We are supporting over 600 young people to use ICT responsibly and productively, a task that needs to be supported at home.

Questions:HOW MUCH RELIANCE ON THE DEVICE?Always working hard to achieve balance. Devices are only used when they are needed:research for inquiry, to type up a text or to record a video reflection.Students are not on their devices all day. Some days they will use the devices more than others, some days they may not use them at all. It depends on the learning they are doing.

SECURITY / DAMAGE / LOSS?Very few incidents regarding devices security / damage / loss and all of them have been resolved promptly. Students are able to take their bags directly inside when they arrive at school so their devices are not sitting outside classrooms.

ARE WE REPLACING TRADITIONAL LEARNING METHODS?

Not at all. We’re very proud of our teaching and learning program. The devices are a tool to compliment and extend our current approach. We must support students to develop skills, but that will not be at the expense of handwriting, reading books etc.

BENEFITS OF 1:1 OVER CLASS SET?Students having a 1:1 device means they have immediate access to information as required. It also means that students do not have to wait for a particular time of week to access a shared laptop. This means less delays in getting work complete.

ARE THEY DISTRACTING?No. Teachers create an environment in the classroom. Of course, for students where their parents have allowed them to have games installed, there is a temptation to play them. We do have a NO GAMES RULE on devices.

Safety is a TOP priority for all of us.

We have had cases of students using their device inappropriately.

Some at school, some at home.

263 out of 269 students have a device.

All incidents were addressed.

*Each year we book a cyber safety expert.

Restrictions.There is a document you can download from the BYOD website that steps you through setting up Restrictions.

RESTRICTIONS Turn off in app purchases and app

downloads. Turn off iMessage and FaceTime. Set age restrictions for apps and web

searches. Lock AirDrop (optional) Deleting apps. Block apps. Game centre – Block friends /

multiplayer games.

Games.• Students CAN have games on their device.

• Games must be age appropriate.

• Games WILL NOT be played at school at ANY time.

• Games must be stored in a single folder.

• Aim to select games with some educational value.

• School reserves the right to delete games.

Chat…To block or not to block?

Picture this…Your child is hanging out with their friends at the park and says something mean. You find out.

What do you do?

Ban them from hanging out with their friends forever.

Support them to see the impact they had on their friend, ensure they apologise to restore the relationship and move on viewing it as a learning experience.

When students make mistakes in learning, we teach them. When students make mistakes in behaviour, we teach them!

Home Guideline Considerations…

- Time spent on the device?

- What the device is used for?

- When / if the device is used?

- Where is it used?

- Understandings (read as consequences!).

Home guidelines – Example Only.Storage: Kitchen bench for charging.

Time limit: 30 mins 4 times a week.

Use: Home Learning / Mathletics / Reading Eggs.

When: 4:30 – 5:00pm

Where: Kitchen table only.

Understandings:- I ask before using the iPad. - When the timer goes off, so does the iPad. - I earn my time by doing chores. - If I ask for more time, I lose time! - I NEVER use the App Store without a parent. - I NEVER communicate with anyone without a parent present. - If something makes me feel uncomfortable, I tell an adult straight away. - I will SHOW MY SCREEN at all times. - iPad use is a privilege, NOT a right!

Yr 3’s third term inquiry theme, Beautiful Biodiversity, culminated in an Expo that

showcased the learning students had completed throughout the term.

iPads played a critical role in research and electronic and hard copy presentation of

information, strategies and communication.
