Ukrainian designer Mykola Gulyk of Design Studio Baraban+ won the 'Art Space' Award in November with the incredible 'BO' project. An international panel of judges - led by SBID (Society of British and International Design) President Vanessa Brady OBE - recognised the stunning project from a short-list featuring Armourcoat surface finishes. The designer specified Armourcoat polished plaster to create a Tuscan style throughout the interior.

Working with local agent Faktura UA, Baraban+ used the material to great effect for wall and ceiling finishes – including the swimming pool and bathroom areas. The Award was presented to MyKola by Armourcoat CEO Guy Whitehead at the prestigious Art Space event, which is held every two years in Kiev and attract the country's leading designers and architects.

The SBID also opened a representative office in Kiev last month to act as a channel to promote accredited designers in Ukraine, and to participate in seminars, round tables and other events in this field. MD Of RCM Offers Guidance When Specifying Building Specification ProductsAt the forefront of industry research and development, RCM constantly strive to innovate and develop their range of building boards and facades. Finding the latest technology is an ethos which lies at the very heart of RCM business and one that separates them from their competition. With a comprehensive range for all applications - RCM recognise the importance of providing quality certified products which have been rigorously tested, to meet the demands of a challenging construction industry.

Ian Quinton, Managing Director of RCM - suppliers of building boards, facade and roofing solutions to some of the UK’s most prestigious developments, outlines the key criteria to consider when specifying building boards and cladding solutions for structural applications.

Quality Certified Products - RCM recognise the importance of providing quality certified products which have been rigorously tested, to meet the demands of a challenging construction industry.

In order to select the right product for the right application, specifiers need to be supplied with the right technical information. The NBS National BIM Report 2014 reveals that 90% of specifiers find product inclusion in NBS BIM useful – they of course would say this, however as one of the few building board suppliers to use this specification system – RCM are great advocates.

Technical Approval - Specifying systems with a credible certification provides reassurance and confidence to specifiers. BBA, for example, offers full technical approval for construction products and is recognised by building control, government departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers and building insurers – essential in developing school buildings. BBA Approval provides architects, designers and contractors with certified information when specifying or installing building board products. Structural Strength and Stability - A significant consideration when assessing building boards is to ensure the optimum racking performance to enhance structural strength. For example, European Norm – BS EN 594:2011 is the recognised testing protocol for testing racking strength and stiffness of timber frame wall panels.

Another factor to consider for stability is moisture movement. When evaluating a solution, consider a system that offers a high level of dimensional stability with limited moisture movement. Building boards can

be specified with as little as 0.06% moisture movement. By specifying a building board that is fully tested to BS EN 1062-1, it ensures the boards have adequate moisture resistance and durability and will have a life equal to that of the building. Behaviour in Relation to Fire - The Building Regulations for England and Wales set out the legal obligations for building designers. These functional requirements outline what must be done, but do not address how to achieve this. An example of a functional requirement that covers structural stability in a fire is that, ‘the building shall be designed and constructed so that, in the event of a fire, its stability will be maintained for a reasonable period.’

RCM make technical information readily available and the material safety data sheet for building boards and external cladding systems is a good starting point.

CE Marking - CE Marking is a manufacturer's declaration that the product meets the requirements of the applicable EC directives in terms of safety, health and environmental requirements. CE Marked buildings boards appear under the harmonised standard of BS EN 12467:2012.

NEW to RCM’s products portfolio for 2016 - Tilcor and DAFA ranges. The stone coated and satin-finished roof systems incorporates cutting-edge Zincalume protective steel, which gives the tiles longevity and service life over traditional galvanised tiles – delivering a visually appealing finish and long term durability. The Tilcor range of pressed metal roofing tiles includes five distinctive profiles

DAFA membranes/seals - A wide range of products for creating airtight building envelopes, including: breathable membranes EPDM Weather Resistant Seals and Vapour Control Layer (VCL) Tape ranges. Both these products will be launched at the RCI Show 2016 on the 27 & 28th January 2016, Ricoh Arena Coventry – stand E9.

CPD Seminars - For those interested in finding out more, RCM provide informative CPD sessions including: a guide to materials, applications and specification considerations for building boards, internal and external linings and rainscreen facades, covering: • Whataspecifierneedstoconsider • Boardmaterialsandbenefits • Boardapplications • WorkonsiteFor more details call 0845 1303725 or visit www.buildingboards.co.uk

Designing Quiet Bathrooms – New RIBA Approved CPD From Geberit

Bathroom noises, caused by sanitaryware and behind-the-scenes pipework, can be an issue in multiple floored buildings, such as hotels, offices and

apartments, disturbing guests and occupants trying to sleep or work in these environments. To help architects, specifiers and M&E contractors understand and combat this problem, Geberit has launched new RIBA approved CPD, Embedding Acoustics into Design.

Providing a technical insight and definition of ‘noise’ and its causes, the CPD covers current British Standards relating to limiting bathroom sound, plus Geberit’s thorough approach to noise reduction; which starts with good design and ends with appropriate product choices and correct installation techniques.

Embedding Acoustics in Design – what’s included: Identification of the cause of ‘noise’ (cisterns, water in the soil stack etc.); importance of considering acoustics at the design stage; how to design a ‘quiet’ bathroom, looking at pipe layout, piping and sanitaryware types; overview of current legislation, and Geberit’s own laboratory data detailing the decibels (dBs) of bathroom sounds and the effect design, product choices and installation techniques have on reducing dBs.

Victoria Willis, Head of Piping and Product Management for Geberit commented. “According to Geberit’s own research, 90% of people* have been disturbed by waste water noise, with 55% of tenants stating they’d pay a little more rent if bathroom noises were reduced. This shows the importance of sound reduction; particularly in high end hotels and apartments. In our opinion, it is not always dealt with properly or even considered at any length at the design and planning stage, when in reality it’s incredibly important – getting a good night’s sleep is a priority for most people.” www.geberit.co.uk

Engineered Solution With A Certified Performance Designed To Overcome Skills Shortages And Meet Building Regulations

As widely reported, the recession caused a vast fall in the demand for bricks, resulting in many kilns ceasing to manufacture and bricklayers having to find alternative employment. As the industry emerged from the downturn, in 2014, it became clear that housebuilders were challenged by two major factors - a shortage of materials and traditional labour skills

Although many businesses grappled to find the best way forward, Alumasc Facade Systems turned this situation into an opportunity by developing a new and innovative facade technology designed specifically for the offsite structural timber sector – the Alumasc Ventilated System (AVS).

The initial product development remit was to design a ventilated system that would replicate traditional building aesthetics, whilst providing a lightweight solution that could be fixed directly to structural timber systems. Alumasc’s main goal was to ensure the system was engineered to deliver structural stability across all applications whilst providing adaptability to all forms of structural timber construction.

This innovative, engineered system provides the solution to overcome the fundamental issues of the brick shortages. AVS, as an offsite manufactured system, improves efficiency and speed of construction, addresses skills shortages and enhances the quality of finish, whilst delivering the final aesthetics to meet the exacting requirements of architects, designers and housebuilders.

The product offers specifiers a ventilated cladding solution for timber frame construction (open and closed panel technology), together with volumetric modular and structurally insulated panel systems (SIPS). It protects the fabric of the building whilst providing a wide choice of aesthetic options.

AVS meets all UK ventilation standards for timber framed buildings and offers an industry-leading A2 Fire Performance Rating, together with the highest levels of impact resistance and is suited to all exposure levels. AVS complies with the requirements of both the NHBC and TRADA, namely the need for ventilation for structural timber construction, with a minimum of 15mm ventilated cavity for NHBC and 25mm for TRADA.

The system accommodates a range of cavity depths - the free-flowing system ensures that the substrate remains continuously ventilated and prevents any moisture tracking back to the primary structure, removing condensation – providing a protective facade.

Offering an alternative method of construction, AVS can replicate any brick in the market via patented, lightweight acrylic brick slips. The system is not just limited to using acrylic brick slips as the final facade finish - it is also approved for use with textures, through-coloured silicone renders, along with an extensive range of dashing renders.

AVS is erected via Alumasc’s network of registered installers to ensure correct application onsite. The AVS installer training programme is independantly assessed and approved by the BBA. AVS comes with a 10 year warranty offer for all projects installed by an Alumasc registered contractor.

Technical ApprovalThe AVS system has been rigorously tested, resulting in compliance with all UK Building Regulations and became British Board of Agrément approved (Cert No: 15/5211) in May 2015. It is the only ventilated system in the UK to be BBA certified with an external acrylic brick slip finish and offers an industry-leading A2 rating, providing the building with improved fire performance when compared to other cladding solutions.

During the development of the system, Alumasc worked very closely with a number of companies and bodies to ensure AVS would meet the demands of the offsite and onsite construction industry, whilst providing optimum performance and longevity. These organisations include CCG, Exova Fire Research, Warrington (fire testing); Lucideon (UKAS accredited testing body); Pell Frishmann (Consultant Engineers) and the British Board of Agrément.

AVS is the solution to overcome current construction industry skills issues and is well-positioned to be part of the building technology of the future. For more information visit: www.alumascfacades.co.uk/avsTo book a CPD seminar please email: [email protected]

A 6 Month Study Led By The University Of Manchester Business School Finds Cost Of Purchasing And Installing FlexiGas™ To Be Approximately 71% Cheaper On Average Than That Of Copper

Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing is now being specified nationwide as Developers acknowledge its numerous benefits in both Residential and Commercial developments. FlexiGas™ offers unprecedented advantages due to its unparalleled time efficiency and cost effective pricing. FlexiGas™ saves up to 75% of installation time when compared

to rigid steel and copper piping - its semi-rigid nature allows the pipe to be passed through/around obstacles in a similar fashion to electrical cable.

Whilst Flexible Gas Piping has traditionally been expensive, the prices are now aligned with those of copper, which is precisely why it is rapidly gaining a greater presence

in the market. This is a fully certified, cost effective and robust solution that requires no specialist tools. The FlexiGas™ system uses significantly fewer fittings than rigid piping, resulting in fewer vulnerable points - making FlexiGas™ the safer, more reliable option. www.uk-plumbing-supplies.co.uk

The Portakabin Group Announced As Preferred Bidder For £28 Million Of School Contracts In Surrey And Kent The Portakabin Group has been announced as preferred bidder for seven infant and primary school projects in Surrey and Kent. The contracts for the Department for Education will be worth in the region of £28 million. The projects will be completed by winter 2017 and constructed using a Yorkon off-site solution. The schemes have been identified by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) for delivery under the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP). The PSBP was established to address the needs of those schools in the worst condition across the country.

A spokesperson from the EFA confirmed, “There was very strong competition in the off-site sector for this batch of projects and the modular market has clearly risen to the challenge with more advanced technical solutions. We looked closely at design, cost, experience and management.”

Simon Ambler, Director of the Portakabin Group, “This is another milestone for the Portakabin Group and for the off-site sector. We are delighted to be able to demonstrate our ability to deliver high quality, affordable school buildings on time, on budget and to faster programmes to the benefit of children’s education. The opportunity for off-site construction to help transform the learning environment for thousands of pupils and their teachers under the Priority School Building Programme is immense.”

“Off-site construction gives schools the benefits of considerable savings on programme because the sub and super structures are delivered simultaneously; it is safer because work off site is maximised, and the approach reduces disruption – which are all clear advantages when redeveloping fully operational school sites.”

Three of the seven projects identified in the Surrey and Kent batch are now in the design stages. The first to start on site will be Pyrford Church of England Primary School in Woking. A £5 million 2FE primary school with two ‘bulge’ classrooms will be constructed to accommodate 480 children from the start of the 2016/17 academic year. It will replace the existing single-storey school which will then be demolished.

Pyrford is a complex site which will include the retention of an existing children’s centre and nursery. The design of the new two-storey building will significantly increase the external space and access for outdoor play and learning, and high levels of natural light will provide a welcoming and bright internal environment for teaching. Rinnai UK, the leading supplier of ‘A’ rated continuous flow Infinity gas fired water heaters, has a dedicated technical service team to ensure customers get service performance that matches the excellence of product performance, with a view of adding value that by far surpasses the transaction stage creating long-term value for our customer base. Rinnai Technical Services offers all customers help and advice throughout the complete lifecycle of a product. The team can and will respond to any queries on specification, installation and operation of Rinnai unit.

Pete Seddon, Technical Team Leader says, “Architects and consultants are really into conservation, energy efficiencies and gas consumption and nowadays they are looking at the complete building whereas before it was all about product choice, space and siting of a unit. We offer assistance and advice - as unbiased as possible - to help them decide.”

Operating from Rinnai UK’s Cheshire headquarters the principle members of the team includes Ian Jenkins, Technical & Compliance Officer; Pete Seddon, Technical & Product Development officer and Danny Kay, Design Support Officer. The tech depart will happily check over designs and schematics and advise on changes.

“Some people need talking through the advantages of changing from a traditional storage system to a wall mounted instantaneous water heater system and we can help them make the decision and then the transition,” says Pete. “We can also advise on

whether they should be using 3, 4 or 5 units or drop a couple off and replace with a storage vessel for a renewables set up instead i.e. 2 x Rinnai 2 x solar storage tanks and/or heat pumps/solar.”

Pete continues: “Caravan and leisure parks especially need lots of hot water concentrated in peak times for showering and if there isn’t enough they can suffer from bad visitor reviews online which can affect bookings. Owners tend to get really involved in the choice of system used – they really get it,” he says. “Again, hot water demands for restaurants are very different from those for domestic use and larger commercial buildings so we can advise on the right system there.”

“The end user will often undertake their own research before installation and they want to hear our advice before they commit themselves. Consumers are smart and want to do their own checking before parting with their money and they are mining the internet for information too.”

“Rinnai is in its twelfth year in the UK and more and more engineers are having positive experience with the brand. If your first encounter with a infinity is when called to service a unit, we are on hand to take away the fear of taking on unfamiliar technology. Rinnai units are technically advanced but easy to understand so we can alleviate any fears they may have about undertaking the job.

Installers can also call on the Rinnai technical department for training, which is provided free. “We have recently increased the training portfolio

adding different packages and these sessions open engineers’ eyes to the possibilities of Rinnai technology. They are becoming ever more popular and this week alone we trained in excess of 40 people in the UK and Ireland – and all free.

“However, we recognise that for an engineer driving up to Cheshire from Cornwall, for example, that would mean 2 days off work with a stopover so we have been offering remote training at venues closer to home. For this we would need a minimum of four people. If we can’t get an appropriate room nearby then we can always bring along the Rinnai dedicated training trailer.

Pete explains how Rinnai’s recent massive investment in R&D in the products themselves (all ‘A’ rated under stringent ERP energy labelling legislation), increasing the numbers of specialist personnel and improving the Rinnai website is a boon to customers.

“The technical department works as a cohesive group with the customer service team and the sales consultants. We all have our specialisms but we wouldn’t be successful if we didn’t work together. The set up we have at Rinnai UK at the Cheshire headquarters seamlessly links everything together. When somebody phones customer services with a technical question it is passed on to us to answer quickly with the caller speaking to a person and not somebody reading from a script,” Pete concludes. www.rinnaiuk.com

Probably The Best Saltless Water Softener In The World

People have been copying Aquatiere’s saltless water softeners over the past few years and have achieved limited success. Unfortunately the customer who expects ‘soft water’ was often disappointed by the fact that the softener did not perform as they expected.Aquatiere was the first UK company to use pre-crystalisation resins such as TAC and WAC to stop scale forming in pipework and equipment and market this as a saltless water softener.4 years of R&D later Aquatiere has now produced a product that meets customers expectations. Renewable Technology At Core Of The Omnie Collection

Heat pumps remain a relatively nascent technology in the UK market, meaning customers should seek to purchase properly integrated systems from manufacturers with a proven track record. The Omnie collection by Timóleon brings together just such an offering, which includes high performance air to water heat pumps as well as a compatible selection of underfloor heating systems and fully compatible control options.

The 6 to 9 kW LWD models have been developed to offer high efficiency and very quiet operation as well as a long low maintenance working life. The LWD is intended to be located close to a property while the internal module contains the hydraulic unit with the expansion vessel, back up heater and circulator. If the predicted load demands the installation of two heat pumps, the internal HMD hydraulic unit will provide the necessary

control functions for the cascade arrangement. The Omnie range also features an LW ‘monobloc’ model that is designed to be located away from the building. Almost as quiet as the LWD alternative, the 12 to 35 kW LW heat pumps produce a noise level of 51 dB at one metre distance.

Not all air source heat pumps are suitable for use in the UK’s moist temperate climate, either in respect of their performance or their durability, but the LWD heat pumps under the Omnie brand are corrosion protected and designed to both generate high COPs (Coefficients of Performance) at lower temperatures, and to minimize defrost cycles when the weather is freezing. www.omnie.co.uk

Innovative New Heat Pump Matches New-Build Hot Water Requirements

Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new 4kW Ecodan air source heat pump designed specifically to tackle the needs of new-build homes, with a system that matches the hot water requirements, whilst still meeting the lower heating demand of today’s well insulated properties. New homes built today differ from previous ones because the requirement for hot water is likely to exceed the demand for heating for the first time.

A reduction in fabric U-values and thermal bridging has reduced the energy requirements for heating and also allows for smaller plant. The Ecodan QUHZ monobloc system meets this need by providing exceptionally high efficiency in the production of hot water, along with renewable space heating for the home.

The Ecodan QUHZ unit is MCS-Approved and straightforward to install, delivering water at 70ºC to a packaged 200 litre thermal store. From this thermal store, mains water is heated directly up to 65ºC via Mitsubishi Electric’s unique plate heat exchanger, meaning the homeowner receives hot water on demand.

This model uses CO2 as a refrigerant to ensure a large delta T between the flow and return temperatures to and from the outdoor unit, delivering the high levels of efficiency that enable the system to meet the high hot water, low heating requirements of today’s new-build properties. The fundamental design, application and control of the Ecodan QUHZ is exactly the same as the rest of the range with advanced control logic within the thermal store allowing the system to deliver the high efficiency levels that the market has come to expect from the Ecodan brand. www.mitsubishielectric.co.uk

A Cool Solution From SE Controls For Sydney’s Netball Central

Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park’s state of the art netball complex, is using a natural ventilation solution from SE Controls’ Australian systems partner, Unique Window Services (UWS), to deliver precise, energy efficient control over indoor air quality and temperature at the centre. The natural ventilation system uses four compact SE Controls NVLogiQ zone controllers, which constantly monitor a range of indoor air quality parameters, including carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature and humidity to maintain a comfortable environment for teams and spectators.Air quality in each of four zones in the centre’s upper and lower levels are monitored by the NVLogiQ units and if it exceeds any of the pre-defined environment set-point limits the controllers trigger the automatic opening of high and low level louvres to provide ventilation or cooling. In normal operation, the principle of thermal stacking is used with warm stale air being vented through the high level vents, which has the effect of drawing cooler and fresher replacement air into the building via the low level louvres. In addition to the NVLogiQ controllers, 10 dedicated SE Controls PSUs were also installed as part of the system, which ensure each louvre responds precisely to the signals received from the controller and provides the correct level of ventilation. The system is also configured to provide night purge cooling at the end of each day, which not only helps reduce the internal temperature, but by fully opening the vents it also ensures that stratified air is removed along with any airborne pollutants that have built up during the day. www.secontrols.com

Carbon Monoxide – And How A Window Could Help Save Your LifeIt is the most common cause of poisoning death. You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You can’t taste it. Yet it kills hundreds of people each year around the world. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a deadly risk to health. It is also impossible detect without the right equipment. No doubt you have heard news stories of people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. You are probably aware that it has a lot to do with badly-maintained gas appliances.

Why is it so dangerous – and how can windows make a difference? In this short article we take a look at some important facts about carbon monoxide, before talking about some Roto products that can be used to form part of a safeguarding policy.

What exactly is carbon monoxide?Although it can occur naturally, in this context carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Fuels such as gas, oil or wood all contain carbon. Normally, when they are burned with a sufficient supply of oxygen, the carbon oxidises and becomes carbon dioxide (C02). However, if there is insufficient oxygen, it is possible for the oxidation process to be incomplete and the result is carbon monoxide (CO).

Why is it so dangerous?Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous to humans. When inhaled, it is absorbed into the blood much more readily than oxygen. From there, it bonds itself to the haemoglobin in the bloodstream. This has the effect of reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Carbon monoxide victims die of hypoxia: oxygen starvation. Exposure to less than fatal levels of CO can also cause permanent neurological damage.

Important things to checkThere are a few basic checks you can make in the home from time to time to make sure there is no obvious cause of carbon monoxide or lack of ventilation: Look for sooting or discolouration and and around gas appliances, including boilers and water heaters; Pilot lights and gas flames should burn blue. If yellow or orange, this is a sign of incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide may be being produced; Make sure flues and chimneys are clear and don’t contain leaks; Check that air vents in walls are not blocked.

Where do Roto products come into this?It is highly recommended that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. There are many battery and mains-products devices on the market. Many are stand-alone devices that emit an alarm signal when CO is detected. However, it is also possible to have a detector wired into a ‘smart’ home automation system. Roto’s electromechanical drive systems enable windows to be opened, closed and locked remotely. The drive units can be connected to a ‘smart’ system so that windows open or close in response to conditions, for example humidity, rain – or carbon monoxide.

Immediate ventilationTherefore, you could have a system that not only sets off an alarm and warns you of carbon monoxide, but which also opens windows immediately in order to provide ventilation. The Roto E-Tec Drive is the ideal product for automated operation of Tilt&Turn and Tilt-Only windows.

Completely concealedIt is suitable for Timber, Aluminium and PVC windows and the drive unit is completely concealed within the window frame. When used with the Roto Designo concealed Tilt&Turn hardware, it creates a window on which there are no visible hinges or drive components.

The smart roof windowThe new RotoComfort i8 roof window can also be connected to a smart automation system in exactly the same way. Featuring a completely concealed drive, the RotoComfort i8 opens significantly more quickly than conventional electric roof windows. With a maximum opening angle of 45 degrees, the window provides a good level of immediate ventilation. www.roto-frank.co.uk

Hybrid VRF System Delivers The Best Of VRF And Chiller Technologies

Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new air conditioning system that delivers levels of comfort normally associated with Chiller technology, whilst providing the flexibility and efficiencies of traditional VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow). The City Multi Hybrid VRF system operates without using refrigerant in occupied spaces, removing the need for leak detection equipment and allowing more properties to take advantage of manageable phased installation through the system’s modular two-pipe design.

At the heart of the new system is an HBC (Hybrid Branch Controller) box, connected to an outdoor City Multi unit via traditional refrigerant piping. Between the HBC and the indoor fan coils, the system uses water piping but is still able to deliver mild air-off temperatures and a great stability of temperature all year round, supplying Chiller levels of comfort to occupants. With no refrigerant in occupied spaces, Hybrid VRF also enables simple compliance with BS EN378 and completely removes the need for leak detection in any occupied room. This technological benefit also means a low overall system refrigerant volume.

At the same time, Hybrid VRF offers the complete flexibility of design and installation that City Multi VRF has become renowned for whilst still providing centralised control, individual operation, and simultaneous heating and cooling with heat recovery. Each individual HBC can supply heating and cooling to 16 individual indoor units – using City Multi’s unique two-pipe system and including options for ducted, cassette and floor-standing models. Two main HBC’s and two sub units can be connected to the same City Multi outdoor unit to deliver simultaneous heating and cooling to up to 50 individual rooms or areas. Humidity Matters At Jersey Air Traffic Control

Jersey Air Traffic Control has recently installed four Condair steam humidifiers at its centre in Jersey Airport, which is responsible for the coordination of air traffic in the busy skies above the Channel Islands. Les Smallwood, Senior Air Traffic Control Officer at the centre, explains, “The human element is important. In a job where errors could be critical, an environment that is comfortable and considers people’s well-being also supports their working needs. The humidifiers are a part of this.” The need for humidification first became apparent amongst staff wearing contact lenses. Les Smallwood continues, “We use air conditioning to maintain an environment of 21°C but this was drying the air. People’s eyes were becoming uncomfortable, especially for those wearing contact lenses. We used mobile humidifiers at first, to prove the point, before investing in a permanent solution with the Condair humidifiers”. Les confirms that air traffic control staff and the airport’s building services team are pleased with the results. www.condair.co.uk

Omnie Ground Source Heat Pumps Serve Six Bathroom Rural Redevelopment

The redevelopment of a former lock keeper’s cottage in Somerset, being replaced by a 850 square metre spacious modern family home, is making use of two ground source heat pumps from Omnie to provide not just space heating, but also hot water for the property’s six bathrooms, kitchen and utility. The site isn’t connected to mains gas and the heat pumps provide a cost effective way to provide low temperature heating without having to bring in mains gas or rely on fossil fuels or high temperature heat sources. The design of the building is very contemporary and offers large open plan areas which is ideally suited for UFH and low temperature heating. Because of the properties size/ building form and high specification of insulation, glazing the heating loads are low and therefore suited for efficient heat pump design operating at 35-40 degreesº flow temperature. This is further enhanced by a PV array, which provides

electricity to the heat pump operation storing the energy in the large buffer and hot water cylinder. The architect has made good provision for a large plant room and service access to different parts of the building, this is key to integration of good heating system, which the clients are very impressed with. With five bedrooms and six bathrooms, demand for hot water is potentially high and the pair of Omnie SWC 140S ground source heat pumps are suitably sized to meet the heating and hot water loads, harvesting free warmth from pipe runs laid across an adjoining field. www.omnie.co.uk

Mega Protects Historic Museum FloorFounded in 1683, the Ashmolean Museum is the most significant museum of art and archaeology in the UK and welcomes more than a million visitors each year.

Oxford based flooring firm, ACH Flooring, regularly recoats the original herringbone floors in the City’s Ashmolean Museum with Bona Mega. Cleverly formulated to use oxygen as a crosslinker, Bona Mega delivers the performance of a two component lacquer in the convenience of a one pack product and is designed to offer high wear and chemical resistance in domestic, commercial or public environments.

A sustainable, NMP free lacquer, Mega provides the museum’s maintenance team with a durable, easy to clean surface. Bona Cleaner and Bona Polish are used for ongoing maintenance of the floors.

ACH’s Kevin Smith said “We have been using Bona lacquers since the 1980s when the company’s core products included Pacific One and Pacific Stong. Today we like using Bona Mega for commercial and domestic projects because of its fast drying times, it has no

smell, and for the finished look. Also our mops and brushes can be easily cleaned. We’ve been using it now for many years and have never had any problems with it.”

The museum team wanted a soft sheen to the surface so Kevin recommended using one coat of Bona Prime Classic followed by three coats of Bona Mega Silk Matt to achieve this. Bona Mega is available in four sheen levels including Extra Matt that combines a hard wearing surface with a very natural, almost ‘invisible’ finish to the surface. Bona’s technical team is available for support on site or over the telephone to assist you with your wood flooring project and to ensure the surface meets your client’s aesthetic and performance criteria. Mapei UK Helps The Refurbishment Of Monaghan Shopping CentreA complete system of Mapei products has been installed in the Monaghan Shopping Centre, North East of Ireland. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed, Epojet, Eporip, Planicrete, Topcem, Eco Prim T, Primer G, Keraquick, Latex Plus, Mapetex, Ultracolor Plus and Mapesil AC provided a series of systems to prepare the substrate, refurbish the existing floor and install Pamesa Ikom ADZ tiles.

Mapei was asked by Ostick and Williams Architects Belfast to provide a system of products for the refurbishment of the shopping centre due to movement in the substrate resulting in cracking and de-bonding of the existing porcelain tiles. The products were supplied and installed by Armatile, and included three main systems of Mapei products being used to repair the substrate and install new tiling on the 1,400m2 of retail and leisure space.

When all the existing tiles, decorative flooring and residual adhesive was removed large cracks in the screed were exposed. The first system of Mapei products specified was to replace areas of screed. This system of repair included Epojet, Eporip, Planicrete and Topcem. Cracks in the existing screed were repaired using Eporip and Epojet.

In several sections of the project a screed containing the Mapei Topcem binder was installed to repair the substrate using Planicrete to bond the new screed to the existing screed and concrete substrate. The second system of Mapei products installed was used to smooth the total area to a tolerance

of SR1 for the installation of large format porcelain tiles. The screed was primed with Eco Prim T then, where needed, levelled with Ultraplan

Renovation Screed levelling compound. The third system of Mapei products was used to complete the installation of the Pamesa Ikam ADZ tiles. Around 1,400m2 of 600x600mm tiles were installed in ‘bays’ using Mapei’s Keraquick rapid setting flexible tile adhesive and Mapei’s Ultracolor Plus grey flexible grout with BioBlock® technology.

Mapetex, an anti-fracture membrane, which protects tiled surfaces from substrate stresses was fixed using a combination of Mapei’s high performance, flexible, S1, rapid setting Keraquick adhesive incorporating Latex Plus, an admixture that provides elasticity and improves the deformability of the adhesive. This combination of Keraquick adhesive and Latex Plus admixture was continued to install the tiles throughout the centre.

Mapei’s flexible, versatile, multi-purpose grout Ultracolor Plus and their solvent-free, mould resistant silicone sealant Mapesil AC was used to enhance the overall aesthetics of the new facilities.

The project took nine months in total to complete.

Forbo Maps Out The Floor At Manchester Science PartnershipsTaking full advantage of Forbo Flooring Systems’ high quality, digital printing capabilities, The Sheila Bird Group has helped Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) to create the wow factor in the main social space of their client’s Greenheys building. Their custom-designed A to Z map of Manchester, digitally printed onto Forbo’s durable vinyl floor covering, has created an eye-catching and engaging focal point. As one of the UK’s leading science park operators, MSP wanted an events and community space on the park that would encourage its group of scientists, innovators, investors and entrepreneurs to connect with one another.

Chris Naughton at The Sheila Bird Group commented: “The interior of MSP’s Greenheys building has a lot of exposed brick and so we wanted to retain the industrial feel of the building within the space, but also install a completely unique floor covering to inject a stand-out feature in the area. Therefore, we created a custom A to Z map, pinpointing the various MSP buildings dotted around Manchester in different colours, enabling visitors to immerse themselves into the map and orientate themselves in the city by just looking at the floor covering.”

There are no limits to the aesthetic designs that can digitally printed onto Forbo’s Eternal vinyl which retains the full performance specification of the Eternal core collection; durable, high quality and easy to clean and maintain.

Chris commented: “We have used Forbo on many projects as they are able to offer good quality products at a competitive price and have the ability to deliver custom floor coverings – something we definitely desired and attained for this project. Indeed, the interior of the building could not have looked this great without Forbo. This project has been very successful and it has led to us developing a great relationship with MSP.” For more information please call Forbo on 0844 822 3928 or visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/eternal

VS-1 Curtain Walling Delivers For Flagship Sky Project

Speed of construction and superb aesthetics, coupled with very high technical demands, were crucial in meeting the exacting requirements of media giant Sky as it realised its ambition to create an industry leading community engagement and educational facility at its West London campus. The VS-1 curtain walling system from GLASSOLUTIONS held the key to meeting this dual challenge for the ‘Believe in Better’ Building, given the glazing system simplicity and its ability to easily span large heights with clean, unbroken sightlines.

The 3,000m2 timber framed building, developed by Sky, in conjunction with Mace, houses a wide variety of educational and community facilities, including the Sky Academy at which young people can use the power of creativity, television and sport to develop new skills and unlock their potential. BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated, the building is designed in-line with Sky’s sustainability strategy throughout, with a thermally superior fabric, photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation and rainwater harvesting just some of the integrated measures.

Working from initial design concepts by Arup Associates, GLASSOLUTIONS was tasked with the £3m project to detail design, manufacture and install the whole building facade. The key feature of this is a centrepiece ground to fourth storey staircase which would offer building users uncluttered views across the adjacent and newer parts of the Sky complex. It was a facade design that would have challenged any standard curtain walling system within a typical timescale, let alone one which was half the time.

From the very first discussions with Mace and Sky, the suitability of VS-1 was immediately apparent. As a mullion-only system which requires no mid-point horizontal structural support for very large spans – 12.5m in this case – and no transoms, VS-1 met the architects’ vision and ensured Sky could realise its ambition to match eye-catching aesthetics with an open internal environment benefitting from plenty of natural light.

The Believe in Better Building features externally mounted VS-1 mullions which have a distinctive ‘aerofoil’ shape to support the glazing along the full length of the 51m staircase, over which it rises some 15m. These are highly engineered aluminium extrusions which are secured using stainless steel brackets at top and bottom cantilevers from the building’s timber structure. These ensure a secure attachment at the top of the structure and at each floor level.

VS-1’s brackets hold the glass panels away from the mullion to give it a ‘floating’ effect – these are then siliconed at the top and bottom to give a flush finish. Each double glazed sealed unit – many of which are 3.2m high – features 13.5mm Saint-Gobain Planidur heat strengthened, laminated panes of glass on the interior and 8mm Securit toughened, heat soak tested on the exterior. The glass is Saint-Gobain’s COOL-LITE SKN165 II which was chosen to balance solar control and thermal insulation. www.glassolutions.co.uk

Cardiff Central Station Kicks Off For Rugby World Cup

Wrightstyle, the UK steel and aluminium glazing company, has completed a major upgrading project at Cardiff Central Station for Network Rail Wales. The completion follows a similar project at Cardiff Queen Street station, in a major programme that Network Rail describes as the largest-ever rail enhancement scheme in Wales. The overall project, working with BAM Construction, is part of the Cardiff Stations Enhancement Scheme, and which saw Wrightstyle supply some 300 square metres of Schueco’s FW60XR enhanced curtain wall system, along with doors, windows and automated sliding entrance doors.Richard Panniers, project surveyor for Bam Construction said: “This has been a project of enormous complexity – not least to ensure that all aspects were completed to budget and on time, with both Cardiff Central and Queen Street stations remaining open during upgrading works. Wrightstyle had to work within those constraints, and the company’s glass and glazing components have helped transform both stations into modern and safe transport hubs,” he said. The Cardiff contract further extended Wrightstyle’s commercial relationship with Network Rail for whom it has supplied systems for several stations, most notably for the refurbishment of London’s King’s Cross.“At Wrightstyle, we have long experience in both rail and airport projects – for example, for a major rail hub in Hong Kong and the Dubai Metro and, In the UK, in several railway and Underground stations,” said Tim Kempster, Wrightstyle’s managing director. “Our comprehensive range of advanced doors, internal screens and external glazing systems are designed to contain fire, smoke and toxic gases for up to two hours, and have been successfully tested against both ballistic and bomb attack,” he said.To receive Wrightstyle’s regular newsletter, simply subscribe at www.wrightstyle.co.uk

CMS Window Systems has played a key role in delivering high quality student accommodation for the Glasgow School of Art (GSA), helping a leading developer breathe new life into a city centre office building that had become surplus to requirements.

As student numbers soar across the UK, forward thinking developers and universities are working hard to meet the growing demand for high quality student accommodation.

Whilst new build development often represents the ideal solution, limited site availability in city centre locations can make refurbishment of redundant buildings a more feasible approach. This was the case for the GSA which was keen to provide additional accommodation for its students in the heart of Glasgow, close to its Garnethill campus.

Developer Cityheart Ltd, who have a strong track record in working with the public sector in regeneration projects such as student accommodation, have facilitated this by breathing new life into the disused eight-storey Blythswood House. Designed by Cooper Cromar, this refurbishment project has transformed a disused office building into the convenient new student residences that the GSA sought for its 2015 intake.

Located on West Regent Street to the west of Glasgow city centre, Blythswood House is a short walk from the GSA’s main campus, providing 218 rooms arranged over six floors. These rooms are arranged in clusters of six to eight rooms with communal kitchen, dining and seating areas. There are also self-contained apartments at ground floor and roof level for the

building’s warden and visiting lecturers and tutors, plus superb amenities including studios, workshops, exhibition space, a cinema and a gym.

Working with main contractor Graham Construction, CMS Window Systems was appointed to design, manufacture and install high performance, contemporary style aluminium windows for the building’s external envelope. Using the Metal Technology 4-20 thermally broken system, CMS has provided over 500 windows on the project as well as installing the bespoke panels which feature as part of the external envelope refurbishment solution.

CMS Window Systems routinely delivers projects like Blythswood House for main contractors across the UK to the highest standard. The company is a leading aluminium curtain walling, window and door manufacturer and installer which was one of the first contractors of its kind to become BIM-ready. Its technical capabilities and systems portfolio ensure the company is equipped to deliver a wide range of projects and applications including hotels and leisure complexes, student accommodation, schools and office buildings.

GSA is internationally recognised as one of Europe's leading university-level institutions for the visual creative disciplines. Founded in 1845 as one of the first Government Schools of Design, as a centre of creativity promoting good design for the manufacturing industries, the GSA’s role has continually evolved and developed. www.cmswindows.com

Cut Corners For An Uninterrupted View With Imago Cornerless Glazing

AGB Hardware reports significant interest in its cornerless glazing option, which can be specified alongside the Imago Lift & Slide door. With cornerless glazing, the panoramic glazing elements can be extended to create a fixed corner of glass without a mullion. This enables housebuilders to maximise the view from a property using complete glazed walls, as well as meeting modern demands for flexible living spaces.

“An uninterrupted view is so on-trend amongst homeowners at the moment,” confirms Marco Zen, UK & Ireland Sales Manager of AGB Hardware. “Cornerless glazing pushes the concept even further; when the sliding doors are opened, homeowners benefit from the widest possible border between the interior and exterior, transforming the garden into an extension of your living space.”

Even when closed, the Imago Lift & Slide concept ensures that there is the barest minimum of visible area at the corner point. The innovative Imago Life & Slide mechanism means that the hardware disappears into the frame, which is buried tightly within the plaster line for a sightline as narrow as 2cm: aesthetically pleasing and also an ideal means of reducing ‘cold bridging’ for exceptional insulation. Imago Lift & Slide also delivers a reliable silky smooth slide mechanism that is practically invisible.

Where the frames meet, a range of advanced high security locking systems can be specified to provide that essential peace of mind, while also meeting the latest legal requirements in security under the provisions of Document Q. Using Imago can reduce glazing costs on a project by 40 percent, meaning it is as cost-efficient as it is aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. www.chooseimago.co.uk

World Class Service From Crittall

Melbourne House is one of four buildings that comprise central London’s Aldwych Quarter, a 450,000 sq ft complex original built as offices that once housed the global headquarters of the BBC World Service. The four buildings provided John Robertson Architects with the largest refurbishment project in the centre of the capital in recent years. It was completed in 2014.

The buildings were originally designed between 1923 and 1929 although 37,715 sq ft Melbourne House underwent a major refurbishment in 1974 that involved some significant alterations including the removal of original subdivided windows and their substitution with undivided, plain glazing.

This seriously compromised the external appearance of the building. The latest refurbishment, undertaken by main contractor ISG, involved a complete remodeling and re-configuring of the accommodation as well as the replacement of all windows between the second and eighth floors with new double-glazed openable Crittall Corporate W20 windows.

Project architect Liam O Grady from John Robertson Architects explains: “The design of the windows with glazing bars is in keeping with the original 1929 design and also complements the scale and detail of the original windows in the neighbouring buildings. Similar to its neighbours, the external frames are finished in black, whilst the internal frames are finished in white to ensure a bright neutral internal appearance.” The black frames, viewed from outside, however, provide a striking contrast with the white Portland stone façade which has been painstakingly cleaned to restore the building to its former glory. www.crittall-windows.co.uk

The Future Of Commercial DoorsFor many years commercial entrance doors for office and retail developments have been available in aluminium; lightweight and sustainable aluminium framed doors are easy to make, strong and can cope with high usage, but their traditional looks can be a little dated. But now, for the more prestige developments, there is a new contender in the market…

Enter the MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door from Aluprof, it takes the inherent strength and sustainability from a frame of aluminium but also caters for bonded glazed units. The completed door has beautiful, flush, clean lines and is perfect for any commercial entrance application. Available with or without threshold the MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door can be configured to open in or open out and can be automated with some of the leading door automatics.

Using standard Euro style locks and hardware, security can be configured to suit the clients exact requirements. The MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door therefore offers, good looks, high security and good insulation for a wide range of applications.

Levolux Sheds Light On Fine Art

The new £15 million extension to The Whitworth gallery in Manchester employs a state-of- the-art solar shading solution, coupled with an intelligent lighting control system, provided by Levolux.

To prevent excessive glare and unwanted solar heat gain, Levolux developed a combined Solar Shading and Lighting Control solution. The Solar Shading solution comprises 48 Roller Blinds and 30 Skyvane systems, all motorised and linked to an intelligent control system. Unguided, guided and zipped roller blinds were combined with non-retractable blinds, in the form of Levolux’s Skyvane system, to satisfy challenging performance requirements.

Roller blinds are fitted with a range of fabrics that were chosen for their particular light transmission or light exclusion properties. Levolux also fitted double roller blinds and upward pulling roller blinds to deliver uncompromised results. The Skyvane

system, which is a form of non-retractable Venetian blind, has been applied internally against inclined glazed openings in three vaulted ceilings. 85mm wide extruded aluminium slats have been used, with a pitch of 75mm.

The slats can be rotated through approximately 100 degrees, from a fully open to a fully closed position. When closed, the slats are designed to interlock for maximum light exclusion. All blinds are linked to a Levolux lighting control system, which monitors multiple internal and external light sensors and presence detectors. These can be individually configured to set the level of lighting required given a range of criteria. www.levolux.com

Metal Technology Systems Meet The Brief For Cornwall Council

When Cornwall Council decided to consolidate office facilities at the Beacon Technology Park in Bodmin, strong environmental performance was a key stipulation of the brief. The Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole Architects BIM design featured two separate frames linked by an atrium and main contractor, BAM Construction utilised leading edge performance products from Metal Technology.

Metal Technology’s System 17 SP (silicone pointed) with concealed vents and System 17 capped high rise curtain walling formed the framework for the

extensive glazed façades. System 17 SP is a structured glazing system designed to create visually impressive all-glass façades with profiles that provide structural integrity, weather performance, thermal enhancement and, importantly, can only be seen on the inside of the building.

System 5-20D Hi+ thermally broken doors were also specified for the project. Part of Metal Technology’s THERMAL range, the System 5-20D Hi+ door system achieves high levels of thermal performance by utilising specially designed polyamide thermal break profiles, thermal gaskets and foam profiles, allowing it to meet and exceed the latest thermal requirements of the current building regulations, while at the same time creating the desired look for the overall design and aesthetic.www.metaltechnology.com

The New Greenhouse For YouthOne of the most unusual projects which dramatically illustrates the role of Kalwall cladding is Roundwood Youth Centre. The stunning 1,358sqm facility is designed to provide deprived young people in the Brent area of London with a high performance social, leisure and training facility. Morgan Sindall appointed architects Saunders Boston who worked closely with Mace’s Design Studio, the original concept and planning designers for this landmark project. Of particular interest is the way in which the envelope is wrapped around a series of offset building elements all of which are clad with Kalwall. This translucent cladding system was specified in order to flood the interior with evenly distributed diffused daylight, without glare or the harsh contrasts of light and shade. Energy running costs are reduced because of its superior insulation which means less reliance on artificial lighting. At night, the building glows. Kalwall, the most highly insulating diffuse light transmitting cladding and skylighting system available, also contributed to the building’s carbon reduction credentials and its ‘Very good’ BREEAM rating. Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. Bustling Night Life On Its Doorstep; Ham Yard Hotel Offers A Peaceful Night’s Sleep With Selectaglaze

Located in a lively part of London lies the gorgeous Ham Yard Hotel, built on a plot that has been vacant for a number of years. It has everything guests could ask for on its doorstep from vibrant bars to quirky shops.

Although new double glazed windows were installed throughout the building, the corner of the hotel on Great Windmill Street still suffered from high external noise levels. The introduction of secondary glazing is one of the most effective solutions for combating outside sound. A reduction of 45dB is attainable when there is a gap of at least 100mm. A total of 37 openings were treated in three different unit styles. The secondary glazing was finished in a dark grey colour to match the existing primary windows, making them as discreet as possible. Acoustic laminated glass was used, which absorbs the outside noise levels, to assist in creating a peaceful and relaxing environment. As testament to the detailed planning throughout the design and build phases, Firmdale’s efforts were rewarded with the Hotel gaining a BREEAM Excellent rating. Established in 1966 and Royal Warrant holders since 2004, Selectaglaze will be at Ecobuild on the 8th to the 10th of March

FAKRO Launches RAL Colours For Flat Roof WindowsInnovation has become something of a bi-word for FAKRO, a series of revolutionary roof window designs and technical improvements having set the standard for other manufacturers to match. Introduction of the DEF flat roof window in 2014 redefined the visual aesthetic for such products but the launch of ‘ColourLine’ now enables any RAL colour from the Classic Palette to be specified for outer cladding.

Whether to blend with a green roof, colours used in terrace landscaping or tiles on pitches up to 15°, the design scope is virtually limitless. An XRD upstand can also be used to add 15cm height.

Thermally efficient triple or quadruple-glazed units can be ordered, the DEF U8 window offering an unparalleled level of performance with an installed U-value of 0.76 W/m²K*. This means roof windows can be used not just in standard flat roof extensions but in passive house designs, using sizes from 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200mm (1200 x 2200mm for standard roofs).

With a glazing area up to 16% greater than other manufacturers’ windows of comparable size, they can also be used to replace existing skylights, greatly improving availability of natural light.

Interior surfaces of frame and sash are white PVC, making them ideal for bathrooms and wetrooms. All have a 6mm toughened outer and a P2A anti-burglary laminated inner pane while electrically operated windows have a built-in sensor to activate sash closure when rain is detected. The servo-motor is positioned in the sash and fully protected to ensure years of trouble-free operation.www.fakro.co.uk

ESG Help To Create The Perfect Penguin Viewing ExperienceThis summer saw Bournemouth Oceanarium open their new £1.6m penguin exhibit. This ambitious project is the largest expansion in the centers history and was over 5 years in planning. The build saw the size of the center increase by over a third with the centre piece of the new building, a penguin beach enclosure that allows visitors to get up close to the new Humboldt penguins on display.

The designers wanted to allow all visitors to the exhibit to have as clear a view as possible to the penguins on display, in particular the thousands of small children that pass through the center. Traditionally the walls of such an exhibit were made of a solid material meaning children had to be lifted

to the top of the wall to see the display. The solution was to use toughened laminated glass balustrades to line the perimeter, allowing even the smallest visitors to clearly see the penguins on display.

When glazing contractors Beaumont Rose were deciding on the specification of glass, they knew that it had to be strong enough to prevent breakages that could injure visitors or the penguins on display, as well as being able to remain as free as possible from general scratches caused by the 250,000 plus annual visitors allowing for the best possible viewing experience.

ESG were happy to supply 21.5mm clear toughened laminated panels to fit into Beaumont Roses bottom rail fixings, as well as a notched and drilled panel to create a gate for the keepers to enter the enclosure.

Scott Sinden, Managing Director of ESG, said ‘We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to supply our glass to yet another animal exhibit, it’s a testament to the quality of our glass and its strength that we are supplying another job where these factors are paramount. We know the superb workmanship of Beaumount Rose will ensure that glass installation is keeping to the high standards the rest of the project has been finished to’. www.esg.glass – 01376 520061 www.beaumontrose.co.uk – 0208 879 1056

Heidi Westcar says, ‘My client wanted an elegant, bright and light-filled kitchen space; the emphasis was very much on space and maximising the light and views. As such, we first implemented some very significant structural changes, which included extending the length of the room, adding a lantern roof and no less than 7 sets of beautiful French doors.

‘The client was keen to avoid an overly ‘kitcheny kitchen’ and also wanted to achieve an easy movement between the core of the kitchen

and the informal seating areas, which we created by opening up the rooms internally. Specifying Caesarstone for the kitchen and beyond was just one of the ways we realised this – using it for the island, but also for the runs of surfaces throughout the wider space and into the boot room meant that a beautiful sense of fluidity was achieved.’

One of Caesarstone’s best-selling Classico colours, Misty Carrara has the ability to enhance a wide range of schemes and looks as good with hand painted cabinetry as it does with natural wood.

Commenting on her client’s choice of Misty Carrara, Heidi says, ‘My client wanted to use Caesarstone from the beginning – she liked the subtlety of Misty’s colouring and, as her objective was to create a very classic, elegant kitchen space, thought it was a timeless and practical choice.’

The kitchen’s island features a chamfered profile, whilst the surrounding surfaces have been finished simply.

Heidi comments, ‘We deliberately wanted to give the island’s profile a more detailed, decorative appearance, as it seemed in keeping with the island’s status as a key focal point within the kitchen. However, I was very conscious that my client wanted to stay away from that ‘ornate look’, so when it came to the profiles for the rest of the surfaces we left them plain and simple – and as a result, the island commands just the right amount of wow-factor.’

Heidi adds that the practicality and durability of Caesarstone also influenced her client’s decision. Manufactured from 93% natural materials and virtually resistant to scratches and stains, it is guaranteed for 15 years from installation – meaning that when it comes to creating timeless, ‘forever’ kitchens – Caesarstone really is an excellent choice.

Heidi comments, ‘As a designer, you obviously want to use products and materials that are aesthetically pleasing. However, it’s also essential that whatever you specify can also stand up to day-in, day-out useage. And Caesarstone is very resistant to pretty much everything that anyone could subject it to – there never seems to be any after-installation issues and I confidently tell clients they won’t have to worry about spillages or specialist maintenance.’

Heidi is also a fan of Caesarstone’s latest Supernatural colours, saying, ‘For clients that love the look and feel of marble, but whom are put off by its high maintenance demands, Caesarstone’s Supernatural series is ideal. At present, the prevailing trend is very much for organic, natural surfaces that will look as good in ten years’ time as on the day they’re installed. And colours such as Misty Carrara and the new Supernatural palette do this very well indeed. Now, all I need is for Caesarstone to create quartz that emulates the look of grey oak!’www.caesarstone.co.uk

New Remote Flush Buttons From Geberit – Where Will You Site Yours?

More than half of UK householders would locate the flush away from the traditional area behind the toilet, given the opportunity to do so, new research has revealed. As many as 30% of us would prefer to site the flush to the left or right of the WC, rather than directly behind it. Almost as many people again are keen on the idea of siting it by the bathroom door, ready for flushing on their way out.“Just because the flush button has before now always been found behind the WC, doesn’t mean this is where it always has to be,” comments Rafaella De Vittorio, Marketing Director at Geberit, which conducted the research. “In many cases being able to site the flush away from the WC offers greater flexibility of design. “The launch of the Geberit Type01 and Type10 flush buttons gives homeowners the freedom to position the flush within 1.7metres of the toilet, be it for practical or aesthetics reasons. For complete co-ordination with any style of bathroom, the Type01 remote flush buttons come in three colours and for both single and dual flush, while five different versions of the Type10 remote flush buttons are available.” www.geberit.co.uk

Sublimated Trascenda Is Permanently PatternedGlass mosaic and decorative solid surfaces specialist, Trend, has launched its new Trascenda agglomerate range, with integrated patterns inspired by the finest natural marble, childhood memories and weathered materials at its 19th century Orsoni smalti workshop. Created using cutting-edge dye sublimation techniques, the distinctive designs are embedded into the surface of Trend’s slimline granite, quartz, porcelain or even recycled glass composite sheets, so that permanent images are transferred into the material. The host agglomerate sheet retains all of its technical properties, so these beautiful surfaces are non-porous, low maintenance and resistant to heat, impact, scratch, stains and chemical cleaners.

The Trend Trascenda collection is available to special order from Granite Transformations showrooms, with the added bonus of a full installation service, as well as independent Trend stockists. The dye sublimation process has ample scope for new design collections to augment the initial launch and bespoke decorative finishes for commercial and residential applications. Indeed, leading hotel chain Sheraton has already commissioned a custom design for a Kid’s Club hotel facility in Orlando, Florida, featuring sinuous water-effect flooring in place of high-maintenance carpet.

The standard Trascenda range currently comprises three distinctive design collections, each with a series of theme-linked patterns that have been ‘tattooed’ onto Trend Polar Ice, Pietra Serena or Ivory slab, their neutral tones providing a subtle backdrop for the subdued patterns:

Elements Of Light – eight colourways inspired by patterns of light and weathered materials at the historic Orsoni furnace, including Imperial Blue that reflects molten enamel colours, Rusty evoking rusted work tools and Weathered taken from time-worn wooden barrels.

Memories – six designs reflecting treasured memories of Trend people and images that capture Italian family life, including Kiss The Chef evoking handwritten cookery notes, Bottles and Pots & Pans graphically depicting regular kitchen items and Numbers with its blocked numerals.Classic & Remastered – four naturalistic patterns based on the most precious varieties of marble quarried in Italy, among the most luxurious in the world, like classic Carrara with its greyish-white ground and feathery veining or Calacatta with more dramatic veins and golden undertones.

These studio-designed patterns are offered on tough quarter-inch thick slab over 3 metres long and in a range of seven square and rectangular tiles, between 30cm x 30cm and 120cm x 120cm, for walls and flooring. Applications include kitchen worktops and splashbacks, bathroom panels, domestic and medium-traffic commercial floors, wall liners and custom-made furniture. Waterproof and mould-resistant, Trend sublimated panels are also perfect for lining out showers and wet rooms, providing elegant, seamless alternatives to tiles.

The use of water-based dyes and recyclable raw materials further ensures Trascenda has minimal impact on the environment, especially as the slimline material can be installed over existing tiles and other surfaces, with no ripping out or wastage for landfill.

Across the collections, the subtle colours and patterns are in keeping with the current mood for neutral shades, combined with distinctive designs not previously seen on this type of composite material. With its naturalistic patterns, Trascenda offers a highly practical alternative to classic marble finishes, with no worries about sealing, scratching and staining; for kitchen stylists, it enables statement splashbacks and elegantly contrasting island units, against regular plain and textured Trend agglomerate; whilst in wet areas it affords elements of light, shadows and rich enamels for stunning, water-resistant, grout-free surfaces.

The exciting scope presented for bespoke agglomerate surfaces, particularly for architects, interior designers and property developers, is exemplified by the Sheraton Hotels project. Using its in-house resources, Trend was able to create a water-effect pattern and embed this onto eight full-size agglomerate slabs, using an endothermic or heat absorbing process, then cut these into a sinuous river-like shape and install it onto a Kid’s Club floor. Previously, this effect was achieved with carpeting, which had a comparatively low installation cost, but required very high-end maintenance, whereas the Trascenda solution offers considerable operational and aesthetic benefits.

Silent Students

Interiors which can generate the most unacceptable noise and echoes are most likely to be those where young people gather for work, play and socialising, such as schools, leisure centres and swimming pools. Fortunately, there now exists a high performance solution which many architects specify in the form of Troldtekt acoustic panels which not only reduce reverberation but are also aesthetically pleasing. This solution has been used for Danish Social and Healthcare College which has relocated to the Aarhus suburb of Skejby. In particular, the ‘sitting stairs’ and galleried walkways offer good views of life in the complex while emphasising interest and human scale. Here, natural wood Troldtekt panels with a fine structure have been installed throughout the College to ensure good acoustics in the open and high ceilinged rooms while creating a particularly attractive and warm atmosphere.Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. www.troldtekt.co.uk

Stunning Round Bath In DuPont™ Corian® From CD UK

CD UK and solid surface specialist fabricator Solidity have used DuPont™ Corian® in an outstanding bespoke bathroom design for a private client in London.

This stunning scheme by Kirsten Wain at West One Bathrooms has a round bath as its centrepiece, with walls seamlessly clad in feature colour panels. Unable to find what the customer wanted

off the shelf, Kirsten contacted Solidity, to manufacture and install a bespoke solution. Installation was challenging as the bathroom was accessed via a spiral staircase, requiring the bath to be delivered in sections and constructed in situ.

Impact lighting and sculptural shapes for the hand basin add to the scheme’s distinctiveness and both designer and customer were delighted with the finished project.

Kirsten Wain said: “Corian® has amazing versatility, making it exciting to work with for a designer. We were impressed with the technical capability of Solidity who were behind the creation of these beautiful shapes, which worked so well in the small space available.” www.cdukltd.co.uk

The Blues Kitchen has opened in Brixton, London offering a proven formula of late night live music, authentic BBQ food and an amazingly large selection of bourbons. Located in what was once the old Electric Social premises, the

cavernous ground floor space is dominated by a flamboyant faience-fronted, ceramic tiled bar, which has been designed and hand-manufactured by specialist tile company Craven Dunnill Jackfield. This contemporary installation of Victorian

styled ceramic tiles breathes new life into this traditional art form and highlights the practicality of ceramics in a bar environment.

The faience* tiled bar stretches 10 metres long and is set off against a back-drop of white and blue brick shaped ceramic tiles and amber dados, which define arched recessed areas. The venue promotes its own BBQ and drink specialities by writing on the glazed tiles, which can easily be wiped clean and fresh adverts promoted. The faience tiles at the front of the bar date

back to the 1880’s in style and are hand-made at Craven Dunnill Jackfield’s works up in Shropshire. There are five different designs of tile which clad both the bar and five floor-to-ceiling pillars. Each of the central, large green tiles measure 245x 600mm and are convex, weighing around 10kg each.

The deeply textured relief design dates to the late 19th century and features a repeating urn motif; these tiles are bordered by four styles of decorative blue and amber coloured dado tiles. The same designs are featured on the 2.5m tall pillars, which are capped with deep capital tiles, decorated with an acanthus leaf design.

Craven Dunnill Jackfield employs a unique team of expert ceramists, acclaimed for their specialist knowledge and experience. The relief tiles are made using hand carved plaster moulds and decorated with metal oxide glazes, which craze upon firing to create an authentic aged effect. For the large tiles, featuring the urns, each required 200g of glaze to achieve the desired depth of colour and took two people to dip the pieces into a large vat of glaze. These were then gently lifted and carefully stacked into the kilns and fired over night at 1040 degrees Celsius.

The Blues Kitchen is part of the Colombo Group and this is the third such venue to open. It is known for its live Blues, Soul and Bluegrass music, Texan BBQ food and wide range of bourbons and cocktails. The interior style is eclectic, successfully combining Moroccan décor with contemporary textiles, commemorative stained glass windows and extensive reclaimed materials.

DuPont™ Corian® From CD UK Shines As Luxury Lighting

Wimbledon based design studio Caxton Rhode have unveiled their latest work of art, a solid light installation made from Corian® for a luxury Chelsea apartment. Rob Bartlett, Creative Director of Caxton Rhode, was commissioned by Annie Friend of Anniemation Interiors to complete the brief.

At nearly a metre in diameter, and completed from concept to creation in only four weeks, this dramatic piece of wall lighting perfectly

fulfilled the requirement that the lighting design should reflect the sumptuous feel and finish that was applied throughout the scheme. Known as a “tailor of interiors”, Rob Bartlett opted for Glacier Ice White Corian® from CD UK and fabricated by Zone Creations for the material’s durability and beauty.

The product’s translucent qualities and malleability made it the perfect choice for this design, delivering hotel standard lighting for one client’s exclusive use.

To maintain the material’s integrity and ensure a flawless distribution of light, the patterned fascia was milled directly into a single solid sheet.

An outer shell was constructed from sections of the same material, before being bonded and polished to create one unified and seam-free piece. A spiral of remote-controlled LED’s provide a dimmable, true-white light from within. www.cdukltd.co.uk

CCL Wetrooms has a range of popular Linear Screed Drains including a wall drain option and a stunning Stone-Infill Grill, which offers a sleek, contemporary finish to wetroom installations. At a market leading height of only 67mm, the drain ensures that even the highest of water flow rates can be achieved and managed effectively on concrete floors, which are widely used in the construction of modern houses. With the shallowest trap available in the UK, the Linear Screed Drain is ideal for the upper floors of a building where the insulation and concrete screed is much shallower in depth than the ground floor foundations.

The drain incorporates a unique waterless trap, which is formed of a spring-loaded mechanism and keeps the trap sealed when not in use. This ensures that even when the shower is left unused for prolonged periods, the trap cannot dry out, making it ideal for situations such as guest en-suites, holiday properties or student accommodation. The smart design of the linear trough also allows the waste position to be rotated through 360° to avoid all obstructions under the floor and enables easy installation in all sizes and configurations of wet rooms. Plus, thanks to a uniquely adjustable stainless steel grill, any size or depth of stone, tiles or marble can be used alongside the grill, without the need to raise the whole floor. www.ccl-wetrooms.co.uk

Shackerley has demonstrated the versatility of its Sureclad® ventilated cladding offer by supplying an innovative engineered stone façade system for a challenging installation at Kew Bridge West, an exclusive development of 336 luxury apartments in North London.

The Lancashire based cladding specialist supplied 2400m2 of fully prefabricated Sureclad® engineered stone cladding in a natural limestone colourway and honed finish to provide a premium quality aesthetic for the lower storeys of the nine buildings that form the complex, designed by Stockwool and developed by St James, part of the Berkeley Group.

Two circular towers called for smooth rounded façades and Shackerley’s Sureclad® Hang On system was customised to cater for large format curved panels, cut to a radius from engineered stone blocks. In addition, elegantly faceted façades were required to clad curved elevations of adjacent buildings.

Shackerley and façade installation contractor Stanmore worked very closely together, developing bespoke solutions at every stage, from the façade designs to the meticulous scheduling and palletisation of the prefabricated system. Stanmore’s installers also visited Shackerley to receive expert training in the use of the Sureclad® system.

Construction Director at St James, Brian Paterson, commented: “Shackerley’s system was brought to our attention when we came to value engineer this project. By switching the engineered stone specification to Sureclad®, we’ve

benefitted from a more flexible and lighter façade solution than originally planned and from very substantial cost savings, whilst still achieving our architects’ original design intention. We’re delighted with the results.” For further details on the Sureclad® system please contact Shackerley on 0800 783 0391 or visit www.shackerley.com

Morley-IAS Introduces Some Creature Comforts To Chester ZooIn 1930, George Mottershead bought Oakfield House in Chester, along with seven acres of land, for the grand total of £3,500. He then visited a zoo in Manchester and what he saw that day inspired him to create ‘a zoo without bars’. George opened Chester Zoo in 1931 with his family and a small group of animals, never forgetting the vow he made. By the time he died in 1978, aged 84, Mottershead’s dream of a ‘zoo without bars’ was well and truly flourishing.

Fast forward to 2015 and with more than 12,500 animals in 125 acres of award-winning zoological gardens, Chester Zoo is one of the world’s top attractions of its kind. 1.4 million people visit every year and its mission is to be a major force in conserving biodiversity. The latest attraction is Chester Zoo’s Islands, which aims to transport visitors to the South East Asian islands of Panay, Papua, Bali, Sumba, Sumatra and Sulawesi. Work began on the £40m, 60,000m² development in 2013 and it has taken almost two years and thousands of working hours to build.

The largest indoor zoo exhibit in UK history, Monsoon Forest is the centrepiece of the Islands and the second phase of the project to be completed. Islands gives visitors the chance to take a walk or boat ride past turtles, Sumatran tigers, cassowary birds and many other species, as well as through bamboo copses and rice paddies. It is also home to the Sundra gharial, one of the world’s largest crocodiles, whose habitat is cleverly set out so these remarkable creatures can be seen both above and under the water through spectacular glass viewing windows.

Crown House Technologies (part of Laing O’Rourke) is the M&E contractor for the Islands project and sub-contracted Morecambe based Cook Fire & Security Ltd to provide the fire detection system for the Monsoon Forest. Joe Weiss, Technical Director at Cook Fire & Security, states, ‘Over the last 14 years we have become one of the leading installers of state-of-the-art solutions throughout the north-west of England and beyond. We have been involved in some highly prestigious projects but the Monsoon Forest was a unique environment and required some significant thought about the best way to protect, staff, visitors and, of course, the animals.’

A Honeywell D1 system allowed Cook Fire & Security to combine advanced audio management with a flexible architecture to deliver an advanced PA/VA solution at Monsoon Forest. Generally, this type of technology is utilised in public or larger buildings and, following the detection of smoke or fire, automated messages control the flow of people, allowing an orderly evacuation without panic. However – as animal welfare is at the very heart of Chester Zoo’s activities - one of the key priorities was to have a PA/VA system that could alert staff and visitors without causing distress to the

creatures living there. Joe Weiss comments, ‘Obviously, the animals are used to the sound of human voices, so we felt that a PA/VA system would be more appropriate than the type of loud siren commonly used.’

Monsoon Forest is entirely enclosed and with temperatures reaching highs of 80°F, this level of humidity meant that a great deal of consideration had to be given to the most suitable fire detection system. A solution based around the Morley-IAS ZX5SE control panel was installed in the keeper’s section, as it is intuitive to use and easy to install, network, configure, maintain and expand. The public areas, however, required a solution that could offer high levels of false alarm prevention while blending in with the tropical surroundings.

Explaining the thought process, Weiss says, ‘Due to the height of the roof, access for installation and maintenance of a conventional or addressable system would have been problematic. Also, the high levels of moisture would have also been a problem and could have triggered false alarms. Therefore, an aspirating smoke detection system was the most suitable option.

A Honeywell All-Spec system was chosen and Martyn Keenan, Business Manager (North West) for Morley-IAS says, ‘As a universal air sampling device for a broad range of applications, All-Spec makes it possible to achieve a cost effective solution in accordance with EN 54-20. This allows the devices to be used in areas where other smoke detectors and air sampling smoke detection systems are no longer suitable, such as Monsoon Forest. By putting water traps on all pipework going back to the control panels, an extra level of false alarm detection has been achieved.’

A highly innovative way of installing the system was employed, as the pipework was fitted when the roof interior was on the ground and then hoisted into position. This eliminated the need for access equipment and ensures that the environment will not need to be disturbed during any planned maintenance. Aesthetics were also important and white plastic was used to ensure that the system blended into the overall appearance of the roof structure.

Westmorland And Notifier Meet The University Challenge

For some lucky university students, gone are the days when they would reside in ramshackle accommodation in the less salubrious parts of towns and cities. Nowadays they have an opportunity to live in purpose built high-end residences that offer a wealth of innovative features providing everything they need for the best student experience. A leading example of this type of accommodation is Damside. A £3m five-storey studio development located in Lancaster city centre. Prior to work beginning on the refurbishment of the building, Kendal based Westmorland Fire and Security was asked to tender for the design and build of a life safety system that combined state-of-the-art fire detection with minimal potential for unwanted alarms. The advanced Pearl system offers best in class performance, scalability and functionality including a host of programming options and loop devices that can be used by an experienced fire system designer to minimise the risk of unwanted alarms, even in challenging environments where there is a high likelihood of them occurring.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of Westmorland Fire and Security’s work at Damside is the way that that it has integrated Pearl with an automatic opening vent (AOV) system. AOV’s are designed to reduce smoke build-up, helping to provide a safer escape route for occupants and access for fire and rescue personnel. When a detector or call point is triggered, the AOV system will open actuators, windows or vents to create ventilation in the escape routes. This clears smoke for people leaving the building and vents smoke out of the area that has been triggered.

With a ventilation shaft running through the middle of the building, each floor has a vent, which can be controlled by the Pearl system. All inputs and outputs go into the panel, with complex cause and effect options to give fully automated operation and status indication. www.notifierfiresystems.co.uk

Aspirating Proves A Cool Solution For Lynas Foodservice

A new Food Outlet for the largest family-operated food service distributor in Ireland is demonstrating the versatility of the Securiton aspirating smoke detection (ASD) system to work in the harshest of environments. Lynas Foodservice has grown to become a business with a turnover in excess of £100 million, employing over 370 staff and offering a product line which extends to more than 6,000 items. Given that many of these products are frozen or chilled, central to the new outlet are the chiller and blast freezer.

FSP Security Systems, a Northern Ireland based specialist in commercial fire and security systems, was employed to deliver a fire detection solution for the new outlet. At the Firex International 2015 exhibition, Patol announced its appointment as the distributor in the UK and Ireland for the Securiton range of ASD. FSP representatives visited the Patol stand and were impressed by the capabilities of the Securiton 535-1 technology, coupled with the extensive experience that Patol has in providing fire detection solutions for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. FSP worked closely with Patol to develop a solution which met the specific requirements of the Lynas Foodservice project.

The ASD 535 system is EN54-20 Class A, B & C approved and uses scattered light technology to detect even the slightest increase in smoke concentration. It is flexible, with replaceable PCB’s and sensors, and is able to match the requirements of different applications through five programmable alarm levels ranging in sensitivity from 0.002% obscuration per metre to 10% obscuration per metre. It can accommodate up to 250 networked panels to cover up to 8,500 metres using repeater modules. Ease of installation is also a feature, with drilling of only one size hole of 8.5mm required due to the different size sampling hole clips available. Other options are available from Patol in the Securiton 535 ASD range, including a two pipe, two sensor detection panel which can provide protection for up to 300 metres per pipe. www.patol.co.uk

Hauraton Drainage Systems At Vangarde Shopping Park, Monks Cross, YorkThe award winning Vangarde Shopping Park located a mile or so North East of the historic city centre of York opened for business in April 2014. The Park has over 31,527m² of retail and leisure space, including an 8,556m² John Lewis, a 9,300m² Marks & Spencer and a 2.790m² Next outlet. The Marks & Spencer store is one of the retailer’s greenest to date, with a 60,000 litre retaining tank for recycled rainwater, two green living walls, totalling over 167m² designed to attract wildlife and retain heat, electric car charging points, refurbished trolleys. The store is also part-powered by 600 solar panels - a first for Marks & Spencer.

With 1,340 free car parking spaces, extensive pedestrian and large service areas, the design of the surface water drainage scheme was a major consideration for main contractor, Caddick Limited. Over 1,700metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® drainage channel were eventually installed by ground workers Howard Civil Engineering Limited during the three month installation process.

1,500metres of RECYFIX® PLUS 100, 150 and 200 channels fitted with Class D400 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings secured with bar and bolt locking were used in the main car park areas. The size installed depended on the areas to be drained – for example, the larger sized channels were installed in the 80metre runs so fewer outlets were needed. The paved pedestrian

areas were drained with over 200 metres of RECYFIX® PRO 100 drainage channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® gratings. The material PA-GF, used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight.

Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its black colour. The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.

As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The RECYFIX® PRO and PLUS channel component is made from tough, 100% recycled Polypropylene - Polyethylene (PP-PE). The channels arrive on site with the gratings factory fitted.www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Kemper’s Towering Achievement At Clifton Suspension Bridge

Kemper System’s Kemperol cold liquid applied waterproofing membranes have played a vital role in protecting the iconic towers of the Grade I listed Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol as part of a refurbishment project. The scheme involved repointing and restoration of the sandstone structures, along with cathodic protection for the Bath Stone pillars and painting of the bridge chains. Specialist contractor, Rateavon Ltd, was appointed to waterproof the towers’ platforms and refurbish the gutters for each tower, selecting Kemperol 2K-PUR and V210 to carry out the work.Rateavon began by removing the existing bitumen coating from the towers’ cast iron gutters, using Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR to replace it. There are limited falls to the gutters and are prone to standing water so the Kemperol system was chosen for its durability in these conditions and the longevity it offers with a BBA-accredited 25 year service life. The contractor also selected Kemperol 2K-PUR for its compatibility with the zinc primer used to prepare the cast iron substrate and ease of application to the vertical surfaces. For the tower platforms, Rateavon selected Kemper System’s Kemperol V210, carrying out the refurbishment as an overlay of the existing mastic asphalt substrate. Used for maintenance access, the platforms sit above the towers’ electrical infrastructure, so ensuring a durable and leak-free surface is critical. Rateavon raised the cable trays on each section of the platforms to enable the application of the Kemperol V210 resin. The resin is cold applied, without the fire risk of hot works, in a single wet-on-wet process that ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece; and cures to form a flexible monolithic membrane that is UV stable and bonds directly to the substrate. www.kempersystem.co.uk

Fully Opening Jet Cox Barrel Vaults Enlighten Wandsworth Primary Pupils

In harmony with the Department for Education’s desire for schools to offer a healthy and sustainable environment in which to learn and thrive, the gymnasium to a brand new school, the Floreat Primary School in the London Borough of Wandsworth, has been constructed with five fully opening rooflights from Jet Cox Limited, offering natural illumination and ventilation.Jet Cox supplied the five barrel vault rooflights as a prime example of its widely specified Coxdome range. The oblong upstands to the five rooflights have been weathered into a high performance felt system covering the well-insulated flat roof construction. In turn the multiwall polycarbonate make up to the rooflights’ glazing offers performance to comply with current Part L requirements and help retain the heat within the gymnasium during colder winter months. Meanwhile their contribution to the overall energy equation is dependent on the extent to which their high level of daylight transmission avoids the need for the use of artificial illumination, while their delivery of fresh air to the occupied space precludes the need of mechanical ventilation. www.jet-cox.co.uk

Sika Liquid Plastics Soluion Allows Asda Store To Remain Open During Roof RefurbA popular Scunthorpe supermarket has recently benefited from a complete roof refurbishment using a Sika Liquid Plastics Built-Up Roof waterproofing system. The Asda store had to remain open throughout the project, requiring expert planning by Northampton-based contractor Ice Roofing.

The building, originally constructed in 1976, was suffering from water ingress and the roof was in urgent need of repair. To ensure that the store could remain trading throughout the project, the client required a cold applied waterproofing option. Managed by Uplands Retail Ltd, the contract involved a tight timescale to refurbish several of the supermarket’s large roof areas, totalling 2000sq m.

Ice Roofing, a Sika Liquid Plastics Quality Assured contractor, already had a good reputation with Asda thanks to a number of previous jobs and were the obvious choice for the job.

Gareth Davies, Ice Roofing, explained: “We knew that our partnership with Sika Liquid Plastics would give us the advantage of additional expertise when specifying a product for the project.

“The team at Sika conducted a detailed survey, including thermal imaging using the latest technology, allowing us to see where the real problem patches where. This enabled us to reduce the area of roof we would have to completely strip back to the steel deck, which was really significant in keeping disruption to a minimum.”

A further challenge presented itself when asbestos was found in areas of the felt that needed to be stripped away. Ice Roofing brought in the experts to remove the existing substrate containing asbestos, while maintaining the integrity of the store’s waterproofing and complying with strict HSE standards.

Completed in just 10 weeks, two teams of three first increased the height of the roof by increasing the insulation thickness around various complex details. Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Gamma 20 roof coating system in Slate Grey was then applied over the entire roof area. The cold applied, zero flame, zero heat Built-Up Roof system allowed the store to remain operational throughout the works; a key benefit for the local community.

A mineralised walkway was also installed to enable ease of access for future maintenance work.

Gareth added: “We worked fast and smart to deliver a seamless finish on the roof, with the liquid system offering ease of application around plant and penetrations. The superior 20-year guarantee, signed off by Sika Liquid Plastics when works were completed, sealed the deal for the client.”

Decothane is available in the UK from Sika Liquid Plastics. For further information visit http://gbr.liquidplastics.sika.com or call the Enquiry Line on 0800 112 3826.

Stunning Roof For London Pub With New Sika Sarnafil Self Adhered MembraneSpecialist roofing contractor Hambro Roofing has recently completed works to a new JD Wetherspoon pub in London, known as ‘The Mossy Well’, which now boasts 500sq m of Sika Sarnafil Self Adhered membrane.

JD Wetherspoon has spent just over £3 million developing the outlet on Muswell Hill, which opened in October.

Extensive refurbishment and adaptations to the building needed to take place due to the existing roofs being in such a bad state. Essex-based Sika Sarnafil contractor, Hambro Roofing, was awarded the contract after proposing to use Sika Sarnafil single ply for the flat roof repairs.

The refurbishment comprised of complex work on the existing pitched roofs, lead flashings, guttering and renewal of the flat roof. A section of new barrel roof was also required in the centre of the building; comprising of flat, vertical and soffit detailing.

The client required the new roof area to look like a traditional zinc roof covering. Sika Sarnafil G410-15 FSA was specified for the job, with décor profiling to match the surrounding roofs. Ideal for the job, the system is lightweight, cost effective and offers a flawless finish.

Built on Hambro Roofing’s previous experience this was a highly successful project without any major setbacks and completed in the given timeframe.

The barrel roof was also fitted with SarnaTherm insulation over a SarnaVap vapour barrier. Sikalastic Liquid Applied Membrane was used on the detailing around the guttering to achieve a seamless waterproof finish.

Jon Hammersley, Hambro Roofing Director, explained: “The works were incredibly challenging as there was a vast amount of awkward detailing including vertical fascia and soffit works. However, the new Self Adhered membrane allowed us to work fast and make the roof look fantastic. Sarnafil remains our preferred partner when it comes to single ply roofing because it is so reliable and gives the best results.”

“We had to work to a tight deadline in order to get the premises open on time which was achieved with our own in house labour force and great workmanship with the product,” he added.

Feedback was enormously positive on completion of the project. The client was particularly impressed by the effectiveness of the Self Adhered solution and the speed in which the project was completed, resulting in a stunning roof that fulfilled the architect’s vision.

Complex Hospital Building For Orthopaedic Services Is Constructed In Less Than Four MonthsA highly complex, 4,200sqm two-storey ward and theatre building at Royal Stoke University Hospital has been constructed by Portakabin Hire in less than four months to help meet the increasing demand for orthopaedic services.

The £13.5 million contract is the largest in the 52-year history of the Portakabin Group’s Hire Division and the project is one of its most challenging schemes in terms of programme and site constraints.

The structure for the high quality patient facility was installed in just 18 days which included weekend working to minimise disruption to the hospital’s service provision as there were fully operational wards immediately adjacent to the new building. This construction solution allowed the project to be built in the shortest possible time to the benefit of patient care.

The purpose-designed scheme, which will be in use for the next five years, has provided 56 new in-patient beds, two large state-of-the-art, clean air theatres for all orthopaedic procedures, recovery room, ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ utilities, single rooms with en-suite bathrooms, staff changing rooms, reception, kitchenette, offices, 33-person ‘crash team’ lift, and an integral plant room.

Commenting on the project, John Simpson, Director of Corporate Services at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, said “This type of construction allowed us to benefit from a much shorter delivery programme so we could have the new facility up and running more quickly, meeting the increasing demand for services and enhancing patients’ experience.” “Whilst the building is constructed to permanent standards, its modular construction gives us greater flexibility as the facilities can be dismantled and removed if service needs change. We had an extremely tight timescale to deliver this complex healthcare building for the relocation of clinical services – but I am delighted to report that this was achieved.”

“The new facilities have been very well received by patients and staff. There is excellent light, space, décor and infection control. Portakabin Hire successfully installed the building next to the main hospital with minimal impact on service provision. This required detailed logistical planning and

the whole installation operation was carried out with military precision by a superb site team. The final design is extremely good.”

Jeanette Carter, Royal Stoke Ward Manager, said, “The overall design and layout of the building are fantastic and the interior is very welcoming. We have a lot more space, particularly around beds, to facilitate patient contact and to accommodate any equipment we need. Everything fits into the ward space really well and there is better storage. The wards are airy and the design features – such as integral blinds for the windows – make infection control much easier. We also have more side rooms available which help to reduce waiting times. There has been a lot of positive feedback from staff and patients since we moved into the new building.”

The new Orthopaedic Unit is constructed from 124 steel-framed modules up to 14m long and weighing up to 9 tonnes each. These were installed complete with wall finishes, internal partitioning, mechanical and electrical services and flooring already in place, further reducing work and disruption on this busy hospital site. The modules are built to permanent standards, comply with current Building Regulations and have a design life of 60 years.

The hiring of modular accommodation is a fast, flexible and cost-effective way for healthcare providers to expand or relocate services, particularly on constrained hospital sites and funded from revenue rather than capital budget streams. The approach also gives NHS trusts greater flexibility as the facilities can be dismantled and removed if patient needs change.

Complete, fully-fitted buildings can be delivered in a fraction of the time of a site-based construction solution. Critically, buildings can be installed with far less disruption to patient care and the solution is much safer and quieter as fitting out can also be carried out off site.

Portakabin Hire provides accommodation for wards, recovery suites, dialysis units, diagnostics, out-patient departments and treatment centres. All the hospital facilities are constructed to the latest healthcare best practice design standards. For further information about modular healthcare buildings for interim and permanent applications, visit www.portanews.co.uk, email [email protected] or call 0845 401 0010.

Last year Biker carried out a sizeable prestigious project for Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn with Red Grandis TEC and Red Grandis sawn timber supplied in various sizes and shapes for the many doors and windows involved. Red Grandis is a 100% FSC® certified, EUTR-compliant plantation grown hardwood. A clear, uniform timber with excellent workability, it can be easily stained or painted, whilst its versatility makes it suitable for high-end internal and external applications.

Patchett Homes also an engineered timber convert For Patchett Homes, its many self-build projects and conservation contracts require a variety of joinery applications. The company, has opted for Red Grandis instead of Utile or Sapele, and is adding value to its business as a result. In addition to the quality of the Red Grandis species itself, it is the protective Grandis Oak Stain, exclusive to Teknos, which provides the finishing touch, delivering the look of oak at a fraction of the cost. The Timbmet - Teknos partnership not only delivers a rich oak appearance: it also protects against weathering, UV degradation, mould and fungal attack. Fully water-based, this finish reduces harmful emissions and disposal issues, and ensures rapid application and fast drying. www.timbmet.com

Ideal Commercial Boilers Provides Optimum Environment For Priceless Artwork

Two Imax Xtra 480kW floor standing condensing gas boilers from Ideal Commercial have been installed at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool to deliver carefully controlled, high efficiency space heating

whilst reducing running costs and emissions. As strict temperature and humidity levels are required within the gallery areas to ensure the paintings do not succumb to issues like cracks and warping, it was vital that the

new boilers be extremely reliable to ensure that a constant room temperature of 21°C (plus or minus 1°C) would be maintained at all times. In addition to its compact footprint, the Imax Xtra has been specially designed to allow ease of access to the boiler’s interior via the sides and the top of the unit, ensuring future maintenance is straightforward even within the limited space. www.idealcommercialboilers.com

Dupont™ Tyvek® Reflex Protects New Build Apartments In Torquay Against A Wide Range Of Coastal Weather Conditions

Torquay is known for its balmy summer weather and pleasant autumns. What is less appreciated is the weather during winter, where the location means that severe storms can hammer the coastline. This high level of wind and water is one of several key reasons that Cornwall Timber Build specified DuPont™ Tyvek® Reflex for a new build timber frame apartment building in the town, on the site of the former Lansdowne Hotel. DuPont™ Tyvek® Reflex is a metallised version of the leading advanced breather membrane offering very low emissivity, and thus helps to protect the structure not only during the winter but also during the summer months, where the product’s unique nature and long term thermal performance helps to maintain a comfortable interior environment. The building is set on higher ground with impressive

west facing views and has a contemporary specification that is also in keeping with town’s character. Designed to be both elegant and sustainable, the structure features 14 units over 1100 square metres and 480 square metres of DuPont™ Tyvek® Reflex have been installed to the interstitial wall cavities of the timber frame, which has been made with sustainably sourced Scandinavian wood. www. tyvek.co.uk

Thermoblock Premieres In Leicester Square Project

Projects

The refurbishment of a landmark listed property on London’s Leicester Square has seen Marmox Thermoblocks specified in very large quantities for an unusual application. Number 48 Leicester Square is being completely redeveloped behind the retained 1920s stone façade. There will also be accommodation on a newly created upper storey, behind what is described as a fresh interpretation of the traditional mansard roof. Pivotal to this radical reconstruction has been the need to stabilize and strengthen the outer elevations which had been badly weakened by previous alterations over the past century. With a full facade retention structure in place and the basement area framed by a retaining wall, the project team's solution involved raising an internal inner blockwork wall using aerated concrete. This is intended to improve the thermal performance of the exterior elevations as well as their regularity and soundness, while taking up the minimum interior space. As part of this, the project team elected to make use of the Marmox Thermoblocks as a means of minimizing heat loss at the critical floor wall junction. The 600 mm long insulation units incorporate mini columns of high strength, low conductivity concrete to support the load of the wall above while the low lambda value insulation virtually eliminates the path for cold-bridging. They are laid using normal bricklaying mortar with special Marmox Multibond sealant used to secure and seal the stepped joints while an integral layer of mesh on the upper and lower surfaces offers a good mortar bond for block-laying to continue in the conventional manner. In total over 1000 of the 640X140X65 mm Thermoblocks helped create a continuous horizontal thermal break beneath the new wall rising from the basement of 48 Leicester Square: ensuring it will meet the current Building Regulations and that the structure will endure for many decades to come. www.marmox.co.uk
