Concentrated Bullsheet

Spring has sprung, the grass is ris’ I wonder where the birdies is…….. The birdies are at the Shinks’ house!! If you did not know, I have a passion for birds and the life in my native garden brings in Honey eaters, magpies, rosella and lorikeets. The noise at sun rise wakes me before the alarm goes off. Sitting watching birds I can waste the day away. Not much is getting done at home right now. While we were at Innes there were birds everywhere, I spot-ted a Malleefowl as we drove into the driveway at the hall where we stayed. I excitedly explained to the kids about the elusive bird and Amelia grabbed my camera and stealthily followed it and took some great photos. I am so proud. This edition has a great trip report by Bruce and Dave on the Innes trip, recipes from Helen funny stuff from Sue and Glenn. Thanks for sending stuff in guys, you are a great help. On page 15 is information about the “Fight for the Murray” champagne, including what you can do to help. I know some of our members already have signed petitions, sent mes-sages to Canberra and passed around the “Fight for the Murray” message. I am appealing that we all join the fight for better water quality in our life line. I am hoping to have a speaker address the club at the November meeting, more info to come. Any way, Hope to see you around the traps soon, Cheers Shinksy Front cover pic: The work Team at Shell Beach. Read about the Innes trip on page 8.

Linear park bike ride

It had been many years since I had ridden a bike, you don't forget how to, just how sore your legs can get. The McLean's, Teigesser's, Shinks’, Glenn and Troy, Grace and Paul braved almost 10km of the Linear Park ridding from Felixstow to Tea Tree Gully. We had a couple of stops along the way, looking at the flowing river and some of the spec-tacular houses on the way. We even stopped once to avoid a rain shower. The rain did not put us off though. About three quarters of the way, the little kids and some mums and dads turned around and head back. Some die-hards forged on, but the ride was mostly flat. After-wards the kids played on the nearby playground while the Adults chin wagged and cooked a BBQ lunch. A great day out, thanks Glenn.

Innes National Park Working Bee, 14 / 17 September Paul, Theresa, Amelia, Clare and Matthew Shinks , Helen Manson and Debbie Clements arrived at Stenhouse Bay at about 3.00pm on Friday and David Nankivell and Bruce Mitchell arrived at 5.30pm, just in time for happy hour. A jolly sociable time was had by all, ably supported by a delicious spread of nibbles and washed down by various fluids. On Saturday morning at 9.00am we met the Ranger, Jared who explained the safety issues , outlined

our tasks and Paul collected the trailer and tools. We proceeded to Shell Beach to clear weeds from around the old Stone Water Tank and the Shepherds Hut. We then walked to Shell Beach for a beach clean-up. The most surprising item found was an intact fluro tube. Debbie found it above high water mark, Paul used his ingenuity to use the tube as a monopod to take a group photo. We then visited the Ethel Wreck, one of many dotted along the coast. The Ethel is probably the most famous, as it is easily accessible and visible on the beach from the cliff top. The

recent stormy weather had exposed the wreck to its most visible in eight or so years. The silt is un-predictable and could cover the wreck to its normal exposure in little time. It is a sad reminder of the lives lost along this part of our coast. We had lunch and then proceeded to clean up the fire track. This job was different to the previous fire track clean-ups as we just had to trim the trees and new growth from the track sides after a recent burn off. We finished at about 4.30pm and returned to Stenhouse Bay for, yes, you guessed it “ Happy Hour”. After tea we were entertained by the Shinks Entertainment Group. Amelia and Clare had practised and choreographed a dance and cartwheel routine which was excellent. Later Amelia and Clare treated us to some wonderful singing, encour-aged by their parents. On Sunday morning we travelled to our first roadside work site to remove posts and rails from the roadside as the vegetation had grown enough to stop people driving off the road. The rails were at-tached to the posts with long spikes and proved difficult to remove, but nowhere as difficult as the posts were to extricate from the ground. Paul, Debbie, David, Theresa and Helen worked very hard to get the posts out. Amelia, Clare and Matthew helped where they could. Bruce was relegated to cameraman as he was unwell after clearing the fire track on Saturday. When all the posts and rails were in the trailer we filled in the holes and the little Shinks covered them with leaf litter. Debbie then proceeded to sweep the area with a dead broken branch to remove all traces of our presence. Jared had a hard time finding the spot later. We visited Cape Spencer Lighthouse and were joined for lunch by ranger Jared at the West Cape Lookout picnic shelter. This was a fantastic place for lunch with million dollar views along the coast. After lunch we removed posts & wire from corner of West Cape Rd and the Stenhouse Bay – Pondalowie Bay Rd. The team had worked out the best way to get the posts out was to dig soil from around the post, belt hell out of it and then spear it with the pointy end of the pick, lean back on the pick whilst the other team mem-ber belted the post with the sledge hammer. This worked well until the last post proved too stubborn with the result that the pick handle broke!!. Too many muscles Shinksy !!!! Don’t ever get near Deb-bie if she has a sledge hammer in her hands, because by the way she was belting those posts you would have more than a cuppla bruises !! After the job was done we drove to Pondalowie Bay Camp-

ground and went for another beach cleanup. We found bits of plastic, wood, tins. Amelia found a dead baby Pt.Jackson Shark on the beach with its nose stuck under a rock. (It was about 400mm long) The rock had presumably collapsed on it as it was looking for food. Bruce found a rock that was a good re-semblance of a map of Australia. Mathew had fun running away from the waves along the beach. We were all worn out after walking on the very soft sand so we went back to the Stenhouse Bay Hall. Helen & Theresa went to Marion Bay for drinks, chocolate & other supplies . Jared the ranger joined us & was surprised at the range of goodies we had for happy hour. David proceeded to prepare a stir fry for our dinner. Theresa, Helen & Debbie decided not to have tea & wait for Helen’s pancakes. Paul prepared tea for the children. David made enough stir fry for three, so there was enough for Paul to enjoy too. After tea had settled Helen made pancakes which we had with whipped cream, strawberries and lemon and sugar. Thanks Helen, they were yummy!!!! David got his

banjo out for a practise and was joined by Theresa for a discussion about some of the music and songs. After the children’s bedtime we were entertained by Teresa acting (loudly) as quizmaster trying to test our skills as quiz contestants. The mis-pronunciation of some of the words and many of the answers pro-vided for much entertainment. Some of the questions could end up in a future club quiz, so be warned. Monday morning saw us pack up, clean the hall and say goodbye to the rangers, who thanked us for our help and booked us for next year.

Helen hooked up her caravan and head toward Point Turton for two days of rest and fishing. The Shinks Mob and Debbie went for a look at the historic Inneston Township before heading home. Inneston was a gypsum mining town from 1913 to 1930 and the gypsum was shipped from the Stenhouse Bay Jetty. William Innes discovered gypsum in the area in the early 1900’s. Dave and Bruce headed towards Edithburgh via the dirt coast road. We didn’t see much of the coast, but the road was in good condition, allowing 80-90kph speeds. Just before Edithburgh we came across the Wattle Point Wind Farm. As we had never been up close and personal to the wind turbines before so we went down a road for a look and came across the viewing area. Whilst we were there we were amazed to see two workers on what could be the world’s tallest and definitely scariest cherry picker raise themselves to the centre of the turbine to work on one of the blades!!. Not a job for the faint hearted, especially if it got windy. After a good lunch of fish and chips in Edithburgh we headed back to traffic lights and traffic and home. The Innes National Park is a GREAT place to visit as it has spectacular coastal views, great beaches to explore, surfing, fishing and abundant flora and fauna. The facilities are good but in peak times would be very busy. Spring is good as the wildflowers are out and the weather is cool. The accommodation at Sten-house Bay was excellent and is good for groups of about 30. Other buildings are available for hire and there is bush camping and caravan parks in the area. We are all sorry that we haven’t visited the area sooner or for a long while. Thanks to Paul for organising the trip( but not the mossies) and to every one for a very enjoyable time. Bruce and David

Christmas Dinner at the Genghis Khan Restaurant 17th November

Cost:$21.50 per head

264 Montacute Road Rostrevor Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant is a bustling restaurant that has given diners a glimpse of Mongolian traditional cooking style for nearly 30 years. Fon, the owner and Manager, delights in providing a truly delicious meal cooked right in front of the diner to their exact wishes. Go on, visit the Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant with your club mates and celebrate Christmas and the coming new year The History of Genghis Khan Mongolian Barbeque In the 13th Century, all of East Central Asia was united under the great mogul ruler Genghis Khan. The Mogul Empire was the greatest land conquest in world history. At its height, it stretched from China to the hills of Hungary. All armies, they say, march on their stomach and so it was with Mongolian warriors. Their basic day to day meals were tenderized strips of meat carried under their sad-dles, but it was the Victory Meal that has been passed down today by the descen-dants of these superb warriors. After battles, the Moguls would go hunting with lances, bows and arrows. The meat, quickly frozen by the chilled air on the arid steppes, was sliced thinly and barbecued on their shields of war. Slender branches from trees were used to toss the food - a kind of Mongolian chopstick, this superb culinary concept has now arrived in Adelaide in a very pure form. Conqueror’s Grill The war shield is now a standardized round plate but are still true to the original shape and metal. Giant Chopsticks The small branches are now elongated chopsticks used by our chef.

Trailer hitch failure

Picture A Picture B To all Stewardships and Partnerships Group staff, volunteers and Friends’ groups

DETAILS: Recently a member of the CLLMM team was towing a trailer when the ball mount (Picture A) pulled out of the hitch receiver, leaving the trailer connected with only the backup chains. The subsequent investigation indicated that the pin and clip mechanism (Picture B) used to hold this connection in place had failed. To avoid this type of incident occurring again it is recommended that: The DEWNR ‘Trailer Use’ Safe Work Practice is followed diligently when operating/using a trailer for Departmental work. Visual checks are made of all couplings and hitches to determine the coupling pin is in place and se-cured firmly by the clip before attaching the trailer. An amendment to the procedure listed in the ‘Trailer Use’ Safe Work Practice document has been

recommended, but in the meantime please ensure that you carryout this procedure.
