Propagation 8 Features

INTERNATIONAL DX Digest @ Gordon Nelson, 19 Irma A~~ Watertown, Mass. 02172

DX conditions here in the northeast have been surprisingly good on several - days i n July; several evenings featured almost w i n t e r l i k e TA receptions between about 2000 and 2330. Page Taylar i n New Jersey and t h e M i t o r i n Massachusetts both noted many TAfs on 7/18 and 7/19; the Europeans were back again even be t t e r on 7/23 and the following two nights. I n addition t o the usual low-latitude Western Europeans sometimes noted during the suprmer, Central Ekwopeans a s f a r t o I. the East as Warsaw-1502 were noted with g o d signals during t h i s p e r i d . The eas ier of the North and West Africans (e.g.. Agadir-935. Sier ra Leone-1205. Conakry-1402) were a l s o aul ib le during the p e r i d . but signals were not par t icular ly outstanding. Aside f ran a tenta t ive logging of Mozambique-737 (under RNE) on July 13th here i n Massachusetts, ac t iv i ty from South and East Africa has been nil. On July 27th the TA's vanished and we began a period of "auroral conditions" featuring enhanced receptions from the South; on 7/28 Taylor reports t h a t many LA'S were heard (including the Peruvian on 8.54) but Dakar was the only TA audible a t all. Richard continues t o experience good reception i n Hawaii. and the New Zealanders likewise report g o d conditions and many loggings of North Americans from a s f a r t o the East as Chicago (WTS-890).

r As those who followed the Apollo 11 f l i g h t on TV probably remember, so lar ac t iv i ty during that time was reported t o be abnormally low f o r s o high a sunspot cycle period: since gewagnetic/auroral ac t iv i ty i s strongly influenced by so la r events. it should be expected t h a t July was an unusually quie t period - and, a s the followinggraph of the Fredericksburg A index of geanagnetic ac t iv i ty shows, indeed it was. The combination of generally low auroral ao t iv i ty during most of the month (compare *he high of 15 on July 13th with June's high af 24 and May's high of 64:) and a period of par t icular quie t beginning the 17th resulted i n a period of unseasonably g o d TA reception on medium-hi~h l a t i tude paths. This run of TA reception was broken by t h e moderateb severe disturbance which began on July 26th; typica l "auroral conditions" then followed.

After f i l t e r i n g out most of t h e het. t h e tape became about 95% readable; the programming consisted of an informal AT-type show MC'ed by a man with a pronounced Brit ish (not Caribbean) accent: t h e s h sign-d off with no I D or anthem; carr ier was cut about 2103:LO. I n an a r t i c l e in NASWA's l a t e s t bulletin. C.N. Stanbury reports t h a t direction finding measurements taken f r m "a West Coast s i t e " with "government owned DF equipent" yielded a hearing which agreed verg closely with those taken by this edi tor f r m New Eneland over a year ago. Our measurements yielded a s e t of bearings which placed the s ta t ion i n the Caribbean or the Caracas area of Venezuela: Stanbury's crossbearings a re reported t o be on the same l i n e a s Bondre. UnfortUMbly, Stanbury ha3 given nei ther the location of b i s DF s i t e or any indication of the s t a t i s t i c a l uncertainty i n the measurement. The "allowing map indicates how well the Stanbuty rosul ts agree with o w e a r l i e r findings; i n addition t o the area defined by our Ilearings (including possible er ror l imi ts) . we've shown the bearings passing through Bnnaire as they would appear a t DF s i t e s i n Washington s t a t e ('W") and Southern California ("SC") - regardless of the "West Coast'' location of Stanbury's DF s i t n , the center bearing w i l l l i e somewhere between these limits. A l l evidence continuno t o point t o Venezuela a s the home of R.L.; a location i n the "ABC Islands" (Arubn, Banaire. & Curacao) has been pretty well ruled out since Fcichard Wood vis i ted those islands and reported tha t reception of Libartad was not of loca l quali ty there. but rather l ike tha t from s ta t ions East of Caracas.

mere i s a common n&stake made by U.S. DX'ers when they speak about a I a t i n American personal name: we've usually observed this e r ro r i n DX bul le t ins (and even i n World Radio TV Handbook) when s ta t ion owners, directors, or verification signers are mentioned. Personal names i n Latin America a re used i n s rather d i f ferent way than i n the U.S. and i t ' s important t o bear these differences i n mind.

Names in the U.S. a re used i n the following way: When a child i s born he receives a given name such a s John or Peter, a middle namo. and h i s fa ther ' s last family name a s a surname: his canplete name w i l l then bo somothine l i k e "John Theodore With", which i s often abbreviated t o "John T.
