The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the first edition in April of 2011 with the help of the city and the Beaverton Farmers Market. That first issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to first visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

With our unique layout, colorful design and community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "what's happening this month in Beaverton" but they also agree with our philosophy of "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local". As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high traffic locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll find that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

A Beaverton middle school stu-dent with a passion for music is being recognized as one of the

state’s top youth volunteers.Every summer, Cody Grater helps mu-

sic teacher Clare Borquein clean and or-ganize her classroom. He started when he was a fourth-grader at Bonnie Slope Elementary School.

Four years later, as a student at Meadow Park Middle School, he continues to give back.

“She’s the one who got me interested into music and that’s a big part of my life right now,” Grater said.

Last year, budget cuts forced Borquein to move to a new school, and Grater helped paint the dingy walls of her room a bright cheerful color for its incoming students.

The best part about helping his teach-er, Grater said, was “imagining the kids

of school and see their dusty music room transformed to a place where they can smile and grow.”

space turned out. It kind of reminds me of my old elementary school,” he said.

Grater has also helped collect cloth-ing for orphans during the holidays, and worked with an elementary school chess

club for one hour a week during the schoolyear.

“Cody is a great example of a leader, a volunteer; somebody who’s thinking not ‘what can I get out of this or is it go-

ing to be fun for me’ but ‘will it make me feel good if I give?’ He’s trying to make a difference,” Borquein said.

As part of the Prudential Spirit of Com-munity Award, Cody gets $1,000, a silver medallion and a trip to Washington, D.C., this May. He’s one of 102 state honorees who earned a spot in the awards contest.

out if he’s one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers.

The winners receive an additional $5,000, plus a $5,000 grant for a chari-table organization of their choice.

The same awards program also dis-tributes President’s Volunteer Services Awards to local honorees on behalf of President Barack Obama.

Cody Grater has been pitching in to help his former music teacher for years. And now he’s getting an all-expens-es paid trip to Washington D.C. as a reward for his volunteer work.

A new Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District trail

connecting Jackie Husen Park and the Jordan Woods Natural Area (formerly Jordan Park) near Cedar Mill is now open to the public. The new Jordan Trail is eight feet wide and made of asphalt to ensure ADA accessibility. It replaces unpaved and unmaintained trails. By design, the trail protects signi cant trees and limits encroachment into sensitive creek and wetland areas, which in turn bene ts wildlife. In addition to the quarter-mile community trail, THPRD created an overlook, two pedestrian bridges, a boardwalk, three trail access points, and secondary soft-surface trails as part of the project, which took nearly one year to build.

“Our goal was to create a neighborhood recreation area that complements the natural resources in the area,” explained Hal Bergsma, THPRD director of Planning. “We wanted a community trail that is compatible with the natural resources, links people to those resources, and is accessible for everyone. We believe we have succeeded on all those points. This is a beautiful addition to the trails system in the Cedar Mill area.”The trail starts at Jackie Husen Park (10955 NW Reeves Street, which includes a parking area) and heads north to an overlook that allows users a view of Cedar Mill Creek and the 22-acre Jordan Woods Natural Area. The natural area consists of steep, wooded slopes with native bigleaf maples, red cedar and alders. Cedar Mill Creek and Kitchen Creek wind through the lowest elevations and are accompanied by wetlands in some areas.Improvements also include a soft-surface trail that follows a pathway downslope, across Cedar Mill Creek,

and back upslope to another trailhead at Lost Park Drive. Pedestrian bridges and a boardwalk minimize user impacts on the sensitive surroundings. The project was funded by THPRD’s 2008 voter-approved bond measure. Construction started in the spring of 2012. Contractors removed

temporary safety barriers and opened the trail to the public on March 8.

Family members try out THPRD’s new quarter-mile, ADA-accessible trail that extends between Jackie Husen Park and the Jordan Woods Natural Area (formerly Jordan Park). The trail was opened to the public on March 8.

Los Gallos Rumba April 6, 7:30pm

Los Gallos hails from Portland and brings with them the sounds of

flamenco music with its rich gypsy and Arabic roots. Their sets are in-fused with romantic Spanish guitar and cover everything Latin from rumba to boleros. Lead singer of the group, Mercedes Estevez, gets eve-ryone fired up with her graceful fla-menco inspired movements. Guitar-ist/vocalist David Brackett has been enamored with Spanish music since he can remember and originally had the vision to form Los Gallos.

2 Thumbs Up for HART!

I recently had the pleasure of attending HART's previous production in March entitled, How the Other Half Loves. I had never heard of this production so didn't know what to expect. But from the opening scene with Danielle Valentine's character Fiona Foster interacting with her onstage husband Frank (played by Michael Henry Rouches), I became thoroughly enthralled and completely entertained. The talent level of the HART actors is not at all what one would ex-pect from a community theater. I must say that the 20 minute drive to downtown Hillsboro is nothing compared to the great 'Date Night' value you'll receive by seeing a show at HART.

Being a master gardener has influenced my love for the

natural environment and given me a fondness for floral and natural landscapes. In 2002, I started working in pastels be-cause it allowed me to work in vibrant colors. Pastels have added endless tone and value to my work because of my love of nature. For me, it's such a pure and instant medium with pure gratification.

1 TBSP Red Wine

1 TBSP Dijon Mustard

1 tsp Garlic Powder

Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions:Slice onions in rings and break apart (you can slice rings in ½ which is what I did). Sauté onions in butter until caramelized (approx.. 10 minutes). Add salt and pepper. Add Balsamic vinegar, red wine, and mustard and simmer on low for 5 minutes. Serve hot or cold on the hot dogs. Enjoy!

A: No lane changes can take place in the middle of an intersection.

A: Each jurisdiction have their own set of rules. In Portland it is not only possible but required to get a permit when such temporary parking is needed. In Beaverton it would be illegal under most circumstances to “double-park” within the public right of way. The reality of the situation is that we know this type of observed parking takes place and rarely is enforcement action taken unless the disrup-tion is substantial and unavoidable. Common sense is the key here.

ORS 811.395, 400 and 405 deal with definition of and use of signaling devices whether it be hands or mechanical. It is not an issue of etiquette, it’s the law.

There are a multitude of factors that are taken into con-sideration. How the street is classified whether it is a resi-dential street, collector or arterial. The geography of the street such as grade, curves, width, number of businesses or driveways. A speed study may be done if needed and if it is a county road or state Highway, they will have some say. Hall Blvd. is a good example in that it is 40 mph in some areas and 20 in others.

A: No, you cannot “hold” your handheld mobile com-munication device to use any of its features (ie. your GPS mapping system) while driving your car, including when you are stopped at a red light. Holding the phone while using the speaker phone is also a violation (ORS811.507).
