Trustees extend visionary leadership of President Machtley through 2020

4

At the January meeting of Bryant University’s Board of Trustees, held January 15, 2016, the Board voted unanimously to extend the contract for President Ronald Machtley through 2020. Machtley has served as Bryant’s president since 1996.

William J. Conaty ‘67, retired senior vice president of Corporate Human Resources for General Electric, Chair of the University’s Board of Trus-tees, said, “The Board is thrilled to extend and retain President Macht-ley’s commitment to Bryant University thru July 2020. Ron and Kati Machtley’s accomplishments over the past 20 years are truly remarkable and have elevated Bryant to a world-class university.” A record of achievement

Having served Bryant with distinction for 20 years, the Honorable Ronald Machtley has already established an unparalleled record of achievement for a college and university president and positioned Bryant for even greater accomplishments in the future. During his presidency, Bryant:

Transformed from a college of business to a university with an

AACSB-accredited College of Business that is recognized among the foremost in the world, a College of Arts and Sciences, and a new School of Health Sciences;

Enhanced its academic reputation and ascended in national rank-

ings (currently recognized among the Top Five 4-year business degrees by College Factual/U.S.A. Today and 11 th among U.S. News & World Report peers);

Expanded and diversified student enrollment, which has grown

60% since his tenure began, with new graduate degree programs and significantly more rigorous admission requirements;

Added nearly 450,000 sq. ft. of new facilities to Bryant’s Smithfield

campus, including recent investments of $75 million over the past 15 months for an additional 100,000 sq. ft. including a 50,000 sq. ft. Academic Innovation Center to be opened in August 2016;

Grew the endowment from $107 million to $176 million, accom-

plished through the success of Bryant’s first capital campaign and another historic fundraising campaign currently underway, which has already raised $53 million towards a goal of $75 million;

Established itself a leader in international education, with nearly

50% of students participating in study abroad programs and new areas of study including international business and global supply chain management;

Extended its international footprint by increasing the international-

ization of the Smithfield campus and in September 2015 opening a new four-year branch campus in Zhuhai, China, with an entering class of 160 students who will study business and receive the Bry-ant University degree. A 100,000 sq. ft. academic facility is under construction in Zhuhai and will be ready for the second semester;

Transitioned to NCAA Division I, competing against some of the

nation’s top champions and earning back-to-back Northeast Con-ference Commissioner’s Cup trophies while preparing student-athletes with exceptional levels of academic success. Bryant built a world-class Sports & Conditioning Center which opened in August 2015, and is currently completing construction on a new indoor turf facility that will be the finest in New England.

Although typically it is the president who gets most of the credit for transformational accomplishments in the life of a university, it was not-ed by Bryant’s Board that a strong and talented leadership team has been a trademark of Machtley’s tenure.

In addition, the Board also recognized the significant contributions of his spouse, Kati Machtley, who is the Director of the Bryant University Women’s Summit. Now in its 19th year, this annual conference is attended by more than a 1,000 and has sold out every year- becoming one of the most highly sought-after conferences of its kind. Presi-dent and Mrs. Machtley, who live on campus, have created a special close-knit community through their personal engage-ment with stu-dents, faculty, and staff, and their tireless participation in activities.

President Machtley stated, “For the past 20 years, Kati and I have been hon-ored to serve a great university with tremendous faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. We are humbled by the support and confidence of the Board and appreciate their confidence to continue the many initiatives now underway at Bryant.”

The Bryant idea

What do you get when you bring 900 students, 111 mentors (faculty, staff, student), 11 lead-ership team members, 53 alumni mentors, and 159 judges together on Bryant’s campus for 72 hours? The Bryant IDEA! Bryant IDEA (Innovation and Design Experience for All) is a fast-paced, intensive three-day experiential learning program for all first-year students, that took place on January 25-27, 2016. IDEA represents a key component in Bryant's unique integrated Gateway curriculum. The 13 credit Gateway consists of five courses all focused on a set of common learning out-comes. Although the IDEA is just three days, it’s fun, exciting and often transformative for first-year students. All of the IDEA students are broken into cohorts of approximately 35 students, which they work with throughout the three days. Each cohort is assigned a student, faculty, staff, and alumni mentor who works to support the group throughout the three days and to come up with innovative solutions to real-world problems. Over the course of the program, students are taught the design thinking process, learn about their own strengths and weaknesses, brainstorm solutions to their problem, and eventually proto-type a solution that is presented in front of a panel of judges… all in three days! It’s a lot of work and a lot of fun! Take a look at some of the pictures below that include the project reveal, brainstorming sessions, Design Thinking Bridge Chal-lenge, completed projects and some students still finding time to have fun in the midst of all the hard work.

Nicole Kelly—Class of 2017 Major: International Business with Concentrations in Finance and Chinese When Junior, Nicole Kelly visited Bry-ant for the first time, it was the cold-est and snowiest day you could imag-ine. Despite the blizzard-like condi-tions, Nicole absolutely fell in love with Bryant’s beautiful campus. In addition, she was extremely im-

pressed by Bryant’s International Business Program, and was specifically interested in the Chinese culture and language. Fast forward a few years from that first visit to January 2016. Nicole just returned from a semester abroad in Shanghai, Chi-na. Being back on campus is bittersweet, Nicole says. She considers Bryant her home so it’s good to be back but is so grateful for her experiences during her semester abroad. Nicole took four classes in China, including a Chinese language class and three classes taught in English: modern Chinese his-tory, Chinese economics, and the changing business environ-ment of China. When she wasn’t busy working hard on her studies, Nicole certainly kept busy and took advantage of eve-rything China had to offer. She spent a week of traveling during “Golden Week”, a 7-day national holiday in China which she said was one of her favorite parts about her semester. Visits included Sichuan Province where she saw lots of pandas in the capi-tal of Chengdu and Jiuzhaigau Na-tional Park. She also traveled with other Bryant students to see the Great Wall of China, the Silk Road, Tiananmen Square, and the Gobi Desert where she even got to ride a camel! Nicole loved seeing the countryside of China which was a stark difference from the business-feel of Shanghai and the government-feel of Beijing. Nicole notes that she enjoyed the food in China and the most inter-esting thing she ate was a scorpion! Although Nicole still has a little over a year left at Bryant, she hopes to one day become a financial analyst for a global com-pany since she loved her experience abroad so much and learning about other cultures. She is currently looking at cor-porate finance internship opportunities to take advantage of this upcoming summer. In addition to being a student ambas-sador on campus, Nicole is also a member of Colleges against Cancer, Model UN, the International Business Association and the Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization (CEO).
