Aggregate is a collection of physical disk space

One aggregate comprises one or more RAID disk groups.

Each aggregate has multiple logical volumes called Flexvolumes

The aggregate capacity is shared by the Flexvolumes defined over the aggregate

IBM System Storage N series Overview

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a conversational protocol used to transfer files from an N series running Data ONTAP to a client/user over TCP/IP

It can transfer simple text files and convert between different native formats, such as from a Windows text format to a UNIX text format, or it can transfer raw binary data, such as programs and graphical images.

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is the foundation protocol of the World Wide Web. It sets the rules for exchanges between browser and server. It provides for the transfer of hypertext and hypermedia, for recognition of file types, and other functions.

N series supports HTTP and transfer files from an N series running Data ONTAP to a client/user over TCP/IP

A Snapshot copy is a frozen, read-only view of a data volume that provides for easy recovery of files and directories

Snapshot copies consume less storage space, since only changes to the active file system are written

Instantaneous Backup of NAS and SAN data

Restores of either large files or entire flexible volume

255 Snapshots per FlexVol (499 FlexVol’s per N series)

Drag and drop restore of user files – significant reduction in RTO and RPO

No performance impact in keeping multiple online SnapShots

FlexClone® Writable Copies

Application development often requires primary storage space for test operations such as platform and upgrade rollouts

FlexClone improves storage efficiency for applications that need temporary, writable copies of data volumes

Creates a virtual “clone” copy of the primary dataset and stores only the data changes between parent volume and clone

Multiple clones are easily created

Can help to save space up to80% or more

MultiStore – N series partitioning

MultiStore allows to create individual logical partitions

Multistore divides a Nseries into multiple secure partitions called vFiler™ units

A vFiler unit consists of

o data stored in volumes

o IP address(es)

o network configuration necessary to reach the vFiler unit

o security and other attributes associated with the data

Prevents different departments accessing or finding other virtual storage partitions within the single Appliance or Gateway they all share.

Helps prevent information on any virtual partition from being viewed, used or downloaded by unauthorized users.

SyncMirror

Synchronous local mirroring from one volume to another volume attached to the same controller

There are two types of Aggregates (Mirrored or Unmirrored)

Mirrored aggregate adds a second layer of redundancy

One N series owns both plexes on mirrored aggregate

It writes to both plexes from NVRAM.

Provides for instant failover in the event that one

plex fails for any reason

Can tolerate multiple simultaneous disk failures

across the RAID groups

It is a local resilience for storagePlex is a collection of RAID groups

Designed to allow optimized usage in database environments

Add, delete, map, unmap, and mirror virtual disks (LUNs) online.

Virtualized “local” disk to Windows® servers (FCP or

iSCSI) Storage managed by SnapDrive logically appears to come from a locally attached storage subsystem.

Allow administrators to easily create virtual disks from pools of storage

Expands capacity on-the-fly with no impact to application or system performance.
