Last month’s meeting was very informative and fun filled. Dr. Papa and Dr. Mangla provided us with information on many ways to combat medical and aging problems. It was very interesting and I’m sure helpful for many of us. On Wednesday, February 20th thirty of us went to the Frankie Valli Tribute at the Sandhill Crane Restaurant in the Sandhill Crane Golf Club. The show was fantastic and brought back many memories of our younger days. The food was plentiful and delicious. I’m sure we will be going back for their all you can eat Prime Rib buffet. They also have different tribute shows on Wednesday nites, March 20th will be a “Platters Tribute”. Our St. Joseph Dinner Celebration was a huge success as usual. We had one hundred twenty guests who enjoyed their dinner, thanks to Joseph’s Classic Market and the great music and singing by “Sound Relations”. This particular event is always a great success for our lodge because of many members who help and give of themselves in various ways, all to make this event a sensation. I would like to mention everyone, but since that is impossible I will just give an overall “Thank You” to all with a special mention to the chair person, Sister Marguerite DeGaetano who does a great job every year. On Sunday, April 7th we will again have a “Pot Luck Picnic”. Hot dogs, hamburgers, Italian sausage, dessert, soda, water and coffee will be provided by the lodge. All the side dishes will be provided by the great cooks of our lodge. As you know, St. Joseph and the picnic events are the two main fundraisers for our scholarships in June. SUNDAY, APRIL 7th PICNIC “POT LUCK STYLE” We have again decided to have another pot luck picnic since it was received so well by our members. Our lodge has had many pot luck dinner meetings and everyone enjoys them so why not a pot luck picnic. It’s a large family get together where everyone brings their favorite dish to show off. The lodge is providing beef hot dogs, hamburgers and Italian sausage, soda, coffee, water, dessert plus music by Michael Angelo Prisco. Hopefully you will recall, Michael came to our last picnic and sang all his wonderful songs for us. So this time he is featured to present them again, but solo. The ticket price is $22.00 p.p. and our picnic will be held as always in the Sea Oats Pavilion, Carlin Park, Jupiter from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Beer and wine are available for a donation. We shouldn’t forget that this is still one of the events we use as a fundraiser for our yearly scholarships. There is a large variety of foods, etc. to bring for 8 to 10 people. Appetizers, salads, fruit salad, peppers & onions for the sausage, vegetables or desserts. For those who don’t cook you can supply charcoal, starter fluid and ice, but please let us know what you will be bringing, so not to duplicate. The telephone committee will be calling to coordinate the food choices and to answer any questions.

The show was fantastic and brought back many

Page 2: Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America...April Fools’ Day or April Fool’s Day April Fools’ Day, sometimes called All Fools’ Day, is one of the most light-hearted days

April Fools’ Day or April Fool’s Day April Fools’ Day, sometimes called All Fools’ Day, is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar. All Fools’ Day is an annual (primarily) Western celebration commemorated on April 1 by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called

April fools. People playing April fool jokes often expose their prank by shouting “April fool(s)” at the unfortunate victim(s). Some newspapers, magazines and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in smaller letters. Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.Aside from April Fools’ Day, the custom of setting aside a day for the playing of harmless pranks upon one’s neighbor has historically been relatively common in the world. EASTER PROMISEEaster is a movable feast - and it all depends on the moon

EASTER is just around the corner and those yummy chocolate eggs have already started appearing in stores. But when exactly is the holiday in 2019? Unlike Christmas and Valentine’s Day, the date of Easter Sunday changes every year. When is Easter 2019?

Unlike Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day which all fall on fixed dates, Easter can fall anytime between March 22 and April 25. In 2019 it falls on Sunday, April 21.Good Friday is therefore April 19, and the Easter Monday bank holiday is on April 22. The date is decided by a complex set of calculations based on observations of the moon. In early Christianity, different churches used different methods, leading to disagreements which remain unresolved centuries later.Eastern and Western churches continue to celebrate Easter according to different calendars, although sometimes by chance the festivals coincide.

How is the date of Easter decided and why does it change each year?In Western Christianity, Easter Sunday must always follow the first full moon after the spring equinox. Easter celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus, which the Bible says happened around the Jewish festival Passover. Passover typically begins on the night of the first full moon after the spring equinox, except in “leap months” when it is the second full moon, as in 2016. Because the precise timing of observing the full moon can vary in each time zone, the Church instead calculates the date from ecclesiastical calendar. This divides 19 normal calendar years into 235 months of 30 and 29 days each, with the ecclesiastical full moon on the 14th day of each lunar month. The “paschal full moon” - from the Aramaic for Passover - is the one that falls on or after the spring equinox on March 21.Easter Day is the first Sunday after the paschal full moon - so if the full moon is on a Sunday, Easter will be a week later. Therefore the earliest Easter can be is March 22, and the latest is April 25. The

latest Easter in recent years was April 23 in the year 2000, and the earliest was March 23 in 2008. It will not fall in March again until 2024 when it is on March 31. In 1943 a full moon fell on March 20, just before the equinox, so the paschal full moon was the next one on April 18. This was a Sunday so Easter was seven days later on April 25. It will not be this late again until 2038.Christians in the East use the Julian calendar, 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar used in the West, so the full moon and equinox are calculated according to a different date. This means in 2019 the Eastern Church will celebrate Easter on April 28, a week after Western churches. Some years, such as in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2017, the two churches celebrated Easter on the same day. It will happen next in 2025. In other years the festivals may be up to five weeks apart, as happened in 2013 and 2016.

ITALY’S EASTER MONDAY……LA PASQUETTALa Pasquetta is a perfect time to go outdoors and enjoy a relaxing picnic. The solemn processions and joyful Easter celebrations are over and Italians have enjoyed the wonderful feast that follows Mass on Easter Sunday! Before they return to work and their normal daily activities, there is one more holiday to celebrate. In an effort to have the joy of the season last just a little bit longer, Italians also celebrate La Pasquetta, or Little Easter. This spring tradition has evolved into an Italian national holiday for the Monday following Easter. The day has religious significance as well, although it is not a holy day of obligation. Italian Catholics sometimes refer to it as Lunedi dell’ Angelo, the Monday of the Angel, when the women of the sepulcher, including Mary Magdalene, were comforted by an angel when returning to Jesus’ tomb and found it empty.Up until the 19th century, the entire week following Easter was set aside as a time to kick back and relax. At some point, the weeklong respite was reduced to only one day.Family and friends often head to the great outdoors – to beaches, parks and mountains to revel in the sunshine and fresh breezes of spring. A picnic is the order of the day, with leftovers (avanzi) from Easter dinner. Family chefs can relax while picnickers feast on hard boiled eggs, various meats and cheeses, pizza piena (stuffed pizza), torta di pasta (baked pasta), olives and other delicacies. While many prefer to dine alfresco, it has become increasingly popular to dine at a favorite restaurant. Whatever the choice, it’s a day to relax, take a stroll, play games, to celebrate spring. Taken from the Italian Tribune

in time for Christmas and throughout 2019. The calendars make great gifts. Give a calendar to the person who has

everything. The lucky number picked will be in effect for the whole year for only $50.00 and you can win as many times

as the lucky number is chosen. There are various amounts to win, $50.00 everyday and many special days (holidays) that are valued at $100, $200, $500 or even $1000. We have had many winners, even $1000

winners. You can’t win if you never buy the calendar! Be Lucky…

We would love to see that you are the next big winner!
