building careers in innovation

Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division is a major industry player with
application, production, and customer centers spanning the globe. This
not only sounds impressive but has very real consequences. Within our
organization, people have to interact with each other across departmental
lines and national borders, day in and day out. That means if things are
to go smoothly, our employees must be able to rely on each other
to meet whatever challenges today’s business environment presents
them with.
Fortunately, Atlas Copco has a strong tradition of professional development
– something which I’ve experienced first-hand. I began my career here as an
apprentice draftsman – while I was still completing my studies in mechanical
engineering. To this day, I tell students to make contact with the business
community as soon as they can. I know how much I benefited from the
hands-on experience and the mentoring provided by those who could teach
me more.
At Atlas Copco Gas and Process, we know what it takes to do an outstanding
job. We also know that technology and the market are constantly changing,
which is why we offer ongoing professional training to all our employees.
After all, the only way we can grow is if our people do.
Best regards,
Peter Wagner

generate revenues of over 7 billion euros each year.
Our employees work hard to secure the company’s

A Partner That Engineers the Future
Our Company Values
Atlas Copco has been included on Forbes magazine’s
list of the world’s 100 most innovative companies.
But what makes the Gas and Process Division such a
respected leader?
First of all, it’s our superior products. After decades of experience, we have
the know-how to carry out the highly complex engineering processes needed
to manufacture first-in-class equipment and tools. Thanks to their outstanding
quality, our products ensure maximum reliability, operational efficiency,
and cost-effectiveness. We strive for product perfection to maximize our
customers’ potential in their respective markets. Of course, the best thank-you
a company can receive is when its customers come back again and again,
and ours do.
Next in line, there’s our focus on innovation. Continuous reviews enable us
to upgrade existing products and develop new ones. We interact closely with
our customers to better understand their changing needs. In the case of both
standardized and customized equipment, we continually strive to make the
improvements that often end up becoming industry best practices.
We continuously work with customers to ensure equipment and processes keep running smoothly.
Making customer productivity happen: a geothermal plant in the US.
7
Serving Our Customers Responsibly
It’s not just what we make, however. It’s how we make
it. We structure our work processes to be as efficient as
possible, saving time and money both in-house and for
the companies we serve.
From sales and production to aftermarket care, we
coordinate our global efforts in a way that meets
customer needs every step of the way. And in working
effectively, we not only want to do the best job possible.
We also want to do it responsibly.
Honored for Sustainability
To that end, we are very proud that Atlas Copco has been
selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability
World Index and the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe
Index. Based on an assessment of industry peers, the
indexes show investors which companies are committed
to sustainable development.
Atlas Copco was chosen for this honor based on a number
of its publicly stated goals, including improving customers’
energy efficiency by 20% by 2020, reducing CO2 emissions
by 20% over the same time period and enforcing a
zero-tolerance policy regarding bribery and corruption.
Atlas Copco’s promise to its customers
is “Sustainable Productivity”
Atlas Copco makes good on this promise by
never losing sight of its company values:

• Innovation

Our Global Perspective
A Global Player Fit for TomorrowFrom its beginnings in Cologne, Germany, the Atlas Copco Gas and Process
Division has steadily grown into a global player, with sales and service offices
in two dozen countries. A testament to our know-how, customers in more
than 150 countries now rely on our market-leading products.
Formerly known as Energas, the Gas and Process Division was acquired
by Atlas Copco in 1984. This event helped to create a can-do mindset at
the company, allowing it to make a name for itself among its competitors.
“When everybody else thought they couldn’t handle a project, we were
the ones who did it,” recalls one employee.
Since then, the division has expanded both organically and through strategic
acquisitions, such as the purchase of Mafi-Trench, a U.S.-based manufacturer
of hydrocarbon turboexpanders.
Product innovation is a key driver of our business – now and in the future.
9
Our Global Perspective
Shanghai: A Doorway
In another forward-looking move, the division opened
a new turbomachinery production facility in Shanghai,
which has allowed it to break new ground in China, a
key growth market and doorway to the Far East.
As Stephan Kuhn, Business Area President of Atlas Copco
Compressor Technique, puts it: “The new plant will
also enable us to cultivate the vast potential of the
Asian market and be closer to our many customers in
the region.”
In addition to China, Atlas Copco Gas and Process has
targeted the other rapidly expanding BRIC countries
through a number of strategic moves, including the
expansion of the division’s presence in India and its
on-site teams in Russia and Brazil.
As these selected examples show, our cross-border
growth not only makes the company’s employees part
of an international team, it also provides them with
opportunities to work in a number of countries and
participate in the latest global innovations as they occur.
Be it expansion turbines for geothermal plants in Turkey
or centrifugal gas compressors for power-generation
sites in Saudi Arabia: At the Gas and Process Division,
we’re steadily increasing our presence in growth markets
around the world.
For our employees, that means direct, hands-on
experience in today’s dynamic global economy.
A global team, working together.

Our Development Philosophy
Maintaining close communication with his team: President Peter Wagner.
An Employer That Invests In Its PeopleEach Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division employee
has the opportunity to grow – as a professional,
and as a person.
We believe it takes competent and committed people
to achieve our company’s business-strategy goals. All
employees contribute by applying themselves – not only
to their own aligned performance targets, but also to
group and divisional objectives. Therefore, each position
we offer has to reflect an individual’s competence in
terms of knowledge, experience, and personality.
We offer our employees a lot of freedom, which also
means a high level of accountability. To support them
in their responsibility of reaching their career and
personal-development goals, our managers’ role includes
various coaching activities.
Helping You Learn
Atlas Copco Gas and Process values personal development
and seeks to train each employee according to his or
her individual needs. To reach this goal, the division offers
training, coaching, mentoring, and a chance to learn on
the job.
We are happy to also provide a wide array of internal
training programs in which our experts share their
knowledge. Through annual review of competence
development, we aim to ensure continuous growth in
employees’ competences and opportunities.

Getting a Strong Start
Professional Development
Opportunities for Students
Gaining experience as an intern or working student is a
great opportunity to meet potential colleagues and to get
a better understanding of an industry. It’s also a chance
to acquire international and intercultural experiences that
are crucial in the business life of today.
Atlas Copco offers internships, working-student
opportunities, and the possibility of completing a
Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis across all of our departments
worldwide, such as Engineering, Manufacturing,
Sourcing, Marketing, Project Management, Finance,
or Research & Development.

or international assignment, don’t hesitate to apply.
Opportunities for Graduates and Professionals
We offer employees not only a challenging working
environment with a high degree of responsibility
from the outset, but also a welcoming and professional
environment that allows them to thrive.
Investing in people development and supporting our
employees at every station of their chosen career path
is a key part of our business philosophy. We believe
that internal mobility across countries and divisions
adds value to our employees’ professional lives, so we
offer a variety of national and international projects and
vacancies in our internal job market.
We aim to recruit about 85% of our managers internally,
a reflection of our company culture and the high level
of motivation and engagement among our employees.

Professional Development
The Gas and Process Division’s custom-designed turbines
and turbocompressors require extensive knowledge of
mechanics, thermo- and aero-dynamics, as well as
experience with fundamental business processes and
functions.
We promote many employees into conventional
management positions. At the same time, we also
offer our engineers and technicians the opportunity
to follow careers as technical experts, and to assume
specialized staff positions.
Training Tailored to Your Goals

retaining a hands-on approach to their core competencies.
This means they can contribute their expertise, working
closely on technical issues, processes and products
while still adhering to a career path at parity with a
management role – both in terms of reward and position.
Whichever pathway, you can expect ongoing training and
development initiatives tailored to your own targets and
motivations, and across various locations worldwide.
The different positions, and the career flexibility they
bring, need to be clearly reflected in our organizational
structure. This is an ongoing challenge, but also one that
is vital if we are to continue attracting the best talent in
a global knowledge market.
We know the advantages of positioning ourselves as
an attractive employer, and we continue to go the extra
mile to be ‘first in mind, first in choice’ with students,
graduates, and career professionals.
Building Your Gas and Process CareerAtlas Copco offers a broad range of career paths and opportunities. Many
of our employees come from a technical background, and we understand

Careers in Focus
Time has really flown by since I started my career with
Atlas Copco Comptec LLC in 2001. After my graduation
in industrial engineering, I worked in the south of the
U.S. as a Process and Quality Engineer in the automotive
sector. At that time, I wanted to pursue a position in my
hometown of Albany, NY. Friends of mine were working
at Comptec and recommended the company as a good
employer.
I began working as a Purchasing Specialist and was
mainly tasked with sourcing vendors and improving the
bottom line of our products. I traveled globally, especially
in Europe and Asia. I’m glad to have been a part of this
international and intercultural business relationship
and have gained valuable experience during this time.
Interaction and Coordination
The next step in my Atlas Copco Gas and Process career
brought me closer to the production process, which had
always been my intention. Since 2008, I have been the
Unit Assembly Team Leader, responsible for 40 employees
working in two shifts.
I appreciate the interaction and teamwork with other
departments, which are crucial in this position. In my
daily business, I’m occupied with the coordination of
our engineering team and the handling of our customer
requests and manufacturing needs.
Team Spirit
I also communicate with our purchasing department to
get material on-site and manage the day-to-day activities
of my team. I always try to be a fair leader, and I expect
my employees to act according to the team’s spirit and
goals, and to keep the requirements and expectations of
customers as one of their top priorities.
As an employer, the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division
has given me various opportunities to grow. My next step
will come at the end of the year, when I move to a Project
Manager position. I’ll be acting as a face and voice of the
company to our customers. I’m really looking forward to
this new and challenging opportunity.

Norbert Schmied,
Manager Operating Equipment,
Atlas Copco Energas GmbH
Cologne, Germany
A few months ago, I began the interesting and newly created position of
Operating Equipment Manager, tasked with the improvement of customer
satisfaction. I’m responsible for resolving the difficult technical issues that
arise on-site, reporting directly to the Vice President, Research & Development.
I am the contact person for our customers during the life of a project, which
will typically run between three months and several years. I recruit an internal
team to support me on a project-by-project basis. Compared to my previous
position of Project Manager, I am more deeply involved in the technical side,
working on the special clarifications of our products.
Lessons Learned
I deal with both internal and external partners, carry out analyses, report to
customers, and perform technical investigations. One of the most important
aspects of my work is to continuously follow up on “lessons learned.” The
technical-site feedback from equipment in operation safeguards the ongoing
improvement and development of our products.
Although I don’t compile any management reports, I am responsible for the
different project teams and get good support from the various internal
departments. We receive positive feedback from customers, which motivates
and encourages me.

I joined Atlas Copco Gas and Process in 2010 as a Site
Support Engineer, after 16 years working in the Chinese
compressor market. The first year after graduation,
I worked as an assembler; I was the only woman.
Afterwards, I gained experience in project and process
management. In my current position, my main task is
the coordination of the various departments that support
Site Engineering, such as Project Management, Design,
and Purchasing.
Intercultural Exposure
My job is extremely interesting, and each day brings
new challenges – which is the way I like it. The work
has taken me to Germany for training, where I received
great help and advice from colleagues, and I’ll be
traveling to the U.S. at the end of the year. This means
that on top of my technical development, I’m also
gaining intercultural skills and international exposure.
I’ve had tremendous opportunity to grow through my
work at Atlas Copco Gas and Process, and I firmly believe
that success comes from attitude. If you invest your time
and hard work, you can get anything you want out of

directly after finishing my studies. As a Commissioning

With this experience under my belt, I decided to work for
the Service Support department in Cologne. This position
maintained the intercultural working environment I was
used to, and I really enjoyed the variety of tasks it
entailed. We had a close working relationship with our
customer centers, offering immediate support to our
teams of service technicians and undertaking the
challenging analysis of machinery-related problems.
Trust, Support, Teamwork
Earlier this year, I was promoted to Team Leader, Service

I spend more time delegating, but I’m still involved in

I experienced a very different culture, structure, and company size.
Working as an Application Engineer, I handled my own projects and

We covered a broad range of activities and held both commercial and

Productivity Leadership
Three years ago, I was nominated for an Atlas Copco High
Potential program. This improved my leadership and soft
skills while providing great opportunities for networking
and exchanging ideas and experiences with colleagues
from different departments. It has also been a lot of fun!
Earlier this year, I was promoted to Team Leader,
Application Engineering, taking over the management
of a team of six colleagues. My daily tasks have changed,
as I spend more time overseeing and delegating projects.
I still get to travel a lot and retain responsibility for
my own projects, for example the implementation and
roll-out of a quotation-software program.
Training and Seminars
In the fall of 2011, I was based in Antwerp, Belgium, for
three months, joining an international training program
hosted and run by our Compressor Technique business
area. Besides various training seminars, there is a
mentoring program, and I’ll be working on projects for
a different division. This experience should broaden
my knowledge and understanding of the division, and
I’m really looking forward to it.
As I said, there’s no such thing as routine

In 2007 and 2009, I traveled to Cologne for training

Careers in Focus
After studying mechanical engineering, I joined a trainee
program at a multinational company in the automotive
sector. This was where I gained my first experience
of working abroad. After several years, I followed my
intention to change industries by applying for the position
of Process Manager at Atlas Copco Energas in Cologne.
I was attracted by the high levels of responsibility – and
the impressive oil and gas turbines and compressors.
Building Teams
In my position, I’m tasked with the optimization of internal
processes and with assessing new investments for our
production facility. The choice of machine is important
because it actively influences our own technology.
The challenge of my job is to combine technical issues,
cost structures, and economic forecasts to generate
pre- and post-acquisition calculations that help in the
decision-making process. In order to handle the flow of
projects, I was able to hire three engineers and build
my own team.
Strategic Thinking
I would define our role as an internal-service supplier,
coordinating the interaction between departments such
as Research & Development, Planning, Construction,
Manufacturing, and Programming. We are also becoming
more and more involved in processes that affect the
other companies in the division. The result: Our work
is becoming ever more global, and it requires strategic
thinking.
I appreciate working at the Atlas Copco Gas and Process
Division because of the career opportunities, the
transparent communication of our leadership culture,
and the future-oriented and sustainable way of thinking.

Quniy Feng,
Project Manager,
Atlas Copco Process Equipment Co., Ltd.
Shanghai, China
Experience Abroad
In 2007, I was offered the opportunity to move to Cologne
to work at the Gas and Process Division as a Project
Engineer. It wasn’t easy for me to leave my friends and
family back in China, but I knew the experience abroad
would provide an excellent chance to develop my career
and to grow personally.
Atlas Copco provided a language course, and my
colleagues helped me with my written and spoken
German. After two years in Cologne, I took up the
position of Project Manager at our new company
in Shanghai.
I always try to communicate with my team in an
open and honest way and encourage them to be
innovative and creative.

Careers in Focus
I learned about Atlas Copco as a potential employer
during my studies in construction design. Fellow students
had completed apprenticeships at the company, and
they convinced me to apply for a position on completion
of my studies in 2008.
Starting Out
I began working for a team in the Construction department
responsible for Core Unit Engineering at Atlas Copco
Energas in Cologne. The job involved making drafts,
calculations, and drawings of machinery. After two years,
I felt ready to take on my career and applied for a position
in Mechanics.
Personal Development
What I enjoy most about my new job is the cooperation
between the different departments across the world. I
also enjoy writing my own software-calculation programs.
All in all, I can say that working at the Atlas Copco Gas
and Process Division is the best thing that could have
happened to me. The products are very interesting, and
the working conditions are great, with a lot of health
and sporting activities and regular career and personal
development programs.

A Welcoming CultureI began working at the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division just a few
months ago, and I’ve taken on a lot of responsibility right from the start. As
a Project Engineer, I communicate with customers, vendors, and suppliers
and am responsible for project scheduling, technical documentation, and
for machine localization in China. The most challenging aspect of my job
was to understand a new market and to familiarize myself with the various
compressors and turbines and the specifics of customized design.
Experiencing New Sectors
I learned about our products and about the division while training at our sister
company in Voorheesville, NY. This was a great experience from both a career
and a personal perspective, and I’m now in regular contact with project teams
across the world. I’m already feeling at home at Atlas Copco Gas and Process.
I enjoy the culture, which is open and friendly. The work is interesting, and I
feel valued and supported by my colleagues.

A Culture That Spans Oceans
“A global company with a culture of innovation and motivation.”
Stephanie Merz,
Human Resources Development,
Atlas Copco Energas GmbH

As a student, I dreamed of doing an internship abroad. I applied to
Atlas Copco because it’s an international employer with opportunities
worldwide. I was lucky to be offered a three-month internship in Australia.
From the beginning, I was given a lot of responsibility and worked on
various projects that gave me real insight into the various aspects of
human resources. The working atmosphere and company culture were
really positive, and after graduating back in Germany, I applied for a
Human Resources Development vacancy with the Gas and Process Division
in my hometown of Cologne.
An International Atmosphere
I’ve now been working at the division for a year and am enjoying the
responsibility and the wide range of activities that make up my day. From
my experience, I’ve seen that despite intercultural differences the unique
atmosphere and company culture of Atlas Copco survives across oceans.

I gained my first experience of working abroad during my studies - as an intern
in Australia. Since then, I always wanted to build international travel into
my career. Atlas Copco Gas and Process gave me that opportunity with my
first management position, as a Project Manager in China.
I began my career as a Project Engineer in 2006. The job meant that I
frequently traveled to Asia, and I really appreciated the social exchange
with colleagues and the introduction to a new culture.
The management position at our young company in China was a big challenge
for me. I had to lead a team of new colleagues while integrating myself
in a very different culture. I try to suit my management style to that culture,
structuring the work within the team, but also allowing its members the
space and freedom they need to do their work.
Building Close Relationships
I focus on teamwork and building close relationships because it’s by acting
together that we’ll be successful. The biggest challenge I face on a day-to-day
basis is the speed of market growth, which means that we are handling a lot
of projects and need to prioritize, so we don’t lose focus on our targets.
I was accompanied to China by my girlfriend, who also found a job out here.
I’m grateful to Atlas Copco Gas and Process for the opportunity, and I’m also
very proud of her. After our time abroad, we’re stronger than ever. Personally
and professionally, it’s been an amazing experience.

I have recently relocated to the divisional headquarters
in Cologne to learn the Atlas Copco way of doing things
with regards to Project Management. This is my first
visit to Germany. I will stay for six months of training
before moving to Shanghai, China, to join the Project
Management team. A lot of challenging projects and
intercultural adventures lie ahead of me – and I’m really
looking forward to them.
An Intercultural Posting
After my graduation in electrical engineering and
subsequent work experience in the controls field,
I decided to enroll in a full-time MBA program at the
University of California in San Diego (UCSD). I saw
this as a very positive way to develop my career in a
broader perspective. After graduation, a headhunter
brought me to Mafi-Trench in Santa Maria, California.
The company had just been acquired by Atlas Copco,
and the integration was still in progress. I worked as a
Control and Instrumentation Engineer, part of a team of
four. We had a lot of internal interaction with Mechanical,
Purchasing, Project Management, and the workshop.
Atlas Copco Gas and Process encouraged the team
ethos of working closely together with each department
through open and honest communication.
Personal Growth
In line with my MBA class, I spent a week in Beijing
and was really fascinated by the Chinese culture and
the dynamic market growth. My experience there, and
the fact that I had already started to learn Mandarin,
moved me to apply for a project assignment in China.
I’m excited about joining the team there.
I see the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division as
an employer that always takes the welfare of its
employees into consideration. It shows commitment
and responsibility and shares my own perspective of
learning and growing continuously.

Growing in the Division
Peter Wagner developed his career
from apprentice to Divisional President.
Here, he explains how he did it.
My appointment as President of the Gas and Process Division has obviously
brought me new challenges because I am responsible for all entities in
the division. Business development, change processes, and major projects
are now part of my daily activities. My responsibilities have grown, but I
am eager to learn and develop, as I have been throughout my career.
An Apprenticeship
I began as an apprentice draftsman at Atlas Copco in 1983, when the
company was still part of Linde AG. I continued working here while I
studied mechanical engineering, and my first position after graduation
was in project management.
Working internationally in a corporate environment was always my goal, and
I still appreciate Atlas Copco’s uniquely open, international culture. Although I
was given major responsibilities from the start, my colleagues and managers
always provided extensive support.
Three years after joining the company, I moved to Application Engineering
before becoming Head of Expansion Turbines, where I began supervising
others.
The Story of a Career

Growing in the Division
Openness and Transparency
When we changed our organizational structure in 2003,
I was asked to launch our new Marketing Department.
I started as a one-man show, continuously recruiting my
team. When Atlas Copco moved into the expander and
hydrocarbon market in 2007, it acquired Mafi-Trench Ltd.
in the U.S. I was given the chance to become the Project
Manager, tasked with realizing the acquisition.
That year, I moved to the U.S. both to manage the
company’s integration and to become General Manager
of Comptec in Albany, NY, a Gas and Process Division
company. Our stay abroad was a very positive time for
me and my wife. We felt very welcome, and anything but
outsiders. You can sense the Atlas Copco spirit – open,
transparent, trusting, and fair – wherever you go around
the world.
Enjoy Your Work
I have been back in Cologne, my hometown, since
January 2011. I’m looking forward to the next step in my
Atlas Copco career. To be honest, I have never planned my
career but have tried to remain open to opportunities as
they’ve presented themselves.
What I would say to students today is: Make contact
with the business community as soon as you can while
studying, work hard, and set realistic goals. And last but
not least, have fun in your work.
A diversified workforce is the backbone of
good business. Atlas Copco Gas and Process aims
to empower employees from all walks of life.

Women in Technology
In Germany, Atlas Copco is proud
to be a part of the national ‘Girls’
Day’ initiative, which promotes the
attraction of technical professions
to female students. We invite female
high-school students to spend a day
at the company and to get to know
our products and culture – in short:
to get a taste of how exciting and
rewarding it is to work in a technical
environment.
“I think Atlas Copco is a great place for women,
and I have never felt that things were more difficult
for me just because I am a woman.” Liselotte Duthu,
Vice President Holding Greater China

Women in Technology
There is strength in a diversified workforce: A multiplicity
of backgrounds breeds a multiplicity of ideas. In today’s
international markets, companies that limit opportunities
for their employees based on gender, ethnicity, or
disability, or practice other forms of discrimination, are
limiting their own potential to meet the needs of their
clients and their industries.
At Atlas Copco, diversity is more than a question of
serving external interests. Selecting and promoting the
right individual to the right position is common-sense,
and the only way to run a business in today’s global
economy. Employees at Atlas Copco develop according to
their abilities, ambitions, and commitment.
We want to be at the forefront of tomorrow’s industries.
We aim to get there by helping all of our people fulfill
their potential. At the Atlas Copco Gas and Process
Division, we have local women’s networks across all of
our departments, promoting connections and exchange
among our female employees.
The Atlas Copco Female Mentorship Program offers the
opportunity for female managers from all over the world
to meet up regularly to work on group-related projects
and create a global network. The program is hosted by our
CEO, Ronnie Leten.
If you have the talent and desire to work with us, we
offer a company culture in which you can flourish, both
personally and professionally.
“The Female Mentorship Program is a great opportunity to get an overview of all business areas and divisions, as well as different cultures. […] If the right skills and motivation are available, you have a great chance to grow further in your career.”

Project Manager,
Atlas Copco Energas GmbH

Out of the Office
Here’s a sampling of what our employees
around the world are doing to stay happy and
healthy, at and away from their work stations:
• Health management, including illness and injury
prevention, nutrition, and sports
• Corporate run-and-walk events, participation in races
and exercise programs
• Team-building activities such as an annual chili cook-off
• Team outings and field trips
• Contact trips across the globe, where employees get
to meet their colleagues at other Atlas Copco Group
locations
At the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division, we
believe that out-of-the-office activities are important
in generating team spirit and helping to create a
good atmosphere, beyond and across departmental
borders.
An Active Culture
We stand by our responsibilities towards our customers, towards the environment and the people around us. We make performance stand the test of time. This is what we call — Sustainable Productivity.
