Brick StripBrookline,
Massachusetts
We were asked to paint this handsome 1897 Victorian home’s exterior, and to strip the old paint from its brick foundation. Removing thick layers of paint from brick is a laborious process, but one that delivers truly spectacular results.

The home’s brick foundation had been painted long ago. In our opinion, it was an unfortunate choice to hide the texture and rich variegated color of the original brickwork.

The painted brick, seen here along the driveway, appears lifeless, chunky, dull and mono-tone.

Notice the height of the foundation? Viewed from the garden and carriage house in back, the brick foundation was intended to be a prominent visual feature of the structure’s rear façade.

Stripping paint from a turn of the century foundation requires a mix of determination, elbow grease and TLC. Scraping, sanding or the use of harsh solvents can easily damage 100+ year old brick and mortar. Our crew tested several products to determine which would most effectively loosen all previously applied coatings without causing harm.
