LETTER FROM THE CURATE

Greetings ,

Well we have had ‘flaming June’ which was unseasonably

wet......but perhaps we need to hold in our mind that the

flames of Pentecost are a more important image for us to re-

member. During that time I very much enjoyed the “Messy

Church” and “Open the Book” sessions in schools where we

spent time exploring the coming of the Holy Spirit with sto-

ries, very messy activities and brightly coloured cakes,

which was great fun for all.

And a big thank you to all those who decorated the churches

throughout the month and of particular note was the display

in Llanferres church creating the colours and inspiration of

Pentecost.

I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches

for a year now and it was a joy on 29th June to be ordained

to the priesthood at St Asaph cathedral. It was a privilege to

be asked to be the celebrant at the Eucharist for the whole

mission area on 30th June. Thank you all for your prayers

and ongoing support throughout my curacy with you . I will

be continuing to be part of the Bro Famau group of churches

as a locally ordained priest.

Last month, I was very encouraged by Nannerch and

Rhydymwyn churches holding Thy Kingdom Come prayer

stations between Ascension day and Pentecost, especially

as the children from the new federated schools of Nercwys

Page 5: BRO FAMAU GROUP OF CHURCHES CHURCHES …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site14097/July_Aug 2019 emag.pdf · I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches for a year

5

and Nannerch , now known as Nantlwys School came along

to use the stations to pray the Lords Prayer in a meaningful

way.

Over the next few months there will be courses run for those

wishing to be commissioned as pastoral assistant and or

worship leaders for your own church or within the Mold Mis-

sion Area. We are working towards the 2020 vision for the

diocese which is a model of shared ministry and it is im-

portant that those who feel called to these roles are given the

training and experience required. If you are interested please

contact The Reverend Daniel or myself .

In the summer months of July and August, when I hope the

sun will be shining, there will of course be a number of social

events coming up which I hope to attend . But I hope you will

all support and bring along friends to enjoy music, strawberry

teas and coach trips....and many more events as advertised.

Yours in Christ

Rev’d Kathy Stewart

Questions Answered

If there are any other questions that anyone would like to ask, I’m sure there would be someone in our Bro Famau team who would be happy to try to find an answer!

‘ LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION ’

These thoughts are prompted by another of those questions that arise in people’s minds concerning our religion. It was instigated specifically by the passage of Genesis that tells about the tower of Babel. ( Genesis 11: 1-9 ) In it the Lord comes down to earth and sees that his people have built a tower reaching to the heavens. He is afraid that working together, they are able to do anything they want, so he confuses their speech, destroying their unity and scat-tering them all over the world.

I believe that this story is a myth, and the powerful message is that whatever we manage to do is in the power of God; if we do not acknowledge that God is all-powerful and behind all our efforts, what we do will be destroyed.

The wider question is what God’s stance is in all this; is he a god of vengeance, inflicting evil upon us, or does he keep us safe from evil as we ask in our prayers?

In our Morning Worship service there are two versions of the Lord’s Prayer. In the traditional one that most of us were brought up with there is the line above, ‘ lead us not into temptation.’ In the modern version it has been changed to ‘ save us from the time of trial.’ The implication was that God deliberately puts us in the way of evil so the modern version intends to alter that to a plea to protect us from evil.

This new version is used in Anglican and Methodist Churches, though we have the option to stay with the traditional words. In the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis said in 2017 that it is better to say ‘ do not let us fall into temptation.’ It was not a papal decree so while RC churches in France, Italy and Spanish-speaking coun-

Page 11: BRO FAMAU GROUP OF CHURCHES CHURCHES …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site14097/July_Aug 2019 emag.pdf · I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches for a year

11

tries have adopted the change, those in Britain, the USA and Ger-many have not and stay with ‘ lead us not into temptation.’

Jesus seems to have used Jewish devotion as a basis for his pray-er and in psalm 119 v133 we can find the line, ‘ never let iniquity have dominion over me.’ This raises the question of what Jesus actually said; he probably spoke to his disciples in Aramaic, but it was reported by Matthew and Luke in Greek as, ‘ do not bring us into temptation ’ ( Matthew 6: 13 ) and ‘ may you not lead us into temptation ’ ( Luke 11: 4 )

Temptation is an invitation to do evil and whether God leads us into it or protects us from it is important. Going back to the tower of Ba-bel, its construction by men could be seen as an attempt to take over God’s role. God asserted the power of good by destroying hu-man ability to work together; this might appear to be evil in itself, and is why I believe the story is not true in factual terms, but car-ries a meaningful message. Like many myths, it is limited in reach; the desire to learn other languages could be seen to be temptation to restore unity between nations, which is very much needed in modern times to end conflict. Ability to learn languages is after all believed to be a skill conferred by the Holy Spirit!

Does our God put temptation in our way or act to keep us away from it? Why does God allow evil in the world? That is a philosophi-cal question that has been debated since ancient times, and so many different opinions have been expressed. I have an approach that will not settle it, but arises from personal experience so might be worth thinking about.

A few weeks ago a friend was distressed to have come across her young teenage son’s Instagram account; there were offensive views and foul language and although he did not write it, he had ticked ‘ like.’ When she challenged him about it he said he didn’t know why he’d ‘ liked ’ it. It struck a chord with me because when I was a young teenager my mother found something similar in my bedroom ( not on Instagram of course, but something I’d written out after hearing it from boys at school.) She challenged me about it, and the discussion, after 60 or so years is still seared into my

Page 12: BRO FAMAU GROUP OF CHURCHES CHURCHES …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site14097/July_Aug 2019 emag.pdf · I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches for a year

12

memory. In seeking out this material there was temptation to go down a road that leads to all sorts of evil, and I hope my mother’s intervention and my friend’s stopped the downward journey.

Evil exists in the world. Why it does is a mystery, but we should not believe God put it there. However, we have to come into contact with and encounter it, like tender greenhouse plants that need hard-ening off before they are put out into the open air. Our model is Je-sus, and it was necessary for him to meet and suffer the world’s evil so that he could conquer it. We cannot remain naïve, but must face evil as he did and draw courage from whatever source we can to oppose it, believing that God is the true source. We will not suffer as he did, except in terms of pride when someone, such as our mother, catches us out. The consequences if he had decided not to go to the cross are too awful to think about. If we fail to challenge our own wrong-doing there could well be personal disaster and it will inevita-bly add in small part to the evil in the world.

I believe that ‘ save us from the time of trial ’ attempts to avoid the encounter that we have to face as citizens of the world if we are al-so God’s people. Jesus prayed for himself that he would have the cup of suffering taken from him, but knowing all the time that God’s will must be done ( Luke 22: 39-46 ) and he was given the strength to do it.

He also prayed in the same place that his disciples would not have to face the time of trial, presumably because they were not ready for it, like little children; later on as apostles they did, even to death, and their strength of purpose built up the Church. Jesus has laid the foundation for building a sin-free fellowship, but we must contribute to it brick-by-brick to make our own assertion to the good life that is to be attained in the kingdom of God.

This is a heavy topic that has arisen from a question that one per-son brought to church on a Sunday morning. Please keep the ques-tions coming, and also say whether you believe in my view of things by writing in to the magazine.

We celebrated Pentecost at June’s Messy Church. We looked at the wonderful power and actions of the Holy Spirit

in its various forms. We used a wonderful painted tree (kindly donated by Rhydymwyn

Church) and made doves to hang onto the tree. We decorated cupcakes with icing, marshmallows and a candle

to celebrate the fact that the Church had its birthday at Pentecost. We had a game to see who could blow a Malteeser up a slope

with a straw. The Craft Table was the messiest yet! We made windmills out of paper and pencils, bunting with our hopes and prayers for the fu-ture, and wind shakers with so much kindly donated ribbon. There was so much ribbon, we will have to find much ribbon related ac-

tivity for the weeks to come! We told the story of the Holy Spirit arriving to the people at Pente-

cost and then had beans on toast and jelly (Pentecost colours) and ice cream.

A few of our helpers were not able to be there this time and we are indebted to all the adults who mucked in, helped out and en-

sured there were no drawing pin related disasters! They certainly earned their jelly…

Next time we are looking again at the ‘I am’ sayings of Jesus. Bread and light will feature, together with the labyrinth (rained off

this time!). Come and join in the fun on July 21st at 4 pm, Gwernaffield

Church Hall.

WORDSEARCH - ST SWITHUN

St. Swithun is the saint you can blame for rainy summers. It is said that if it rains on his special day, 15

th July, it will then rain for

40 days after that. Swithun was Bishop of Winchester in the 9th

century, and famous for his charitable gifts and for building churches. When he was dying in 862, he asked to be buried in the cemetery of the Old Minster, just outside the west door. But on 15

th July 971 Swithun was dug up and moved into the cathe-

dral itself. That same day many people claimed miraculous cures, but the heavens opened. The unusually heavy rain that day, and for days following, was attributed to the power of St. Swithun. Swithun was moved again in 1093, into the new Win-chester cathedral.

AROUND OUR CHURCHES

Llanferres, St Berres, Llanferres, St Berres, Llanferres, St Berres, Llanferres, St Berres, Open the Book

We have recently told the story of how Jesus refused to turn chil-dren away. As always, the story involved excellent acting- some seriously heavy bouncers complete with sunglasses! It’s always a joy to work with such class acts!

Pentecost Thank you to Gay for providing such a beautiful and thought- pro-voking decoration for the church at Pentecost. We are indebted to all who arrange the flowers and care so well for the church. Any-one who wishes to volunteer to help, financially or creatively, would always be welcomed.

Croeso Pawb Pentecost Members of Mothers’ Union were busy in Ysgol Nannerch on Wednesday 12th June involved in Pentecost activities. Some chil-dren acted, for the whole school, the story of the Ascension and the disciples receiving the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. All the children blew like the wind of Pentecost. They were reminded that the day the disciples received the gifts was the birth day of the Christian church. The craft activities were based on wind, fire, doves and birthday cards. The fire breathing dragons were especially popu-lar. The afternoon concluded in school with the children acting the disciples' story for the parents, then birthday cakes appeared. We sang ‘Happy Birthday, dear church’ and then enjoyed the cake!

Thy Kingdom Come

In the days between Ascension Day and Pentecost Sunday, the churches of Nannerch and Rhydymwyn were involved in the Worldwide Wave of Prayer- Thy Kingdom Come. Stations set up in the churches explored sections of the Lord’s Prayer. These en-couraged people to reflect and pray, and there was evidence that several people had taken that opportunity. There were four sta-tions in St Michael’s and two in St John’s. The stations in Nan-nerch were visited by the children from Ysgol Nannerch and Ysgol Nercwys on the Friday of the week before Pentecost Sunday.

Breakfast Church

Pentecost Sunday was celebrated as we sat at tables at the back of the church. We reflected on how the Holy Spirit had empow-ered the disciples, and prayed that we could be inspired to use our God given gifts to spread the gospel. The readings and pray-ers were led by the children, who support our church so loyally. The breakfast menu this week was brioche and birthday cake.

‘Blooming Marvellous’- A LyCiG event We are hoping that the weather warms up so that the tubs, troughs and hanging baskets will be at their best for July 6th when they will be judged. Entry forms have gone to all the houses in the village, so we are hoping for a good response. Afternoon Tea in the Memorial Hall on that day from 3-5pm is sure to be well supported!

Nannerch and Rhydymwyn Mothers’ Union

On Thursday 6th June the Family Group Festival was held at St Ethelwold’s at Shotton. Two of our members were commissioned. Marion Watts was commissioned as Leader and Kathleen Beni-son was commissioned to the Diocesan Trustee Body. The Holy Eucharist was followed by refreshments.

Our next meeting at 2pm on 18th June at Rhydymwyn had Mary Atthews as our speaker- ‘Gross National Happiness- Bhutan'.

Thy Kingdom Come

As part of the global Wave of Prayer, two Prayer Stations were

set up in St John's between Ascension Day and Pentecost. We

prayed that those among our families and friends who have not

yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and his love for the

Leading your Church into Growth: A Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Saint Melangell, Llangynog (reputed to be the oldest Romanesque shrine in Great Britain) will take place on Thursday August 22nd. We will leave St John's at 9.30am and travel to Llangynog (1 1/2 hours) to arrive for tea/coffee. We will share cars to make the day as cost-effective as possible. The plan is to have a talk about Saint Melangell and a Holy Communion service, at noon, in the Shrine church with anointing and the laying on of hands for those who would find this helpful. A shared lunch will fol-low with refreshments before we leave. The cost will depend on how many are in our party and will be advised nearer the time. Please let Marion Watts know if you are interested in coming by the end of July. 01352 741350 [email protected])

Musical Evening

The Musical Evening held on 8th June proved very successful. We

all enjoyed the wonderful singing of our two local vocalists - Choris-ter, Rhys Duffty, delighted everyone with his beautiful singing and, again, Angela Parker excelled with a choice of music that appealed to everyone. How does she reach those high notes? How fortunate we are to have them both living in our Parish. A great evening and we raised £400.80 for church funds.

As well as posting items of interest and events on our Holy Trinity Facebook page, Peter Green has also agreed to do likewise on the Gwernaffield/Pantymwyn Facebook page. If you have anything of interest, please contact Peter – [email protected]

SUNDAY BIBLE READINGS PREVIEWED

Please use these introductions to prepare for worship. If you are a reader at home who is unable to come to church, you might like to use these pages, with your Bible, to join the congregation on a Sun-day in the reading of the same passages Sunday 7th of July - Third after Trinity

Isaiah 66: 10-14 It is the end of this short reading that relates to the gospel. In the time of God’s final act of salvation, says the writer, those who are his servants will know his power at work in them. So it was when Jesus sent out disciples with his power and authority.

Galatians 6: [ 1-6 ] 7-16 Paul brings to end this letter which we have over several weeks. He continues to describe Christian life un-der the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then a postscript in his own hand-writing sums up an earlier point of controversy.

Luke 10: 1-11, 16-20 As we read through this gospel we have al-ready heard of a time where Jesus sent the twelve on a mission. Now Luke tells of a different and larger group, sent by Jesus to do his work in his name, where he would soon follow.

Sunday 14th July - Fourth after Trinity

Deuteronomy 30: 9-14 Moses set God’s Law before the people not as a burden, but as a way to be followed with all their heart and soul. It was for them to choose this as a way of life.

Colossians 1: 1-14 The gospel was preached in Colossae by Epaphras, and we have no record of Paul going there. But he writes to assure them of his prayers, and to call them to a true doctrine of Christ alone as Saviour.

Luke 10: 25-37 A lawyer’s encounter with Jesus gives us the familiar parable of the good Samaritan - an unexpected lesson in neighbourli-ness.

Page 27: BRO FAMAU GROUP OF CHURCHES CHURCHES …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site14097/July_Aug 2019 emag.pdf · I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches for a year

27

Sunday 21st July - Fifth after Trinity

Genesis 18: 1-10a Hospitality is the theme of this reading and the gospel. Three strangers are given a warm welcome by Abraham and they tell him God’s promise of exactly what he wanted to hear.

Colossians 1: 15-28 Paul’s hymn to sovereignty of Christ is rich in images of his creation and salvation. The Church, Paul says, is caught up into the very presence of God.

Luke 10: 38-42 This brief incident contrasts Martha and Mary, sisters in Bethany. The way of welcoming Jesus can be active or contemplative, and both are good.

Sunday 28th July - Sixth after Trinity

Genesis 18: 20-32 We learn today some lessons about pray-er in this reading and the gospel. Abraham’s prayer is for God to spare a community for the sake of the innocent. We know that God listens to prayer and always answers.

Colossians 2: 6-15 [ 16-19 ] The purpose of this letter is to hold together the Colossian church in the face of a growing di-versity of teaching. Avoid all pointless speculation, remain cen-tred on Christ alone, says Paul. In particular, ignore those who go to extremes in living out their faith.

Luke 11: 1-13 When Jesus taught his disciples about prayer, the words in one form or another became central for every Chris-tian. His lesson is that God our Father never refuses to listen or respond to his children.

Sunday 4th August - Seventh after Trinity

Ecclesiastes 1: 2, 12-14, 2: 18-23 This reading has a gloomy theme, as the writer describes all human endeavour as futile, ending in death for everyone. It undergirds Jesus’ teaching about the futility of concentrating on worldly success and acquiring ma-terial things.

Page 28: BRO FAMAU GROUP OF CHURCHES CHURCHES …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site14097/July_Aug 2019 emag.pdf · I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches for a year

28

Colossians 3: 1-11 As we have heard these past three Sun-days, this letter uses rich language to teach the unique riches of life in Christ, as Paul strives to recall this church from its danger-ous fragmentation. Their conduct as Christians, he now says, must be quite different from their previous lives.

Luke 12: 13-21 In a parable, Jesus illustrates the folly of spending all our energies piling up wealth and success. God takes no account of the things we acquire, but only the spiritual riches we invest.

Sunday 11th August - Eighth after Trinity

Genesis 15: 1-6 The end of this short reading is the link to the gospel, because it speaks of the complete faith and trust in God characteristic of Abraham.

Hebrews 11: 1-3, 8-16 Late in the first century AD, someone unknown wrote this profound theological document. This extract explores the nature of faith as seen in the Old Testament saints, and over the next few Sundays we will hear of the faith of Chris-tians.

Luke 12: 32-40 Our hearts must be centred on God, says Je-sus, as the only true important thing in our life. Then we will al-ways be ready and expectant when Christ comes to us.

Sunday 18th August - Ninth after Trinity

Jeremiah 23: 23-29 Do not expect the word of the Lord al-ways to be comfortable, says Jeremiah. False prophets tell only their dreams and their lies and comfortable messages; a true voice brings God’s challenge, burning and breaking our stubborn hearts.

Hebrews 11: 29 - 12: 2 This writer praises the faith of men and women of Israel in past times as lessons for us who have re-ceived the far greater revelation of God in Jesus. We have inher-ited what they could only hope for.

Page 29: BRO FAMAU GROUP OF CHURCHES CHURCHES …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site14097/July_Aug 2019 emag.pdf · I have been the curate in the Bro Famau group of churches for a year

29

Luke 12: 49-56 Jeremiah said God’s coming would be like fire, separating out all impurities. Jesus says this is what he has come to do; he will be the cause of unhappy divisions, because of those who fail to recognise the signs of his presence and his kingdom.

Sunday 25nd August - Tenth after Trinity

Isaiah 58: 9b-14 Justice and generosity, says Isaiah, are what God requires of us. And just as we find so often in the teachings of Jesus, there is here a challenge to the proper keeping of the Lord’s Sabbath.

Hebrews 12: 18-29 On recent Sundays we have heard this writer praising the saints of ancient times, while drawing a contrast between their faith and ours. Unlike them, he says, we come to God through Jesus without fear, in reverence and awe and thanksgiving.

Luke 13: 10-17 Jesus’ ministry was to teach and to heal. On a Sabbath day he was permitted to teach, but the synagogue Presi-dent objected to him healing a crippled woman. Jesus responds with a sharp lesson about priorities.

NIGHT SHELTER

If you recall many of us supported the Wrexham Churches Night Shelters last winter.

Inspired by this our Mission Area Warden Mel Morgan met with Stephen Convill, from Housing for Justice at Christ Church, Pontblyddyn. Together they felt that Christ Church would be an ideal venue for one of the Night Shelters this coming winter.

If approved volunteers will be needed to host the project on a Sunday Evenings. The normal shift pattern is 5pm to 10pm, then 10pm to 6am, with 6am to 8pm to pack up the beds

Financial help would also be needed to meet the cost of heating, fuel for the minibus and food for—an evening meal, breakfast and a packed lunch for the next day.

Please consider in your congregation what you could do to sup-port. It might be a fund raising activity by baking cakes, donating food, donating toiletries or helping set up the camp beds.

Please, just consider what you are able to do
