomitable will, spirit and bold business ventures, Frank has

built a tower of tremendous accomplishments with The

Stronach Group, Adena Springs and now the world=s richest

horse race, the Pegasus World Cup. We salute him as a most

deserving Award of Merit recipient.@

The 47th Annual Eclipse Awards dinner and ceremony will be

held Jan. 25 in the Sport of Kings Theatre at Gulfstream Park.

New NYTHA President Targets Workmen=s

Comp, Adding New Owners (cont. from p1)

Appelbaum wanted to be part of the solution and understands

that perhaps nothing is more important for New York horsemen

than getting the workmen=s compensation situation under

control. The system is complex and it requires payments from

both owners and trainers to cover jockeys and backstretch help,

but there=s no doubt that because of what are likely the highest

workmen=s comp rates in the sport, there are people staying

away.

"There's no question people have second thoughts about

racing in New York because of the huge costs,@ Violette told the

Blood-Horse when still in office.

Appelbaum has already helped broker a deal with NYRA

whereby during the current winter meet, any owner and trainer

who has a horse finish fourth through last will receive a $300

credit toward the amount they must pay into various workmen=s

compensation pools. It=s both an incentive for people to race in

the winter in New York and a way to ease the burden on

horsemen.

ANYTHA and NYRA got together as a way to help incentivize

owners and trainers to race during the winter and both

organizations know how burdensome the workmen=s comp

situation is,@ Appelbaum said. AWhen people are racing for

slightly smaller purses in the winter, this is a small way we can

help keep guys in the game and get them through the winter

when we hit them with the workmen=s comp costs, which

usually come in January.@ Cont. p5

Joe Appelbaum | ThoroStride

But Appelbaum knows that more needs to be done to bringdown the costs and that, he said, is his number one mission. AWe think we have made some good progress by switching toa private insurer this year. We=re bringing down the premium alittle bit. It=s the first step of many,@ he said. AOne of the thingswe want to do as an organization is to lower the barriers toentry to competing in New York, and workmen=s compensationis a great example of this. And this is just one barrier. We wouldlike to make New York a morefavorable place to do business asa horse owner so we can do morebusiness here and trainers canhave more horses to work with--and NYRA can have more horsesto card races with.@ Though he said he understandsthat costs are high, he also notedthat some have lost sight of thebenefits of racing in New York. You may be paying more inoverhead to compete there, butyou=re also competing for hugepurses and the competition levelis not that tough in the winteronce some of the bigger stableshead to Florida. AClearly there are costs to doing business in New York, however there is not a state that rewards owners and trainerslike New York does,@ Appelbaum said. Al=m not just talking aboutSaratoga. Look at the purse structure at Aqueduct compared tothe purse structure in states with more favorable climates thistime of year and what it takes to win those races, what kind ofspeed figure you need to win, what kind of horse you need towin a race.@ Every track needs more horses than it has and NYRA is noexception. Appelbaum said he realizes that=s not just because ofworkmen=s comp issues. Instead, he believes that what he callsthe Amiddle class@ owners have been chased from the sport, andit is imperative that they be brought back.

AOne thing I=d really like to work on is recruiting more owners

to come to New York,@ he said. AIf you followed either the

auction markets or, quite frankly, the owner=s standings over

the last decade, what we=ve seen is a flight of the middle class

owners. Horses now can sell for any amount of money or they

tend to sell for nothing at all. Those small partnerships that were

buying horses in the $50,000 to $150,000 range, which can get

you a horse that can compete in New York, they have fled. The

bread-and-butter owners fled

after the last recession and

we=ve had a real problem

getting them back. That hurts

for a number of reasons

because if you have those guys,

a trainer that might have 20

horses would [instead] have

30. That=s a big difference.@

Appelbaum would like to see

NYTHA and NYRA work

together to recruit more

owners that fall into the

economic level he discusses.

AIt=s just old fashioned

marketing,@ he said. AShow

them the beauty of the game

and how much fun ownership can be.@

Appelbaum touched on a handful of other topics.

On winter racing, he believes a good balance has been struck

and would not want to see NYRA cut any more dates.

AWe have lost about 18 winter dates over the last three or four

years, so the pruning has been done,@ he said. AWe are in a spot

where any more cuts would make it difficult. Winter racing has

benefits seen throughout the year. Its interlocked very tightly

with the New York-bred program, which is important to our

racing eco system throughout the state.@

Winter racing at Aqueduct | A. Coglianese

On the possible consolidation of the two downstate tracks, he

says he has confidence that NYRA will come up with an effective

plan for all involved. As head of the horsemen=s group, he says a

main priority is that whatever

happens does not effect the

number of racing days.

AWe=re not naive and we

understand the current political

situation,@ he said. AFor us, what=s

important is that we maintain

opportunities to race in New York

for as many horsemen as we can.

We=re hopeful that the facilities

reflect that. It=s not my place to

comment on the specifics of the

facilities. What=s important to us is

we maintain the opportunities to

race and maintain the quality of the

racing facilities.@

He says a personal pet peeve is

how people in racing seem to be stuck in the past, longing for

the Agood old days.@

AI think it=s really important for horsemen, racetrack owners,

everyone in our game, to understand we have to modernize our

thinking,@ Appelbaum said. ABy that, I mean there are a lot of

people who pine for this idyllic time in racing. I=m not exactly

sure when they=re talking about, maybe the mid-seventies. I

started going to the track in >84.

Even then, everyone was

complaining. It is important for us

to have a modern approach and

to evaluate where we are today in

2018 and what we can do with

technology, modern management

techniques, all the things we=ve

learned in business over the last

30 years and apply that to the

sport we love instead of

complaining there was a better

time. It might have been better, it

might not have. Who knows? It

doesn=t really matter. We are

here today and we need to start

thinking about what the next 30

years of horse racing should look like as opposed to what it used

to look like.@ (Click to return to p1)

Dave Johnson | Horsephotos

At New Year=s time, we thought it appropriate to ask our racing

community for their resolutions. Each participant was asked for

one racing-related resolution, and one non-racing one.

Up today: Dave Johnson.

Dave Johnson, racecaller, host, Sirius/XM Radio=s Down the Stretch

2018 Professional Resolution:

My first affection for Thoroughbred racing was through the

eyes of my parents and grandparents. We loved the game at

Fairmount Park, across the river from St. Louis. My family was

not involved in racing, these were just outings that brought me

to see the beauty of the sport, the excitement and the animal,

while enjoying the company of my loved ones of all ages. Then I

got a job in racing. Then writing, broadcasting and gambling

became my main focus. Last year I had such fun writing for the

TDN about the people, the horses and the stories surrounding

the Royal Ascot meet that I want to get back and share the

heartbeat of this daily spectacle with as many as I can, in person,

in print and in my broadcasts on Sirius XM radio.

That is my New Year's resolution, which I hope to fulfill.

2018 Personal Resolution:

My pet peeve last year was how tracks trash their patrons (and

hurt their bottom line) by running a race at the exact same time

as another major track, sometimes at a venue owned by the

same corporation! I resolve not to gamble on any race carded,

scheduled or run at the same time as another race at a major

track. If all horseplayers would do that, a light bulb might go on

in the offices of those tracks guilty of this stupidity and

malfeasance.

Long Island Sound to Pleasant Acres Stallions:

Irish group winner and U.S. Grade I placed Long Island Sound

(War Front--Treasure Trail, by Pulpit) will take up stud duties at

Joe and Helen Barbazon=s Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston

in 2018. Racing for Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor

and Joseph Allen, LLC, the 5-year-old stallion won the 2016

G3 Diamond S. and was second in the GI Secretariat S. for

trainer Aidan O=Brien. On the board in six of 10 starts, he won

four times and earned $149,981.

ALong Island Sound was absolutely brilliant winning his first

three starts,@ said Pleasant Acres= director of bloodstock

Michelle Hemingway. AHe is from the direct family of the

peerless Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}), who won 19 consecutive

races in her 20-race career. We believe he will be very attractive

to breeders in Florida.@

Long Island Sound, an $800,000 Keeneland November

weanling in 2013, is out of a half-sister to champion Zenyatta, as

well as to multiple Grade I winner Balance (Thunder Gulch).

Long Island Sound is property of a syndicate and will stand for

$5,000.
