You have probably saw a tall blonde haired teacher walking down the halls; well if you did you probably saw Mrs. Patton an awesome fifth

grade teacher at Brick Mill!

This amazing teacher went to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. In college Mrs. Patton wanted to become a teacher but if she

could have a job other than being a teacher it would be being a children’s book author.

Mrs. Patton is also a very athletic person because when she was younger she used to play field hockey and ran on her track team. Mrs.

Patton also has lots of favorite sports teams including the Philadelphia, Eagles; the Phillies and the Philadelphia Wings lacrosse team.

Along with playing all her favorite sports the fabulous Mrs. Patton also has time to enjoy some of her favorite hobbies which are reading,

snowboarding, skiing, and one of most of your favorite hobbies, playing video games!

As much as Mrs. Patton loves to enjoy her favorite hobbies she also LOVES teaching! She loves teaching so much that she has taught

April Fool’s Day

Page 2 Brick Mill Gazette

April Fools Day is known to many of you as a day to fool around and play pranks on your friends

and family but the history behind all the pranking and tricking is amazing.

April Fools Day began in 1582 in France and started to cumulate around April 1st. Back then New Year was cele-

brated on April 1st but then the New Years date changed. People didn’t like the new date that New Years Day was

changed to so they kept celebrating New Years Eve on April 1st. People who kept celebrating New Years Day on

April 1rst were referred to as “Fools”. People taunted those who had New Years day mixed up and usually sent them

off on “Fool” errands and made them the center of other practical jokes while a tradition called April Fools came to be.

April Fools Day soon evolved and spread to England and the American Colonies and perhaps later considered itself

an international holiday filled with laughter and plots of revenge. April Fools day is celebrated differently all over the

world like in Scotland where April Fools Day is celebrated for two days and the second day is used for pranks that

relate to the posterior region of the body. The popular prank of the “kick me” sign is the type of pranks Scotland plays

on the second day of April Fool’s. Mexico’s interpretation of April Fools Day is also different from ours. Mexico cele-

brates April Fool’s Day on December 28. It was a sad remembrance of what King Herod did to innocent children but it

soon evolved into a day of fun and pranks.

There are a lot of different pranks played on April Fool’s day that go from the simplest things that are just saying your

shoe’s untied or major pranks like setting someone’s alarm clock back an hour so they wake up earlier.

April Fool’s Day is a holiday celebrated and enjoyed by many people but beware you may be the next “April Fool”!

Saint Patrick's Day is a religious holiday celebrated on March 17th. It is named after Saint Patrick, who is mostly known in

Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day became an official holiday in the 17th century. The actual Saint Patrick was born in Roman

Britain in the 4th century, his family was very wealthy. His father and grandfather were deacons in the Church. When he

was sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders. According to him, he was told by God in a dream to go to the coast, where

he would board a ship and return to Britain. Once he was there he studied to be a priest.

Eventually he died, due to it, March 17th officially became a day of celebration known as St. Patrick’s Day. It was a reli-

gious holiday celebrated for St. Patrick’s miracles and what he did such as stopping a snake invasion in Ireland by praying.

Now what do you always see on March 17th? Leprechauns of course! The question is, are Leprechauns real?

What does the word “leprechaun” mean? It is said that the word Leprechaun came from “luchorpan” which means a person

who is short or smaller than others. It’s also said that the word Leprechauns come from the words “leath brogan”, which

means shoemaker.

A leprechaun is a type of fairy, which they say is usually an old small man, wearing green. The Leprechauns spend all their

time making shoes, and hiding all their coins in a black pot at the end of the rainbow. It is said if a leprechaun is captured

by someone; the Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes and then be released, like a genie.

Leprechauns are also musicians who play whistles, the fiddle and the Irish Harp. They are known to have music sessions at

night which in Ireland are known as Ceili’s.

I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t seem real to me. Really no one has even seen them before. So they really have no

proof that they are real. To you this is the question: Are leprechauns real?

The Green shamrock and the pot of gold, you know, its Saint

Patrick’s Day

David Lubar stops at BME

By: Timothy Mulderrig

As most of you know, on February 11th David Lubar paid a visit to our school. Mr. Lubar was going around our school district talking to middle and elementary students. He gave an assembly at all the schools about how he writes and some different tips to making interesting and funny stories.

David Lubar isn’t any ordinary author. During our assembly Lubar said that he doesn’t do sweet, nice stories. Instead he said that he does twisted stories. That is very obvious if you have read any of his books. David Lubar also had the people in the audience write the beginnings of some funny stories too. We wrote titles, hooks, and what if questions. This is how he says he starts stories. He just puts down whatever comes to his mind and creates some awesome stories!

David Lubar has written 16 books. He said that he wrote his first book at 22 and was 55 when he finished his most recent book. He is 56 now. So many people like his books that Lubar says that they treat him like a rock star. He finds it so cool that people are treating him this way. David says his favorite book to write was My Rotten Life. He prefers writing short stories (like the Weenie series) more than novels.

The job as a writer wasn’t always Lubar’s first choice. He said he wanted to be many things like a chemist and an artist. But his dream at being an artist wasn’t that good. During the assembly he showed us some of his drawings or comics. He said they were terrible. So it is probably better that he is an author. He went to Rutgers University in NJ where he majored in philosophy. But at one point he did have other jobs: he was a video game designer and Creative Computing magazine’s editor.

He ended up becoming an author because of his big mouth. During the assembly he shared the story of when he was young boy. David would always talk too much and would end up getting in trouble. Then he would be sent to the library and get in trouble there too. So the librarian would make him read instead of talk. He would keep reading and writing his ideas instead of saying them. So he stayed out of trouble and started becoming a talented author.

So here is the news you really want to know. During my interview with him, he says that he is writing a whole new series. It is called Accidental Monsters. We are the first people to find this out! He is also writing a new book called Attack of the Vampire Weenies that’s coming out May 24. I bet you know what you want for a gift now!

Have you ever heard of the speed stack competition? If you haven’t well some of the students from Brick Mill attended

the Speed Stack competition in Laurel Delaware. The manager of the Brick Mill speed stack team is our P.E. teacher Mrs.

Sumner. Some students I interviewed were Jaylynn Johnson, Timothy Mulderrig, Justin Greene, and our manager Mrs.

Sumner.

Mrs. Sumner saw the speed stack idea at a conference and thought it looked fun. Then she decided to teach it in class and

she had some kids that were really good. She has been a manager for speed stacking for the past five years. She really

enjoys going to the competitions but she says that sometimes they can be really long! Mrs. Sumner says that she is done

going to competitions for this year but will continue next year.

Next I’m going to talk about my little sister Jaylynn Johnson, this was her first year going to the competition. She did

really amazing she won three medals in all the races that she was in. She also won a ribbon for fourth place on the relay

team she was on with some third graders, and a second grader. Jaylynn really enjoyed her first year in speed stacking and

is looking forward to next year.

But my friends Justin Greene and Timothy Mulderrig have been doing this for years. Justin has been doing it for six years,

and has won 20 medals and 1 trophy in all his years. And Timothy has been doing it for four years and has won 12 med-

als one ribbon and won a trophy. Both of them really enjoy speed stacking and can’t wait until next year. Hopefully next

year we’ll have even more kids that can join the competition and bring home even more victories for Brick Mill! Thanks

Mrs. Sumner!

“Let’s go Blue Hens! Let’s go! Let’s go Blue Hens! Let’s go!” You might have heard this chant at a UD game. UD stands for University of Delaware, which is a college in Newark, Delaware.

In 1743 the college was founded. It is one of the oldest higher-education colleges in the U.S. This college now is doing very well. It offers courses of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Ocean and Environment, Education and Human Developing, Engineering, and Health Science.

Have you seen some teachers coming to our school and helping out? Those are students from the University of Delaware. They are in the student teacher program. For 8 weeks, novice teachers come to elementary schools and apply their knowledge from all their education courses. It lasts one semester long and it is designed to train novice teachers for a future teaching job.

School Breakfast Week

By: Sedona Walker

The National School Breakfast program was made in 1966. It was made to help the “nutritionally needy” chil-dren. The program was also developed to help children that live in poor areas, or where they have to drive a long way.

People should eat school breakfast when they don’t have breakfast at home on a daily basis. This is because you need breakfast to get you started for the day. The food helps your brain think and gives you energy for things like gym and playing at recess. Without breakfast we could get lower grades and feel less energetic.

To help promote school breakfast, our school and many other schools have school breakfast week. If you can, try carpooling with one of your friends and come to breakfast at school.

These are our results for the National School Breakfast week, let’s hope we keep these numbers up all year long!

On Monday we had 121 people eat, Tuesday was 154, Wednesday was 187 and on Thursday there were 283 people eating breakfast in the cafeteria.

Arizona-training teams will play other Arizona teams in the Cactus League, named for the plant that dominates the dry, arid region. The teams can play colleges, minor league baseball clubs, intra-squad games (members of the same team play against each other), split-squad games (games when one team is scheduled for two games in one day, so the team splits into two squads and each squad plays in one of the games), and B Games (unofficial Spring Training games where statistics and standings are not counted). In years when there is the World Baseball Classic, an interna-tional tournament where teams are decided by the play-ers nationality, the national teams in the tournament prepare by playing major league teams.

By: Sammi Spence

In Major League Baseball, spring training is a series of practices and exhibi-tion games preceding the start of the regular season. Spring training allows new players to try out for roster and position spots, and gives existing team players practice time prior to competitive play. Spring train-ing has always attracted fan attention, drawing crowds who travel to the warmer climates to enjoy the weather and watch their favorite teams play, and spring train-ing usually coincides with spring break for many college students.

Spring training typically lasts about six weeks, starting in mid February and running until just before the season opening day , tradi-tionally the first week of April. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training first because pitchers benefit from a longer training period due to the exhaustive nature of the position. A week or two later, the position players arrive and team practice be-gins. Team members nor-mally wear their batting prac-tice uniforms for the duration of spring training and only wear their normal jerseys on Opening Day.

Spring training by major league teams in loca-tions other than their regular season “homes” began in the 1920s. They include the St. Louis Cardinals in Hot Springs, Arkansas; the New York Yankees in New Or-leans, Louisiana; the Chicago Cubs in Los Angeles, Califor-nia; and the Pittsburgh Pi-rates in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Other teams joined in by the early 1940s. The Detroit Ti-gers are credited with being the first team to conduct spring training camp in Ari-zona.

While Florida and Arizona now host all Major League Baseball teams for spring training, this has not always been the case. The Brooklyn Dodg-ers trained in Havana, Cuba in 1947 and 1949, and in the Dominican Republic in 1948. The New York Yankees also trained in the early 1950s in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Also spring training camps and games were held in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and some cities in north-ern Mexico, sometimes by visiting major league teams in the 1950s and 1960s.

During World War II, most teams held an abbre-viated spring training within easy reach of their cities. In order to conserve rail trans-port during the war, 1943 Spring Training was limited to an area east of the Mississippi River and north of the Ohio River. The Chicago White Sox held camp in French Lick, Indi-ana; the Washington Sena-tors in College Park, Mary-land; and the New York Yan-kees in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

In modern training, teams that train in Florida will play other Florida-training teams in their exhibi-tion games. This is called the Grapefruit League, so named because of Florida’s enor-mous citrus output. Likewise,

Spring is Baseball Season

Ireland

By: Elizabeth Parker

Eggs, bacon, bread pudding umm sounds so good! These are some of the foods Miss Moran ate in Ireland!! But wait there’s more seafood; pork, lamb, and chicken are also very popular in Ireland.

Miss Moran went to Ireland in July of 2003. She went with her parents, sister, and grandmother for an im-portant event. Her cousins wedding! She said they stayed in bed and breakfast’s mostly. Also, that most people live in little tiny homes almost like a cottage.

She went to Cavan, Dublin, Galway, and Dingle. But her two favorite were Killarney and the Cliffs of Mohr. She liked Killarney because of the lakes and the Cliffs because of the view! Throughout Ireland they speak mostly English with a brogue or accent but some speak Gaelic.

Two important things you have to see are if you go to Ireland are the Cliffs of Mohr and the Blarney Castle! The currency used in Ireland is the pound. They love soccer! Their clothing is the same as ours. Good thing so we wouldn’t stick out!! Also in Ireland they love soccer. Sounds like a good time !!

Internet Safety Contest

By Timothy Mulderrig

Internet safety….. This is such an important topic that our school decided to participate in the internet safety poster contest. It showed us how to be safe online.

During technology class with Mrs. Camp we were drawing posters a while ago. The finalists for our school are 5th grade Justin Dossantos, Emani Enwerem, Lillian Appiah. 4th grades finalists are Jaden McGeach, Cameron Peters, and Skyler Bluemke. These people represented internet safety the best in their poster. The topics we could have chosen were cyber bullying, hard passwords, safe websites, and not giving out personal info. Skyler won the state’s 4th grade first place winner. Way to go Sklyer!

If we aren’t safe on the internet that can really affect our life. Whatever we post online is permanent. Everyone in the online world can see it. That is why Mrs. Camp decided to teach it to us. She thinks that the most important aspect of it is that the internet is public and we need to use it responsibly.

So next time your online make sure you watch what you say. Remember everything online is public.
