Ministry Reports
“Peace be with you!”
This winter, the amount of flurries is not as usual we might accumulate much more than we used to do. Recently, we had another surprise snowfall, and most our neighbours again came out to shovel. A lady, who is always positive,
spoke out with a smile, “I love it, giving away!”
I answered, “You are right! This winter is teaching us how to give away. We should give away without reluctance like we do now.” Her positive attitude helped me to think of the Snow Mountains as blessing mountains. An individual snowflake on the ground piles up the way blessings will also pile up in our world when we give away freely with loving hearts.
God blesses us through many people. Despite heavy accumulations of snow and consistently frigid temperatures, many giving hands have come together to keep the sidewalks, the parking lots and the frequently used areas clear of snow and ice to their best of their ability. Their care helps make our lives easier and safer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you!” all for cleaning the snow around the Church, the community and the city.
We exchange greetings very often on many different occasions. To send one of our friends or family members to their eternal home in God is not easy, saying “Good bye”. My family has been struggling with the way life unfolds. One of my closest family members whose body failed under multiple cancers, went back home in God. She touched many people’s lives and showed what Christianity is. There are several families, who lost their loved ones in our community, too. First of all, I express my most sincere condolences to those families. Second of all, I on behalf of my family say, “Thank you for your condolences, your kind words, your sincere prayers and your loving care in 2013!”
Now, we have to continue. God provides us all with the ability to live through the difficult things and rediscover Him all over again. May God enliven and comfort all those who are distressed and struggling with illness. May God enable us to meet and get through all of life’s difficulties and find a peaceful mind through that communion in God.
Our God is the God of Peace. The Son of God is the Prince of Peace. The Spirit of adoption is a Spirit of Peace. Beginning the service we always share “Peace be with you!” recognizing that before we approach God with our gifts we must be at peace, with God and with each other, so we share the Peace. By reaching out to others we do good to ourselves, when we find others, we find ourselves, when we lose ourselves in others, we find ourselves (Matthew 10:39). So when troublesome thoughts arise, pray them away, and hand them to God. Our God has broad shoulders, then choose the Way of God. You will find your real self living in the peace of Christ. It is the very Christian Beauty never to be withered. With all that in mind my ministry included such things as the following activities:

Blessings, Yun-Hee
It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was preparing my last annual report for Bridgeport, but yet another year has come and gone here at Bridgeport! This year presented BUC with some unique challenges to both our ministry and operations. Through these challenges, I hope that they have served to help strengthen our community here at BUC. At the beginning of the year our Minister Yun-Hee Noh-Perry went on
disability leave. While this did present us with ministerial challenges, we were blessed to have such competent ministers like John Lawson come in and help guide BUC. A huge thank you is to be extended to Chris Beaumont who came in and filled in for the bulk of time and challenged us in our operations and in our faith. Also during this past year a special thank you is necessary for Debra McGill from Presbytery, she is the co-chair for pastoral relations and has been graciously attending out Board meetings, providing guidance and assistance whenever needed. This year again our congregation was involved in the Ride for Refuge. Once again this was a big success both within our church and to the greater community. This is definitely a great outreach opportunity for BUC and ties into the United Church’s efforts towards social justice and activism. What a great event and great work done by all of the BUC Riders!! At the start of last year we as a Board made some challenging changes to our operational side of BUC. With our decreasing membership, several committees and groups were merged into new headings within BUC. While I know that some people were upset with changes, they were necessary as we were too far stretched and instead of doing a few things for our community well, we were doing too many

things and not executing them as well as could have been done to their potential. By focusing in on a few events, initiatives this was much better off for the volunteers and BUC got a much better return on investment. The changes that we have started at the Board and operations here at BUC come during an exciting and challenging time within the United Church or Canada. I will say that we are ahead of the curve within the UCC, but it is much easier to make changes with more effect at the local level than that of the National level. The UCC is looking at streamlining their own operations; removing wasteful layers of bureaucracy that I personally feel have held back the UCC. These changes will allow the churches and the UCC to get back to what their real purpose is, the ministry! Going forward some of these proposed changes will most definitely challenge many people within BUC & UCC. The structure of the UCC is changing, for far too long the UCC and BUC has been a static church that exists to perpetuate structures and beliefs that served us well in the past. Here is now a chance for renewal, growth and change. In closing, I would like to extend special recognition to 3 exceptional people within out congregation for all of their efforts to keep Bridgeport going. That is not to say that any of our volunteers are not appreciated, it is that these 3 ladies definitely go beyond the normal call of duty for a volunteer and I personally felt it necessary to give them special recognition: Dianne Schildroth, Sue Schmidt and Heather Sundin. Once again it has been my pleasure

SPIRITUALITY COMMITTEE
Chairperson: Rev. Yun- Hee Noh-Perry Clerk of Session: Sue Schmitt(10-14) Elders: Heather Sundin(05-14),Audrey Thomas(11-14),Cindy Koehn(12-14)
The Spirituality Committee combines Session, Worship, Library and Christian Education. The Session “Elders” consists of full members of Bridgeport United Church.
A huge “thank-you needs to be extended to all those who hosted fellowship after the Sunday service. It is important for all of us to have this social time for fellowship. If you are willing to host coffee for one Sunday, please contact Rev. Yun-Hee Noh-Perry or an Elder.
Our congregation has again seen changes in 2013, and Session plays a role in many of those changes in approving baptisms, reaffirmations of faith, marriages and transfers. We wish well to those who have transferred out of our congregation to new churches and express our condolences to those who have lost loved ones. We are truly blessed by all those who have led our worship services during the year, individuals, families and committees.
One of our most important missions as Elders is to maintain relationships with our congregation by phone calls, delivering newsletters or chatting with members on Sunday mornings. If you feel lonely or

are in need of a visit, please contact Rev. Yun-Hee Noh-Perry or your elder and they will arrange a visit as soon as possible.
Our minister Rev. Yun-Hee Noh-Perry was on medical leave from Jan – June 2013. Thank you to Rev Debra McGill who has been attending our spirituality and board meetings as our Pastoral Charge Supervisor in Yun-Hee’s absence as well as her transition back to us. She has been a very compassionate support person. There is never a question too big or too small for her to answer.
We asked Rev. Chris Beaumont, John Lawson, Elizabeth and Peter Moffet, David Cooke, and our committee’s to lead worship.
Rev. Chris Beaumont was asked to be our weekend Supply minister to lead worship. Because he also was ½ time at another church he was required there every 4 Sunday. For this time he visited active and inactive families on our roll largely concentrating on those over 40. The Spirituality Committee has used his summary of findings to reach out and contact our members regarding their status. We are continuing to update our content and Roll.
We were saddened by the resignation of Pat, our Music Minister in June. April Brien, Elizabeth Heinmiller, Chris Bramble, Andrew Van Bruchem, Jay have helped us out on the organ and piano.
We were sadden when Herb Quickfall passed away as he was an elder who did a lot of visiting and will be tremendously missed
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry continues. We have given out over 33 shawls to people in need.
We are celebrating communion the first Sunday of the month usually by intinction.
We use the Whole People of God Curriculum downstairs and supplement it with Seasons of the Spirit Fusion upstairs.
Ushering is being organized by Keith Schmitt. If you wish to usher one Sunday please see Keith. He would more than welcome some company at the back of the sanctuary.
On Father’s day flowers were given to the Dad’s while the Mission and Service committee served up Dogs for Dad for a BBQ lunch. Rev. Yun-Hee also treated us to Korean Ribs.
Our Vacation Bible School ran a ½ day program again successfully from August 19 – 23. We visited a
number of countries, wore different colors and celebrated VBS "Everywhere FUN FAIR where
GOD'SWORLD comes together"
Rally Sunday and picnic was held Sept 22 at the Sundin’s.
The Thanksgiving Food Drive on Oct 13 and 20, taking the food to the Waterloo Region Food Bank.
On October 15 we hosted the Community of Churches meeting. Many wonderful ideas emerged and many connections between churches were forged.

John Lawson was our 135th Anniversary Speaker on Nov 3 (during the potluck we showed the Historical Pictures)
An Advent Adult Bible Study began Oct 25 for 5 weeks.
In addition to our regular Christmas Services (Tree Decorating, White Gift, Blue Christmas) we also hosted a Community Christmas Carol Hymn Sing Dec 18.
The Christmas Pageant had our children and teachers running around posing and taking pictures. Christmas Story was shaped into a power point presentation with narration. Unfortunately the day to be shown was cancelled due to weather so the congregation will get this treat following the annual meeting.
Thank you to those who donated to the penny fund. The money is being used for the renovations in the Fellowship room. A special thank you to Lisa, Andrew, Helen, Barb, Cindy, Sarah, Max and Emma for their hard work in peeling paper, cleaning and painting. Thank you to the UCW for purchasing the new light fixtures and Keith for installing them.
Rev. Debra McGill led us through the Comprehensive Review, a series of questions to begin a conversation about the future of The United Church of Canada. Through the work of the Comprehensive Review Task Group, the church is exploring new ways of being faithful in a rapidly changing time and society. Add your voice. Visit www.unitedfuture.ca to join and share in conversation offering your hopes, fears, dreams and visions.
Thank you again, the Bridgeport United Church community for your support in 2013.

We applied and received a government grant (Enabling Accessibility Fund, Small Component from the HRSDC (Human Resources and Skills Development Canada) ) We have a wonderful accessible washroom thanks
to Brock and his team at CHART and the project management of Keith Schmitt.
The Fellowship room has under gone redecorating – thus far the walls have been striped and painted, (thank you to Lisa, Sarah, Barb, Cindy, Sue and Andrew) radiators fixed (thanks to Keith and friends) the lights replaced (by Keith Schmitt) and the furniture rearranged. This is a continuing project.
Jack Watson did a fantastic job with spring cleanup. Summer maintenance of our grounds were handled very nicely by Dianne, Russell, Connie, Jack and Keith. Jack and Keith tackled the outside fall cleanup as well and did an outstanding job. Gord Kaster has been great at keeping out parking lots clear of snow, and Clare Pomeroy, Keith Schmitt, Andrew Van Bruchem, Robert Smith, Yun-Hee have pitched in on the sidewalks time and time again.
Keith has done an excellent job this year regulating the heat for the church. There were a few bumps but by in large we have been a lot warmer and it has been a lot colder outside.
We are investigating sharing our space with two congregations, New Creation Reformed Presbyterian church and the Foursquare Gospel denomination.
We share our facilities with Sparks and The Bridgeport Community Centre`s Tai Chi class on a regular basis. We also have rented to a Ringette Group who need a spot to rest between tournament games, A CMHA Workshop, and a birthday party. This year we also shared with mice and ants which we dealt with as best we could. Presently they are all hibernating I am sure.
Our parking lot is home to 3 people year round and 2 additional in the warmer months.
Thank you to all the countless activities that have been done by the wonderful people of BUC that go unnoticed in action but keep our church family building beau-tiful and operating, through fellowship and our spiritual journey together.

Yun-Hee went on medical leave for six months. Jan 13 – June 16, 2013. Her ½ time appointment was approved in January by Presbytery. Debra McGill became our Congregational Supervisor to help guide us through this time.
Pulpit Supply was organized – Chris Beaumont was hired as weekend supply for 3 services a month and visitation, John Lawson, Elizabeth and Peter Moffatt, David Cooke, and our committee’s filled in when needed.
Our caregiver Cheryl De Slegte resigned January 20th, 2013. She was not replaced. We have had volunteers in the nursery when available and needed.
We decided in June not to renew our secretaries contract (Jeanette Den Otter) in the fall and to spread the work she was doing to volunteers. Heather and Dianne have divided most of these responsibilities.
We accepted with regret the resignation of Pat Caya our Minister of Music in June. April Brien and Elizabeth Heinmiller have been filling in primarily with Chris Bramble, Andrew Van Bruchem and Jay Cha filling in the gaps.
Evaluations were distributed in December to the congregation and Minister to help with planning for our future.

Once again 2013 was busy for BUC Youth Group. We met when we could, and had
our Family Pot Lucks. In March the Youth Group helped with March Break VBS, with
fun had by all. Easter had the Youth Participating and making breakfast for our
Sunrise Service and breakfast. In the spring we went trampolining. We also went to
Canada's Wonderland, with fun had by all, even though it was freezing that day! We
have not met since September, since Youth and Leaders have been busy. Thanks to everyone who

The UCM had their Barbeque at the Quickfall Farm on Friday 8th
November 2013. It was attended by about 14 men. Although it was a
cold night, the huge bonfire made it quite tolerable. It was our first
barbeque without Herb. We certainly missed him and will, no doubt,
continue to miss Herb for a long time to come. Herb was so much part
of who we were.
We had our usual Men’s Breakfast meeting a few weeks before and the attendance was average.
We donated $300.00 to the BUC General Fund.
In 2013 we had several other Men’s Breakfast Meetings. We had quite good attendances. It was and is, always our wish that all of the men at the Breakfasts, stayed for the service. This was always the way. Even 30 years ago, when we had about 30 at the Men’s Breakfasts only about 60% came later to the service.
It was always Herb and I telling the same stories and "jokes". (Mostly Herb). After 30 years of the same material (and food) we should have been an easy "act" to follow.
The UCM at Bridgeport was and is one of the Mysteries of Life.
Herbs’ passing was a real cloud on our year. We will remember Herb his contribution and his many tall stories.

Our Purpose To invite the Women of the congregation for the total Mission of the Church and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness study fellowship and service.
The year started with our January meeting thinking of past members who made impressions on our lives and setting up our annual schedule. Our February meeting started with "Saints", who do you think is a Saint? We enjoyed Hearts, prizes and lunch. In March we had a wonderful time at our Mardi Gras meeting, constructing floats, masks and enjoying delicious Kings cake. Our April meeting had an Easter theme, after Devotions we made favours for Spring Banquet. Teddy Bears picnic was our Banquet theme and included a Silent Auction for the Church. Shirley Hunsberger brought over 100 of her Teddy Bears. Others told interesting stories about their teddy bears. Dinner included Ham and Scalloped Potatoes, jellied salads, coleslaw, cupcakes and ice cream. A cool June 4th had our picnic indoors at the Koehns. We enjoyed pot luck and an evening of games. Our Hobby Auction and Pot Luck were enjoyed in September and raised $331.00. Rev Yun Hee did Devotions and presented a very informative discussion on the "Attitude" of Gratitude and that we give thanks to God at this time of Thanksgiving, in October. In November Betty did Devotions, talking about Vimy Ridge in 1917 and wars back to before Christ. We enjoyed singing Maple Leaf Forever. Yvonne provided delicious broken glass dessert. At the Bazaar we made around $250 serving soup, sandwiches, drinks and dessert. December being Christmas Sue focused on a "baby shower for Jesus". Our guest singer Moira favoured us with three beautiful songs, one she wrote herself. Another year has come and gone. With everyone's continued support we again gave $1200 to our Church Missions and once again supported Monica Place. Submitted by UCW President Bonnie Koehn

At the 2012 Annual Meeting we decided to trial a new committee structure and review at the
next annual meeting. Changes have been made as the year has progressed. For instance we
did not have enough volunteers for a Stewardship Committee; therefore this committee became
part of the board.
Some committees are mandated by the United Church to be in place such as the Trustees and
Ministry and Personnel.
The Official Board normally approves nominations and appointments for the following positions.
Those names in bold are newly appointed to be approved. Please note that there are still
vacancies on committees. If you are willing to share your time and talents with one of the
committees, please talk to a member of the Nominating Committee. The needed positions are
