BSC 307 5-E Model Lesson Plan Title: Meiosis & Mitosis Grade Level: 9 th grade Objectives: TSWBAT: Identify the multiple steps within meiosis and mitosis. Discuss meiosis and mitosis. Differentiate between meiosis and mitosis. Illinois Learning Standards: Stage H. 12A 2: Apply scientific inquiries or technological designs to correlate the basis of cellular and organism reproductive processes, correlating possible genetic combinations to the type of reproductive process, diagramming and comparing mitotic and meiotic cell division, or distinguishing asexual and sexual (egg, sperm and zygote formation) reproduction with examples. Engagement: Students will watch a video on meiosis for six minutes. This video shows the steps of meiosis in such a way that students will be more likely to remember the steps. Students will be asked to generate three questions they have regarding meiosis. Exploration: Students will be paired up with another student. Students will be given a handout containing questions that pertain to meiosis and mitosis. They will be directed to use – website and their textbooks to find information on both meiosis and mitosis and compare and contrast the two processes. Students will also answer the three questions they had generated previously.

Title: Meiosis & Mitosis Grade Level: 9th grade

Objectives: TSWBAT:Identify the multiple steps within meiosis and mitosis.Discuss meiosis and mitosis.Differentiate between meiosis and mitosis.

Illinois Learning Standards:

Stage H.

Explanation: The class as a whole will come back and discuss what they found. During this time the students will facilitate the discussion with any misconceptions corrected by the teacher. At this time the teacher will have the website in which the students looked up the information and make sure that students understand the steps and how this website coincides with the given handout.

Elaboration: Students are to go back to their groups and will be given a series of questions. The questions will reflect how meiosis and mitosis relates to everyday life and what may happen if they were to malfunction. Time permitting the students would then have a discussion on the answers to their questions.

Evaluation(Assessment Strategies): Students will be evaluated by their participation in the discussion during the “Explanation” and possible “elaboration” phase. They also would be evaluated on the answers they provided on the worksheet during the “exploration” and “elaboration” phases.Rationale: Instead of lecturing this complex topic and using a typical meiosis video to explain the concept, this lesson starts with a video that the students can relate to more so and helps to motivate them to investigate the topic further. Also the use of the website that allows them to visualize the steps of meiosis and mitosis makes it easier for the students to visualize the steps associated with the two processes. This lesson corresponds with ILS Stage H 12A 2 in that they are exploring the processes of both meiosis and mitosis as well as defining the differences among them.Resources:
