ONE OF THE NATION’S BESTThe Huskies have been one of the most successful programs in not only the PSAC and the region but the nation over the past decade-plus. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, only three Division II teams have more victories than Bloomsburg’s 132.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

}1 - The Huskies young offensive line, with three new starters this year, has allowed just one sack yet this season through three games totaling five yards. Bloomsburg leads the PSAC in sacks allowed and is one of six teams in the country to allow one sack or fewer.

}7 - Bloomsburg has won seven consecutive road games.

}20 - The Huskies have totaled 20 or more points in seven straight games and 28 of the past 29.

}23-4 - Quarterback Tim Kelly now has a career record of 23-4 as the Huskies starter.

}24 - Number of consecutive victories for Bloomsburg over Cheyney.

}27 - Eddie Mateo enters the week tied for sixth all-time in Huskies rushing touchdowns with 27. His next rushing score will break a tie with Mike Ceroli (2001-04) with Mike Johnson’s 33 up next.

}38.7 - Bloomsburg is averaging under 39 yards of penalties per game, a total which leads the PSAC and ranks 14th in Division II.

}81.2% - The Huskies have converted on 81.2 percent of their red zone trips this year (13 of 16), scoring nine touchdowns and four field goals. All of the team’s touchdowns in the red zone have been on the ground. BLOOMSBURG HEAD COACH PAUL DARRAGH• Named 2013 PSAC East Coach of the Year• Compiled best record of any first-year head coach in Bloomsburg program history in 2013 (10-2)• Entering 18th year on Huskies coaching staff• The Huskies have a .767 winning percent-age since Darragh joined the coaching staff in 1997• For a complete bio, see page 13

Just over six minutes later, Quiteh caught a 36-yard pass from Tim Kelly for a 14-0 lead. Three more touchdown runs - one by Kelly and two by Quiteh - gave the Huskies a commanding lead before the halftime intermission.

Bloomsburg ran for 282 yards and finished with 447 yards of total offense on the day.

PRESEASON RANKINGSThe Huskies were nationally-ranked in a number of preseason polls. Bloomsburg ranks No. 24 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 and No. 25 in the D2Football.com poll. The Huskies also stood No. 17 in The Sporting News preseason Top 25 and were slotted No. 23 by Lindy’s Sports.

RANKED AGAINNational recognition among the Division II pollsters is nothing new for the Huskies. With their Top 25 rankings this season, Bloomsburg has now been ranked in at least one national Top 25 poll since the 2000 season.

The Huskies have been ranked in every AFCA Top 25 since October 11, 2010 – a span of 48 consecutive polls.

LUCKY SEVENWeek 1’s win at Stonehill marked the seventh time in head coach Paul Darragh’s head coaching tenure that the Huskies have allowed 14 points or less.

MOVIN’ ON UPBloomsburg jumped forward in both national NCAA Division II polls this week, advancing one spot to No. 12 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 and also one place to No. 13 in the D2Football.com poll.

ELLIOTT PACES THE NATIONSophomore return man Lawrence Elliott Jr. has continued to shine this season after taking second team All-PSAC East honors last year as a true freshman. Elliott amassed 97 all-purpose yards in Week 2 vs. Cal and posted 147 Week 3 at Mercyhurst including a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown, the second of his career. His first punt return for a touchdown came at home vs. Millersville on Oct. 12, 2013 (73 yards).

His 26.0 yards per punt return this season is the best in the nation, surpassing the 25.5 average of Mary’s Elby Pope which ranks second. Next highest in the PSAC is Colin Kimball of Mercyhurst at 13.6.

SHIRK STILL IMPRESSIVE IN RETURNSenior tri-captain Justin Shirk was forced to sit out the Week 3 game at Mercyhurst because of a “targeting” helmet-to-helmet penalty levied late in the Week 2 game vs. Cal. He returned in Week 4 vs. Shippensburg and immediately made his presence felt, forcing a first quarter fumble that would result in a touchdown for the Huskies defense. He finished with 15 tackles and four for loss with his 15 stops being one off a career high of 16 set last year at West Chester. He was honored as PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week for his efforts.

Despite playing just three games thus far, Shirk remains one of the PSAC and national leaders in multiple categories. Shirk ranks among the PSAC leaders in sacks (five, tied first); tackles for loss (8.0, first); fumbles forced (two, tied third) and tackles (36, tied eighth). Nationally, he is second in sacks per game at 1.67, behind only Joshua Gordon of Minnesota State-Mankato (1.75) and also second in tackles for loss per game (2.7) behind Southwest Oklahoma’s Devin Benton (3.0).

HUSKIES RUN TOTALS SLIP VS SHIPThe Huskies finished with 123 yards of total rushing vs. Shippensburg in Week 4, a mark which was the lowest since last year’s game vs. the Raiders when Bloomsburg totaled 106 yards. Bloomsburg did continue its streak of games with at least 100 yards rushing as a team to 36 straight games. The last time BU did not reach 100 yards rushing was on Sept. 15, 2011 at IUP (76 yards). Also vs. Shippensburg in Week 4, the Huskies did not have a 100-yard rusher for the first time since the 2013 Shippensburg game when Franklyn Quiteh led the way with 82 yards rushing. This year vs. Shippensburg, Dai’Shon Munger paced the Huskies with 56 yards rushing. That total was the lowest for a lead BU rusher since Quiteh finished with 43 yards rushing vs. IUP in 2011.

MCFADDEN ARRIVESD. J. McFadden arrived on the scene in a big way Week 4 vs. Shippensburg, finishing with four catches for 127 yards including two big plays which directly led to Huskies touchdowns, highlighted by a 49-yard catch. McFadden now leads Bloomsburg in receiving yards with 147 on the year. He transferred to Bloomsburg from Orange Coast College prior to this season, after leading OCC with 36 catches for 774 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 21.5 yards per catch in 2013. Justin Shirk won the honor for the second time this year this past week with 15 tackles and two sacks vs. Shippensburg.

Last week, senior cornerback DJ Robinson earns the honor after his interception return for a touchdown gave the Huskies a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Senior defensive tackle Shawn Mitchell earned the accolades this week after playing a key role in two crucial turnovers forced by the Huskies defense. Mitchell picked up an interception on the first play of overtime which set up BU for the game-winning field goal. He also recorded a fumble recovery which set up a Huskies third quarter scoring drive.

In Week 1, senior linebacker Justin Shirk fin-ished with nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack. Five of his tackles were solo stops.

He had a hand in two crucial turnovers as the Huskies were able to rally in the second half and pull away for a 24-7 non-conference victory.

by Bloomsburg coaches originally out of Abington High School – but as a basketball player after he averaged 21.3 points, 10 rebounds and six assists per game on the hardwood as a high school player before opting to play football in college.

STARTING SLOWThe Huskies have been outscored 13-7 in the first quarter this season and have watched opponents score first in all four games thus far. Bloomsburg has outscored its opposition in every other quarter, including dominating the second quarter by outscoring opponents 49-21 during the second period.

OPPONENT BUTTERFINGERSBloomsburg has done an excellent job of forcing fumbles this season as opponents have committed 12 fumbles, losing 10 thus far.

MATEO CLIMBS THE CHARTSWith his third straight 100-yard outing, a 117-yard performance at Mercyhurst in Week 3, Eddie Mateo passed Tom Martin (1985-87; 2,476 yards) for ninth place in Huskies career rushing yardage all-time. Arrastene Henry (1998-2001) is next in line at 2,665 yards. Mateo enters Week 5 needing 49 yards to move into eighth place.

Seven players have rushed for 3,000 or more yards in a Huskies uniform.

CLOSING THE DEALThe Huskies are 12-0 under head coach Paul Darragh when leading at halftime and 13-0 when leading after three quarters.

IN ELITE COMPANYThe run of success for the Huskies over the past 15 years is nearly unparalleled in college football. Bloomsburg has won seven or more games in 15 consecutive seasons – a streak that is impressive at any level. Only four schools in the divisions of NCAA (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III) have a longer streak of seven or more victories – Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; Northwest Missouri in Division II and Mount Union in Division III. The 15-year streak is also a PSAC record, surpassing the previous mark of 13 straight years set by IUP from 1984-1996.

TAKING THE STAIRS TO THE ENDZONEDylan Stair recovered a fumble during the first quarter of the Huskies’ 38-30 win over Shippensburg and ran 17 yards for the touchdown after Justin Shirk had forced Shippensburg running back Blair Brooks to fumble behind the line of scrimmage. It was the first fumble return for a touchdown by the Huskies since Sept. 15, 2012 when Tony David recovered a fumble in the end zone during a 44-37 win at home over Kutztown. outube.com/watch?v=O8IjyohQnRQ&feature=yoTAKING IT TO THE HOUSEBloomsburg had three touchdowns from defense and special teams in its 38-22 win at Mercyhurst in Week 3. That total represented a tie for the most touchdowns on returns in a single game over the last 20 years. Bloomsburg had three interceptions returned for touchdowns in a 50-39 win over East Stroudsburg on Oct. 31, 1998. The last time Bloomsburg had two interceptions returned for a score in the same game was Oct. 11, 2003, a 50-7 win vs. Millersville.

RECORD-SETTING 2013The 2013 season was one for the record books in terms of offense for the Huskies. Bloomsburg finished the year with the most points scored in school history (474) and the most-ever yards of total offense (5,895). The Huskies also compiled 11 30-point games and recorded 500 or more yards of total offense eight times in 2013, both school records. The Huskies also ran for 350+ yards in a game six times last year, breaking the old record of four set in 2004.

BUCKING THE TRENDWhile much of football has shifted to a pass-happy offensive attack, the Huskies are finding more success than ever with their tried and true rushing game. Bloomsburg has posted the top two rushing seasons in PSAC history back-to-back – 2012 (3,789 yards) and 2013 (3,762 yards). Bloomsburg averaged 313.5 yards per game on the ground last fall.

HUSKIES IN THE NFLBloomsburg currently has three players on NFL rosters as of Week 5.

Jahri Evans (‘06) continues to be a stalwart at right tackle for the New Orleans Saints, again serving as a starter in front of quarterback Drew Brees. Evans, a fourth round pick of the Saints in 2006, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and considered one of the NFL’s best at his position. In 2011 he was named as one of the 100 Greatest Players in the NFL and won a Super Bowl ring with the Saints in 2009.

Defensive end Larry Webster became the second-highest NFL Draft pick in school history this past May when he was selected in the fourth round (136th overall) by the Detroit Lions. He had 13.5 sacks in 2012 and 12.5 in 2013 for the Huskies. Webster made the Lions’ 53-man roster and was active for the first time in Week 3 but did not play.

Matt Feiler, who like Webster was an All-American for the Huskies in 2013, was signed as a free agent following the draft by the Houston Texans. Feiler, an offensive tackle, is currently a member of the Texans’ practice squad.

#UNLEASHED WEEK 5 • AT CHEYNEY

LABADIE HAS DAY TO REMEMBERRedshirt freshman defensive tackle Bill LaBadie likely won’t soon forget the Week 3 win at Mercyhurst as the first-year player recorded his first career interception and made the most of it, returning it 41 yards for a touchdown. The play sparked a span of three turnovers generated in less than three minutes as the Huskies rallied from a 14-0 deficit.

ROBINSON’S HOUSE CALLSenior cornerback DJ Robinson picked off Mercyhurst quarterback Brendan Boylan in Week 3 and returned the interception 48 yards for a touchdown, the second interception return for a touchdown of his career and a personal longest. His first INT return for a score came in the 2012 season opener at Stonehill and spanned 28 yards. In all Robinson has three touchdown returns at BU, also adding a 70-yard punt return for a score on Sept. 24, 2011 vs. Millersville.

RIGHT WHERE THEY WANT THEMThere has been a common theme in all four games this season – Bloomsburg has battled back from an early deficit to win the first four contests. At Stonehill, Bloomsburg trailed 7-0 early and 7-3 late in the third before rallying for a 24-7 win. Against Cal, the Vulcans led 3-0 until the final seconds before halftime. At Mercyhurst, the Lakers led 14-0 in the second quarter before the Huskies battled back to lead 18-14 at intermission. Shippensburg also lead 3-0 before Bloomsburg pulled ahead late in the first quarter.

Bloomsburg has scored just seven points in the first quarter this year and has not scored a first quarter offensive touchdown through four weeks.

THE TREND CONTINUESThe Huskies have scored 14 or more points in 52 straight games, a school record. The previous high was 33 straight from 1994-97.

HUSKIES WORK OVERTIMEBloomsburg needed overtime to defeat California, 24-21, in Week 2. Needing an extra period has been a rarity for the Huskies in recent years - the Cal win was the first overtime game for Bloomsburg since a 10-7 loss in OT vs. Gannon at home in 2009. Bloomsburg’s last overtime win at home before Week 2 was a 35-28 victory at home over Kutztown in 2003. BU also played an OT game at East Stroudsburg in 2005, a 31-24 win for the Huskies.

HITTING THE CENTURY MARKBloomsburg’s run defense has been strong against opponents in recent seasons. Just one player rushed for over 100 yards against the Huskies in 2013 - Rondell White of West Chester in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. White also ran for 100+ yards against the Huskies in 2012. Brandon Brown-Dukes of Mercyhurst joined White in the two-man 100-yard rusher group vs. BU the past two years when he finished with 102 yards on 23 carries in Week 3 this fall.

ROOKIES DEBUT UP FRONTThe Huskies had a different look than in previous years when they debuted Week 1 at Stonehill as three players made their first collegiate starts on the offensive line. Christian Whiteside (LG), Nick Reed (RG) and John Garland (RT) all started for the first time, helping pave the way for the Huskies to finish with 211 yards rushing and the line also did not allow a sack.

FINLEY MAKES MOST OF OPPORTUNITYDamin Finley made the most of his first career start in Week 1 at Stonehill. Starting in place of senior D.J. Robinson at cornerback, Finley caused two turnovers – first he delivered a forced fumble and fumble recovery on the first play from scrimmage by the Skyhawks. Later in the first quarter, he made a nifty tip and interception on a deep ball attempt from Stonehill. He finished the game with a career-high seven tackles.

WINNING VS. THE WESTBloomsburg has been dominant in PSAC crossover contests over the past 15 years. Since 1999, the Huskies are 45-14 vs. PSAC West teams and are 24-5 against Western foes at Redman Stadium.

THIS TIME THEY COUNTUnder new rules adopted by the PSAC for this season in all sports, all mandated conference matchups will count toward divisional standings.

As such, the Huskies PSAC crossover contests against Western Division members California (PA) and Mercyhurst will go toward BU’s PSAC East standings. The lone exception will be the final week of the season - the PSAC slate ends the season with a week of crossovers including the PSAC Championship Game, but those games will not count toward the divisional standings as the title game will be set following the penultimate week of the season.

ROAD SUCCESSThe Huskies have not been afraid of travel in recent years, posting a 25-7 record away from home since 2009 (.781). Bloomsburg won all five of its road games last season and have won seven consecutive regular season road games dating to 2012.

GROUND AND POUNDThe Huskies have had at least 30 rushing attempts in 52 straight games, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009 - a record that nearly was broken in Week 9 of 2013 when Bloomsburg ran exactly 30 times vs. Shippensburg and again in Week 3 of 2014 when the Huskies once again rushed exactly 30 times at Mercyhurst, a 38-22 win.

RUNNING TO DAYLIGHTEntering this week’s game, Bloomsburg has an on-going streak of 36 straight games with at least one rushing touchdown – the last time the Huskies failed to run for a score came on Sept. 15, 2011 at IUP.

PUTTING UP THE POINTSThe Huskies are 107-3 when scoring 40 points all-time. Bloomsburg tied the school record of seven games with 40+points in 2013 (2005, 2007, 2012, 2013).

NOTHING LIKE THE FIRST TIMEFullbacks rarely get a spot in the limelight, often serving as unsung heroes, especially in the Huskies run-oriented offensive attack. Fifth-year senior fullback Brody Myers got his chance to shine in Week 1 at Stonehill, rumbling for a five-yard touchdown. The touchdown run was the first of Myers’ career, not only at BU but was also his first-ever scoring run including his high school career. Myers has stepped into the starting role for the Huskies this season.

CAPTAIN SHIRKRedshirt senior Justin Shirk is in his second season as a captain for the Huskies and is the unquestioned leader of the defense. After shifting to middle linebacker for last year, he responded with the third-most tackles in BU single season history (123). A former two-sport star in maroon and gold, Shirk won the 2012 NCAA Division II national javelin championship to become the first national champion in men’s track and field in school history.

FROM THE ARCHIVESBy Bloomsburg University Archivist

Bob Dunkelberger

The 38 points scored on Saturday marked the first time in program history a Bloomsburg football team has scored that many points in consecutive games and the first time in 1030 games that a contest ended with a score of 38-30. It was the fourth time in the past two seasons and sixth time in the last four the Huskies have scored 38 points in a single contest. Bloomsburg has scored 20 or more points in seven consecutive games, 28 of the past 29, 37 of 39, and 48 of the last 51 games. The Huskies have won their first four games for the fourth consecutive season and 18th time in program history. The team ended up with a winning record in all previous years. Bloomsburg has posted a winning record in 19 of the past 20 seasons and 24 of the last 30. The Huskies have won seven consecutive road games, the most since 12 straight victories between losses at West Chester in 2007 and 2009. The upcoming game with Cheyney is the 55th in the series between the two schools, dating back to the first meeting in 1960. Bloomsburg’s record in the previous 54 games is 44-9-1, with a mark of 22-5 at home and 22-4-1 on the road. The Huskies have beaten the Wolves 24 consecutive times and 15 straight at Cheyney, both school records against a single opponent. The last Bloomsburg loss was at home in 1989 and last loss on the road to the Wolves was in 1982 by a score of 24-20.

Paul DarraghH E A D C O A C H • S E C O N D S E A S O NPaul Darragh was named head coach of Bloomsburg University on Dec. 6, 2013 after being ap-pointed as interim head coach in February 2013. Overall he will be starting his 18th season with the Huskies in 2014.

During the 2013 season Darragh led the Huskies to a 10-2 record, a PSAC championship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs as part of the strongest season for any first-year head coach in school history. Following the season he was honored as PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year.

Under Darragh’s leadership, the Huskies had four All-Americans including Harlon Hill Award-winning running back Franklyn Quiteh who was honored as the top player in Division II. Blooms-burg also had national finalists for the Cliff Harris Award (top small school defensive player, Larry Webster), Gene Upshaw Award (lineman of the year, Brian Clarke) and Fred Mitchell Award (top place-kicker, Danny Fisher). Following the season, defensive end Larry Webster became the sixth player in Bloomsburg history to be selected in the NFL Draft as he was picked in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions.

Darragh previously served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for 16 years under legendary head coach Danny Hale. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons.

The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Overall under Darragh’s leader-ship, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season.

Darragh has also coached 58 first team All-PSAC performers, 11 All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010). Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987-89. From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordi-nator at Gannon.

He moved from Gannon to the defensive coordinator post at William Paterson College before join-ing the IUP staff. A three-year starter and captain for Temple, he graduated in 1985 after earning All-East honors as an inside linebacker. Darragh lives in Orangeville with his wife Yelena and are the parents of Sasha, 26, and Lemuel, 24, both graduates of Bloomsburg University, and Gabriel, 13.
