Schools are there to give children the knowledge and skills they need to become active members of society. Many children are rightly worried about climate change, global poverty and the impact of our lifestyles on our environment. Schools can demonstrate ways of living that are models of good practice for children and their communities. They can build sustainable development into the learning experience of every child to encourage innovation and improvement.  (Alan Johnson October 2006)

What does Sustainability mean to Pickhurst?

At Pickhurst Juniors we care about the future of

our planet.

Sustainability means taking responsibility for our environment and educating the wider

community about our goals.

Page 9: Bromley Sustainable Schools Forum

What do we do at Pickhurst Juniors?

• We recycle: jewellery, mobile phones, paper and card, ink cartridges. We are planning to recycle even more in the next few months.

• We use energy-responsibly we have light monitors in every class.

• We compost our food waste for the school garden.

• We plant seeds and flowers.• We have installed Solar Panels.• We develop environmental

awareness in our school community.

• We raise money for environmental charities.

Jeeja Day!

• On 12th June we are holding a ‘carbon neutral’ day. We will be trying to use a little energy as possible by walking to school, not using whiteboards and trying to preserve resources!

• We are also using the day to raise money for our link school in Uganda, Jeeja Primary.
