EXPANDING ACROSS

South CarolinaWhen we invest in South Carolina’s communities, we create long-term

sustainability and impact in preventing child abuse, neglect and injuries.

South Carolina Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Initiative

This statewide initiative helps children and families overcome the effects of traumatic experiences, prevent poor health outcomes and promote well-being later in life. We launched the pilot Pee Dee Resiliency Project with partners in eight elementary schools in Florence, Darlington and Marion Counties and hosted more than 300 child-serving professionals at the 2016 ACE Summit. The funding for this project is provided by the BlueCross® BlueShield® of South Carolina Foundation, an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

Strengthening Families Program (SFP) expansion

Implementation began in South Carolina with four partners in 2014 and has now expanded to include 20 partners offering the program in 23 counties. SFP works closely with families through a two-generation approach to teach effective parenting techniques and positive discipline to reduce problem behaviors. Program facilitators also help children develop skills needed for success in school and life. Children’s Trust continues to successfully expand SFP with financial support from The Duke Endowment and South Carolina Department of Social Services.

Increasing the availability of car seat technicians

As home to Safe Kids South Carolina, we train new volunteer child passenger safety technicians to ensure car seats are correctly installed and that more communities have fitting stations staffed by certified technicians. There are now nearly 1,200 technicians working in our state to keep children safe in motor vehicles.
