Course in Depth

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will be introduced to the essentials ofaccounting such as preparing financial statements andmanagement information, as well as gaining an overviewof key management theories. You will study subjectsimportant to all modern organisations such as economicsfor accountants, mathematics and statistics, and applyingIT skills (basic and advanced ECDL) to accounting andfinancial management situations, as well as starting todevelop your own entrepreneurial skills.

Year 2 builds on the techniques and knowledge gained inYear 1 and introduces advanced skills of financialreporting and management accounting. Computerisedaccounting information systems provide you with moreadvanced IT uses of Sage in accounting and financialmanagement. You will also study law for accountants anddevelop research skills before choosing between twowork experience modules - work-based learningor graduate enterprise.

In Year 3 you will develop skills in increasingly complexaccounting and financial management techniques,including financial accounting, management accounting,auditing and assurance, taxation and financialmanagement. You will also have the chance to undertakea dissertation in accounting and financial management.

How will I study?

You will study through lectures, workshops and tutorials,group exercises and on the job learning while on yourwork placement. You will also have the opportunity tolearn from external business professionals who areinvited to teach occasional sessions.

Work-based learning involves a period working in anexternal company which allows you to put your learninginto practice. As well as developing your skills and futurelearning processes, you will have the opportunity to buildrelationships with potential employers and gain vitalexperience for your CV.

How will I be assessed?

We will assess your vocational capability, academiccritical thinking and intellectual development throughoutthe course. Coursework, case studies, problem-solvingexercises and exams may be used and you may beassessed individually or in a group.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by highly qualified, experienced andenthusiastic academics, including professionally qualifiedaccountants, who research and regularly engage withinthe wider business and academic environment. Staff areencouraged to specialise in particular subjects so you willbenefit from a wide range of knowledge and experience.

You will discover how to extend the trial balance to produce the required information to generate thefinal accounts, consisting of a statement of financial position and a statement of comprehensive income. Furthermore,you will develop the accounting skills required for the adjustment of accounts for accruals, bad debts, bad debtprovision and VAT. The module produces accounts for a sole proprietor, partnership and introduces the notion ofaccounting for incorporated business.

ACC3012: Auditing and AssurAuditing and Assuranceance (20 credits)Auditing and AssurAuditing and Assuranceance is a key skill and an important undertaking for professional accountants. This module willintroduce auditing and assurance and develop the skills involved in the audit process. You will be required to evaluateyour newly acquired skills and develop a critical approach to the application of those skills to the professionalenvironment. You will be encouraged to examine legislation and apply the principles to audit strategies. A wide rangeof transferable and intellectual skills will be delivered and assessed to allow you to gain confidence and the appropriateemployability skills for the business environment.

ACC3013: TTaxationaxation (20 credits)TTaxationaxation develops tax computation skills and also provides more complex tax scenarios. You will gain technical skillsrelating to taxation, including the tax computations for individuals, sole traders, partnerships and incorporatedcompanies. The module will guide you in how to calculate capital allowances, capital gains tax computations and valueadded tax and requires you to undertake tax planning that draws on several areas of tax legislation. You will investigatenew opportunities to reduce tax liabilities, challenge the notion of contemporary fiscal management and debateinnovative applications of tax computation and the development of tax avoidance schemes.

ACC3014: Financial ManagementFinancial Management (20 credits)Financial ManagementFinancial Management will develop a critical understanding of the importance of a sound financial basis within anorganisation. The module will look at the capital structure of organisations and the various means whereby anorganisation can (further) capitalise its operations. Discussions will centre on how capital is best managed, the cost ofcapital, and the theoretical and practical advantages and disadvantages of different sources and ratios of various typesof capital. You will also examine the workings of the stock market and consider the requirements of investors in suchmatters as dividend policy, share options and directors' salaries. Quantifying techniques are also explored, with themodule looking at risk analysis, investment returns and business valuation.

ACC3015: Dissertation in Accounting and Financial ManagementDissertation in Accounting and Financial Management (20 credits)Dissertation in Accounting and Financial ManagementDissertation in Accounting and Financial Management offers you the opportunity to further develop your academicinterest in a chosen area of study. The research project enables you to undertake a largely independent academic pieceof research, supported by a project tutor, lectures and workshops.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. Entry Requirements

120 UCAS Tariff points, for which no specific subjects arerequired, plus GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or Grade 4or above (or equivalent).

This degree is closely aligned with the requirements ofthe main accountancy bodies in England and Wales asfollows:

• The Association of Chartered CertifiedAccountants – nine ACCA papers;

• The Chartered Institute of ManagementAccountants – five CIMA papers;

• Institute of Chartered Accountants in England andWales – seven ICAEW papers;

• The Association of International Accountants – tenAIA papers;

• The Chartered Institute of Public Finance andAccountancy – six CIPFA papers;

• Certified Public Accountants Australia – twelveCPA papers;

• Certified Public Accountants Association UK –Associate CPAA membership;

• The Association of Accounting Technician – fullAAT membership.

The programme allows you to apply for exemptions fromthe professional examinations of these bodies to gainaccountant status as quickly as possible. You could enteraccountancy or general business in the public orprivate sectors.

How can I enhance my employability?

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2017/18, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2017/18 are £11,575 perannum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.
