Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Co l l e g e S c h o l a r s h i p R e c i p i e n t s 1

Nelson Mandela once stated that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Gifts to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving through a scholarship fund acknowledge the work of our

students and help them with the rising costs of education. Higher education is necessary for our students to

attain financial stability, save for retirement and allow our nation to compete in the global economy. Every

time one of our scholarship recipients earns a college degree, we improve the economy and reduce the costs

of crime, poverty and health care. Children who see their parents earn college degrees are more likely to earn

a degree themselves. Our communities thrive when the educational levels of the residents are increased. A

scholarship has a positive snowball effect—the benefits keep growing, long after the award is received.

On behalf of the scholarship recipients, thank you! Your generosity has shown them how much the people of

their community care and believe in them. The Hartford Foundation and donors to scholarship funds offer

these students an opportunity to change their lives. Together, this year, we will award more than $1.3 million

in scholarships to residents of our community attending two-year and four-year colleges and universities.

Your gift is changing our community, and also the world.

Hartford Foundation College Scholarship ProgramOur scholarship funds were created by people and organizations of all types

and from all across Greater Hartford. Although their situations vary greatly,

they all share one motivation—to help students afford a college education.

Because of these donors’ generosity, last year the Hartford Foundation

awarded more than $1.3 million in support of college scholarships to more

than 625 traditional-aged students and adult learners at four-year and two-

year colleges, as well as local community colleges. Most of the scholarships for

traditional-aged students are renewable, enabling students to receive

significant support for each of their years in college as long as they maintain a

good academic record. Moreover, these funds are endowed, which means that

the Foundation can continue to award scholarships to area students.

There are three ways to make a substantial impact on area students through theHartford Foundation:

1. You can create a named fund or contribute any amount to the HartfordFoundation’s General Scholarship Endowment Fund. Contributions are investedin our broadly diversified portfolio and the Fund makes four-year scholarshipawards—currently of $3,000 per year—for residents of Greater Hartford.

2. You can create a named fund or contribute any amount to the CommunityCollege Scholarship Endowment Fund. Contributions are invested in ourbroadly diversified portfolio and the Fund makes three-year escalating scholarshipawards. The awards are for graduating high school seniors attending a communitycollege in the fall after their graduation from high school and we also awardscholarships to non-traditional adult learners.

3. With a sizeable gift, you can create an Individual Scholarship Fund and namespecific selection criteria for your scholar. The Foundation can help you decidehow to participate in reviewing or nominating potential recipients. We will alsohandle scholarship distributions and renewal applications, and help youcommunicate with your scholar if you choose.

Generosity’s Ripple Effect

Hart ford Foundat ion for Pub l ic G iv ing C o l l e g e S c h o l a r s h i p R e c i p i e n t s 3

Generosity has played a significant role in shaping CarlyPeruccio’s adulthood. Throughout her four years at BatesCollege in Lewiston, Maine, Carly was on the receiving end ofincredible generosity, which she describes as a gift; it is a giftthat she has chosen to “pay forward” in a myriad of ways.

Carly, a graduate of Manchester High School, is a 2012Hartford Foundation scholarship recipient. The generosity of donors who contributed to her Hartford Foundationscholarship helped make Bates a financially feasible option for Carly and her family. Once on the college campus, sheencountered even more generosity—from professors andfriends who were eager to share their wisdom and talents withher. She also received generous grants from the college thathelped to enhance and enrich her classroom learning.

One of the most meaningful acts of generosity Carlyexperienced occurred in the summer after her freshman year, when she followed up on an announcement from a professorand received an opportunity to assist with classes forimmigrants at Lewiston’s Adult Learning Center. Helping withEnglish classes there became the highlight of her summer.

Because of this experience, Carly was inspired to co-foundExperience Exchange in her sophomore year. This was a pilotproject to promote relationships between Bates students andasylum-seeking members of the Lewiston community.Experience Exchange was designed to encourage cross-cultural understanding, and offered participants theopportunity to exchange English and French lessons, sharecultural dishes and engage in meaningful conversations.

Carly continued her work with the Adult Learning Centerand eventually began leading her own conversations groupsthere. After her second year at Bates, Carly received ascholarship to teach English as a second language at thecenter during her summer break. She taught immigrants,

asylum-seekers and refugees from more than ten countries, and her work there encouraged post-graduation plans.

During her time at Bates, Carly majored in anthropologyand minored in French and Francophone studies. As aparticipant in her college’s Migration and Transnational Identityprogram, she conducted an independent research projectstudying the role of female mountain guides in a male-dominated industry, and was awarded additional funding fromBates to perform enhanced research overseas. During thesummer of 2015, she spent nine weeks living in Marrakech andImlil, Morocco. Carly performed fieldwork involving participantobservation by hiking in Morocco’s High Atlas mountainranges, and conducted interviews with guides, professors andothers in the hiking industry. She was able to further developher French language skills, and her studies bothcomplemented and enriched her academic interests.

This past June—just four days after graduating fromBates College—Carly addressed the Hartford Foundation’s2016-17 scholarship awardees at the 12th annual ScholarshipRecipient Reception, held at the University of Saint Joseph inWest Hartford. She offered fresh reflections of a collegegraduate, speaking about the value of her Foundationscholarship and offering advice to the new recipients. Sheshared, “I’ve learned from my own time as a college studentthat one of the best ways to show thanks for that which youcannot fully repay is to be proud of your work, whatever formit takes.”

Carly has a lot to be proud of, and she credits Bates withhelping her transform into a more conscious citizen, studentand individual. This academic year, Carly will participate inprogramming at a refugee center and teach English torefugee students at a high school in Luxembourg City under a Fulbright fellowship.
