Introduction

The Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences constitutes a part of the Biomedical

Sciences Group at KU Leuven. Our high-quality teaching is based on our research in

Human Movement Sciences, Biomedical Movement Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences and

Physiotherapy. We carry out intensive interdisciplinary and international collaboration with

departments of other faculties (Medicine, Engineering and Psychology), other universities

and university hospitals, national institutions for competitive sports, and the government.

6 | GENERAL INFORMATION

1 General information

The Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences is oriented towards research-based

teaching in Physical Education, Movement Sciences/Sport Sciences, Physiotherapy and

Rehabilitation Sciences. Our mission is threefold:

to be knowledgeable of and add to the progress of scientific research in Movement

Sciences/ Sport Sciences, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences;

to provide high-level education in Physical Education, Movement Sciences/Sport

Sciences, Physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences;

to offer scientific services to the community.

To achieve this mission, we rely on more than 100 highly qualified colleagues. Our research

is embedded in two research departments (Movement Sciences and Rehabilitation

Sciences), each generating considerable scientific output in highly-ranked journals. We

also aim to pursue and enlarge this scientific track by attracting (master’s and doctoral)

students and (postdoctoral) researchers from abroad. Faculty grants are available to

facilitate short visits of internationally well-known scholars.

Our educational programmes disseminate scientific knowledge generated within the

domain of ‘human movement’. The Faculty of Movement Sciences and Rehabilitations

Sciences offers two Bachelor programmes and four Master programmes. These

programmes are listed below. We encourage students and staff to participate in

international education programmes jointly organised with other universities within and

outside Europe.

1.1 Facts and figures

Each year the Faculty welcomes nearly 2900 students.

The staff includes a team of more than 60 professors and many of them also work in

the University Hospitals.

On average 16 doctoral degrees are delivered each year.
