IST Recess Report Name: ________________________________ Date: ________________________ Homeroom Teacher’s Name: ________________________________________________ Social Interaction: Active/Inactive (Circle One - explain if necessary) Type of Play: Comments:
IST PROCESS IST is a problem solving forum that allows us to look at the whole child from different points of view. The complexity of learning sometimes leaves us at a loss as to how to help a child be successful. This is not uncommon. Fortunately, we have an outstanding faculty with many years of experience and areas of expertise. If in doubt about going to IST, please speak with Robin or John. HOW TO GET A IST STARTED: Academic or Behavioral: Complete your grade-level IST paperwork on-line and email to Roseann and Terry. Roseann will send an email to all those who will be involved. ISTs take place on Thursday afternoons. You will be assigned a time and coverage will be provided. PRIOR TO THE MEETING:
Contact the parents by phone FIRST and then send home the IST parent letter. They will receive the summary notes from the meeting. Parents should never be caught off-guard about how their child is progressing – especially if they are struggling.
Be prepared and bring to the IST:
1. Student work 2. Comparative student/class samples 3. Student’s attendance record 4. Any anecdotal records regarding your concerns
Regularly attending the IST meetings will be:
Robin Young and/or John Conroy Pam Sieker -Psychologist Ruth Mueller – Social Worker Sue Chamberlain or Sheila Moroney – Speech and Language Therapists Classroom teacher and/or person referring A grade-level special education teacher Any other appropriate invited staff
May attend when appropriate: Donna Schneider or Francis Lang – Math Specialists The reading specialist working with your students Lisa Goeddel – Occupational Therapist Sue Fox – Physical Therapist
All specialists {PE, Music, Art, and Library} provide written feedback for the meeting. Please alert each of the child you are bringing to IST when you bring your class to that special.

Instructional Support Team (IST)
It’s a Good Thing What is an Instructional Support Team? A natural part of life is the occurrence of challenges, this hold true for children and for adults. When our students are challenged academically, socially and/or emotionally, our faculty join together to support a student in any manner within our means. The IST is an informal brainstorming meeting to meet the needs of your child as effectively as possible. Who is there? On behalf of your child, an IST was organized to include a variety of professionals in the building in order to look at the whole child from various views. The team usually consists of:
*Robin Young (J.F.K. Principal) *John Conroy (J.F.K. Assistant Principal) *Pam Sieker (J.F.K. Psychologist) *Ruth Mueller (J.F.K. Social Worker) *Your Child’s Classroom Teacher *Special Education Teacher *Sue Chamberlain or Sheila Moroney (J.F.K. Speech Therapists)
The following members may participate when appropriate:
*Reading Specialist *Math Specialist *Occupational Therapist *Physical Therapist *English as Second Language (ESL) Teacher
When a specialist is not able to attend, but may have valuable information about your child, he/she submits a written report explaining how your child is functioning academically, socially, and emotionally. Is My Child the Only One? Absolutely not! We average well over 100 ISTs per school year. How will I know what happened? Your child’s teacher will share concerns with you before the IST and share information after the IST. You will also receive a copy of summary notes from the meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to problem-solve and support your child’s success as a student and community citizen. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher or the appropriate member of the team. Sincerely, Robin Young Ed.D.
