Mission Statement
Advancing sewing as an
art and life skill
Message from the President
Happy New Year! In this New Year, I am looking
forward to getting to know everyone a little better and
our becoming a much closer ASG Chapter.
Our first CAB (Chapter Advisory Board) meeting will
be held before our regularly scheduled chapter meeting
and you are encouraged to attend. The CAB meeting
will be at 5 pm on January 22. The regularly
scheduled chapter meeting will be immediately
afterward at 6:30. We still are in the planning stages of
this new ASG Chapter, and your help and input would
be greatly appreciated. Also, please consider
volunteering to serve on the CAB.
We have a great program planned for January.
Debbie Fleming has graciously offered to give us a class
on how to make mobeus scarves. Bring your machine
and go home with one or two finished scarves. You can
be one of the first to have a gift or two ready for
Christmas 2014 giving. St. Peter’s does have an
elevator near the entrance making it easy for us to help
you bring your machines to the meeting room.
Also, don’t forget to bring your sew and tell to our
meeting. For me, that is one of the highlights of each
meeting. It is amazing how talented you ladies are.
Looking forward to seeing all of you at our first
meeting of 2014.
Happy Sewing,
Marcy

News: Fashion group continues to work on perfecting the patterns and fitting for each member’s sewing
projects. Debbie Busch has been very helpful with making sure there are no “drag or frown lines in the
muslins sewn by the individual members.
Jean attempted to use the “duck tape” method of “copying a pattern” from one of her favorite pieces of
clothing. Jean said that it wasn’t as easy as it was promised but may use the template to compare her
different muslin patterns.
Members will each construct a muslin or a “practice” article of clothing from one of their patterns for
the next meting. Next meeting will be February 21st at TOT, 10am. March meeting will be held on 3/21/14.
Future meetings will include topics for future meetings, including a demonstration on how important
proportion is in deciding the length of jackets, slacks and skirts. Proportion also needs to be taken into
account when deciding on pattern design.
All members, interested in any aspect of fashion sewing are welcome to come, participate or just
observe. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact Jean – 773-2214 or [email protected].

Neighborhood Group news about Community Service Projects:
The Rockin’ Bobbins Neighborhood Group has been very busy this past fall. We had two community service projects for the Buffalo/Niagara Chapter of the ASG. The first one was headed up by Donna Kathke and was for U*S*S*S* (United Stockings Sailors Soldiers) a Lockport based organization that collects Christmas stockings to be sent to military fighting for our country. This year we collected 145 stockings and baskets full of items to be placed in the stockings. The ladies of the Buffalo/Niagara Chapter were very generous in supplying the necessities for this so needed service. Many of the people who place themselves in harm’s way to protect our country have no one to send them gifts of any kind. The Santas, who distribute the stockings when they arrive at their foreign destination, have been selected by names that were collected locally. Thank you to all the ladies who helped make the 2013 U*S*S* S* a success – especially thank you to Donna Kathke for heading up this project. Our second community service project was the collection of dog blankets and beds to be distributed to Pixie Mamas Dog Rescue of Buffalo New York. This project was headed by Kathy Dublinski and dropped off by Toni Mertel. All together the group had 68 blankets and beds. Pixie Mamas were delightfully acceptable and so appreciative of the hard work that went into making the final products. This has been a cold start to the winter here in Western New York – so each of these came in very handy and much needed. I am happy to report that the Rockin’ Bobbins and the Buffalo Niagara Chapter committed to over 170 reported hours and many more that were not reported to me on these two great community services. Thank you, ladies for your generosity.

Sewing Tips of the Month
When your machine is not stitching properly, think TNT: thread, needle, tension.
Rethread the entire path, top and bottom first. Then switch to a new needle. Finally, adjust the tension. It is
probably one of those 3 things, unless something is really broken.
Be sure to keep an album with pictures of your projects before you give them away.
Take pictures or video of your equipment and inventory your stash. Save receipts and check with your
insurance agent to assure you are covered.
Keep those zippered plastic bags your sheets and blankets come in. They are great for keeping a project
together as well as a traveling sewing/notions bag. The clear plastic makes it easy to spot a notion.
Remember to press not iron for most of your sewing projects.
Try removing a scorch mark by rubbing lightly with vinegar and wipe dry with a clean cloth

Community Service
Giving back is a vital part of a full and rewarding life. What could be more fulfilling than doing what you love to do
(sewing) while contributing to the quality of life of others in need within your own community? Throughout the country,
ASG has become synonymous with charitable acts of sewing.

Here is a great opportunity for the “budding” sewists in your family.
Design Your Dream Prom Dress Contest
Can you picture the perfect prom dress for yourself or your friends and wish that you could see it in the
stores? Aspiring young fashion designers between the age of 14 -22 have a unique opportunity to learn, via
online webinars what it takes to design a dream prom dress and get it to market. No previous design
training or sewing experience is required! You will learn design considerations, fabric choices,
manufacturing and pricing. Then you will use this information to create a design and enter it in the Design
Your Dream Prom Dress contest. Judges from Attitude Couture, an exclusive label collection of special
occasion wear and the American Sewing Guild will choose five finalists based on originality, technique,
marketability and quality. Then, the community will vote for their favorite to win.
If your dress is chosen as the winner, the design will be sent to the factory of Attitude Couture and produced
for the 2015 Prom Collection. The winning design will be featured in Attitude Couture’s 2015 Prom
Collection. The lucky winner will also accompany Attitude Couture to New York market in the Fall of
2014 (expenses paid).
The contest is open to anyone aged 14 to 22. Must be a U.S. resident. Entries will be accepted between
October 15, 2013 and April 15, 2014. A $25 entry fee includes access to a series of on-line classes about
designing the entry, Q&A sessions with an Attitude Couture representative, access to the complete online
library of ASG sewing Webinars and videos and a one-year Junior membership in the American Sewing
Guild. The entry fee is waived for current ASG Junior members.
********************************************************************** Pinterest – Craftsy – Online classes – Blogs - Social Network
These are just a few of the changes in our society: a way to learn, a way to
communicate, a way to spend hours on a computer or other technical devise. In order to
keep up with the times, we need to change our language, our toys, and especially our skills.
Pinterest is a great way to get inspiration for crafters. You can communicate, blog, or
take a visual tour. You can upload, download, bookmark with pins, and learn almost any
craft and see any number of tutorials.
In the June 2013 issue of the Buffalo Stitches, Amy Kirst did a piece on “Pinterest 101”.
Mary Beth DiPaola will do a demo at our meeting in February on “How to navigate in
Pinterest”. She is now going to continue to explore the site and take us along!!

A Jaunt to Pinterest with Mary Beth DiPaola Pinterest has been so inspirational for my crafting and sewing addiction. This is a neat little number I
found on one of my many jaunts to Pinterest.
The pin led me to a cute little blog named littlebitfunky. Crystal is a blogger whose posts include “what I
made for Monday (recipes), “20 minute crafter”, and “40 ideas/activities for kids”. Crystal’s blog also has
an online shop and sells patterns, handmade items and a personal creation she has named hohos. Crystal
describes herself in her blog as, “Just your run of the mill stay at home/work at home/mom/wife/proverbs
31/wonder woman wanna be. Living my life to bring Him praise. Failing, falling, learning and growing
every day.” She has been blogging since 2007.
Her personal creation – the hoho – has a unique informational section that answers some important FAQ’s.
Here are a few from the blog:
WHAT IS A HOHO?
Well, a few years ago now, I was shopping with my littlest son. He went nuts over some soft minky fabric
and I bought a yard because he loved it so much. I sat down at my machine and came up with a completely
original and unique creation. The pattern has evolved a bit over time as I have perfected it but overall it has
remained the same. Since creating them all those years ago, Hohos have gone to live with big and little
children all over the world! Hohos are just happy little monsters who love who they are!
WHY ARE THEY SO WONKY? We live in a world that expects perfection and attaches self-worth to that perfection. And that is an
impossible standard to live up to. The mission of the Hoho is to let kids (big and little) know that YOU
DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT TO BE LOVEABLE!! Each and every Hoho is unique and special, just
like their owner. They are purposefully wonky, a little imperfect and 100% one of a kind, there is not
another like your Hoho in the world just like there is not another YOU anywhere in the world!
A very interesting question posted within the FAQ’s is a question of whether or not a person can copy the
pattern and make one of their own. Here is her answer, “well that depends...do you like being a jerk who
steals from others and likes to make me cry? Because that is what happens when you use my pattern to
make "your own" Hohos. I have thousands of people looking out for me so if you choose to steal from me,
you can bet I will find out. Besides, it's just not nice to take something that doesn't belong to you, right? My
pattern is copyright protected and I am serious about defending what is mine. Just because it's online,
doesn't make it up for grabs for you to use. I have rights and I am fully aware of them.”
We all know the problems and issues of stealing in the sewing and crafting world and I give her kudos for
make a statement.
The chapstick cozy is a pattern that is provided for free under
the “20 minute crafter” blog. There are other patterns that are
creative and inspiring and the website is worth taking a look
at. Enjoy!
