Bush Tucker

Bush tucker, also called bush food, is food native to Australia. Aboriginal Australians

have used indigenous plants for food and medicine for millennia.

News from 5/6R

5/6R have been studying the different cultures that immigrate to Australia. We have learnt that many of them

came to escape wars and for political reasons, some came to find gold and many more came to Australia for a

better life. Through our readings of ‘The Happiest Refugee’, ‘Chinese Cinderella’ and ‘We are born Free’ we

have come to realise that many migrants brought ideas, food, business and other opportunities to make

Australia great. Did you know that the great surgeon Victor Chang, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, business woman Tan

Le, David Pocock, Kostya Tszyu, Julia Gillard, Dr Nouria Salehi, Les Murray and Daria Gavrilova all migrated to

Australia? Each of them has contributed something truly amazing to our country. 5/6R were asked to research

someone famous or a family member who had migrated to Australia and then prepare a presentation for the

class about why they migrated, difficulties they had in settling into Australia and what contributions they made

to society. All presentations were fantastic and enjoyed by everyone, especially me, I loved them all. The

students were also asked to bring in a dish from their person’s country of origin to share with the class.

Needless to say, on Thursday there was a multicultural feast happening in 5/6R’s room at lunch. It was

spectacular to see the amount of food brought in. All the students were very adventurous and tried a bit of

everything. Pizza, fried rice, and pilly milly dumplings were everyone’s favourite. Mrs Robinson

Reconciliation Week in 4/5M

Students in 4/5M learnt about the Stolen Generations and ‘The Apology’ given by the then Prime Minister

Kevin Rudd. The students watched and discussed the Apology, and interviews with Indigenous Australians.

During this time we also explored the events that occurred from 1910-1970 when Indigenous children were

removed from their families. We completed Sorry Day art work which reflected what we had learnt during

this week.

Soccer Knockout Competition

The boys’ soccer team advanced to the 3rd round of the Soccer Knockout Competition. They played and

defeated Goulburn Public and Bungendore Public School. Round 3 is to be held against Goulburn West. This

game will be a tough one and if we win that one we move onto Round 4!

Parliament House and Reconciliation Place

On Tuesday 11 June Stage 3 visited Parliament House. Once Vice Captain Brody got through security we went

to the Senate and the House of Representatives. It was in the Senate the students established that the roles

and responsibilities of the senate are very different to those in the House of Representatives. We enjoyed

walking through the gallery and seeing the portraits of past Prime Ministers - everybody thought Gough

Whitlam’s portrait was very eye catching. We also ventured up to the roof for some photos, and afterwards we

walked to the park alongside Old Parliament House admiring the spectacular garden. After lunch we visited

Reconciliation Place, where the students were given a tour of the many sculptures and statues that reflect on

the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and the sad times of our history. Reconciliation Place

also celebrates the success and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and highlights the role

that we all have in moving forward and making sure history doesn’t repeat itself in Australia. Mrs Robinson

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD HAS TO STAY AWAY FROM SCHOOL?

It is important to let the school know when your child will be away and why your child is absent. Parents

have several options of notifying the school of their child’s absence:

by ringing the school on the morning of each day’s absence

by emailing through an explanation of the absence

by sending in a Reason for Absence form on the first day the student returns to school after an

absence.

By sending in a Reason for Absence via the Skoolbag app.

Any note of explanation forwarded to school should contain:

Your child’s name and class

The day(s) and date(s) that your child was absent from school

The reason the child was absent

The signature of the child’s parent or caregiver

An Application for Extended Leave (Travel) must be completed PRIOR to leave being taken for

approval to be considered; otherwise the absences will be marked as unjustified.

If your child is seeing a Doctor due to illness, please request a Medical Certificate covering the date(s)

of the absence(s). Extended absences due to illness are eligible for an Exemption from School if a

Doctor’s Certificate is provided for the entire period of illness.

Second hand books and toys needed!

The 26 students in the Opera House Choir are raising money to assist with their travel

costs to Sydney in September.

All donations of great books and toys which are no longer used and are in good

condition will be greatly appreciated!

Please send in the books or toys by Monday 24 June.

We will be running our stall in the last week of this term.
