STANNAH LIFT PRODUCTS STAR in SPECTACULAR NEW ENTRANCE to LEEDS STATION

Page 5: Building Innovations July 2016 Issue 3

Opened on 3rd January 2016, the new southern entrance to Leeds Station features four Stannah escalators and two lifts.

Working with main contractor Carillion to fulfil the brief, the work was completed by the Stannah Escalator & Moving Walkway Department and Stannah Major Projects team in just twelve weeks.

Funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds Council, the Department for Transport and Network Rail, the new extension provides an attractive new accessible entrance and additional concourse built in the River Aire. The building was created to diminish congestion at this busy commuter station into and out of West Yorkshire and the North of England, making it an attractive route for tourists again.

Up to 20,000 passengers (or 20% of current footfall) are estimated to benefit from using the new entrance, shortening commute times and providing easy access from the south of Leeds.>>>>

>>> stannah lift products star in spectacular new entrance to leeds station

The four escalators provide continuous vertical transportation for ambulant people. Those travellers with heavy luggage, child buggies or wheelchair-users are well provided for with two bespoke 13-person traction passenger lifts located just inside the entrance.

The tight restraints on the site meant some of the features of the lift equipment had to be modified to achieve the design and vision without compromising safety.

The escalators are to NR specification with some additional features bespoke to the Leeds station project. These features were based on the tight restraints of the site and the designers risk assessment required to mitigate those risks.

This included special software so that all the machines operate to a special design philosophy when stopped in an emergency situation, including installing an additional stop button on each machine during mid travel. Bespoke manufacture of the machines at 35 degrees instead of the standard NR specification of 30 degrees, and the reduction of the speed of the machines from the standard NR .65m/s to .05m/s all result in safe, efficient travel within the constraints of an unusual and stunning building design. With no room for housing external controllers these became an integral part of the escalators.

The lifts had restricted space so machine room-less traction equipment was installed to enable the largest capacity possible within the tight footprint of the new building.

The new pedestrian entrance will be of great benefit to people living and working south of the river, and will open up new travel opportunities providing a further stimulus to redevelopment and expansion of the city centre, and will support the continued regeneration of the southern quarter of the city.

Stannah continue to add to their portfolio of high-profile rail projects, helping Network Rail achieve their target of ‘Step-free access’ across the rail network.

The North West England and North Wales Stannah service branch, part of Stannah’s nationwide branch network, will be maintaining the lifts and escalators to ensure the safe flow of people and goods through this new entrance.www.stannahlifts.co.uk

The Portfolio Collection From Premdor,Presenting Style & InnovationWhen the Premdor product development team created the Portfolio collection, exhaustive research confirmed that cutting edge interior surface designs were rapidly emerging in boutique hotels, stylish restaurants, trendy bars and clubs and new style retail establishments. The brief for the Portfolio product development team therefore, was to not only develop exciting modern colours, textures and styles reflective of new trends, but to fully utilise Premdor’s manufacturing technologies to produce a range of ground breaking internal door designs both for now and in the future.

Further, the new collection should embody the use of the finest raw materials, with outstanding levels of craftsmanship to satisfy the most discerning Interior Designer, Architectural Technologist or Building professional. The Contemporary range is centred around four sub-ranges all equally versatile and each Individually striking. Mocha horizontal grain is characterised by rich modern tones. In contrast, Charcoal grey is presented in three options, horizontal grain, vertical grain and a horizontal with an elegant four line black inlay. Lastly in the Contemporary collection is the Light grey range. With an extensive choice of five unique looks this range is designed to excite.

Finally within the Portfolio collection comes Classic, highlighting Durador, Walnut, Ash and the timeless Oak. With stylish and simple shades, this range will add sophistication to any decorative effect.

Double Success For Bauder At National Roofing AwardsFlat roofing specialist Bauder was recognised at this year’s UK Roofing Awards, winning two of the prizes on offer for its work on Byker Wall in Newcastle and ROM’s manufacturing facility in Sheffield. The award winners were announced on May 13th at the Hilton Metropole in London, an event hosted by TV presenter Steph McGovern and overseen by the voice of the National Lottery Alan Dedicoat.

Now in its eleventh year, the Roofing Awards are an industry-wide competition that celebrates outstanding standards of workmanship and safety within the roofing industry. This year the level of competition was particularly high with almost 300 project entries being submitted for the fourteen award categories available. A wide range of criteria are taken into consideration by the judging panel when determining category winners including: degree

of difficulty, aesthetics, problem-solving and environmental qualities.

Bauder’s first win of the night came for its photovoltaic (PV) installation at the landmark, Grade II listed Byker Wall estate, which won the ‘Solar on Roofs’ category. As part of the £26 million refurbishment of the

residential properties, work was required to not only repair the failing roof but to also bring Byker Wall to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology

with the addition of a photovoltaic system. The works included converting the pitched metal roof back to its original flat roof status and replacing the waterproofing with Bauder’s high quality reinforced bitumen system, which was expertly installed by Hodgson Sayers. Four of the ten housing blocks were then fitted with 132 state-of-the-art PV Modules, enabling Byker Wall to generate at least 39.6 megawatt-hours of solar power each year.

Following on from this success, ROM Ltd was then chosen as the winning project for the ‘Reinforced Bitumen Membranes’ category from a group of four finalists that included two other Bauder projects. The phased roof refurbishment at the manufacturing facility involved replacing the failing waterproofing with over 9,250m2 of Bauder’s premium bituminous system, BTRS, which was installed by Mitie Tilley Roofing. The project had various health and safety implications, with the main-substructure proving unstable due to corrosion and the facility remaining operational throughout the works, however all remedial work was completed on time and to budget much to the delight of the client.

Bauder’s Managing Director, Andrew Mackenzie, expressed his delight with the company’s success at the awards ceremony, “Bauder is always delighted to be recognised by the Roofing Awards, which serve as an industry benchmark for quality and best practice. Byker Wall and ROM’s manufacturing facility illustrate the exceptional levels of workmanship that our approved contractors deliver and we are extremely proud of the work that has been performed by everyone involved with these projects.” www.bauder.co.uk

Aluprof's BIM Library - Level 2 Ready

The importance of having a complete library of BIM objects to hand and in the right format is a crucial step forward in order to meet the construction industrys' planned strategy efficiency targets for 2025, these include a 50% reduction in programme and a 33% reduction in overall construction costs. Aluprof are at the forefront of BIM technology and are already compliant with Revitt level 2 models, which is ahead of this years April deadline set by the government for public sector asset procurement.

Part of the BIM Toolkit project, Aluprof’s systems have been implemented under Uniclass 2015, a single unified classification system for any type of building construction or infrastructure project. For specifiers and fabrication customers of Aluprof, BIM models are available for immediate download from the company website www.aluprof.eu/en. Dedicated support is available from the London specification office and the UK head office in Altrincham, where more complex requests can be fulfilled.

Aluprof are currently looking at BIM Level 3 compliance, currently scheduled for adoption in 2019, this level suggests using a single source, shared project model held in a central location, such as a cloud server. By being accessible by all parties involved in the project, they should be able to work on and construct the same electronic model. Currently known as ‘OpenBIM’, BIM Level 3 is the first model which will fully connect the supply and data chain from start to finish creating end to end efficiencies throughout the construction life cycle. www.aluprof.eu

Geberit Helps Stately Home Go Green

Geberit Mapress Carbon Steel has been chosen for its ease of installation and no hot works credentials to install a biomass system at Saltram House, a magnificent National Trust owned Stately Home in Plymouth. One of many National Trust premises to get a renewable makeover as part of a general drive to improve the environmental credentials of its buildings, Saltram now enjoys heating and hot water courtesy of a biomass system, consisting of 220kW and 95kW boilers fuelled by pellets. A district heating system services the main house and the majority of other buildings on the site.

The installers' choice - "We use Geberit Mapress on 95% of our jobs," said James Howard, from Dunster Biomass, which installed the system at Saltram House. "It's quick to install, easy to use and reliable. The fact there's no need for hot works makes it ideal for historic buildings."At Saltram House, the new biomass system had to be installed within the confines of the existing building and its heating system, while ensuring that it could be easily removed if required. Faced with narrow doorways and cramped spaces, Geberit Mapress was the ideal solution. The age of the building and cramped environment also meant that solder was just not an option because of the fire risk. Geberit Mapress and its press fit assembly is particularly well-suited to jobs of this nature." www.geberit.co.uk

Exeter based Timóleon has provided a heating and ventilation solution for a self-builder to achieve his ambition of creating a new home, with a very low level of environmental impact and running costs. This results in a property with high standards of indoor air quality and comfort. The dwelling has been constructed as a single storey, deep plan structure within a walled garden in the village of Bradninch in Devon.

The ultra-sustainable design features not just an Omnie 7kW Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), delivering domestic hot water and warmth via the manufacturer’s Omnie Foilboard Floating UFH System, but also an Omnie Compact 185 Heat Recovery Unit (HRU), supplying pre- warmed air throughout.

Now with the rural retreat completed the Omnie equipment is fulfilling on all of the design intentions, as the owner of the property commented: “I wanted to build a home that was as low energy as possible and to take a responsible approach to the specification of its building services so that it would not only provide peace of mind for myself in terms of future running costs, but also make a positive contribution in respect of concerns over carbon reduction and our energy security.”

The accommodation comprises a spacious lounge-dining area orientated to a courtyard garden with two bedrooms plus a further office/third bedroom. There is also a main bathroom with shower and bath, a separate cloakroom close to the kitchen and a plant room containing all of the Omnie equipment. The LWD 70 ASx ASHP is ideal for installations where there are other properties within close proximity; generating as it does a noise level of just 45 dB at a distance of one metre. This single phase machine is very

efficient, with a typical Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.24 at design conditions A7/W35 which ensure low running costs whilst also qualifying for the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

Representing the latest in heat pump technology from renowned German specialist, Alpha InnoTec, the unit can achieve flow temperatures of up to 70 degrees centigrade using a low Global Warming Potential refrigerant (R290). The LWD70 ASx has a corrosion proof coating, which prolongs the life of the heat pump making it suitable for coastal areas, all Omnie heat pumps come with a 5 year parts warranty as standard.

Timóleon supported its design & supply with technical assistance at the specification stage, plus full installation drawings & heating schematics identifying information such as ideal positions for the manifolds for the UFH and the location for the HRU distribution using 75 mm diameter air ducts Additional technical support is provided with every heat pump with final commissioning and the 1 year back up (Gold) support service, which includes remote access package making it easy to monitor the performance of the heat pump.www.omnie.co.uk

ENQUIRY 22

Rinnai, manufacturer of the energy efficient range of Infinity continuous flow water heaters and a complete range of gas fired wall heaters, is providing a brand new heating and hot water solution to offices in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

CST Renewables - the building services engineers - were keen to get to grips with installing a new system. This included a bespoke boiler and hot water heating package. The first UK installation of the Rinnai system was at a large office building where CST had been called to assess the best energy efficient replacement for a failing forced draught, flued modular boiler set up. The old system was low efficiency and costing the client, a property leasing company, a substantial amount in repair bills annually.

The building is rented to a variety of organisations and businesses such as call and administration centre businesses. Mark Hillier-Rees of CST says: “This new Rinnai system is highly efficient - and due to its lack of moving parts and easy maintenance has very low annual service costs.” The large 100kW condensing heating boilers are ideal for providing heating to buildings such as the Merthyr Tydfil office block and are extremely flexible as they can also provide hot water when placed in a cylinder. The Rinnai boilers are also available in 50kW and 75kW sizes. Chris Goggin, Associate Director, Rinnai UK comments: “There are clear benefits in terms of efficiencies, when considering heating and hot water as two separate systems. I am pleased that we can provide two high efficiency market leading products in one simple turnkey solution.” www.rinnaiuk.com

To ensure the heritage of this significant collection, a new structure has now been built to house a number of historic aircraft, including Gloster Meteor T.7, De ‘Havilland Venom, De ‘Havilland Sea Vixen, Hawker Hunter T.7, Hawker Harrier GR.3 and English Electric Lightning F.53, plus the Blackburn Buccaneer S.1 which will soon be moved into the new building.

Demolition of the old building, including asbestos removal, was carried out, with the rebuild scheduled for completion within 10 weeks. When it came to the floor treatment, the application of a high performance non-slip coating was imperative: this would allow visitors to get up close to the aircraft safely and ensure the floor itself could withstand heavy traffic during the museum’s busiest times.

To meet these requirements, Bradite’s 2K Floor and Wall EW99 was specified. This two-pack water-thinned, epoxy coating and finish paint is designed for application to floors, walls, structural steel and machinery. Delivering a tough, hard-wearing film, EW99 is easy to clean and decontaminate, and it can be used with a low-slip additive for extra performance.

Ashley Colella, the museum’s manager, explains the progress of the rebuild and Bradite’s contribution: “First, we applied a thinned base coat of Bradite’s EW99 that was watered down. Then we applied two coats of EW99 mixed with aggregate to give us a low slip surface. We required a total of 385 litres to cover the new building’s floor area of 1805 square metres. This was left to dry for one week before the first three aircraft were brought in. By this time, the floor was suitably hardened and the Hawker Seahawk, Gloster Meteor and De ‘Havilland Venom were moved undercover for the first time in over 20 years.”

An added challenge arose when all aircraft and engines had to be moved up the length of the museum for arranging and positioning. Despite some of the engines weighing around 1.5 ton - and the heaviest aircraft weighing 12 ton - volunteers and staff were impressed that no damage occurred to the floor, thus demonstrating EW99’s durability and wear-resistance.

“As we brought in more equipment and displays, including our large collection of very heavy and awkward engines,” Ashley continues, “we were delighted to see that the floor paint was holding up with no problems. It withstood the weight of the aircraft and the tug without peeling or loosening, and even survived the unavoidable scratching and scuffing resulting from the forklift we were using. We were all extremely impressed with the way the newly painted floor is standing up to the punishment.”

Resistant to many chemicals and solvents, EW99 inhibits the growth of fungus and bacteria, and can also be used as an anti-graffiti coating in common internal areas. As there are no solvent fumes, no odour and no tainting of food, there is no discomfort or disruption caused to nearby operatives; this avoids the costly inconvenience of shutdowns during application. Safe after use, this floor paint is certified as class O for surface spread of flame to BS476.

EW99 delivers a spreading rate of approximately 12 square metres per litre and is surface dry in two hours, with overcoating possible after a minimum of 16 hours. Complete cure is achieved in six days. Recommended application is by brush and roller, by conventional air spraying or by airless spraying.

“In the case of the Gatwick Aviation Museum,” says James Burton, Bradite’s national sales manager, “initially we visited the site to see the base had been laid, the building being built, and the floor professionally prepared to the specification requests. After the allotted time and when the unit was weather-tight, we met with all the people of the museum to discuss Bradite EW99 for the floor. Our team then carried out regular visits to check on the preparation and application of our products. After three coats of EW99 were applied to the floor, the airframes were moved into their new home, ready for the opening of the museum on 25th March this year.”

For this project, Bradite’s SA12 aggregate was used in conjunction with EW99 to reinforce the low-slip finish. This additive, which consists of tough, hard-wearing particles, is suitable for use with all types of floor and deck paint to give a low slip surface in areas of heavy traffic and helps to prevent accidents on wet floor areas. www.bradite.com

Flooring Challenge Met By Remmers

The new 1,600m2 workshop facilities at The Trade Centre Wales in Neath, required a breathable anti-slip system to be installed due to the uncertain moisture levels of the relatively new substrate. The installers TPS360, measured the moisture levels during the installation and to facilitate the curing process, temporary heating and ventilation systems were used to reduce any moisture present. A FeRFA Type 3 high build floor coating system was then applied in two coats. Remmers BS3000 SG was selected as a high quality, damp tolerant resin, with a wide application spectrum and VOC free properties. ADD 250 Polymer Beads were then added to provide an anti-slip, textured finish to give a surface that remained easy to clean. The coating system was installed to a timed scheduled which tied in with other key equipment installation phases. www.remmers.co.uk

UZIN System Used In Plattens Fish & Chips Refurbishment

UZIN products were recently used to renovate the floor at Plattens Fish and Chip Shop in Wells-next-the-sea, Norfolk. This was a major redevelopment of the existing fish and chip shop’s restaurant and kitchen. The floor presented a particular challenge because several different products had been installed onto the floors over many years.Superior Finish (Contracts) Ltd turned to UZIN to ensure the installation was completed to the highest of standards, providing durability for the heavy footfall. The old floorcovering had to be removed, before 2 coats of UZIN PE 480 damp proof membrane was applied over the very old sub-floor. UZIN PE 280 primer was then applied, followed by a coat of UZIN NC 150 a heavy duty smoothing compound. Safety flooring was laid, capped and coved in the kitchen and preparation areas whist luxury vinyl tiles were installed in the front of house. Both floor coverings were stuck with UZIN KE 2000 S pressure sensitive adhesive. The job was exceptionally well finished resulting in a durable and attractive floor. www.uzin.co.uk

Looking For A Whitewashed Floor?Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen.

This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer. The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives.

Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low VOC content and low odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell.

Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available.

As a Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath is part of Bona’s network of highly trained wood floor specialists - independent wood floor companies who have received extra in-depth training in the use of Bona’s wood floor finishing products. www.bona.com

Forbo’s Floor Coverings Add Style At Matalan HQAn integrated range of Forbo floor coverings has been specified and installed throughout Maro Developments’ prestigious bespoke new office headquarters for Matalan at Knowsley. Forbo worked collaboratively with the developer, the main contractor Morgan Sindall, and Manchester-based project architect Fletcher Rae to agree the final specification.

The key objective for office areas was to deliver a high-quality finish with a ‘wow’ factor. The Create Space collection of plain and linear patterned

Tessera carpet tile ranges met all construction and performance demands and was selected for its quality, overall finish and the design flexibility offered.

Surestep and Safestep safety vinyls were installed in shower rooms, kitchens and other back of house areas where clean, crisp, slip resistant finishes were needed. For more public spaces and common front of house areas such as stairwells, where durable, resilient flooring with a more prestigious feel was required, linoleum from the Marmoleum Piano and Fresco collections was used.

The combination of performance, value for money and realism made Forbo’s Allura LVT in an oak wood effect an ideal solution for the staff canteen. Completing the integrated floor scheme. Eternal General Purpose Vinyl was fitted in one of the meeting rooms and 12mm grey Nuway Tuftiguard was installed at the main entrance to the headquarters.

John Schofield, Morgan Sindall Senior Design Manager, said: “Forbo put a lot of time and effort into the project in terms of providing numerous samples and alternative colours. Over the last 10 years or so, whenever I have worked with Forbo on various projects over the last ten years or so, they have always provided exemplary customer service and have been great to work with.”

Doors, Windows & Glazing

ESG, the UK’s largest independent glass processor, has recently continued its work for Transport for London by supplying the glass for the 2nd phase of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road tube station. The station is currently undergoing a multi-billion pound refit as part of the new Crossrail link due to open in 2018.

The entire station was closed at the start of the project and is now reopening one section at a time. Towards the end of 2014 the new ticket office and Oxford Street entrance were reopened and revealed a, Daniel Buren designed and ESG manufactured, black and white artwork printed onto glass. Recently the new Center Point entrance has opened to the public and the walls continue Daniels design. However for this section of the station, the black and white has been fused together with colour to create striking geometrical shapes.

ESG supplied over 150m² of toughened laminated glass split over 200 pieces. The coloured and black sections of the design were digitally printed and UV cured to the glass. To ensure maximum ink adhesion to the glass each panel was treated to an ESG developed pre-print wash treatment to remove any unseen dirt and oil. This treatment enables all of the printing to achieve BSI: ISO2409 adhesion standard.

The printing was carried out on 8mm toughened low iron and then laminated, with a white Vanceva interlayer to achieve the background, to create the 17.5mm toughened laminated final product. The final design is already receiving plaudits from the public as to how bright and modern the new look station is. www.esg.glass

Reynaers Provides Façades For Impressive Manchester Development

Manchester’s newest independent film hub and visual arts centre has an impressive façade using curtain wall products from Reynaers. The external cladding and roofing work on Home, found on the city’s First Street, was carried out by Prater. This was made possible due to funding from the European Union for a joint venture between Ask Developments and Manchester City Council.Overall, a total of 51 units of Reynaers’ curtain walling product CW 50 were installed, as well as Reynaers’ CS 68 aluminium windows. Reynaers was consulted about the design of the façade in the prefabrication stages to help ensure the system allowed for building movement and live loads.Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “Lead architect Ernst ter Horst’s brief was to make the building of the highest quality and present itself as warm and welcoming. He was inspired by ideas of filling the building with life and the playful interaction with daylight. Our curtain walling system Concept Wall 50 offered unlimited design freedom and maximum transparency for this build.”Netherlands-based architects Mecanoo International wanted to ensure there was a strong connection between inside and out. Home also needed a strong identity, so it developed a dramatic cantilevering prow to mark the front entrance to the building and shelter an external café terrace. The building’s triangular shape combined with soft, curved corners sets it apart from the adjacent developments, with its elevations articulated to protect against solar gain. www.reynaers.co.uk

Market-leading UK glass manufacturer, GLASSOLUTIONS, has played a key role in creating an optimal learning environment for students at Alford Academy’s new Community Campus in Aberdeenshire.

Main contractor Morrison Construction approached GLASSOLUTIONS to manufacture and install an attractive curtain walling system for the development, choosing glazing products carefully to create a space with excellent temperature control, effective ventilation and plentiful natural light.

In recent years, Alford Academy has found it increasingly hard to accommodate its large yearly intake of new pupils. With existing campus capacity at its limit, a £37 million contract was devised by Aberdeenshire County Council, in partnership with hub North and the Scottish Futures Trust, to create the school’s new Community Campus. The new site accommodates 960 pupils and has brought together the primary, secondary and senior years on a single site, as well as providing sport and leisure facilities for the wider community.

The concept for the Community Campus was based around the creation of a central social hub for students, with classrooms and study areas branching off from this central area. The social ‘hub’

area is two storeys high in places: this allows areas to be used flexibly for a variety of activities, as well as creating a large and airy space which lets in a considerable amount of natural light.

The wide range of purposes that the new campus was intended to fulfil meant that versatility was a particularly important aspect of the glazing specification. In order to create a safe, light, well-ventilated space for students, GLASSOLUTIONS

selected Metal Technology’s System 17 High Rise curtain walling system to form the building’s envelope. With a continuous thermal isolator providing a thermal break throughout, paired with thermally broken casement windows from Metal Technology’s System 4-20 range, the low U-value

of this configuration provides excellent thermal efficiency, maintaining a comfortable internal temperature for students and minimising the need for climate control. Large glass units were chosen for the project to maximise light transmittance and provide a bright interior.

Responses to the new campus have been overwhelmingly positive; the development has been praised for its light, airy interior and how well it has accommodated the needs of the students and wider community.

Jim Hanna, project director at Morrison Construction, said: “Working with our partners and suppliers, the Campus was finished ahead of the coming academic term… We are immensely proud to have been involved in bringing this fantastic new resource to fruition for the local community.”

The completed project has also been praised more widely by influential the construction industry. The development, along with project managers hub North, was named a finalist for the Community Development Project of the Year award at the Scottish Property Awards 2016.www.glassolutions.co.uk

“We’ve been an aïr Accredited Retailer from the beginning,” says Joe Solomons, Managing Director at Windows Etc. “We were looking for the next generation in aluminium sliding and bi-folding doors and we found aïr, just before it was launched.”“The aïr brand attracts a different type of client. They’re more design-aware and they’re looking for large panes of glass to let lots of light into their homes. They want something that’s both stylish and cost-effective - aïr meets those needs.”In this particular project, Window Etc’s clients wanted to create a multifunctional, open-plan living space, where they had plenty of room for entertaining. They were looking for wide-span glazed doors to merge their indoor and outdoor living spaces. They chose an aïr 600LS – a 6.3m wide, three pane sliding door with a flush threshold that blurs the lines between their stunning garden decking area and new open plan living extension.“It’s a really well-designed door system,” continues Joe. “We love the sightlines and the very square profile of the frame. The clever engineering of the stainless steel wheels gives the heavy panes a really easy glide. It’s these things that make aïr stand out from other aluminium sliding and bi-folding doors – things like the hardware range and the textured paint options give extra choice to customers.”aïrcoat, the textured paint, is available in 14 different aïrcoat colours and gives a stunning finish to this kind of modern installation. Lighting Up Leisure

This new swimming pool at Immingham includes some of the best examples of how the Kalwall® translucent daylighting system is used for leisure and sport activities. The £1.45 million transformation and creation of this stunning facility was designed by ENGIE - Architectural Consultancy for North East Lincolnshire Council with support from Sport England. It includes Kalwall cladding for all the walls in the new fitness suite and exercise studio. The choice of Kalwall mirrors specification of the same cladding several years ago for the adjacent Oasis Academy where the system is used for both roof and wall applications. This brings a sense of uniformity and symmetry across both sites. One of the main attractions of specifying high performance Kalwall is its unique effect on both the interior and exterior. Internally, rooms are bathed with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and healthy exercising environment. While being translucent, it also offers privacy. Externally, the elevations appear crisp, simple and inviting. When illuminated at night Kalwall will glow softly presenting a striking external appearance. Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. In addition, the even distribution and deep penetration of light through Kalwall means less artificial lighting is needed thereby reducing energy costs. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall

Doors, Windows & Glazing

New fenestration for an iconic listed arts centre at the University of Sussex presented a particular challenge for architects RH Partnership but the successful outcome has been achieved thanks to close collaboration with steel window experts Crittall.

The University’s Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts (ACCA) was designed in the 1960s by Sir Basil Spence and subsequently listed Grade 2* by English Heritage.

The building’s curved brick exterior is punctuated at ground floor level by steel windows and doors that, along with the rest of the structure, had fallen into disrepair.

Extensive consultation was undertaken by the Brighton-based architectural practice with English Heritage (now Historic England) and Brighton & Hove City Council’s conservation team for the most acceptable solution to replace the existing metal framed, single glazed windows and doors.

“RH Partnership have worked very closely with Crittall Windows to reproduce the patterns and profiles using W20 sections and to incorporate double glazed units,” says architect David Sweeney. “With large areas of glazing in the front-of-house spaces, the capability to add slim line double glazed units has drastically improved the thermal performance of this building.”

Solar control glass has also been added to particular south and east facing windows so as to reduce overheating during summertime and natural ventilation has been improved by an increase in openable windows and the introduction of trickle vents.

The complete refurbishment of the building, including a main auditorium with a flexible 350 seating arrangement, exhibition spaces, four differently-sized studios and teaching rooms and the development of an area beneath the auditorium to provide 33% more usable space than was envisaged in the original design, has provided the University with a cultural flagship structure.

Says David Sweeney: “Working on a Sir Basil Spence, Grade 2* Listed Building such as this can be a real challenge. The solution provided by Crittall Windows has been very successful both in terms of its performance and the appearance of this 1969 iconic building.”

Also on the University campus a second Sir Basil Spence, Grade 2* listed structure, the Chichester 1 building, is undergoing refurbishment and, once again, Crittall products – the Corporate W20 and Corporate 2000 windows – have been specified.

Corporate W20 windows and doors offer designers great versatility including the ability to create or reproduce many styles. They deliver very slim sightlines, are English Heritage approved, and find widespread favour with planners and conservationists. Corporate 2000 are equally suited for residential, institutional and commercial applications, and can be used to produce unusual and innovative window wall designs. Major user sectors are offices, hotels, hospitals, universities and schools.www.crittall-windows.co.uk

WWW.vaSTERN.Co.ukArticle By: Vastern TimberTitle: The return of Buying British is innovation in itselfAuthor: Tom Barnes

Tom Barnes of Vastern Timber discusses the many advantages of choosing British timber and takes a look at three areas where Britain leads the way.

It is widely understood that wood is amongst the most sustainable of building materials. However, it is not always fully appreciated that there are different degrees of sustainability when talking about timber. Issues such as the management of woods and forests, as well as the carbon footprint incurred during transport over long distances all impact on the degree of sustainability contained in a piece of wood. And of course there are the social communities that are either impacted by bad forestry practice, or which are reliant on the timber industry.

By choosing British timber you know that you are choosing the most sustainable option. The UK woodland and forestry industry has excellent standards and in choosing British timber you are helping to support further improvement as well as supporting communities that rely on the timber industries.

Sustainability is not the only advantage to be gained from choosing British timber, especially hardwood.

Oak remains the most iconic of British hardwoods and has been used in construction for centuries. Original oak beams continue to support structures more than 500 years old. The traditional popularity of English

oak can largely be explained by the availability of the trees and durability of the wood. As a natural building material, oak is extremely hard to destroy; large sections will resist fires intense enough to melt metal and will flex to accommodate the natural movements of a building.

English oak is considered to be the strongest of the oaks because it has a more interlocking grain than oak from continental Europe, which is characteristically more mild and straight grained.

While imported oak can often be cheaper, there is a sustainability price to pay if the wood is imported. There is also a great deal of difference in design flexibility. Local British sawmills are easy to access, and as well as the option to inspect timber and cuts before choosing, the designer will benefit from more flexibility in cuts from their local sawmill, especially curved and shaped wood.

Of the other native hardwoods, sweet chestnut is proving increasingly popular for external cladding. Vastern Timber’s award winning Jointed British Sweet Chestnut Cladding delivers the aesthetic of oak, as well as specification choice

and environmental benefits. The wood comes from well-managed, sustainable sources and makes for a beautiful and superior cladding system.

British sweet chestnut cladding is hard-wearing, strong and durable, and relatively light when compared to other hardwood cladding, making it ideal for exterior use. Additionally, sweet chestnut is known to be a very stable timber, resulting in less movement, distortion or splitting. It has a similar golden colour to oak, but with stronger grain and occasional dark brown mineral streaks and will weather to a natural silver colouring if left untreated.

Early in 2016 Vastern Timber launched Brimstone, the first commercially available thermally modified British timber. Thermal modification involves using intense heat to change the structural properties of wood. The combination of high heat and steam ‘cooks’ the sugars and resins out of the wood, leaving nothing for mould, fungus and bacteria to feed on, resulting in significantly higher levels of durability than non-modified timber. The thermal modification process involves no chemicals and does not rely on impregnating the timber. Unlike most other treatment processes, thermal modification reaches to the core of each piece, rather than simply treating the surface.

Thermal modification results in products that are significantly more stable than non-modified timbers, meaning they expand and contract less when faced with changes in ambient temperature and humidity, making them a superior solution for a range of uses. Additionally, the superior stability results in significantly less cupping and distortion when used outside. The full modification of thermally modified hardwood allows for cutting and re-working without a loss of performance and without the need for additional treatment.

Brimstone enjoyed an enthusiastic reception at Ecobuild 2016, with visitors and media clearly excited about a product that closes the sustainability loop and which addresses growing concerns about sustainable, local sourcing. Through quality and innovation such as Brimstone, British timber will continue to be the superior

choice, especially for those looking to ensure full sustainability in their designs and projects.

Established in 1904, and with two sawmills in Wiltshire, Vastern Timber specialises in cutting and manufacturing native

grown timbers including English oak, sweet chestnut, ash, sycamore and larch. Cutting and processing its own logs allows Vastern Timber to offer a range of species, grades and specifications that are not widely available from other merchants.

In February 2016 Vastern Timber secured the new Grown In Britain license, which indicates that all wood sold under the license originates from well managed woodlands in Great Britain. This accreditation is similar to the FSC license but is only applicable to native woodlands.

WWW.WavIN.Co.ukArticle By: WavinTitle: Waterless Traps Are The Key To Provide Vital Space-Saving & Performance BenefitsAuthor: Tim Wootton, Manager of Technical Design

With a combined challenge of space restrictions and the need to meet regulations on preventing sewer gases entering homes, plumbing professionals are looking for compact as well as effective solutions for kitchen and bathroom appliances and fittings. Tim Wootton, Manager of Technical Design at Wavin explains how an alternative to water-based traps delivers a host of space-saving and practical in-use benefits for homeowners and the industry.

Modern houses present a range of spatial challenges to plumbers when it comes to installing pipework to appliances and fittings, whether it is an en-suite bathroom where the homeowner wants a pedestal washbasin, a new bath or shower installation, or simply an integrated waste bin under the kitchen sink. Installing traditional water traps to appliances and fittings required to prevent sewer gases entering a house by Part H can often mean that space is compromised which can in turn compromise the design. However a compact and versatile option is available which can enable installers to meet regulations which does not rely

on water being present to operate.

Water-based traps such as ‘P’, ‘S’ and bottle trap varieties have been used for many decades but can fail if water is not present, as a result of a variety of causes. HepvO from Wavin on the other hand is a unique self-sealing waste valve

which has a purpose-designed membrane which creates an airtight seal between the living space and the drainage system meaning it does not need water to operate. It opens under water pressure of an emptying appliance after which it closes to form a tight seal.

Freeing up space and designHepvO is a highly effective compact alternative to a traditional waste trap on any appliance and on all types of sanitary systems. Together with its slim line design the product’s ability to be installed vertically or horizontally delivers space saving opportunities, as well as time and cost saving benefits as a simpler system design can be achieved. In addition traditional secondary vent pipes or valves are not needed thanks to HepvO’s ability to act as an air admittance valve.

By installing HepvO horizontally under a bath or shower, plumbing professionals can avoid having to cut the floor to accommodate the U-bend of a traditional trap. As an alternative solution they may consider installing a shallow trap, however this is likely to be in breach of regulations; instead using the versatile, waterless HepvO means this risk is avoided.

The design flexibility offered by HepvO comes into its own in bathroom layouts, because its design providing ventilation allows the pipe run to be extended from 1.7m to 3m without needing to increase the pipe size from 32mm. It also makes it easier to install slim line pedestals as the product’s design means this allows the waste pipe to drop in a straight line from the appliance outlet.

In the kitchen, many homeowners wish to maximise storage space under the kitchen sink by installing an integrated waste bin, and HepvO is ideal for opening up the space beneath required to do this unlike

more bulky traditional traps. HepvO also allows a greater number of appliances to be connected without risking pressure fluctuations. The valve has been tested by Wavin to show it operates silently even under abnormal pressure. A further unique benefit of the HepvO valve is that it can be attached to the waste of high efficiency boilers and air conditioning units.

HepvO is available in compact 32mm and 40mm sizes and is manufactured under a strict quality management system which is approved to BS EN ISO 9001 and Kitemarked to ATS 5200-047:2005. Installing HepvO in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations will ensure that an installation complies with the requirements of BS EN 12056 Part 2 Code of Practice for Sanitary Pipework, and Document H of the Building Regulations 2002 ‘Drainage and Waste Disposal, with respect to seal integrity.

HepvO provides the answer for freeing up space and design choices for plumbers and their clients in domestic settings, and offers an innovative engineered alternative to water-based solutions which offers proven reliability.

Certified ShoweringCertification is becoming increasingly important in the project sector. BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes aim to encourage more efficient use of water and energy; and WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) also has a compliance scheme that is a legal requirement in the UK for all commercial buildings. Hansgrohe’s new Crometta range of showerheads ensures peace of mind as it is WRAS certified and the EcoSmart models have special spray nozzles and a flow limitation system that reduce water flow to nine or even six litres per minute, depending on the model. This means that less energy is needed to heat water. The Hansgrohe Crometta range comprises overhead and hand showers, shower sets and showerpipes. The Crometta hand shower offers an enjoyable showering experience and a choice of up to two spray modes. www.hansgrohe.com/design

Bathroom Furniture With Additional Storage Space

Bathroom furniture links to ceramics and determines the overall look of the bathroom through design, materials and colour. It provides additional practical

storage space to accommodate bathroom essentials in an orderly way. Wall-mounted or with feet on the ground is not only a question of taste when selecting suitable bathroom furniture: wall-mounted models have a visible lightness and offer plenty of space so that cleaning the floor becomes easier. By contrast, the floor-standing version scores with more storage space and is the perfect alternative if walls do not allow safe mounting. Following the success of the floor-standing models in the L-Cube furniture series, design-conscious customers can now benefit from floor-standing options in the additional series of Vero, x-Large and Happy D.2. Their design offers more storage capacity at the bottom of the units than their wall-mounted counterparts and elegantly integrates into any bathroom scheme. 5 More Remodelling Tipsfrom Hayley Fenn, UK head of Granite Transformations

The latest home improvement report from Barclays indicates that over half (53%) of UK homeowners would choose to remodel their existing properties, rather than move to a new house. The most desirable home improvement is a designer kitchen, with an ensuite bathroom also high on the wish list. Remodelling homes is my business, particularly kitchens and bathrooms, so here are 5 more affordable tips for enhancing your living space and adding value to your property.

add an ensuite – demand for ensuite facilities is on the rise, so you could turn an adjoining room or underutilised space into a walk-in bathroom adjacent to a bedroom. Slimline agglomerate granite, quartz, recycled glass or porcelain water-repellent finishes and modern space-saving suites will enable remodelling even a compact room, with large floor tiles visually linking the adjoining areas.

Explore magical mosaics – modern tile laying systems mean that genuine Italian glass mosaics are quicker and easier to fit, adding an unmistakeable touch of luxury in the kitchen, bathroom or dining room. Choose classic subway styles, mix’n’match ‘mosaics on a mattress’, exclusive designer patterns, even stained glass effects, all non-porous, wipe clean, durable and beautifully textured. There’s even the option of your own custom mosaic design.

Go island style – in the kitchen or as a room divider in a kitchen-diner, a standalone island unit offers extra storage and casual dining. The island countertop, with down-to-the-floor waterfall ends, can either show off your main worktop finish or add a splash of colour with a contrasting, bold finish. A ‘dining island’, with cantilevered top and stylish stools, helps focus the kitchen area as the hub of the home and family living generally.

Pimp a downstairs loo – you can transform a humble downstairs loo or closet into an eyecatching visitor cloakroom, wowing guests and letting your creativity run wild. Quality glass mosaic wallpaper can add drama, especially with downlighters picking out reflective highlights, while lighter agglomerate floor tiles help create an illusion of space. Modern corner sinks and close-coupled WCs maximise the use of floorspace, while presenting a clean, clinical look.

What a shower – there’s definitely a trend toward bigger, better showers, such as walk-in enclosures, double showers for convivial use, even complete wetrooms. Modern, water-resistant and virtually seamless shower liners, floor-to-ceiling wall cladding and feature floor tiles are all options in your makeover palette, together with large glass panels and shower enclosures, china and acrylic base trays, and modern user-friendly fixtures like hydromassage columns.

Perhaps the best thing about my remodelling tips is that they can be mostly carried out within your existing room layouts, without re-siting the plumbing and electrical connections, and by simply overlaying the worktops, tiles and bathroom surfaces that you want to replace. That means less ripping out, less dust and debris, and less household disruption. If I tell you also that most of our finishes are eco-friendly, made from recycled materials, then you’ll be happy that you won’t be damaging the environment or contributing to unwanted landfill. What’s more, our Granite Transformations showrooms have all the experts and installers to help plan your remodelling project and do all the work for you. Can’t be bad.

Quietly Broadcasting At BBC Worldwide

The BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane London is world renowned for its television output over many years. Completed in February last year, much of the interior was extensively redesigned by HOK architects, with refurbishment and construction carried out by the BDL Group, one of the largest specialist dry-lining contractors in the UK. One of the key factors was to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum and reverberation time reduced to ensure a pleasant and calm environment over very large areas.

The solution was high performance Troldtekt acoustic panels which were used to line all the ceilings and the soffit around the circular atrium. The panels were fitted to wood battens fixed to the concrete ceiling as ceiling panels. Prior to fixing, the fine structure panels were factory painted by Troldtekt in a light grey finish.

Commenting on the finished project, BDL managing surveyor Elliot Bryant said, “We found that these panels were very easy to handle and install. We were also impressed with their acoustic performance and attractive unifying appearance.” Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and fire safety.

They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left unpainted or painted in virtually any RAL colour. www.troldtekt.co.uk

Pendock Boosts Retail Environment At Booths

When an ambitious and enterprising grocer said in 1847 that his aim was “to sell the best goods he could buy in shops staffed with first-class assistants,” it is not perhaps surprising that this philosophy remains at the heart of a business that has survived two wars and several recessions.

In fact, Booths has just relocated one of its stores to Poulton-le-Fylde – and the supermarket’s ethos to be the very best can be seen reflected in the selection of high quality column casings from Pendock for the interior fit-out. Ordinary steel stanchions to support the roof at Booths were simply not considered to offer the right impression and the main sub-contractor was tasked with sourcing columns that were functional, and attractive.

The contractor immediately turned to Pendock Limited, knowing that the specialist supplier would come up with a solution that could offer both style and substance to the new store. Pendock supplied nine column casings to surround the standard structural steel sections: three oval in appearance and the other six circular. For continuity of style, both types are clad with attractive brushed finish aluminium bonded to the plywood casings up to one metre in height, while above this a RAL 7037 Dusty Grey shade of the company’s Mouse Laminate was specified, rising to ceiling height.

A 15 mm shadow gap marks the junction while ‘top hat’ feature joints with an aluminium insert rise up the full length of the casings. The 150 mm high toe and 160 mm head collars are also finished in the Dusty Grey laminate. www.pendock.co.uk

Antarctica Corian® Transforms Historic Manchester Office

Bluesky Design Interiors have transformed a former canalside warehouse into an exciting and dynamic workspace for Well Pharmacy in Manchester.Combining the listed building's original features and character with contemporary styling, the team created a bespoke reception centrepiece in Antarctica Corian® from CDUK. Fabricated by Production TM Ltd, the 14m² desk was complemented by a matching waiting bench in the landlord's lobby. The design concept is based on the building’s location. The shape of the desks reflects the ripples in the canal water, creating a simple desk that has an organic form.

Angles with softened corners were added to graduate between the desk height and counter height sections of the desk and a similar detail followed in the lobby desk graduating from desk height to seating height. The sleek lines of the desk contrast with the textured timber and exposed walls of the building’s interior. www.cdukltd.co.uk

ArmourFx Timber Effect panels were specified for the renovation of the latest Las Vegas strip hotel by Elkus Manfredi Architects. The Boston-based architects have converted the original Imperial Palace hotel into a lavish property specifically designed for a millennial guest.

The new Linq Hotel features 2,500 rooms, casino, retail space, meeting centre, pool deck, vortex roof and full service spa – featuring a corridor of custom-finished ArmourFx panels. Elizabeth Lowrey, Principal and Director of interior Architecture at Elkus Manfredi Architects explored the idea of ‘instagramable’ backdrops within the property. This was done to redefine the hotel’s purpose in the city, and also with the millennial audience’s heavy use of social media in mind.

“The overall challenge for Elkus Manfredi Architects was to reinvent Caesar’s outdated Imperial Palace hotel property in Las Vegas into an entirely new experience that appeals to the next generation of Las Vegas guests. From the murals on the walls, the thought bubbles in the meeting spaces, the colour-changing 3535 bar, the carpet design in the corridors, VIP area and

‘living room’, to the tile pattern and wallcovering in the spa – the purpose of was to create that ‘instagramable’ backdrop” she said.

Timber Effect panels are created from Douglas Fir planks that are hand worked to achieve different aesthetic qualities. The panels offer great design options, often replacing exotic or expensive timber for commercial projects. ArmourFx Timber Effect panels have been used to replace or match Shou-Sugi-Ban Japanese charred planks or, as in the project, Mountain Pine Beetle blue-stain timber.

Crafted especially for decorative wall cladding, ArmourFx Timber Effect panels are available in four designs and colours. ‘Original’ and ‘Shuttered’ highlight the elegant grain of the wood whilst ‘Rugged’ and

‘Cinder’ are further hand distressed to give a more aged texture and surface patina. All panels are cast in a unique polymer-modified gypsum resin mix for added durability. In the USA, country specific colours and finishes are available. www.armourcoat.com

Project Goes Swimmingly With Marmox MultiboardSwimming pools present a notoriously aggressive environment for building materials including reinforced concrete, so it is a measure of Marmox Multiboard’s inherent durability and other attributes that it has been specified for an unusually challenging refurbishment contract at a leisure centre in Peterborough. The Regional Fitness & Swimming Centre is just a short walk from Peterborough Cathedral in the city centre and is popular with families as well as clubs and schools, attracted by the facilities and modern styling. Unfortunately, however, the warm moist conditions had caused areas of the paintwork around insides of the very large skylights to peel. High above the water and with asbestos present in the original lining panels, this meant a maintenance nightmare. Main contractor Amey was successful in tendering for the

wider project, but brought in Commercial Rope Access with its team of abseillers to tackle relining the nine rooflights: each of which measures 8.5 x 4.5 metres and is five metres deep. Half-size sheets of Marmox Multiboard, measuring 1250 x 600 mm, were able to be fixed directly over the top of the existing asbestos based substrate, the Multiboards also offer a greatly improved thermal performance which will help prevent problems of condensation forming. The boards had been treated with one coat of EP150 on the reverse side and received a further two coats on the visible face. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or xPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. www.marmox.co.uk

Encasement Keeps On Running With Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre

An extension to the Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre at Farnborough Sixth Form College, to provide additional facilities for students, is using Quadra pre-formed plywood column casings, which were supplied and installed by Encasement, to conceal structural steelwork and improve interior aesthetics.Originally opened in 2007 in honour of the British double Olympic gold medallist, this latest expansion of the college’s wide-ranging sports and P.E. facilities is designed to link the Dame Kelly Holmes Centre with a separate sports hall, while also providing much needed additional recreation and social space for students. The new annexe, which also incorporates a large foyer area, uses extensive glazed curtain walling that extends for more than 50 metres from the new entrance along the full length of the building and is supported by 16 structural columns, which are concealed by the rectangular Quadra casings. Manufactured from strong 8mm thick pre-formed plywood, 15 of the casings measure 368mm x 200mm, while the final one is 368mm x 350mm to accommodate a double structural support. Each casing is finished in durable Formica ‘Dusty Jade’ matt green laminate. The casings also incorporate matching infill strips to give an integrated finish to the vertical joints and feature 100mm high brushed aluminium collars at ceiling and floor level. While most of the Quadra casings stand 3.0 metres high, during installation Encasement needed to trim and tailor some casings to allow for two changes in the level of the floor, which increases along the building’s length of the extension by approximately 300mm. www.encasement.co.uk

Hull City Planners Give Trespa The Thumbs Up!A landmark development of sustainable, energy efficient homes has given a Hull council estate a vibrant splash of colour, thanks to Trespa® Meteon® cladding panels. Villa Place, a terrace of five three-bedroomed houses, has been built for the Goodwin Development Trust on the Thornton Estate in West Hull. The aim was to provide tenant families with a high quality home using modular construction, renewable energy sources and recycling to reduce wastage.

Fully occupied by the end of April, the homes feature photovoltaic panels, a communal rainwater harvesting tank, grey water recycling, restricted water usage and triple glazed windows and doors. But whereas these facilities are not obvious from the outside, Villa Place cannot fail to catch the eye. Its vibrant palette of colours created by Trespa® Meteon® panels were specified for the rainscreen cladding system, with four different shades used on each of the five dwellings.

“The client was looking for something completely different, something that stood out from the estate in all respects,” says Daniel Hyde from architects Hodsons. Each of the dwellings were constructed from four prefabricated modular units that were craned into position on site. The Trespa® Meteon® panels that were installed once the units were erected, delineate each individual modular unit. “When we started looking for cladding we found such bold colours in the Trespa® Meteon® range. We asked for samples and what we received was awesome,” says Mr Hyde.

Hull City Council planners raised no objection to the colour scheme, or any other aspect of the development, so Villa Place went ahead. “But there were other aspects of Trespa’s offer that impressed the architects,”explains Mr Hyde. “Trespa is committed to sustainable development and strives to improve minimise the impact of its operations and products. Trespa® Meteon® uses up to 70% wood fibres from FSC™ or PEFC™ sources and the lifespan of the panels was significantly better than anything else available,” he says.

This was the first occasion that Hodsons had specified Trespa® products but it will not be the last. “Bungalows are in demand now in Hull,” says Mr Hyde, “and, as a result of Villa Place, the Goodwin Trust, working with Hull City Council, is now planning to build 22 modular bungalows using Trespa® Meteon® panels to achieve the same sort of effect.” Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative, high-pressure compact laminate with an integral surface manufactured using Trespa’s unique in-house technologies that utilise dry-forming and electron beam curing. www.trespa.com

Glassolutions Brings Together Comfort And Sustainability At Winnersh Triangle OfficesLeading UK designer, manufacturer and installer of commercial glazing products GLASSOLUTIONS has given a new multi-occupancy office block at a Thames Valley business park a sustainable edge, with the company’s installation of solar control curtain walling providing exceptional thermal efficiency for the building.Spanning 85 acres in the heart of the Thames Valley, the Winnersh Triangle business park provides business and industrial space for a diverse variety of enterprises, and is home to over 50 businesses, including Virgin Media, Bang & Olufsen, and Intel.GLASSOLUTIONS was contracted to manufacture and install 3400m2 of curtain-wall façade for a new multi-occupancy office block at the Winnersh Triangle site. Sustainability and efficiency are at the core of the Winnersh Triangle’s ethos, so this needed to be factored into the planning process: solar control glass was desired, and the client’s requirements for air tightness were particularly exacting. To adhere to Winnersh Triangle’s exacting sustainability specifications, GLASSOLUTIONS employed a variety of different elements to maximise the efficiency of the building’s envelope. Schueco FW60+ and FW60+ SG curtain walling systems were installed: with a thermal rating of 1.5w/m2k, these were the ideal choice to aid internal climate control. 6mm SGG COOL-LITE SKN174 panes were used for the outer glazing, paired with a 16mm argon warm edge spacer bar to reduce thermal bridging. Additionally, a distinctive and complex brise soleil, designed by EPR Architects, was engineered and installed by GLASSOLUTIONS to manage the solar gain of the facade, the loads of which were carried entirely by the curtain wall system.

Working with main contractor Wates and London based EPR Architects, work progressed swiftly and the installation was completed in November 2015. The brief outlined at the beginning of the project was met and surpassed: the exceptional solar control properties of the building’s glazing specification have been extremely effective at reducing glare, controlling heat transmission, and minimising the need for air conditioning inside the building.Paul Rose, Commercial Manager at GLASSOLUTIONS, said: “GLASSOLUTIONS’ installation at Winnersh Triangle has been highly successful. With Wates and EPR, we’ve helped create an office space which will be comfortable for its occupants and kinder to the environment, as well as being less expensive to heat and cool. The Winnersh Triangle business park places a strong focus on creating sustainable, energy-efficient accommodation for its tenants - it’s great to be involved in a project which will make a positive impact in so many ways.”GLASSOLUTIONS’ glazing installation has provided more than solar control for the Winnersh Triangle building’s sustainability credentials: the glazing installation recently achieved an Air Tightness Rating of 2.1m3/hr/m2, exceeding the very tight requirement of 3m3/hr/m2. This has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the contractors and architects involved: Wates Project Manager Darren Grinham described the project as an “excellent delivery”, adding that “the air test results are very good, and one we should all be very proud of.” www.glassolutions.co.uk

Dural And Sureset Hit Top Gear To Provide Beautiful Resin Flooring For Prestigious Jaguar Land Rover ShowroomNestled deep within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France lies Automation Vénissieux – a huge outlet containing many world leading automotive brands and their showrooms. In May 2016, Jaguar Land Rover opened the doors to their new showroom. However, by March local suppliers were unable to fulfil their requirements for their resin bound paving. In turn, they contacted SureSet and Dural. Within weeks, both companies were able to work together to create a stunning resin bound paving complete with bespoke premium movement joints.

a luxury car manufacturer with a luxurious eye for detailWith the opening date looming for Jaguar Land Rover’s new showroom, the Architect and Developer were unable to find a suitable local resin supplier. They had to look further afield, and in doing so turned to SureSet and Dural. Dural quickly set to work to create the premium movement joints required for the installation.

The speckled infill had to match the SureSet natural aggregate resin bound paving – Norwegian Pearl. Dural are able to colour match their range of expansion joints to any colour in the RAL range, and with the added speckled effect the joints would blend seamlessly with the resin bound flooring. SureSet quickly arranged the delivery, complete with their own installation team, and completed the installation over two days at the beginning of April. A total area of 407m2 of 6mm Norwegian Pearl had been laid over the grounds of the prestigious showroom.

The movement joints were laid at the end of the gate tracks, directly above the subfloor joints, where they provide effective stress relief and movement protection. Here, the robust 15mm aluminium based profiles are designed to cope with heavy stresses and then distribute them evenly between the subfloor and resin bound floor covering. The movement joints exceed BS5385 therefore Architects and Specifiers are given confidence that they are fit for purpose and will protect the integrity and aesthetics of the seamless resin bound paving.

Resin bound paving – the advantagesResin bound paving is becoming more and more popular, covering many sectors including residential, commercial, industrial and others. It is clear to see why. The physical properties of the natural aggregate and resin combine to form an extremely durable surface which will give years of outstanding performance. It is also virtually impossible for cracks or displacement, especially when used in conjunction with expansion joints. The durability of the surface means it can withstand heavy loadings, for example cars.

In addition to the practical benefits of resin bound surfacing, the aesthetics are guaranteed for many years from UV degredation and colour discolouration. So it will remain beautiful for many years to come.

Another advantage for resin bound surfaces is that they are fully permeable and as a result water is able to drain through the surface effectively, preventing any surface water build up. A good quality resin bound surface will be fully compliant with the requirements of Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), which was introduced in 2011 to better manage water run off in urban areas.

SureSet are specialists in permeable resin bound paving and have been supplying high quality resin surfacing for nearly 20 years.

New RECYFIX® MONOTEC Drains Car Park At The New Travelodge Weston Super MareA new Travelodge in Weston Super Mare, Somerset has opened its doors to guests in March 2016. The hotel is located on Beaufighter Road, some three miles from the Grand Pier and includes a newly laid asphalted main car park with 47 spaces drained by a 60 metre run of RECYFIx® MONOTEC, Hauraton’s new high capacity channel system.

Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIx® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system in January, the new Travelodge being the first installation of the system in the United Kingdom. The MONOTEC channels installed in the Travelodge car park have a nominal grating width of 100mm, an overall height of 380mm and are suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The channels provide a cross-section of 355.5cm2 and have a high attenuation volume.

The RECYFIx® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.

The front asphalted car park, with 15 spaces, at the new Travelodge is drained with over 40 metres of RECYFIx® PRO 100 channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® Class C250, HEELSAFE gratings which have a similar appearance of

the MONOTEC grating. This HEELSAFE grating has super smooth, elliptical slot openings where the moulded bars have slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, this ensures surface water is directed into the slots helping eliminate any cross-flow over the grating which helps optimise the channels attenuation volume.

Cat Jones, Hauraton‘s Project Manager for the South West comments; “We worked closely with the ground workers to ensure the drainage systems specified were going to be discreet, blended in well with the desired design effect and meet the loading Class required. It was particularly pleasing this first installation of our tough RECYFIx® MONOTEC channels here in the UK went so well, with a maximum weight of 10.4kg the contractor found the channels supplied, easy to handle and install with no breakages reported during the installation process. Matching Trash Boxes and End Caps were also supplied. All Hauraton surface water drainage systems’ comply with European Standards (hENs) and carries the CE mark”.

Malcolm Benham, Operations Director for the main contractors Pavenet Limited comments, “The RECYFIx® channel runs were easy to install and user friendly. With the job complete, we had a day of very heavy rain and were impressed that both car parks were effectively drained with no puddles on site”.

Aluminium Becomes A Decking Favourite

External Works

A manufacturer of patented aluminium open grilles has tapped into widespread demand for a more practical alternative to traditional timber decking.

Yorkshire-based neaco has received a high volume of specifications for its unique Techdek system as garden decking, sun terraces, external walkways and balcony flooring. Many architects, designers, landscaping professionals and contractors have been quick to appreciate Techdek’s advantages: the product is non-toxic, non-combustible, corrosive-free, extremely durable and easy to install without requiring hot works such as welding. A patented swage-locked construction between bars enables high structural efficiency and load-bearing capacity.

neaco’s national sales manager, Peter Melia, comments: “We have been attracting a lot of specifications from projects which require replacements for timber decking and terraces – Techdek is virtually maintenance-free, which gives it a clear advantage over wood which can be vulnerable to the elements. The erratic British weather can cause wood to expand and contract with fluctuations in temperatures, damaging the fabric of the timber.”

“It almost goes without saying that dampness and wood are an uneasy mix. Rain and moist atmospheric conditions are a major cause of decay and deterioration. Regular surface treatment is required to protect the grain. Aluminium decking is an excellent alternative – our grilles are available with a ribbed surface for anti-slip performance. Our advanced manufacturing facilities can even precision-cut bespoke holes in the decking panels to accommodate existing garden features - we can engineer these to outline unique shapes such as the base of tree trunk.”

Techdek has served a wide variety of architectural uses encompassing balcony flooring, cladding, roof access walkways, screening, ventilation, bridge cycle/pedestrian ways and solar shading. All products are backed by a Lifetime Guarantee.www.neaco.co.uk

James Latham Supports Community Project With Accoya®

James Latham has supplied a community project with Accoya – the high performance, modified and long life wood – that has transformed an abandoned, overgrown area in Bristol into a thriving pocket park designed for storytelling.

The Accoya was used to create an eye-catching piece of sculpture in the form of a snaking bench which was designed by architecture students from UWE (University of the West of England) and was made by contemporary furniture makers Ooma Design of Corsham (oomadesign.com)

Through consultation with local residents, it was decided that sharing stories is a group activity that can be enjoyed by all ages and provide a platform for communication.

Dr Rachel Sara, Associate Professor in Architecture at UWE commented, “The team wanted to create a piece of sculpture, that when placed on site, transformed the area into a space tailored for storytelling. The sculpture is expressed as a continuous curved bench

containing and sheltering a focused story circle and the seating can accommodate small groups and individuals.

“We are extremely grateful to James Latham’s depot at Yate for having supplied Accoya wood. Accoya is an extensively proven and high performance wood and because of the modification technique that is used, it is ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications. I know both the students and the team at Ooma Design have been really impressed with it.”

Andy Duffin, Operations Director of Lathams Limited said, “By creating this park, the team has inspired the community to engage with and maintain a unique area of green space within the urban street scape of Bedminster which otherwise would have remained an overgrown, disused space to store building waste. We were delighted to help and to see how Accoya had been used in such and imaginative and original application.” www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Portakabin Constructs ‘Pop Up’ Learning Hub For UCL In Just 2 Days As Pressure On Universities Increases To Meet Rising Demand For Higher EducationWith the end of the recruitment cap on undergraduate numbers in England now taking effect, the requirement for upgrading and expanding learning facilities continues to rise to meet the increased demand for higher education.

An extra 30,000 student places have been made available in England this year, and the Russell Group has estimated that more than £9 billion is being spent on capital projects by its 24 world-class universities, with a large proportion going towards new high quality learning facilities.

One of the Russell Group of universities is University College London (UCL) where Portakabin constructed an innovative ‘pop up’ learning hub in central London in just nine weeks from receipt of order to handover. This is to help address the surge in student numbers and was achieved with no disruption to teaching.

The two-storey modular building will be in use for two years until significant elements of UCL’s major capital programme to provide new permanent and refurbished teaching space is completed.

The new learning hub was installed in just two days ready for the start of the academic year. It would have taken many weeks had the building been constructed using site-based building methods.

Commenting on the project, Sam Williams, Capital Projects Manager at University College London, said, “We are really impressed with the performance of the Portakabin team. We needed facilities of the highest standard delivered in the shortest possible timescale. This was achieved and it is an excellent, robust building which has been positively received and is being well used. The vinyl wrap has really enhanced the facility and internally we have varied room sizes to suit the type of learning – from large lectures to smaller seminar working groups.”

“The project team was fast and responsive, which was key to the success of the project. We are also very happy with the quality of finish and the

additional elements which give the building a permanent feel and further improve the student experience.”

The learning hub accommodates a lecture theatre for up to 100 students and has three smaller seminar rooms. Portakabin supplied decking around the building, an access ramp, stairs up to the entrance, air conditioning, emergency lighting, and data communications. The building has a striking finish, created using a vinyl wrap with strong graphics that reflect and communicate UCL’s programme to transform its estate.

The new Portakabin building is sited in a complex location within an enclosed courtyard. This required detailed logistical planning from the Portakabin hire team and great precision for the installation phase with only centimetres to spare. One of the walls also had to be fire rated to 60 minutes due to the proximity to an adjacent brick building.

Modular buildings for short-term use can now be supplied with an even wider range of architectural options and amenities to enhance the environment for work and study. Developed and installed by Portakabin, the range is designed to give interim buildings a more permanent feel and includes:Canopies and shelters for under-utilised outdoor spacesCovered walkways with curved, high barrel, low barrel or flat roofsVinyl wraps, which are low maintenance and simple to install but can totally transform a building’s appearance with strong branding and graphicsFree-standing outdoor structuresCycle storageSmoking sheltersStreet furniture such as litter bins, benches, picnic tables, bollards and barriers.

Fire Safety, Smoke Control And Compliance - Charting A Path Through The Regulations

By Nelson Godinho – Fire Engineer with SE Controls. The legislative environment governing the smoke control and fire safety industry is, unsurprisingly, complex, far-reaching and absolutely vital to ensure that these systems not only operate faultlessly when they’re needed, but also provide effective safety protection and allow people to escape. Even so, you would probably be surprised by the number of construction companies that contact us after they have completed a block of apartments and find that Building Control has rejected the structure due to the omission of a smoke ventilation system, which is required by law for any residential building of 3 storeys and above. Clearly, there’s no suggestion that designers, specifiers and building companies are brazenly flouting the regulations, but it is apparent that the main issue is ignorance of the complex and essential regulatory framework that governs this sector. But, as is often quoted, “Ignorance is no defence.”

Navigating the maze - Building Regulations Approved Document B, The Machinery Directive and The Construction Product Regulations, via the various parts of the European EN12101 standard, provide a tight and far-reaching regulatory framework. Yet, this is only part of the story. The Smoke Control Association’s (SCA) ‘Guidance on Smoke Control to common escape routes in apartment buildings’ quickly became the default reference document for many designers, installers and approving authorities throughout the UK, when first published in 2012 and has since been updated with even more key information.

Alongside this, BS 9991:2015, which covers ‘Fire safety in the design, management and use of residential buildings - code of practice’ is also a vital reference when addressing fire safety specification and requirements. However, if your seeking a signpost to provide an effective route to achieving compliance, then, arguably, the best start point is the BS7346 – Part 8 Code of Practice. Prior to this, no single document existed that provided guidance for the industry from initial design, through installation to maintenance. The core benefit of BS7346-8 is that by adhering to its guidelines; designers, installers, commissioning engineers and maintenance teams can create, install and operate a fully compliant smoke control system. Clearly, providing any definitive guidance in the space available is impossible, but as the penalties for non-compliance are punitive and can involve imprisonment, it is always advisable to seek professional specialised input from organisations such as SE Controls, that work with the regulations on a daily basis. www.secontrols.com

New-Build Home Is First To Use Cutting-Edge Ecodan QUHZ

A new-build home in Leicestershire is demonstrating how anyone can achieve a highly efficient property that provides a warm, comfortable environment, using existing technologies and readily available building techniques. The spacious 3-bedroom, detached home has been built by Keyplan Developments Ltd to exceed current UK building standards, paying particular attention to high levels of insulation and air tightness.

With the space heating energy requirement being lower than the hot water energy requirement, any heating system installed has to be able to cope with hot water production as the dominant load. This is where the new Ecodan QUHZ 4kW air source heat pump is playing such an important role as it has been specifically designed with new-build standards of insulation and lower heating loads in mind. Mechanical heat recovery ventilation and PV systems are also installed, giving this 180m2 property a peak heat loss of just 3.8kW. The family sized home has 2 bathrooms and an en-suite meaning the hot water demand on certain occasions can be high.

The Ecodan QUHZ unit is MCS-Approved and straightforward to install, delivering water at 70°C to a packaged 200 litre thermal store. From this thermal store, mains water is heated directly up to 65°C via Mitsubishi Electric’s plate heat exchanger, meaning the Fox family receives hot water whenever they need it. The system uses CO2 as a refrigerant and ensures a large delta T between the flow and return temperatures to and from the outdoor unit. This delivers the high levels of efficiency that enable the Ecodan QUHZ to meet the high hot water, low heating requirements of the property. www.mitsubishielectric.co.uk

Mapei Products Specified For New Aston Martin ShowroomThe £4m, 1950m2, two floor, state of the art facility, which is located on The Silverlink, Newcastle, reflects the prestige and exclusivity of the Aston Martin brand and benefits from an extensive range of new and ‘timeless’ pre-owned Aston Martin models. The spectacular showroom opened in March 2016, unveiling for the first time in the UK, the DB11 model.

A range of Mapei products were specified to complete the 700m2 tiling project, installed by one of the leading ceramic tiling contractors P Plunkett Tiling contractors Ltd (www.plunketttiling.co.uk). Products specified include Mapei’s Eco Prim Grip which was used to prime the power floated concrete once cleaned. Mapetex, the anti-fracture de-coupling membrane for use under ceramic, porcelain and stone tiled floors, was later installed with Keraquick and Latex Plus over saw cut joints and cracks within the concrete.

In addition, Mapei’s Ultraplan Eco was used to achieve a perfectly smooth, flat and level surface in which to lay the stone tiles. Topcem which is ideal for the formation of screeds allowing traffic after 12 hours and ceramic tiles to be laid after 24 hours, was used to create ‘runners’ and ‘wells’ to pour the leveller into. Adesilex P4 was used as an adhesive screed to create a flat surface enabling the contractors to tile the external areas of the showroom, but whilst also creating a fall. Adesilex P4 is a high performance, rapid setting cementitious adhesive for ceramic and stone installations and also carries an EC1 rating.

Large, Travertine Navona tiles in a honed finish, were specified to tile the luxury car showroom floor, mezzanine and external display areas of the new development. To fix the large format, difficult to install tiles, Granirapid white was utilised, applied in a ‘back buttering’ method to ensure 100% adhesion to the pre-prepped substrate. For the grouting, Mapei’s Ultracolor Plus Grout in shade 132 (beige) were specified providing a high performance, quick setting and drying mortar. The Ultracolor Plus grouts also contain water-repellent technology, DropEffect and mould resistant technology, BioBlock.

Once the feature steel staircase was cleaned, Eporip was utilised blinded with sand, levelled with Adesilex P4 and the stone tiles were fixed with Granirapid in white.

Timber Building Is Foundation For School ExpansionA new-build housing estate brought rising roll numbers and an urgent need for more classroom space at a village primary school near Chippenham. Staff at Sutton Benger C of E Aided Primary School knew they needed a more permanent solution than that offered by mobile classrooms, but were also constrained by the design of the school building which left them with nowhere obvious to extend.

Leading joinery manufacturer Scotts of Thrapston was approached by the 162-pupil school to provide a new classroom. Traci Langford, finance officer at the school, said: “New housing in the village meant that we needed to provide an extra classroom to accommodate the increased pupil numbers.“The school building, while fairly modern, doesn’t lend itself to an extension, the position of corridors and access would make it very complicated. Equally, we wanted to provide a permanent building, so a mobile classroom was not an option. The Scotts building provided the answer.”

Scotts, who have been making and distributing timber products since 1920, first started creating education buildings in 2014 and like the rest of the company’s projects, Sutton Benger’s new classroom was constructed and ready for use in a matter of weeks. Work began before the end of the summer term and the classroom was ready for the Year Six class to move in to when they started in September.

As well as a bright teaching area complete with wet zone the new building has a cloakroom, two toilets including one with access for the disabled. Scotts offers a core range of education buildings but more often than not, provides bespoke solutions to meet its customers’ individual needs. Philip Goldstone, Scotts of Thrapston’s business development manager, explains how the company perfectly combines traditional craftsmanship with the latest technology.

He said: “Ultimately our education buildings are designed to make the best use of the space available and to provide optimum energy efficiency. We believe that the ideal learning environment begins with a building that inspires and motivates by its architectural form. To achieve their full potential, pupils need to feel comfortable in their environment and research has shown that acoustic conditions can have a profound impact on both children’s learning and staff performance. The feedback we have had from the pupils and the teachers who have used the new classroom is that they all enjoy their new environment.”

“The Scotts design service takes into account all elements of the building design including light, ventilation, thermal comfort and acoustics. The right amount of light, both artificial and natural, is crucial. We advise on door and window positions based on a building’s orientation – avoiding light from south facing walls which can result in uncomfortable solar gain in summer and western aspects which can lead to unpleasant glare on winter afternoons.” www.scottsofthrapston.co.uk

Kemper System Answers Towering Challenge In New York

Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid applied membrane has been used as the waterproofing system for the tallest building in the Western hemisphere: the 1,776ft One World Trade Centre in New York.Rising to 104 storeys and constructed in a $3.9 billion project lasting more than a decade, the One World Trade Centre, also known as the “Freedom Tower” is the centrepiece of the re-built World Trade Centre complex constructed on the site of ground zero. The 1800m2 roof is not only extremely high, but also features extensive exposed steel details and up to 400 penetrations, including the spire, with no area larger than 10ft x 10ft without some form of penetration; all of which had to be sealed effectively using a system that could be applied by a small team, with restricted access and without the use of hot works or heavy equipment.Kemper System’s

Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid-applied resin membrane was specified for the main roof and the louvre areas on lower floors. The penetrations, drains, curbs and perimeters were all protected and then overlapped by the membrane in the larger expanse to provide a seamless, durable and reinforced waterproofing membrane across the entire roof. As the cold-applied resin bonds directly to the substrate it is particularly effective in coping with wind-uplift which was a major consideration for the chosen system. In line with US Building Code requirements, the system was completed with a white reflective coating to reduce the urban heat island effect. Kemperol 2K-PUR resin system is 80 percent from renewable materials. www.kempersystem.co.uk

Levolux Keeps Researchers In Shade

The new BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) building, harnesses the latest building technology, including a custom solar shading and screening solution from Levolux. The building’s design harnesses natural resources, including light and heat from the sun, to create an energy efficient and highly sustainable development. Levolux was invited to develop a custom solution, utilising its Infiniti Fin system, Contour Ventilation Louvres and xL Screening Louvres. Deployed correctly, solar shading will allow heat gain to warm a building in the winter but then minimise excessive heat gain in the summer. This not only creates a comfortable environment for occupants throughout the year, but also helps to reduce a building’s energy consumption. For the MCRC, Levolux devised an arrangement of external aerofoil-shaped fins, based on its Infiniti Fin system.Aerofoil-shaped aluminium fins, each measuring 200mm wide, have been used extensively at the MCRC. All fins are fixed at an angle of 90 degrees to absorb and reflect the sun’s rays most effectively during the summer months. The openness of the fins helps to maximise daylight levels, while retaining good outward visibility for occupants. To aid ventilation, Levolux utilised its high performance Ventilation Louvres. The louvres are incorporated into sections extending up to 4 metres in height and 8 metres in width. The ‘S’ profile louvres are set at a pitch of 50mm, allowing excellent airflow with outstanding weather protection. For additional protection the louvres are backed with birdmesh. To complete the solution, Levolux’s xL Screening Louvres have been used to obscure the view of plant and equipment at roof level. ‘Z’ profile louvres, set at a pitch of 140mm, are inverted to form a louvred screen measuring almost 7.5 metres long by 3.4 metres high, with an integral louvred door. All aluminium fins, louvres and carrier arms are finished in a highly durable black grey powder coating, to complement the scheme. www.levolux.com

Future Energy Solutions Prescribes LED Lighting For Spire Healthcare’s National Distribution CentreFormed in 2007, Spire Healthcare has grown to become the second largest provider of private healthcare in the UK. Now with a network of 38 private hospitals, 12 clinics and two specialist centres for the treatment of cancer, the organisation undertakes a wide variety of activities and offers a full range of integrated surgical, medical and diagnostic services. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable operating practices are very important to the company, with energy conservation guidelines available on Spire’s intranet for all its hospitals to minimise the amount of electricity and gas consumed.

Nigel Sharp, National Engineering and Estates Manager at Spire Healthcare states, ‘As part of our ongoing process of improvement, we recognised the need to reduce our lighting related energy spend and also maintain good levels of illumination in our external car parking areas for the benefit of staff, patients and visitors. LED technology also provides us with Health and Safety benefits with the reduction of maintenance activities at height due to the longevity of the product. So, in 2014 we began an extensive programme of upgrading 1,400 luminaires to light emitting diode (LED) technology.’

FES won the original tender and since then has completed two phases of the project. In order to maximise return on investment on the designated capital expenditure budget, the first comprised 21 of the largest energy consuming sites, which achieved in excess of 73 per cent energy savings from a simple point-for-point replacement, while providing 25 per cent better light output. The second phase concentrated on 12 further sites and Marcus Brodin, Commercial Director at FES, comments, ‘We calculated that Spire Healthcare will save in excess of £700,000 over a 10-year period thanks to lower energy costs, reduced maintenance, environmental tax savings related to its inclusion in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, and additional resource savings. The effect on the environment will also be significant as carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will be reduced by 11,928lbs per annum, mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) will be lowered by 28lbs and sulphur dioxide (SO2) by 68lbs over the same period – this is the equivalent of four acres of forest being saved or two cars being removed from the road.’

The third phase has recently been completed and this focused on Spire Healthcare’s National Distribution Centre. Based in Droitwich, this 100,000ft² facility provides a platform to procure and supply goods and services to the

company on a daily basis through its internal logistics network. Commenting on the reasons for the change, Marcus Brodin says, ‘The importance of good quality lighting is often overlooked within warehousing and distribution based operations. This should not be the cas, as numerous studies have found that light has a profound effect on our physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Poor lighting can cause eyestrain, migraines and headaches, in addition to lethargy, irritability and poor concentration.’

There are no statutory workplace lighting levels in the UK and Regulation 8 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations simply requires that lighting at work is ‘suitable and sufficient’. However, the Health & Safety Executive’s (HSE) Lighting at Work booklet (HSG 38) sets out minimum recommended safe lighting levels and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers’ (CIBSE) offers guidelines regarding light levels required in correlation to workplace activities, stating that warehouses should have 150-200 Lux at floor level and 300 Lux in task areas.

As with the previous phases of the project, FES undertook a comprehensive a feasibility study to scope the objectives and to determine the optimal LED lighting solution for the offices, mezzanine and warehouse areas. It decided to replace 339 116W batten and 400W high bay luminaires with 59W LED battens and 178W high bay luminaires. These state-of-the-art products provide high efficacy of >110lm/W, low luminous decline, excellent colour rendering and unrivalled uniformity.

By incorporating zone based lighting sensors and daylight harvesting, this installation will achieve energy savings of over 75 per cent, with a 732kW saving per day, while providing improved light levels. Also, since the rated life of the new devices are well in excess of the previous luminaires, Spire Healthcare will make a 90 per cent saving on its ongoing maintenance spend. With a 10-year gross energy saving of £338,000, the environment will benefit, with over 1,200 tonnes of CO2 saved over the duration of the business case.

The new lighting infrastructure has been given unanimous approval by those working in the facility. For further information please contact Marcus Brodin on +44 (0) 207 908 3921 or [email protected] or visit www.feslighting.co.uk
