Benoy, the international award-winning studio of Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, has announced this week the launch of its exciting new scheme in Sofia, Bulgaria, Koza Square with developer Garanti Koza.

The 535,000m2 development will provide a new place for the residents of Sofia to entertain and dine. The project includes a two-story retail podium and a restaurant and café offer throughout the masterplan designed by Benoy. There will also be three residential towers, office space, a 300-Key hotel and serviced apartments and an entertainment centre.

The brief was to create a new hotspot for the city which would be the venue for all public celebrations. At the heart of Koza Square will be an artificial beach acting as the focal point, drawing people in with a dazzling water feature performance adding to the spectacle.

“Our instruction was to highlight the best of Sofia and offer those living in and visiting the city a new place to relax and enjoy. We achieved this by imagining the shopping and F&B components as parts of a metropolis rather than as extensions of the masterplan,” said Benoy Director Jacqueline Beckingham.

“The vision we have brought to this complements and raises the overall offer of Koza Square.”

By celebrating Sofia’s organic evolution as a city, each element is unique yet integrated in a cohesive blend. The elegant new build scheme has now completed the Concept Stage and is currently undergoing Detailed Design.

This is one of three projects Benoy is now doing with Garanti Koza. The developer is actively improving the mixed-use offer in Southeast Europe.

Eric Carlson tells us a little about this extraordinary project....

The ‘ideal garage’ was conceived to fit some specific characteristics about the contexts, people and lifestyle, praising the car collection as the treasure of the project.

The name “Garage 8” derived from the looping shape that maximises the visibility of the cars as much from the interior as from the exterior, while parked or driving around the house for pleasure. I imagined Garage-8 on a cliff site in Monaco, with direct access to one of the most famous Formula One race tracks and adjacent to diverse driving experiences on city streets, coastal roads and circuitous mountain drives. We positioned the car collection in the centre of the house and in between levels with glass floors allowing the automobiles to be seen from above, below and from all sides. “Garage 8” is created for an active family of car addicts that adore automobiles, it is designed so that each automobile can be admired when eating, sleeping, bathing, swimming, jogging and practicing their golf swing. Even when dressing they can choose their clothes, shoes, watches, cuff-links and jewellery and, of course, the car that goes with them.

When we designed the new archetype of showroom/museums for BMW in Paris, London and NY we discovered the importance of the lighting automobiles. For Garage-8 we integrated continuous lines of diffused lighting to create “swage lines” that highlight the contours and curves of the car bodies. “Garage 8” is designed to help people understand that architecture can be customised to their specific lifestyles and that any and all aspects of our lives can be made exceptional.

HLM has designed a modern, low energy, environmentally responsible passive house in Gorstan in Ross-Shire in the Scottish Highlands. Developed to take traditional Highland and rural design as inspiration, the new house (Tigh-na-Groit) reinterprets imaginatively traditional features whilst achieving the European Passivhaus standard to radically drive down energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Ross Barrett, Associate Director at HLM, said: “We think that this house best represents our ethos and mission to shape the built environment towards a more sustainable future as it tackles the problems of fuel poverty and carbon emissions in the most effective way: by minimising energy consumption.”

The Gorstan Passive house requires 80% less energy compared to the standard housing stock. This was achieved by: optimising the building’s form and orientation to reduce heat loss and maximise solar gain; providing super insulation with no thermal bridging; providing an airtight fabric and installing mechanical ventilation with 90% efficient heat recovery.

The house uses ‘passive heating’ by means of energy conservation and by using internal heat sources and solar gains. At the same time, the Gorstan Passive House is designed to ensure that occupants get outstanding performance.

“Internal pollutants are minimised and constant fresh air is supplied, ensuring excellent indoor air quality,” said Ross. “Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced in construction and operation; operational costs are minimised and overheating risk is minimised through advanced thermal modelling.”

Turner & Townsend, the global programme management and construction consultancy, has been appointed by Nissan to provide programme management services for the European rollout of its new showroom concept – The Nissan Retail Experience.

The programme will see the transformation of over 1,600 dealerships in 20 European countries to deliver a new retail environment. It is conceived as an extension of the internet experience, part of a seamless customer journey from the home to the dealership. In a bold move away from the traditional showroom, the new-look sites will operate without the conventional reception or formal sales desks.

Over a period of four years, Turner & Townsend will coordinate and monitor the roll-out of the new concept, maintaining quality and consistency in design and execution.

The appointment stems from a 30-year relationship with Nissan, in which Turner & Townsend has worked in partnership with the auto giant across the globe.

The University of London’s Grade II* listed landmark Portland stone building, Senate House featured in London’s largest annual festival of architecture and design, Open House London. On Saturday 19th September, Senate House

hosted informal tours, providing visitors with an insight into the construction of the 1930s building, its use over the years and its future.

Designed by British architect Charles Holden, who is also credited with the design of many of London’s Underground stations, Senate House was created to house what became the world’s largest purpose-built University. The landmark Art Deco building, which is one of the few buildings in London to boast original 1930s features, was the University’s first permanent home after a century of being housed in temporary premises.

King George V laid the foundation stone on 26 June 1933 and the building welcomed its first occupants in 1936. Senate House, consisting of 19 floors and standing 210 feet high, was the tallest secular building in Britain on completion.

It was constructed of the finest materials then available, including Portland stone, Travertine marble, English walnut and South American cypress. Acknowledged as a building of great architectural significance, it was listed as Grade II* in 1969. During the Second World War, Senate House was home to the Ministry of Information and inspired George Orwell’s description of the Ministry of Truth in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Many visitors are surprised to discover that the building is generally open to the public for a host of events, conferences and private functions. It is also a popular location for TV and film productions such as Batman Returns and Richard III.

It is also home to the world-famous Senate House Library, which houses Arts, Humanities and Social Science Research and Special Collections. Open House started as a small not-for-profit organisation, to promote public awareness of the capital’s building and design architecture.

As the government continues to set ambitious goals for the education sector, there is a growing demand to construct higher volumes of school buildings, at a faster pace and at a lower cost. But how can this be achieved?

With the demand for primary places beginning to feed through to secondary schools and the government’s rapid expansion of the private higher education sector, one thing is clear – many more schools are required to meet this demand.

But to meet the targets, considerations need to be given to the use of modern methods of construction. With only 63% of projects delivered on time and only 49% delivered to budget, traditional build fails to meet the major challenges facing the education sector. Offsite Construction and in particular light gauge steel, provides dramatically reduced build time and delivers education buildings at a lower cost – whilst not comprising on quality or whole-life performance.

Steve Thompson, Managing Director of EOS Facades explains why light gauge steel frame may just be the answer to the crisis facing the education sector.

Operating for over 10 years, EOS Facades has built a reputation for excellence in the design, manufacture and supply of a wide range of light gauge steel solutions, both component based and panelised. offsite constructionOffsite fabrication coupled with rapid onsite assembly makes steel a primary construction option.

Manufacture under factory-controlled, highly regulated conditions using the latest technology delivers precision engineered components. Steel can be custom manufactured to tight tolerances before delivery to site, enabling a quick assembly with zero waste. At EOS Facades the specialist design team work with the construction team to ensure that the steel frame design can be manufactured and erected safely and efficiently. The erection procedures can be planned accurately using BIM 3D models – minimising on site variability.

Light steel frame technology can add real value to a project as demonstrated on our recently completed work on the Amenities Building at The University of Nottingham. EOS offered a dramatically improved building programme through offsite manufacturing, ensuring the building was weather-tight rapidly to allow follow on trades to begin earlier and value-engineered the building design from blockwork to steel framing systems to reduce cost. Providing a fast-track offsite manufactured approach, meant the disruption to students and university staff was minimal.

Furthermore, capital costs were reduced due to value-engineering and a shorter programme time – removing an estimated 6% from the original capital cost budget and leading to a faster return on investment for the clients. EOS Facades recently won the ‘value’ accolade at the East Midlands Celebrating Construction Awards for their work on this project.

health & SafetyTime and time again, industry surveys have proved steel frame to be the safest choice. Steelwork contractors are highly skilled individuals, holding industry recognised qualifications. The continuous use of reliable and safe techniques significantly minimises the risk of onsite issues.

Health and safety considerations are key to installation on building sites. For example; dedicated lifting points on members and lifting brackets; support frames that allow mobile elevating working platforms (MEWPs) to be used on erected steelwork; edge protection attached at ground level prior to erection; the widespread use of nets for follow-on trades and offsite cutting of composite floor decking.

Furthermore, steel components can be pre-assembled or fabricated into modules either offsite or at low level, which reduces the need for working at height. Components or frames can be delivered to site as and when it is required, reducing the need for potentially hazardous on site storage.

The steel construction sector has a number of measures in place to ensure its continued exceptional H&S track record, including The Safety in Steel Construction (SiSC) health and safety advisory service; The BCSA Safe Site Handover Certificate (SSHC) and The Steel Construction Certification Scheme (SCCS) is UKAS accredited.

Vibration and acousticsAll structures are susceptible to vibration – no matter what material they are built from. Steel framed buildings are capable of meeting and exceeding strict vibration and acoustic performance criteria for the most demanding applications – that is one of the reasons steel is popularly used in vibration sensitive buildings such as schools. Steel-framed buildings can comfortably satisfy the acoustic performance requirements for educational buildings in accordance with Building Bulletin 93 – acoustic design of schools – performance standards.

The acoustic performance requirements of Part E of the Building regulations (The Approved Document E which details new acoustic performance requirements in England and Wales for residential dwellings, schools and other construction types) are easily met by steel framed buildings. However, robust detailing is required with any framing material to ensure compliance with Part E, including floor finishes, service penetration and flanking details.

For external walls, where both acoustic and thermal insulation is needed, infill steel-framed construction provides the ultimate solution. Insulation is provided within the frame, giving excellent thermal properties. In addition, infill solutions provide a robust wall with no gaps between the wall and main structure, which can be a problem with blockwork walls.

SustainabilityOne of steel's most notable benefits is its sustainable credentials, which is a key consideration as educational facilities strive to achieve lower carbon footprints and become more environmentally friendly.

A major benefit is a minimised impact on the environment. Light steel frame permits a fabric first design approach and optimises the building envelope. Steel is a long-term solution that is widely recycled at the end of life – providing minimum onsite waste and enabling a more sustainable future for the facility. Steel can be recycled again and again without any degradation in terms of properties and performance. Reuse of steel construction products offers even greater environmental advantage than recycling.

There is a reduced heating requirement in steel buildings ensuring lower emissions to the atmosphere. Thermal mass – the ability of a material to absorb heat energy is a key energy efficiency performance indicator. Steel framing heats up quickly – an important consideration as this will reduce the facilities heating bills without compromising on the wellbeing of the students.

fire performanceSteel is non-combustible: it simply does not burn or contribute to the spread or intensity of a fire. The performance of steel in fire has been researched more extensively than any other building material. Decades of research has been invested into understanding how steel reacts to fire. By comparison, relatively little is known about the performance of concrete structures in fire.

Simple and advanced methods are available for the analysis of composite steel deck floors in fire; these can lead to the elimination of fire protection on many secondary beams. All of these positive fire characteristics further reduce the risk of fire during construction where many new education buildings are subjected to arson attack.

EconomicsIndependent studies consistently show that steel is the most cost-effective framing solution for multi-storey construction in the UK market. Cost savings are made due to the speed of construction, the frame is installed very quickly once onsite. Which not only significantly reduces the building programme, it reduces disruption – which is vital during term-time.

Resource efficiencies are also achieved due to the reduced site labour requirement and follow-on trades brought onto site sooner – delivering time savings in the build programme. Time is money! Time savings can easily shave off between 3% and 5% of the overall project value.

Furthermore, the longevity of light steel frame minimises costs in the long term. Steel is highly durable and does not decay as quickly as other materials. This minimises the need for early refurbishment resulting in dramatically reduced repair costs down the line.

Steel offers maximum whole life value, buildings can also easily adapted, avoiding costly and environmentally harmful demolition or redevelopment and what’s more can be carried out with minimal disruption and cost.

Sector supportThe UK steel sector provides an unmatched level of information, support and advice. Extensive R&D is continuous and steel has arguably had the highest level of investment in terms of technical research and development compared to other construction materials. This has led to an extensive range of supporting information being readily available.

The steel sector maintains close relationships with universities and other educational and research institutions in the UK, supplying extensive teaching resources, providing bursaries, and sponsoring university academic posts.

Technical courses and seminars are provided by Tata Steel, the British Constructional Steelwork Association and Steel Construction Institute. Caesarstone has unveiled five, stunning new colours for this autumn/winter. Three of the colours – Statuario, Symphony Grey and Urban Safari – will be exciting new additions to Caesarstone’s pioneering Supernatural series of colours, whilst Raw Concrete, a semi-matt, putty coloured quartz and Vanilla Noir, a dramatically dark colour, will join the Classico Collection.

stannah - Ace Tailor of Lifts For Tight spacesWhen it comes to tailoring passenger lifts to fit tight-squeeze spaces, Stannah Lift Services was the lift company of choice for Coastal Housing Group in their Bethesda Court social housing complex in Swansea, Wales.

The Stannah team removed the existing 4 hydraulic passenger lifts and separate motor rooms (installed in 1994 by other lift manufacturers) and replaced them with gearless-traction, motor room-less, 6-person passenger lifts.

Critically, each 450kg lift had to be tailored to fit exact shaft dimensions, maximising the space available. With a 5mm tolerance, design and manufacture had to be spot on – which it was, and all achieved within 16 weeks.

The motor room-less capability is another space-saving feature, with the controller located in the landing architraves on the top floors.

As principle contractor, the South West England & South Wales branch of Stannah Lift Services was wholly responsible for this turnkey project. Working in close partnership with lift consultants, Dunbar and Boardman, Stannah covered every aspect of the project from lift removal, Health and Safety and builders work to installation of the new lifts, cleaning, decorating and commissioning.

The new lifts were designed, procured and installed to improve access over 3 and 4 levels for tenants in 4 separate apartment blocks that comprise Bethesda Court. Operating at a speed of 1.0mps, they are finished in durable satin stainless steel throughout, with 3-panel, side-opening doors, full-length rear-view mirrors, downlighter ceilings, grey non-slip floors and grab rails. Full-collective, simplex operation helps to deliver faultless, energy saving function and reliability.

A++ for ecodan renewable Heating range

Mitsubishi Electric has announced that its entire range of Ecodan air source heat pumps has achieved A++ rating under the first Energy Related Products (ErP) Directive ruling for heating products across Europe. ErP means that all space and water heaters will need to display an energy label which will help both residential and commercial customers identify the most energy-efficient products on the market and brings heating products into line with other energy consuming goods such as fridges and washing machines. managed to stave off the opposition to score with the club: “The project entailed replacing the ancient stored hot water system serving the showers, changing rooms and toilet facilities. I originally ordered two Infinity HDC 1500 units but Rinnai’s latest low NoX HDC 1600 heater with 107% efficiencies had just become available so we put in two of them plus a 300 litre buffer vessel.”

“The system now runs on boosted pressure which is controlled by a pressure-reducing valve set at an operating pressure of 1.0 bar. The hot water is heated by the two Rinnai units with 300 litres of stored hot water by way of a direct heated buffer vessel, protected by two Scale Master units. The temperature is modulated and controlled by the internal CPUs on the Rinnai units. A separate controller to alter the temperature settings can also be used.”

Hillier-Rees adds: “The old boiler was probably about 80% efficient and the Rinnai is 107% efficient. Compared with the old gas hungry boiler system and the two wall mounted Rinnai system it’s using half the gas and taking up half the space of the old boiler. In real terms Maesteg RFC is getting twice as much in half the space. In the space saved, a stud wall has been erected and a storage facility created.” www.rinnaiuk.com

High efficiency Pumps – They’re At Home In The Home..The small circulating pump is one of those vital pieces of equipment that if it was in a stage play would sadly never get the leading role. Destined to be a bit player, the pre-ErP small circulators were often responsible for a larger use of electricity in the home than many of the larger appliances - including the washing machine, the dishwasher, the fridge and the freezer - over a twelve month period!

The advent of the ErP Directive and the requirement for the pump to meet significant new energy efficiency targets has seen it becoming an energy saver rather than an energy guzzler, offering up to £137 a year in potential electricity savings compared to the energy use of the old heating pumps – many millions of which we should remember, are still running heating systems in the UK and across Europe – waiting to be replaced by their modern, energy efficient cousins when they come to the end of their lives or get replaced by energy conscious owners and landlords.

Small circulating pumps remain a key component of all wet heating systems in the UK – whether traditional boiler driven systems or new renewable systems. They perform as standalone pumps or as integrated pumps in combi and system boilers and they keep the water circulating in underfloor heating systems too.

From January 2013, high efficiency pumps were demanded by EU Legislation – the much vaunted ErP Legislation - as 2013 unfolded and availability of anything other than high efficiency options declined, installers began to buy and install and specifiers began to specify the high efficiency options.

Now, high efficiency pumps have been accepted and are being installed in their thousands across the UK.

Despite this embracing of the new legislation and availability of the new ErP compliant circulating pumps, the fact remains that there are still many millions of old, uncontrolled small circulators operating in heating systems across the UK. So there is still huge potential to further reduce energy use and energy bills in the months and years ahead. Although the concept of lifecycle costs was not new in January 2013 when ErP came into force, it was a concept that had largely been associated with commercial projects rather than domestic ones.

But suddenly it became more important and the additional costs that inevitably follow the development of exciting new technology – in this case the vastly improved electronics and the arrival of electronically commutated motors (ECMs) for small circulating pumps - were justified by the lower life cycle costs of the new high efficiency, more expensive pumps and the huge savings possible over a ten or fifteen year operational life time. These could pay for the increased capital cost of the pump at the outset, many times over.

In general terms, the arrival of the EU ErP Directive has clearly begun to make significant inroads in the energy consumption figures, and as a result, the emissions figures. www.wilo.co.uk

The magazine you are now reading is essentially about communications. It’s a visual manifestation of good public relations, in this case marrying the products and services of one group (manufacturers) with the creative and physical skills of another (specifiers). This activity has several names – networking, marketing, selling, educating.

When I trained as an architect (at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London) IBM would let you borrow one of their new golfball-head typewriters to improve the presentation of your thesis. IBM’s clever idea assumed that when you qualified you would be grateful and buy one or, perhaps in later years, equip your architectural practice with several such typewriters.

Actually, building product manufacturers may have missed a trick here too. Perhaps a brick presented by a manufacturer to a student, maybe to serve as a door-stop, or worry-bead could equally have won goodwill and might mean he specified thousands of your bricks for his first building project! Seriously, we hardly knew what a brick was in those days. An architect’s training then was far too design based with only a cursory glance at how you would actually translate your two-dimensional concept into three-dimensional reality.

Occasionally, a curious and product starved student or two took it upon himself/herself to tick all the enquiry boxes in Architect’s Journal. Manufacturers were delighted to seduce and deluge their future specifiers until the fad was stopped

because the College front desk could no longer cope with sales literature mailed by the truckload!

PR in practiceSo today how does the architect, designer, contractor actually decide what to specify? Many designers still take the safe route by specifying the same old product for years or, wary of new stuff, will be convinced only when others have tried and tested. Conversely, they are others who only want to use new systems, new products and new innovations and will shun anything well established. Sometimes, their concept is so innovative that manufacturers have to come up with completely new product solutions –the Sydney Opera House is a famous example of this.

One of the most frustrating things for architects must be when their lovingly chosen materials, products, systems, shapes even, are changed by the contractor at a late stage in the design-and-build contract in order to save money or for some other third party reason. Clearly, the contractor is often as important a target as the architect.

Today, many product manufacturers use professional PR as the most effective way of communicating with their client specifiers. This is not about spinning bad news it’s about using the talents of people who can communicate, write and inform on your behalf and for your advantage.

Lighting is a particularly emotional influence on how a person reacts to a building; their mood can be changed in an instant. For example, this image of Roblon fibre optic lights from Lights Projects attracts attention from a boring elevator ride and creates a sense of wonderment and curiosity about what else visitors will experience at 200 Aldersgate London and its 34,000sqm designed to host a range of events and exhibitions.

The simple objective is to raise public awareness of a company and to publicise its services and products to specifiers in a highly professional way. In other words, help devise a marketing strategy capitalising on the company’s most valuable USPs (unique selling points), and creating a cost effective focus for action. One important caveat is not to be preoccupied with what you, the manufacturer, want to sell at the expense of fully understanding your customer. In other words, you must not be so blinded by your product and your sales targets that you forget to focus on what your clients want and the drive to providing solutions for their problems..

Press publicityClearly, the press is the starting-point for maximising exposure and getting your services and products better known. That means supplying editors with what they want at the time they want it and providing authoritative and reliable back-up, particularly for features and time-sensitive news. Sadly, some of the worst publications are only interested in making money from colour separations (an anachronistic word if there ever was one in this digital age) – the money charged for publishing a photo (almost regardless of what it is) with your press release. Of course, the best publications don’t think like that this which is why they are the best and their influence on the specifer is more effective. There are so many architectural, building and interior design magazines out there. That’s why a knowledgeable PR professional can advise and help.

One important tip, often overlooked, is to ensure that you are maximising help from third parties. For example, piggybacking on the publicity which others may be doing where you are relevant (eg architect, developer, contractor) costs nothing but it worth its weight in gold (or silver maybe since the price of gold has plummeted).

The internet and social media are now extremely effective mediums and a good PR will exploit all the various ways by which your organisation can capitalise. Obviously, it is vitally important that the website and other links are regularly updated with press information, news, case studies, reports etc. The idea to capture regular visitors because they know that what you have to say is always interesting, important and worth the effort of clicking.

networkingThere are of course many other avenues of good publicity which should always be examined for their potential, such as the plethora of Exhibitions. However, while the idea of being in the same Hall as thousands of visitors may sound exciting and profit-generating, the percentage of actually visitors and new customers to your stand can be very small and often not worth the great expense of buying the space, building the stand and staff time. The big stands of well-known names will do better but are largely welcoming old friends and the already converted while for the smaller participants, often around the cheaper perimeter, it can be nightmare of only netting a few casual passers-by.

Of course, there are many other ways of meeting people and generating productive networking, including Conferences and Seminars, Awards ceremonies, Lobbying and, ideally, CPD presentations in the specifiers’ actual office. All these are open for discussion with your PR professional who will know what’s best for your company.

ImagesBuilding is a unique activity where two quite different disciplines are fused together – great design and cost-effective engineering - or at least it should be which is a lesson the mass house-builders have yet to learn! Cathedrals are perhaps the finest examples of this, the famous works of Italian architect/engineer Nervi are another.

The creation of space is very much an emotional thing and the very best designers know exactly how to touch our emotions. That’s why, as we all know, the use of great images does more for a manufacturer and his products than endless technical data – at least at the first stage. For interest, the three examples shown here are actual case studies from our clients and neatly illustrate exactly why exceptional images are vital tools in this PR business.

This shot was widely used by magazines not necessarily for its obvious attraction but because it clearly shows how the Kalwall diffused daylighting system works. The insulating cladding creates a well-lit, healthy and attractive environment where concentration on an activity is enhanced (such as in sports halls and schools) while maintaining a link with the outside yet being perfectly private.

Sometimes it is unnecessary to focus on the particular building product but attract more attention from the space within which it plays an important part. This example is the so-called Iceberg, the very famous residential scheme located beside the port at Aarhus in Denmark. It was used in publicity to showcase how large bare basements and indoor car-parking areas were transformed into pleasant and quieter environments by using Troldtekt sound-absorbing ceiling panels.

Wrightstyle, Light And glass In Modern Architecture

Wrightstyle is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems, supplying fire and blast resistant systems worldwide. Jane Embury, the company’s marketing director, looks at the role of light in contemporary architecture. Most building materials have weight and mass, whether concrete, a brick or a length of structural steel. There is, however, one building material that has neither weight nor mass.

The Greeks called it Helios, the Romans Sol and, despite forming over 98% of the solar system, it is technically a Yellow G2 Dwarf, one of over 400 billion other stars in just our small corner of the universe. Every second it converts about 700 million tons of hydrogen into about 695 million tons of helium and five million tons of energy, generating 386 billion billion mega Watts.

It takes light from the Sun about eight minutes to reach Earth or 1.3 seconds for reflected light to bounce from the Moon, and without it we would be in a cold and dark place. In terms of building

design, the Sun’s generosity was recognized by the 20th century architect Louis Kahn who once remarked, “the sun never knew how great it was until it hit the side of a building.”

Another iconic designer, Le Corbusier, said that “architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.” It adds up to an architectural philosophy that’s about how we integrate the internal and the external of a building to create structures that bring the outside inside, making best use of ambient light, and creating spaces most conducive for work, rest and play. Two of the first modern buildings to embrace that philosophy were the UN Building and Lever House in New York, completed in 1952, both of which made extensive use of glass instead of the traditional steel and stone.

A third soon followed: the Seagram Building, also in New York, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Completed in 1958, with a glass façade making the building transparent and reflective, it helped to change the way that designers thought about form and function. That changed philosophy saw light become a fundamental part of the architectural process, a shift in mainstream design perspective that was earlier championed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s. Much influenced by Japanese architecture that placed buildings within their wider context, he was one of the first to propose steel and glass construction, arguing that “form and function are one.”

He wasn’t alone. German architect Arthur Korn, wrote in 1929: “Glass is an extraordinary material. It gave us the beauty of medieval stained glass windows. Tightly held between supporting piers they opened a door to allow a glimpse of paradise in luminous colours from the shadow of the grave. “Nothing has been lost from the richness of those earlier creations, but glass has now been associated with other materials to meet new functions. A new glass age has begun, which is equal in beauty to the old one of Gothic windows.”

Arguably, that new glass age was heralded by the Great Exhibition of 1851 and Sir Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace, essentially a giant greenhouse with some one million square feet of glass. What made it possible was the recent invention of cast

plate glass, a cheap but strong glass type. For the first time, a commercial building of considerable size – over 550 metres long and nearly 40 metres high – had been constructed almost entirely from glass.

Only thirteen years later, Oriel Chambers in Liverpool was completed, recognized by many as the first example of metal-framed curtain walling in the UK. Now Grade 1 Listed, an 1866 article in The Builder was less than complimentary: “The plainest brick warehouse in town is infinitely superior as a building to that large agglomeration of protruding plate-glass bubbles termed Oriel Chambers.” So, it didn’t please everyone.

But Arthur Korn’s new glass age is still with us, as glass and framing systems have continued to evolve, driven by changing perspectives of urbanism and new architectural thinking. Not least, glass has evolved to deal with both

threat and opportunity – from the need to make buildings safe from terrorist attack to providing, for example, thermal comfort and improved air quality.

Modern glass composites have near-perfect optical quality and can stop a fire for two hours or more, prevent bullets from passing through – and withstand the detonation of a high explosive charge. Glass is, however, merely a go-between – a translucent membrane between an interior space and the world beyond.

Crittall solution For Listed Lidl Development Successful supermarket chain, Lidl, faced an unusual challenge with its plans to develop a store on the Lower Bristol Road in Bath. Occupying the chosen site was an empty and vandalised single storey industrial building circa 1966. Lidl invariably plumps for new-build stores but, having split the acquisition of the site with a property developer, the new owners’ demolition plans were thwarted by an unexpected Grade II listing.

The reason for English Heritage’s attention was the mode of construction of the otherwise unremarkable structure. The 57,000

sq ft. building was the first example in the UK of the use of the Mero Space Frame. Birmingham-based Lapworth Partnership worked with Bath and North East Somerset Council’s conservation officer and English Heritage in the South West region to arrive at an acceptable refurbishment and upgrade of the building.

In order to replicate the slenderness of the original aluminium fenestration a steel window system was selected for all the continuous high-level glazing. The company supplied banks of coupled W20 and MW40 section fixed frames, double glazed in long runs. These were interspersed with bespoke insulated pressings both internally and externally to allow a link between upper and lower level windows, roof and internal services. Another element was a narrow metal fascia running at roof level around the building. This was recreated in steel together with its specially designed fixing system to replace the original aluminium and asbestos sill. A further aspect of the original design is a series of large louvred panels, an important visual element of the external elevation. Impressive new glassolutions Look For rochdale InterchangeA recently opened landmark transport interchange in Rochdale which features extensive structural glazing by GLASSOLUTIONS has caught the attention of the industry’s leaders by picking up a string of awards in recognition for its architectural and engineering excellence. Glazing for the internal and external façades and shop frontages for the Rochdale Transport Interchange was designed by GLASSOLUTIONS to create a frameless, glass-to-glass appearance and achieve visual consistency across the project.

The outer glass was 6mm SGG PARSOL® grey body tinted toughened safety glass, which provides essential solar control to help deliver a comfortable internal environment. The cavity is 20mm air filled with Wicona SG toggle insert. Inner glass was 9.5mm SGG STADIP PROTECT® clear laminated safety glass.

The project was funded jointly by the Department for Transport, Transport for Greater Manchester and Rochdale Borough Council. The building was designed to be highly transparent, with an enclosed single concourse creating a dramatic cornerstone feature to the town for visitors and daily users. The project has successfully delivered an enhanced experience for users, with exceptional passenger facilities, and is one of Europe’s first hydroelectric powered transport interchanges.

It has since been recognised with the award for Lancashire Regional Project of the Year at the North West Regional Construction Awards, and the award for Best Medium Project at the North West Structural Awards, organised by the Institution of Structural Engineers. The new campus for Leeds College of Building was designed by architects Fuse Studios. Using its skills to seamlessly integrate architecture and interiors, Fuse has fulfilled the College’s brief to promote the use of modern materials and construction methods, so the new project becomes an educational demonstration in its own right, as well as supporting BREEAM excellence.Materials specified included the diffused daylighting Kalwall cladding and roofing system. CMs Window systems Delivers Healthy outlook For Hospital Teaching & Learning FacilityCMS Window Systems has completed the design and installation of energy efficient curtain walling, doors and windows for a new £27 million state of the art Teaching & Learning Facility at Glasgow’s new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The striking building, which has been designed by leading architects BMJ, features almost 400m2 of Metal Technology curtain walling incorporating System 5-200 doors, and 68 tilt and turn windows, as well as splayed feature pod round windows designed and fabricated by CMS as part of the £350,000 door and window contract.

CMS used energy efficient SGG COOL-LITE SKN 154 glass from GLASSOLUTIONS to offer optimum solar and thermal performance. The glass reduces

the risk of overheating and therefore the need for costly air conditioning during warmer periods.

–Located on the site of Scotland’s biggest hospital development, the new teaching facility has been developed jointly by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and The University of Glasgow. It will provide a training facility for undergraduate doctors and postgraduate medical staff.

The centre will also house a stratified medicine facility capable of undertaking whole genome DNA sequencing to identify optimal treatments for patients with chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions.

The new centre will replace facilities at the Western Infirmary, Victoria Infirmary, Southern

General and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children which will all close following the transfer of clinical services to the new site.

Faithful replication of Historic Wall Tiles ensures seamless restoration of grade 2 College BuildingCraven Dunnill Jackfield has successfully completed the replacement and restoration of hand glazed, historic wall tiles for the Grade 2, former East Ham College. The project involved the origination of accurate models for 39 unique designs and the formulation of several metal oxide glazes, which were fired and applied seamlessly to match the original tiles of the 1903 building.

Rick Mather Architects lead the refurbishment project, in consultation with English Heritage. Jackfield manufactured the tiles and worked in close collaboration with specialist tiling and terrazzo contractor WB Simpson & Son. The newly manufactured wall tiles are such an exact match to the originals and so expertly installed that the difference in age of around 110 years is indiscernible to the untrained eye. The Edwardian Grade 2 listed building was home to the Old Technical College and forms part of the larger East Ham Civic Campus. It is now the new Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre.

The official foundation stone of the original building was laid in 1903 and is located in the entrance porch, surrounded by a decorative backdrop of brown glazed ceramic tiles. Many of the tiles in the outer porch, the main vestibule, stairs and ground floor corridors had been extensively damaged over the life of the building. Whilst it was possible to salvage some of the original tiles by cleaning, many others were missing or so badly damaged that they needed to be replaced.

The level of manufacturing complexity on the project was significant. Approaching 1400 tiles were required across 39 unique designs, of which 813 had to be manufactured from scratch, without any existing moulds. These included decorative, embossed border tiles, two sizes of panel frame profiles, skirting borders, 6 x 4 inch and 6 x 3 inch tiles in plain and round edge, and external curved skirting profiles. Fitting new tiles within existing ornately decorated tiles was an intricate job and required the reproduction tiles to be accurate in both size and thickness.

Unable to take moulds from the original tiles, the team at Craven Dunnill Jackfield expertly re-modelled all the tile profiles, faithfully copying the remaining originals. The replacement tiles were then manufactured in biscuit before being hand-dipped in specially formulated, metal oxide glazes: green and brown. The glaze recipe used was similar to that of the original tiles.

Adrian Blundell, Production Director at Craven Dunnill Jackfield led the project, working closely with the tile contractor to ensure the project was successfully completed. Blundell attended the East Ham College of Technology back in 1984, taking a foundation art course in art and design, and clearly remembers the ornately decorated, ceramic tiled pillars which take centre stage in the main vestibule.

He comments: “When you are dealing with a historic site, you never know what issues are going to arise. Pendock Facilitates Fast-Track Toilet refurbishment For Virgin Trains At Wolverhampton station

The UK’s rail franchise companies always strive to ensure the travelling public do not suffer undue delays as a result of any work on the network - an ethos reflected during a demanding refurbishment project carried out within one of the Midland’s busiest stations where Pendock, the specialist encasement manufacturer, was the chosen supplier for high quality panels and partitions. Extending to around 15,000 sq ft of accommodation, this stunning home features 7 bedroom suites, 6 reception rooms, staff accommodation, underground car park, a choice of both indoor and outdoor pools and an all-weather tennis court.Wetrooms UK were approached by Octagon Developments to supply and install wetroom systems and waterproofing solutions into the Master Bathroom, Gym and three further En-Suites at the luxury house in Virginia Water. All wetrooms were to be installed onto solid floors.Wetrooms UK recommended the installation of Linear Screed Drains into each of the wet areas of the development, capable of coping with flow rates of up to 29 L/min. Falls were created within the screed before the Linear Screed Drains and solid linear grills, manufactured by Wetrooms UK, were installed into the required floor or wall position within each bathroom. RIW Tilesafe waterproof membrane was applied to the floor and wall junctions within each of the shower areas and across the floor area, finishing 1 metre outside the shower area. Marmox Multiboards Feature In goodenough Bathroom ContractThe total refurbishment of 64 guest bathrooms within a club, located on one of London’s most fashionable garden squares, has featured the use of Multiboards, manufactured by Marmox Limited to offer an ideal backing board for wetroom environments.

In total Marmox supplied some 1000 square metres of Multiboard in the 2500 x 600 (Longboard) and 1250 x 600 (Standard board) options; at 12.5 and 6mm thickness respectively. The upgrade of the en-suite bathrooms within the Goodenough Club was completed over a 19 week period earlier this year.

The joints between the boards were covered using Marmox self-adhesive waterproof tape which enables contractors to tile directly over the top; though in this instance the tilers opted to apply a thin skim of the adhesive across the entire surface.

Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof.

Marmox soundboard Brings Harmony To new neighbours In Kensington Apartment Building

The excellent acoustic insulation properties of SoundBoard, manufactured by Marmox, has restored peace and quiet in an exclusive West London apartment building, where two flats were being knocked into one. The refurbishment and integration of the adjoining dwellings has been carried out by main contractor, LDB Construction. LDB identified the Marmox SoundBoard as an ideal panel to use in overlaying the concrete subfloor, prior to installing electric underfloor heating coils. SoundBoard offers both acoustic and thermal insulation properties and helps prevent damage to cabling. This build up was then covered with high quality timber flooring in some rooms while marble tiles featured in the rest. All of the SoundBoard panels measure 600 x 1250 mm, while the two different board thicknesses were used to address a step in the floor height between the adjacent apartments, which had to be brought level when the spaces were linked. The 8.0 and 12.0 mm thick versions of the boards weigh 1.8 and 1.95 kg respectively while they offer a minimum 17 dB sound reduction and can be specified as part of the Robust Detail, Appendix D solution to impact sound transmission. They are readily cut or shaped with a knife to fit any room layout and in addition to their acoustic performance, SoundBoards provide thermal transmittance figures of 0.35 or 0.39 W/mK for the two different thicknesses. www.marmox.co.uk

Hauraton Channels Used As Perimeter Drainage At Brooke Church of england school

Located in Brooke village about six miles South of Norwich, The Brooke Church of England Primary School is a brick building surrounded by an asphalted playground which tended to flood when there was heavy rain. As part of a number of measures designed to reduce future flood risk it was decided that the existing drainage needed to be upgraded.The Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings was specified by NPS Group of Norwich, and used to provide perimeter drainage right around the school building.This continues 104 metre channel run not only drained the asphalt playground it prevented standing water reaching the walls and acted as a drain for roof downpipes. Walltite Helps To Insulate restored Chapel

Converting a solid stone disused chapel into a warm and comfortable family home needed some heavy duty insulation – fortunately WALLTITE® was able to cope with all the idiosyncrasies of the project. WALLTITE® is applied as a liquid that expands on contact to form a highly insulating rigid foam. This method of application means that it can cope with any substrate and can easily be applied in restricted and difficult spaces. WALLTITE® was applied to the interior of the solid brick walls, to the underside of the floorboards and to the ceilings of each room in order to create cosy draught-free living spaces.The external walls posed a particular challenge. A Yorkshire stone façade is lined with brick and lime mortar – an inherently porous structure. WALLTITE® is resistant to moisture but the project architect, wanting assurance of water resistance, asked for a drainage mat to be fixed to the wall prior to the application of the WALLTITE®. Drawing on a materials palette of the surrounding University buildings, Manchester-based architects Lewis and Hickey opted for Meteon® cladding panels from Trespa UK for the inner elevations of the blocks which face onto two central plazas that act as communal areas from which the buildings are accessed.

“The façades of the three blocks facing outward onto the street were to be in a GRC, reflecting the stonework of the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral and the Reilly Building. The courtyard facades were also to be of the same tone, maximising the light reflectance to illuminate the courtyard bedrooms”, says architect Philip Daniels. “Trespa® panels were the logical choice for the internal courtyard facades, offering a cost-effective option that maintained dimensional and aesthetic stability over time, and would weather well.”

The design of the Trespa® facades, using approximately 2000 panels, was to use irregular panel sizes with staggered joints providing a softer, more

organic effect, again referencing the stonework of the university buildings. A graduation of tones, using four colours, was also selected, starting with darker panels in Mid Grey at the base of the building, and becoming progressively lighter with Silver Grey and Winter Grey and eventually White towards the roofline.

Daniels explains: “This plays on the natural distribution of light, and gives the perception of the courtyard becoming wider at the top, avoiding a ‘canyon’ effect. The panels were riveted to vertical aluminium rails and rivets were capped with colour-coordinated caps which were imperceptible from ground level once the building was complete.”

Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative, high-pressure compact laminate with an integral surface manufactured using Trespa’s unique in-house technologies that utilise dry-forming and electron beam curing. It is the company’s leading family of architectural panels for façades and exterior applications, created – as with all Trespa products - in close collaboration with architects, designers, installers, distributors and end-users.

Coxdome Trade range sheds new Light on Technology At essex schoolA six week contract at the All Saints Catholic School in Dagenham carried out by a building company experienced in roofing work, comprised of a series of rooflights upgraded to insulated, twin-skin units from the Jet Cox Coxdome Trade Range: offering improved natural daylighting as well as enhancing the all-round energy and weather performance. Although the flat and barrel vaulted roof areas were in a generally good state of repair, the estates’ department responsible for the

buildings’ upkeep took the decision to replace the existing rooflights over the computer suite and design & technology teaching space. This was due to the fact the existing units offered little insulation value and were coming to the end of their working life. A total of 38 of the 600mm x 600mm Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights, along with 300 mm high insulated upstands. The double-skin domes feature tough polycarbonate glazing which will resist physical damage as well as extremes of weather. The rooflights feature trickle ventilation on two sides to help maintain a healthy indoor atmosphere; though they are hinged for manual operation if increased airflow is required during spells of unusually hot weather. www.jet-cox.co.uk

Kemper system Provides odourless roofing solution For Kent schools

Two schools in Kent made a more watertight start to the new academic year thanks to roof refurbishment projects using Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing system. St Columba’s Catholic Boys’ School in Bexleyheath and Ashford Oaks Primary School in Ashford have both invested in upgrades to their roofs, installed by specialist roofing contractor, Capital Roofing.

A 14-week programme at St Columba’s has involved overlaying the entire existing roof surface with a warm roof build up from Kemper System

to improve the building’s thermal performance and provide effective waterproofing. Capital Roofing used the existing mineral as a vapour control layer, before installing Kemper System’s PIR insulation board. Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR odourless, solvent free waterproofing system completed the roof overlay scheme. Capital Roofing applied Kemper System’s D primer before applying the cold-applied liquid resin.

At Ashford Oaks Primary School, the recently completed scheme involved the roofs to the school’s main hall and adjoining classrooms. The project was carried out while the school was fully operational and Kemper System’s solvent free Kemperol 2K-PUR provided significant advantages because it is both odourless and suitable for overlay directly onto the existing single ply surface. The recent roof refurbishment works at Eden Park Primary School Academy in Devon are yet another example of Sika Liquid Plastics’ dedication to delivering roofing systems that suit the sensitive education environment. The Bristol-based chartered building surveyors, Kenneth & Edwards, worked with the team at Sika Liquid Plastics, who compiled a detailed report on the original felt roof, which had reached the end of its life.

Paddy O’Conner from Kenneth & Edwards said: “ I was looking for a system that could cope with complicated detailing, as there was extensive work needed to make good around the roof lights. However, I was also conscious that if we used a traditional system with hot works, and the project overran the summer holiday period, there would be considerable disruption and risk.”

Sika Liquid Plastics’ liquid waterproofing membrane, Decothane, fitted the bill. The liquid solution allows for ease of application around detailing and as the product is cold applied, installation could be undertaken during term time, if need be, without interrupting the education environment. Stormforce Roofing and Maintenance, a Sika Liquid Plastics Quality Assured Contractor, completed the work in a matter of weeks, flawlessly overlaying the 1,500sq m roof with the new Decothane system, as well was installing new insulation and Decalite roof lights. The devastating storm surge that hit the east coast two years ago damaged many properties up and down the country. Dunes Amusements in Cromer, Norfolk, was one of the businesses destroyed by the surge and worked with Norfolk Pro Build, Gray and Jarrett and Sika Sarnafil to repair the damage in order to open to the public once again.

Completed in summer 2014, the project was one of the first in the country to use Sika Sarnafil’s new Self Adhered roofing membrane. Chosen because of its ability to withstand tough weather conditions, an important consideration when specifying products for buildings by the sea, the membrane also offered the added advantage of speedy installation time.

Gray and Jarrett undertook the roofing portion of the project, first removing the existing strawboard decking down to the steel frame and replacing with a steel corrugated deck. Low roofline Installation From FAKro Proves The Perfect Window option Dualchas Architects’ bespoke design of Taigh Learaige in Stanley, Perthshire shows the benefit of being able to install FAKRO roof windows at a choice of depths.

In this case, the visual aesthetic is greatly enhanced by their low profile in a larch roof which extends into the walls, with no visible rainwater goods. Eight non-vented, triple-glazed FTV U5 centre pivot windows were used with thermal combination flashings and XDP fitted underfelt collars. A clever split level allows higher ceiling spaces in the open rooms with the roof windows being used to convey natural light to the lower floor.

Architect Alasdair Stephen commented, “Fakro windows were used because of the wide range of sizes available and the scope the company offers for project-specific customisation. They are also great value compared to other glazing systems”.

The pine FTP-V U5 is vacuum-impregnated and finished with two layers of non-hazardous acrylic lacquer. The combination of a triple sealing system and energy-efficient glazing gives it an

Aluprof Clothes new Matalan HQBuilt on the former Petrolite site at Knowsley Industrial Park, Matalans’ new headquarters makes extensive use of Aluprofs’ range of aluminium framed glazing systems. Design by Manchester based Fletcher-Rae Architects, Aluprofs' Humberside fabricator, CSI, won the contract to fabricate and install the external facade. The resulting three-storey, 132,000 sq ft office block, looks imposing on its new fifteen acre site and uses colour effectively to increase its presence.

The main facades of the offices consist of Aluprof’s 50mm ‘MBSR50N’ curtain walling with the reception atrium completed in the capless version of the same system the ‘MBSR50N-Efekt capless’. This system includes new high performance seals complete with further insulation within the system provided by HPVC strips. The glazing shade variations to main curtain walling areas are achieved by a mixture of Coolite ST150, Grey tinted and Mid Grey ceramic spandrels.

Generally the doors are constructed from Aluprofs' ‘MB70’ system, with the entrance side pass doors fabricated using ‘MB86’. This system enables glass to be bonded to the actual face of the door leaf to give a flush glazed effect.

The new offices are situated over three floors and achieve a BREEAM rating of 'very good’ as the project incorporates sustainable technologies for power, heating, and cooling. There is a future opportunity to link into a proposed on-site energy generation facility, located in a separate building, which forms part of a second phase development.

A £4 million project to refurbish and extend Winchester College’s New Hall building is using bespoke aluminium ‘Forma’ column casings, which were supplied and installed by Encasement to conceal structural columns while helping create a dramatic new entrance and foyer. New Hall was originally constructed in 1961 as a venue for concerts, lectures and examinations for the school, which was founded in 1382 by the Bishop of Winchester, William of Wykeham, who was also the founder of New College Oxford.

The latest modifications to New Hall, which were designed by architects Barnsley, Hewitt & Mallinson (BH&M), not only incorporate a new feature entrance and foyer, but also substantial improvements to the main performance space with the inclusion of operable bleacher seats, new mechanical ventilation and changes in room geometry to enhance the buildings’ acoustics.

Four of Encasement’s 450mm diameter column casings are used as a main feature within the new entrance design and stand up to 5800mm high to conceal the structural steelwork that supports the front edge of the pitched canopy.

A further 16 casings were also supplied and installed by Encasement within other parts of the project, including the new glazed foyer area, with all 20 casings coated in a RAL 7015 grey PPC finish to integrate with New Hall’s interior design scheme. Every Forma aluminium column casing was manufactured to the architect’s precise specifications by Encasement, which included header and skirting collars on all columns as well as special asymmetric header collars on the external casings, which were cut on site by Encasement to ensure they fitted perfectly with the sloping canopy.

Levolux grid Covers Cars In LeedsFollowing a £9 million refurbishment project, the 50 year old Merrion Centre multi-storey car park in the centre of Leeds, has been dramatically revamped, including a custom Screening Solution from Levolux. Following the completion of the refurbishment in January 2015, the Merrion Centre car park features the latest industry technology. The external façade has also been transformed, and the 6-storey structure is unrecognisable to its previous form.

Levolux was invited to develop a custom Screening Solution for the multi-storey car park. The solution incorporates rectangular-section Fins, arranged in a ‘diagrid’ pattern and horizontal aerofoil-shaped Fins. The unusual ‘diagrid’ arrangement of rectangular-shaped aluminium Fins, each measuring 200mm wide by 100mm deep, extends to screen an area with a combined length of almost 160 metres and a height of up to 11.5 metres.

The latticework assembly of Fins is fixed between vertical steel supports at 5 metre centres, creating a series of bays that continue along north, east and south elevations. The Fins are illuminated at night, thanks to the incorporation of colourful LED lights that are fixed where the Fins interconnect.While the ‘diagrid’ screen is relatively open to maximise daylight levels on each floor and allow good outward visibility for occupants, an alternative screening arrangement was required to obscure unsightly entrance and exit rampways and service areas. In these areas, Levolux utilised its innovative Infiniti Fin system to incorporate 200mm wide aerofoil-shaped Fins, arranged horizontally to form a series of vertical stacks. The Fins, which are angled at 60 degrees and fixed at a vertical pitch of 350mm, combine to screen an area measuring 32 metres in length, with a height of up to 11.6 metres. www.levolux.com

Regent Street is having a makeover. Many of its properties are being rejuvenated to keep this popular area at its finest, a recent example is the renovation of two disused office buildings one, Albany House on the corner of Regent St and Mortimer St and another in Mortimer St. These have been redeveloped to create twenty four high-spec luxury apartments, a stone’s throw away from some of London’s most desirable retail and night life.This presented a challenge of creating a comfortable and peaceful living environment in a lively area. Being Grade II Listed, the original windows could not be altered; so careful thought had to be given to dealing with traffic noise and heat loss associated with older windows. MSMR architects approached Selectaglaze to assist in developing a solution. Secondary windows fitted with a gap of 100-200mm will achieve noise reductions of around 45dB. The frames are bespoke and tightly sealed which almost eliminates drafts and

the use of thermally efficient low emissivity glass reduces heat loss by more than half to give a U-value of about 1.9. Aperam stainless steel shingles For glasgow M&s DevelopmentCooper Cromar has specified Aperam UGINOX® 2K stainless steel shingles for the 80,000 sq. ft. façade of Marks and Spencer’s new £45m store on Glasgow Fort retail park.

Described by the architects as ‘an elegantly sculpted stainless steel-clad box’, the store is located to the south of the existing development, the frontage forming a distinctive new feature, visible from all sides,

when approached from the motorway. The adjacent Wagamama restaurant adds to the imposing feature by having the same façade. Aperam spokesman Kevin Jones explained, “As the project brief was to match existing stainless

steel dating from 2006 we met the architect on site to review samples. We considered this essential to establish a benchmark for the surface. The finish 2K is the smoothest of the non-reflective polished finishes and prevents accumulation of fine contaminants. It also provides a standard of corrosion resistance which is ideal for external applications and marine environments.”

The stainless steel, manufactured in 0.6mm thickness is estimated to have saved around 18 tonnes in façade weight over an equivalent area clad in either zinc or copper.

The thinner gauge comes without compromise in terms of strength or durability and therefore makes stainless steel highly competitive against other hard metals. Trend Clears The Air At Pennine Acute Hospitals nHs TrustReducing hazards to patients and staff from airborne contaminants, dust and harmful microorganisms is a fundamental requirement within hospital operating theatres. So when Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust wanted to make its ventilation systems more efficient and effective it asked Trend Control Systems to configure its Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to maintain air quality and save money.

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s operating theatres were being ventilated even during long periods when they were empty. ‘Setting back’ is traditionally considered the best way to maintain high levels of air quality and reduce the potential for airborne contaminants, dust and harmful microorganisms to proliferate. It involves lowering the temperature and reducing the supply and extract air volumes by a small amount when the theatre is not required. This ‘standby mode’ also allows the theatre to be brought up to full operating conditions in a relatively short period of time.

However, Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 (HTM 03-01): Specialist Ventilation for Healthcare Premises Part A, Design and Validation, section 6.23, states, ‘Many ventilation systems may be completely shut down when the area served is not in active use. Alternatively, where there is a need to maintain a background condition, the ventilation output can be reduced by setting back the system.’

With this in mind, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust contacted Trend to discuss how its existing BEMS could help transition from setting back to a full shut down position when the operating theatres at Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield General Hospital Bury were not in active use.

Of most concern was the fact that once the ventilation system was switched off the theatre would have no way of removing any environmental contaminates caused by people entering and leaving the rooms. Similarly, under certain environmental conditions, any warm moist air trapped inside the ductwork after the system is turned off could become a source of contamination.

The team and Trend proposed a plan that would address the Trust’s health and safety concerns, while initiating significant energy savings and operational efficiencies. As contaminates usually come from people entering and leaving the operating theatres, it was important to make sure that the system is activated whenever traffic exceeds certain defined parameters. Peter Moore,

Key Account Manager at Trend, states, ‘We decided to install passive infrared (PIR) movement detectors that could be fully integrated with the BEMS. To address the cleaning issue, we suggested that the ventilation system should run at no less than half speed prior to undertaking any tasks and remain active for a period after completion.’

The BEMS has been configured to fully control how the air handling units (AHUs) operate. The AHUs have an occupancy time profile in conjunction with the PIR technology in some instances, but purely PIR control in others – the latter scenario is gradually being introduced across all the operating theatres, as it has been found to be more effective.

Where the AHU has a time profile in place, it maintains the operating theatres as occupied for that set period – outside of this period the PIRs maintain the space as occupied when movement is detected. After a period of 30 minutes where no movement has been detected outside of the occupied time period, the AHU then shuts down. However, any subsequent movement detected by the PIR reactivates the AHU for a minimum period of 30 minutes. In locations that only have PIR technology, the AHU is activated for a minimum of 30 minutes from the start of each detected movement.

It was also felt that operating the system in conventional set back mode in the winter months would be useful in preventing water systems within the plant freezing and stopping ice forming on filters. Meanwhile, limiting the minimum temperature inside the theatre to 15°C minimises the risk of condensation forming and allows the room to be restored to full operating conditions within a reasonable time.

The listed 19th Century former Schoolhouse overlooking the Dublin mountains was renovated and extended to create a new energy efficient residential family home. So that the exterior facade of the existing property was not altered in any way, internal insulation was installed to the interior of the stone walls of the original house.

Due to the build up of condensation behind conventional insulation when applied to single leaf construction, it became apparent that a “breathable insulation system” would be required. Remmers IQ Therm was chosen as it has the highest level of insulation for given thickness of breathable systems. The original U-value of the wall was approx 3.3W/m2K and was improved to 0.33W/m2K. Remmers IQ Therm is a complete system of fixing/insulation and finishing available in 3 board thicknesses. Working with quantity surveyors Michael Bowker & Associates, M&E consultants Cundall and Nationwide Building Contractors, Ormerod played a leading role in the transformation with a generous splash of high-end style featuring a striking open staircase as the central hub and a custom-designed, state-of-the-art wine storage and tasting counter.

Other elements include a new reception, meeting and board rooms, light training facilities, communal break-out areas, LED lighting throughout for reduced energy usage, charger points for electric cars and shower rooms to promote the company’s ‘cycle to work’ initiative.

Mapei Uses superior silicone Coating system To Help restore 13th Century CastleMapei’s Silancolor Paint system has been used to restore Benton’s 13th Century castle, in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. The system was installed as part of a refurbishment to help protect the external stone-built surface.

Prior to installation of the system, the weathered external masonry walls were cleaned and a silicone primer was applied to the original substrate. The Mapei system offers a one-stop shop system approach to façade repair with all materials being available from a single source.

Approximately 800m2 of Silancolor Cleaner Plus, a protective, water-based cleaning product was used to clean the surface, as the previous coating and mortar were damaged due to coastal weather from the estuary below, moss in the mortar and an algae infestation on the North face from adjacent trees. Mapei’s Silancolor Plus Primer, a silicone resin based primer in water dispersion was then applied to the outer walls of the building to help regulate the absorption of the substrate and protect the wall surface

from further chemical aggression. To finish, a coat of Silancolor Pittura Plus, a water-repellent and breathable, protective decorative coating, was applied to provide a long-lasting protective coating to help prevent micro-organisms (such as mildew, mould and fungi) reforming on the external façade.

In addition, Mapei’s Mapesil AC a solvent-free, acetic cross-linking, mould resistant silicone sealant, was used for the restoration of the cracks in the external façade. The project is now fully restored.

Canaletto Tower Balconies Incorporate schöck Isokorb The Canaletto residential tower at 257 City Road in London is 31-storeys with 190 luxury one, two and three bedroom apartments built to the standards of Code 4 Sustainable Homes Level 4. The tower is concrete frame and has a curving facade of metal and glass that breaks the volume into a series of three-to-four storey clusters, each containing grouped balcony terraces. The balconies are steel construction connected to the concrete frame and one of the early design considerations was the prevention of thermal bridging.

Thermal bridge heat losses are responsible for an increasing percentage of overall building heat loss, due to airtightness and fabric U-values being improved in UK Building Regulations. Thermal modelling calculations show that for multi-residential

projects such as large apartment blocks, thermal bridges could account for 20%-30% of thermal losses, with balcony connections being a major contributor if effective thermal isolation is not incorporated.

The Isokorb range of thermal break elements from Schöck is designed to combat thermal bridging and for the high specification Canaletto project the Isokorb type KS20 offers the ideal solution. This concrete-to-steel connectivity module sits between the outer and inner structural connection points and blocks the outflow of heat through the use of high quality polystyrene insulation foam. Ingenious new emergency shelter system For Humanitarian CrisesA quick and efficient response with regards to humanitarian aid is vital when facing disaster situations. While emergency accommodation solutions in crisis conditions aim for rapid response times in all kinds of terrain, they do not always meet basic living standards and it can be very challenging to achieve optimal interior comfort or adequate temperature control. As an answer to these specific needs Suricatta Systems has developed SURI, a system of transition shelters for emergency accommodation which is both easy to transport and assemble, while providing safety and maintaining acceptable ‘quality of life’ levels from the outset.

The system maximises the multiple benefits of using DuPont™ Tyvek® and DuPont™ Plantex® technology. SURI is the result of a project undertaken by the department of Innovation within the Spanish company Urbana de Exteriores, with the participation of the University of Alicante. The company specialises in building refurbishment and has developed this project in line with the Suitable Housing criteria as recognised by the UN as part of Fundamental Human Rights, and complies within the European Union framework.

A key component of SURI is DuPont™ Tyvek®. Marco Ferrari, Business Development Manager for Southern Europe of DuPont Building Innovations, says that “DuPont™ Tyvek® has been selected because it is an advanced breathable and waterproof material with a long and pioneering tradition of leading the field in building membranes, which answers a wide range of modern architectural and environmental challenges. As well as protecting structures from weather, air-leakage and condensation, DuPont™ Tyvek® is also recognised for its contribution to enhancing interior climate conditions and occupier comfort.”

DuPont™ Tyvek®, together with the geotextile DuPont™ Plantex®, have been chosen for the manufacture of the building envelope of the modular shelters both for their renowned reliability in performance and for their versatility and suitability for multiple environment and climate types.

The system consists of a series of façades with voids that are fillable using local materials such as earth, debris, sand or snow, and these can be re-filled throughout its 10 year life span. This in-situ refill capability provides a combination of stability, rigidity, insulation and protection to the ensemble, thus dramatically reducing the cost and weight of transport.

For further environmental and resource efficiency, the structure incorporates a water collection system, designed to carry rain water to a deposit from which it is rendered potable via filtration. The design is optimally sustainable: all materials can be recycled or re-used. SURI also considers natural light regulation and features adjustable apertures to maximise interior light during daylight hours, and it is equipped with solar panels that should provide sufficient energy for domestic use. Furthermore, the insulation that this system offers manages interior conditions and temperatures far more favourably when compared with other temporary shelter systems.

After participating in the reconstruction of buildings affected by the Lorca earthquake, in the South of Spain, in 2011, and in the construction of dwellings in Haiti that same year, the Suricatta Systems team had first-hand experience of the very difficult conditions in which victims and aid teams find themselves during such crises. This was the spur to begin work on the design of a new product that could significantly improve the situation ‘on the ground.’ SURI benefits not only from that experience but also from the support and collaboration of advanced solutions such DuPont™ Tyvek® and DuPont™ Plantex, ultimately providing ingenious, practical and cost-effective solutions to help alleviate suffering and assist disaster relief efforts.

Duquesa slates give Historic Cottage A Brand new Look

The installation of Cembrit’s Duquesa slates on a cottage in Devon has proved that natural slates not only provide an attractive finish to a building, but can overcome a difficult re-roofing project. Bridge Cottage is a listed building in Axminster which dates back to the 17th century. Approximately 4,500 Cembrit Duquesa natural slates were installed over an existing corrugated steel roof that had been in place for between 60 – 70 years. The property owner was impressed with the flexibility and durability of the Cembrit slates. With the roof not being at a consistent level, the slates had to be flexible enough to deal with a change in pitch – from 45 degrees at one end, to 60 degrees at the other end. The dark grey Duquesa slates lie neatly across the whole building to maintain a uniform appearance, and complement the lighter grey slate on the extension. www.cembrit.co.uk

Portakabin group Provides emergency response For Tesco express And store opens Just 4 Weeks After Its Arrival on siteJust weeks after a severe fire destroyed the Tesco Express store in Heywood, Greater Manchester, the Portakabin Group had constructed a new store in its place which is now open and serving customers.

The emergency response project involved the use of a Yorkon off-site solution which allowed the rapid construction of a new Tesco Express store. The building was installed on site in just one day and opened less

than four weeks later, despite challenging ground conditions on the petrol filling station site.

Yorkon off-site solutions from the Portakabin Group have now been used

to construct 242 projects for Tesco in the last 15 years. The Group has delivered a wide range of buildings for the food retailer – from convenience and petrol filling station stores to award-winning 10,000sqft interim supermarkets and a 28,000sqft eco-store.

Commenting on the Heywood project, Daniel Frith, Tesco Development Manager for Convenience Stores, said, “Modular construction is an ideal solution for disaster recovery because of the rapid speed and value for money it can offer.
