Term 2 27 June 2019 Week 9
GEPS Breakfast Club Starting the day with food and friends!
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8:15am – 8:50am in the school library
Our Breakfast Club is run by the school and a gold coin donation is
appreciated.
Next Thursday we will be having a special assembly at 1pm
for NAIDOC Week. Everyone is welcome to join us as our
students share their work with each other. A wonderful way
to end the term!
We are incredibly lucky at Goulburn East to have a supportive
and active P&C. Due to their fundraising efforts supported by
our families; they have been able to make a generous
donation towards the purchase of new readers for our
classrooms. In turn this means that we can update the books
currently being used as home readers. Thank you P&C!
Encourage your children to read over the holidays. Find a
book that grabs their imagination! There is a book to suit
everyone. Stephen King, the famous author once said that
“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
What a lovely idea!
I hope everyone has a great winter break. School returns for
students on Tuesday 23 July.

Commonwealth Bank Student Banking Rewards
Last chance to redeem your student banking reward tokens.
If you have 9 or more tokens and you would like to redeem them for a reward, then
bring them in to the school office during lunch time on Friday 28 June.
Netball
On Tuesday 18 June, two teams of netballers (20 students, both boys and girls) from Goulburn East PS participated in the Southern Highlands Netball Gala Day.
One team from 3/4 was involved in a non-competitive round robin. The other team from 5/6 competed against many other teams including Bowral, SSP, St Joseph’s and other Southern Highland teams.
We had some wins on the day and some losses but were delighted with the support from several parents, especially on such a cold day. My thanks go to Heather McIntosh who “coached” the junior team for the day. Much appreciated.
Our students were enthusiastic, good sports and thought it was a fun day and would like to do more netball. The canteen was enjoyed by all, particularly the lovely free fruit!

News from 5/6R
All students in 5/6R have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the dance2bfit program with Jaki. Jaki has taught them how to do the ‘funky hip hop’, the ‘clapping sticks’ and our favourite partner dance, the ‘crazy hand shake’.
Jaki has been absolutely amazing and we have been very fortunate to have her expertise and knowledge to teach these dances to all our students who have been engaged every week and learnt the dances quickly.
Students in 5/6R have continued their journey of learning about Aboriginal people who have helped make Australia great. In groups, students were asked to research a famous Aboriginal person and present their findings to the class.
All five groups presented their information in unique ways:
A news presentation in video form about Neville Bonner, who was the first Aboriginal person elected to Federal Parliament by popular vote in Queensland from 1971 to 1983.
A podcast about Lowitja O’Donoghue, who was named Australian of the Year in 1984 for her work to improve the welfare of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
A power point presentation on the life of Lionel Rose, the first Aboriginal Boxer who won the World Bantamweight Boxing Championship in 1968.
The most unique presentation was the Q&A about Mandawuy Yunupinga. The students discovered he was the first Aboriginal School Principal and he ensured Aboriginal and European ideas were taught at his school. He also went on to form the band Yothi Yindi.
The last group presented a radio interview about Evonne Goolagong, the famous Aboriginal tennis player who was the world’s number one tennis player in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
All groups worked together and presented detailed information as well as entertaining their audience. It was a pleasure to watch all of their presentations. Mrs Robinson
