8 ISSUE #11 JAN / FEB 2013

Two years may seem like a long time. For me though it has flown by in the blink of an eye. It was actually over two years ago that whilst working for an international kitesurfing magazine as Assistant Editor here in Brighton, I came up with the idea to launch a free local health and fitness publication. After many sleepless hours planning, researching and eventually pitching the idea to local fitness establishments and personnel, it wasn't long before the first issue of Brighton Active was released in January 2011.

Fast forward to now and I'm very pleased to say that many of those same people who I remember sitting down for a coffee with and telling them my vision, have been a part of every single issue of the magazine since. Along the way there have been plenty of new faces that I have enjoyed working with as well, many of which have become true friends. It's been a fantastic journey and one where I must thank everyone I have worked with, as well as YOU - the readers of the magazine.

One of the most enjoyable parts of these last two years has been picking the brains of the people I have met in the health and fitness industry. With their help and recommendations I have discovered new fitness trends, attempted new and exciting workouts, become aware of just how far I can push myself

E D I T O R ’ S N O T EE D I T O R ’ S N O T Ephysically and mentally, and also have finally found what my body responds best to. This hasn't always been easy and like many others I struggled to fit my active lifestyle around my work, as well as keeping things consistent.

I used to be all too aware of when I considered myself to be 'on a roll' with things, and equally aware of when I was taking my foot off the gas. Somewhere along my journey though things changed and I didn't just see keeping active as something that I fitted around my life, I saw it as something that my life fitted around.

I now don't keep a track of how many times I've exercised a week, or think about what I'm going to be doing over the next few days. Now, to put things simply: “It is what it is.” Keeping active is now as familiar to me as brushing my teeth. It may have taken some time, some trials and errors, as well as plenty of patience, but eventually I've got here and am pleased to say that it was all worth it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Find what works for you! Use this copy of Brighton Active as your gateway into a world where the end reward is ultimate happiness and satisfaction. Take a moment and book yourself on to a local bootcamp, gym trial or Personal Training session. Why not bring a friend? Maybe try out a few different times in the day? Experiment! You might not find exactly what you are looking for straight away, but remember to be patient. It might take a week, a month, or like me two years! But once you find what you are looking for you'll never look back.

Healthy Regards,

Ash

ACTIVE NEWS FOR ACTIVE PEOPLEWARRIOR RUN 2013

Former British & European MMA Champion and Cage Rage Veteran Sol Gilbert (owner of ZT Fitness & Fight Skool in Hove) brings you the brand new SGUT (Sol Gilbert Ultimate Training) 30-Day Bootcamp app in the palm of your hand. Download the FREE SGUT App today and get all the information you need to really see the difference in your body. Using a unique scoring system this app will break your day down to an easy to use routine. If you want to make small, daily changes on the road to fitness and health, SGUT 30-day Boot Camp challenge is for you. This isn’t a weight loss program, although

you may lose weight during the next 30 days. In fact, you’ll have specific instructions not to weigh yourself throughout this entire process. The reason? The focus should be on the journey, not the destination. Each day you’ll start with 15 points in the SGUT Bank. Your challenges for the day will consist of body weight exercises and making sure you are eating correctly. The goal is to end up with a zero score as your head hits the pillow.

With so much of our time spent at work, it would make sense

that we should look to pursue careers that will make us happy - particularly with an ever-increasing number contemplating changing jobs. Central YMCA’s Darren O’Toole discusses why those with fitness fervour should pursue their passion.

MAKE YOUR MOVE

12 ISSUE #11 JAN / FEB 2013

I’ve always enjoyed keeping fit whether it was going to the gym or playing sport, so for me it was a natural choice to pursue a career in the fitness industry. Perhaps I should sheepishly admit that my initial goal of becoming a lawyer was left in tatters when I discovered the amount of work involved, although having subsequently trained law professionals, I’m somewhat relieved - seven-day working weeks are not for me! So this leads me to my confusion when

I hear people say that they hate their jobs. Somewhat smugly I listen knowing that I actually quite enjoy mine, but the more surveys I read, it seems that I’m in the minority.

Research carried out last year by Mercer found over half of Britain’s employees are unhappy at work, with over a third of them seriously considering leaving their jobs. More so, only 61% currently said their work gives them a feeling of personal accomplishment with just

55% feeling proud to work for their organisation. These statistics are quite depressing, particularly when you consider that most people will spend at least 60% of their waking hours at work or en route to it. So why don’t we all just stop, take a breath, quit our jobs and pursue our passion? It’s that easy.

Pursuit of happinessOK, strictly speaking things like mortgages, food and general cost of living prevent this from being such a simple step. However, figures suggest that many have now reached the stage where they are ready to take the plunge and make a change. Mercer’s research shows that 36% of workers are now seriously considering leaving their jobs, including 40% of those in the age group 25-34 and 36% of those aged 35-45. So what is the next step if you are unhappy in your work? Many pursue the same role in a different company to gain a few months respite before the inevitable previous issues resurface but a number are following the ‘life’s too

BtnActive#11_CS5_REPRO.indd 12 20/12/2012 15:41

Page 13: Brighton Active Issue 11

www.brightonactive.com 13

short’ mantra and turning to a career that they are passionate about.

Fitness is one such passion and an industry which is benefiting from a steady rise in people choosing to change careers. Far from being an ever revolving door of young whippersnappers or ageing lycra-clad throw backs, health and fitness facilities now have a wealth of instructors with experience from across the spectrum. The keen, recent school-leavers are as prevalent as the former city workers allowing for a fantastic offering to the customer. For trainers, one of the key factors in being successful is to be able to gain and retain clients. Whilst many visit a personal trainer to achieve the standard goals of losing weight, feeling fitter and getting stronger, a surprising number just want to complete some exercise intertwined with having some company. To retain clients who have specific fitness goals is very easy - you physically challenge them through effective and structured training programmes which are the very skillset of a trainer. However, retention of clients who hire a trainer for the social or, dare I say, status of having a personal trainer is a little trickier, but this is where the industry is benefiting from trainers with such a diverse background.

A broad rangeHealth and fitness facilities are no longer solely supervised by the intimidatingly muscle-bound specimens of yesteryear. Instead,

today gyms are manned by a mix of former office workers, manual labourers and healthcare professionals with diversity in both ages and genders. This allied with the obvious abundance of sporty youngsters and experience fitness professionals add to the eclectic mix that gyms now offer.

So why is this variety good? Well it is two-fold but each is equally important. Firstly, if gyms are manned by people just like you, both in terms of physicality and interests, then it becomes less intimidating and generally a more appealing place to go. A client once said that I ‘looked normal, as if I didn’t even go to the gym’, once I got over the initial reaction of feeling terribly insulted and my subsequent determination to provide him with the toughest of sessions, I understood that he felt happy that I wasn’t a heavy-set muscle-bound trainer as this wouldn’t have appealed to him. Developing rapport with clients is imperative to a

successful trainer. Even a client who is getting results from a trainer is unlikely to continue their relationship if they don’t enjoy their company. As a trainer, I understand that clients will sometimes be better placed with other trainers. For instance, a new mum is likely to form a greater bond with a female personal trainer with young children as they’ve experienced the same things and have immediate common ground. So if fitness facilities are becoming more welcoming to everyone, then this in turn should create a fitter and healthier nation which I’m sure everyone would agree is no bad thing.

Secondly, and returning to my initial point of pursuing a career which makes you happy, the diversity in the fitness industry offers an outlet for those with a passion for fitness and a desire to change careers. There is a market for anyone regardless of their background and knowledge. Unlike attempting to get into other sectors of work,

training can be completed whilst in employment or over a two to three month period if completed intensively. It is not the case of a return to university and significant debt. Therefore if the variety of the industry allows people to leave the job that makes them unhappy in order to pursue a career that will, then the variety is a wonderful thing.

Options for everyoneTrevor Clarke, YMCAfit Tutor sees the flexible learning options as an appeal for those considering a career in fitness, viewing: “The learning options and opportunities are vast now. For instance, at YMCAfit, we have eLearning options available for some of the theory aspects of the course for those who feel comfortable learning this way, or tutor-led teaching for those who prefer to learn in a classroom environment. The practical aspects are always face-to-face. For me this

is key. As a trainer, you can be in possession of the theoretical side with the aid of a book or a computer but teaching skills must to be honed and practiced. This is what makes our training so renowned and respected because students leave our courses having practiced their teaching skills on a variety of fellow students.”

The New Year should be the time when everyone stops planning and starts doing - the time to finally act upon that big decision. For those of you reading this who were not sure about joining your gym, hiring a trainer or even taking the ultimate

step and pursuing your passion with a career in fitness then make this your time to finally make your move.

According to several studies no more than 22% of those that set New Year resolutions actually succeed... Yes, that is a whopping 78% of people that fail.

Many of us make resolutions about getting fit, losing weight and becoming healthier. Vowing to improve your lifestyle is admirable, but lofty goals such as these are often easier said than done as most of us are left with absolutely no idea how we’ll manage to do it. Then by February we are back to our old habits, wallowing in self-pity and presumed failure and telling ourselves that once again it’s just not our year.

Making resolutions on a grand scale often leads to an all or nothing mentality that can be totally counterproductive. For many people, setting smaller, more obtainable goals is far more effective, as long

as they are realistic, achievable and sustainable.

This is where the advantages of me and my fellow Personal Trainers come into the mix. We have the experience and the expertise to help keep your efforts manageable, on track and as enjoyable as physically possible. If you’re already into your gym training and are just looking for new ideas, then why not book a 5 session package with us so that we can show you how to spice things up. Or if you’re worried about stepping into a health club, maybe we could meet up and train outside or even in the comfort of your own home!

I for one love the New Year as it means new people just like you begin their health and fitness journeys. Over the years I have helped hundreds of people get started on their paths to their chosen goals. From sitting down and discussing the right training options for them and their lifestyle, through to helping them break down the vast barriers such as nutrition (there are so many, it can be confusing). To find out just how easy it has been for my clients to get to

Are you fed up with wasted workouts, spending hours in the gym and not achieving the results that you deserve?

Well we have the answer; The Metabolic Solution! From 2013 this will be the new name for Brighton Bootcamp. After careful reflection, we have decided to re-brand so as to more accurately reflect our business. Our training style is geared towards short high intensity workouts that deliver maximum results in a short space of time. The latest exercise research says that the intensity of a workout is

definitely more important than the duration, which is great news for those of you starved for time.

We use a training and nutrition method that will boost your metabolism fast! Combining resistance, body weight and high

intensity cardio exercises, we have designed a style of training that is geared towards flattening your abs, blasting fat, all while toning and tightening the entire body in as little as 30-45 minutes, 3x per week.

Unlike standard, boring "give me 3 sets of 10" workouts employed by average trainers, we join together old school toughness with the latest understanding in exercise science to

Max Strength is a group personal training gym specialising in Fat Loss, Strength and Muscle Building and Sport Specific Training

Every session at Max Strength is run by an experienced coach who knows every member's personal training goals and targets and ensures every session you put in brings you closer to achieving yours. We're finding that group sessions inspire our members to train harder which helps them to see results more quickly. And all our members agree - group training is more fun!

All our training programmes are based around weight training and conditioning. Weight training is a must if you want to lose body fat and build more muscle or strength. If you are an athlete it will greatly improve your speed and all-round performance. To support your training we also offer personalised nutrition and supplementation advice. We are the only gym in Brighton & Hove that offers a cutting-edge BioSignature Modulation programme - a programme that will improve body

composition and overall wellbeing.

We have been open for 14 months now and 2012 has been a great year for us and our members. For us and for them, Max Strength has never been "just another gym”. Our personal service means we have helped many members make permanent changes to how they look, feel and perform.

We support members competing in various events - from strongman and powerlifting, to bodybuilding and mixed martial arts. We believe

that training for an event can make training more rewarding and give better results.

Next year we are planning to organise our own series of strength events. There will be a mixture of powerlifting, strongman and athletic events - something for everybody! Details will be coming soon so make sure you like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter so you don't miss a thing.

We hope you'll come and join us. See you in the gym!

After 8 challenging weeks the results are in: The first Brighton’s Biggest Loser competitors lose 23 stone!

FREEDOM LEISURE PRESENTS BRIGHTON'SBIGGEST LOSER

Freedom Leisure’s Biggest loser’s overall winner is Christina Mcguinness with a total loss of almost 3 stone,18.1% of her original body weight, closely followed by Marc Stenning who also lost just under 3 stone, and a massive 16.81% of his body weight. The lucky winners both won Freedom Leisure Memberships and Personal training sessions to help them keep up the good work.

Other winners included Jincy Vincent and Amy Morgan, who both won nutritional supplements from Performance Foods.

Overall the event was a massive success with everyone who entered losing weight, a combined group total of 23 stone! The event took place at Stanley Deason Leisure Centre, and was based on the hit TV series 'The Biggest Loser' with weekly weigh-ins, training sessions and unlimited support. The groups where mentored by three of Freedom Leisure’s Personal Trainers: Joe Priddle, Kieran Lusk and Lauren Acton.

Each team had been set targets by their individual mentors from nutrition to personal training, shopping lists and recipes. Every angle was covered.

Training sessions were done both indoors and outdoors, with The PT’s not wanting to give too much away to the other teams in fear of giving away their teams secrets. Most training sessions varied from session to session with the aim of the course to encourage everyone

in a group session or one-to-one basis. Contestants varied from people wanting to lose a few pounds to people who wanted to lose a few stone, and they did!

A BIG congratulations to everyone involved in 2012's Biggest Loser! We are very proud of you and are looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

If you would like to be a part of our next Brighton’s Biggest Loser competition, we will be starting this on 5th February 2013. This time we are including an extra week, special guests, as well as group discounts. All bookings will be on a first come first serve basis with limited spaces available. To avoid disappointment book your space now by calling 01273 694 281. To learn more about all local Freedom Leisure centres visit www.freedom-leisure.co.uk

TOM DAVIS

What do you love about judo?I love the fact it’s one-on-one and a personal challenge.

What has been the highlight of your judo career so far?Winning the gold medal at the 2012 London British Open was definitely a high point, plus winning bronze medals at three World Cups in Buenos Aires, Lisbon and Madrid.

What’s the biggest setback you’ve faced to date? Knee, shoulder and ankle injuries meant I missed out on the past two Olympic Games and lost my UK lottery funding in 2008: that made it extremely difficult for me to train at the same level. Many great sportsmen and women succeed after injury breaks and I’m inspired I can do this too.

Tom Davis is the 2012 British Open Judo Champion and an ambassador for Sport Makers, a lottery funded programme that

gives you the skills and knowledge to get more people playing sport

What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self?Take every opportunity that is thrown your way as you never know where it might lead you.

What’s the best thing about the Sport Makers Programme? The Sport Makers programme promotes physical activity to a wide audience and in particular to people over the age of 16 who often don’t know what’s out there for them. The flexibility of the programme is also great as volunteers can decide what activity they want to run and how often they want to run it.

Why should people get involved and what difference can it make?Sport can have a massive impact on your life in terms of socialising, building confidence and learning team skills plus the health benefits are indisputable. While London 2012 is fresh in our memories, now is a great time to become a Sport Maker to inspire other people to get back into sport - whether it’s a running club or simply taking a few mates for a kick about.

What have you learned from being involved in Sport Makers? There are thousands of people out there who use their passion for sport to inspire others. The variety of activities that volunteers get up to astounds me too!

When are you hosting a Sport Makers workshop and how do I sign up?I’ll be hosting a workshop at Freedom Leisure’s King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove on Saturday 2 February, 2013, from 10am - 1pm. Sign up for FREE at www.sportmakers.co.uk
