Letter from the Senior Center Director
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday! As we start a new year, classes
and programs that were on holiday break resume.
Senior safety is a priority at the Senior Center all year. There are special risks in the cold months –
with icy roads and snow covered steps, walks and driveways. If you’re not on Ready Notify, please call the
Brooklyn Senior Center to register so you’ll get alerts about severe weather and road and city building clo-
sures. Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-
driven snow that lasts for several days. To prepare, winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full; make
sure your furnace and chimney are in good repair; put together a supply kit with at least three days’ supply of
non-perishable, easy to prepare food and water; keep a seven-day supply of medicines on hand; keep your cell
phone charged; and keep warm coats, hats, and gloves ready. Remember Brooklyn Senior Center provides
transportation on our warm, clean, safe bus – let us do the driving.
AARP will help prepare tax returns on Mondays and Wednesdays starting in February. Call the Senior
Center to schedule an appointment. (No walk-ins.) See page 3 for details.
On Friday, January 13 come enjoy the movie Dave starring Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver and
enjoy hot chocolate and Chicken Croissant Sandwich. Tickets are $5.00.
On Friday, February 10 we’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day with a pizza-and-salad lunch and the heart-
warming romantic comedy movie Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Tickets are $5
Indoor bocce resumes on February 4th and 5th. We’ll be closed Monday, January 16 and February 20
for Martin Luther King Day and Presidents’ Day.
We’re delighted to hold the annual St. Patrick’s Day lunch and dance on Thursday, March 16. If
you have a group of 8 you can reserve a table. Tickets will be on sale at the desk.
If you want a warm, friendly place, fun activities (indoor bocce, bingo, various exercise programs, arts
and crafts), drop in. The Brooklyn Senior Center is a wonderful place to come to stay warm and cozy, renew
acquaintances, and make new friends. We’d love to see you!
Best Regards,
Karen Fratto

COUNCIL MEETINGS November 14, 2016
Authorized the District Board of Health of Cuyahoga County for Health Services for the year 2017 for $46,016. This is a yearly contract and a 5% increase from the previous two years.
Authorized a purchase and service agreement between the City of Brooklyn and Bailey Communica-tions, Inc. for a new VOIP phone system and full service five year maintenance agreement in the amount of $170,405.43. This purchase will save the City over $50,000 per year in monthly costs through the phone provided.
Approved Amended Annual Appropriations for 2016. General Fund expenditures totaled $16,172,711 including a large transfer to the Economic Development Fund.
Authorized the Mayor of the City of Brooklyn to pay an incentive to employees able to "opt-out" of medical coverage under the City's medical plan. The necessity comes from the fact that the IRS has now issued a final rule on how “opt-out” payments, i.e. payments made to employees for wav-ing coverage, are treated when it comes to the Employer’s duty to offer affordable insurance.
Authorized the Mayor to enter into an agreement with Software Solutions, Inc. to provide an ac-counting and software system and upgrade for the Finance and Payroll Departments. SSI’s VIP software upgrade and conversion will contribute to streamlining the City’s financial processes. These efforts will positively impact each of the City’s departments as well as enhance the finan-cial information available for Directors and City Council. The total cost over the next four years is $169,121 ($97,700 Upgrade + $71,421 Maintenance).
November 28, 2016 Approved a $2,500 grant from Wal-Mart for the Shop with a Cop Program. Thank you Wal-Mart! Approved a resolution supporting the efforts of organized labor unions and non-union employees
to protect retirement healthcare costs sharing for active workers and retirees. Approved the application of the City of Brooklyn to apply for Community Development Block Grant
Funds & Supplemental Grant for the Roadoan Road Reconstruction Project. Major project compo-nents include removal and replacement of curbs and curb drains, full asphalt wearing course re-moval and replacement, full depth concrete repair up to 25% of the pavement surface, apron re-placement, selected sidewalk replacement and repair and relining of the underlying sewers. Roadoan Road is a 0.7 mile long 30 foot wide roadway. Roadoan Alley is a 0.27 mile 17 feet wide roadway which provides access to homes fronting Roadoan Road. The estimated cost of the en-tire project is approximately $2.4 million and these grants if awarded would total $200,000.
Approved the creation and use of a Brooklyn Community Improvement Corporation Fund (a Sub-Fund of #102). This will allow for the disbursement of funds necessary for the Corporation to carry out its designated mission and responsibilities and allow for the accurate tracking of ex-pense and revenues within the Corporation. Additionally, this was one of the suggestions by the Auditor when reviewing the CIC’s records.
Approved the Medical Insurance Renewal from Medical Mutual of Ohio (MMO) providing medical insurance coverage or eligible employees from December 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017 and dental coverage from December 1, 2016 to January 1, 2019. The City presented numerous plans to the health care committee this year and the committee chose to bring 3 of those plans in front of the employees. The current plan stays the same with a 1.4% increase in costs plus two new plans were introduced including the CleCare plan which is the same plan design but with a limited MetroHealth network and an HSA plan where the city will be contributing to if employ-ees move. Both of the later plans are a decreased cost to the city.
Authorized the purchase of 12 mobile data terminal for the Police Department for a total of $84,857.46. This was part of the 2016 capital budget.
