Aim

To raise young people’s awareness of health and safety hazards in the workplace

before they embark on work experience or their first job

Rationale

A young person is seriously injured in a UK workplace every 40 minutes

In the UK, in the last decade, 66 under-19s have been killed at work

National Roll-Out

Successfully piloted during 2006/2007Wrote to all 5,000 secondary schools in May 2007900 schools have registered an interest450 schools have gained centre approval55,000 candidate entries to dateExpecting 90,000+ candidates this year

Entry Level Qualification

Accredited by QCA in the National Qualifications Framework

Approved under Section 96 for learners aged 18 and under

Fits into existing programmes of study for GCSE Science, PHSE, ASDAN or work-related learning

Provides a formal assessment outcome to the delivery of health and safety in the National Curriculum

Contributes to school performance figures (3.5 points)

Entry Level Qualification

In dialogue with QCA about fast tracking the qualification into the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)
