Who are the men and women who will build the South African Economy

Page 3: Broken Local Government: A community builder’s casebook for change in 2011

Western Cape has the lowest poverty levels and backlogs in South Africa followed by Gauteng

Eastern Cape ,Kwazulu Natal and Limpopo have the highest poverty rates and backlogs in South Africa

Over half of households in some municipalities have no access to water electricity or sanitation

This means more services must be sustained by less. With the exception of Gauteng and the Western Cape , many municipalities have a declining rates

base and therefore less income.

There is an alarming increase in children with Diarrhoea which can be linked to lack of potable water and Hiv infection

Since 2000 TB cases have increased by 134.8%. TB is spread more easily in overcrowded households and where hot clean water is not always available

14 608 008 people are on social welfare grants

Page 4: Broken Local Government: A community builder’s casebook for change in 2011

There are just over 13 million households in South Africa and just over 11 million households have access to free basic water.

Over 1 million poor households still have no basic free water and 500 000 have no infrastructure to get free basic water.

Only 34% of Black people have piped water to their house.

Over 1million poor households still have no basic free water and 500 000 have no infrastructure to get free basic water.

36% of households have no refuse disposal

17.2% of households have no electricity (the highest in Eastern Cape with 32% and KZN with 27% ))

Only 5% of roads are classified as very good,11% good and the rest are fair to poor and very poor.

Redeem the Communities

We know that something amazing can happen, gradually but unmistakably in our Communities. It's not only about lower crime, or the creation of better retail outlets, or more families living in the Community, though we certainly appreciate all those things.

It’s about discipled politicians working to support Civil Society and its cornerstone which is the Church. It’s about changing people and the very fabric of their communities. Not just inside churches, but in neighbourhoods, offices, theatres, and schools. Not just traditional people, religious people, or moral people, but also skeptical people, sophisticated people, spiritual people, broken and brilliant and irreligious people. This isn’t something that just happens when Christians come to save the Community. It happens when Christians come to love the Community. To become what we call a culture for the common good that will transform Civil Society and re-establish communities.

That’s why we started a movement called the African Christian Democratic Party. We want to serve and participate in a growing network of leaders, prayer networks and churches, across denominations, who have the same kind of vision for their Community that we have.
