Windows, Doors, Framing

Taking all current specification and building regulation demands into consideration, The Parkside Group Limited are pleased to launch Alu-Timber, a range of aluminium/timber windows, doors and framing, that combines sustainably grown FSC or PEFC timbers with 100% recyclable aluminium.

“The Alu-Timber range of framing, windows and doors, merge material solutions: timber providing the thermal efficiency, aluminium the protection.”

Timber is a non-conductive material, minimising heat loss and, by using high performing glass, the lowest U-values are achievable. To protect, aluminium gives the timber facade a standard 25 year performance guarantee.

Alu-Timber gives the specifier benefits: low U-values to achieve current legislation as well as reassurance for the client that the facade will last, with minimal maintenance.

The Alu-Timber range includes casement, tilt and turn windows and an open-in and open-out door. Due to the superior jointing of Alu-Timber, it has inherently high deflection loads. Alu-Timber can therefore be used as a window walling suite up to storey height, creating modular framing systems with opening windows and doors.

Alu-Timber is a member of The Parkside Group Limited which includes Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, Axim and is a distributor for Duco sun and ventilation products. The Parkside Group Limited offers a single source solution for all your facade requirements.

Architecture Students Envision New Settlement In Firth Of Forth

A group of final year students from Robert Gordon University’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment in Aberdeen exhibited their cutting-edge vision for a new residential settlement in the Firth of Forth. The Master of Architecture students, led by Visiting Professor Alan Dunlop, were charged with exploring the idea of a new settlement for Edinburgh as their final year project. They came up with the concept of building a visionary new island – Cramond Island - in the Firth of Forth which would accommodate a new way of living, promoting community and bringing residents into contact with their natural environment. Fundamental to the design was the drive to create an ‘extraordinary place to live and work’. The design team were motivated by 5 principles which underpinned the whole project.

Models Of Tate Modern And Neo Bankside Made Entirely From Sugar Cubes!

The models were unveiled yesterday at the NEO Bankside pavilion, opposite Tate Modern, as the new development’s contribution to the London Festival of Architecture. Made to a scale of 1:100, the sculptor, Brendan Jamison, from Belfast, put the finishing touches to the installation which can be seen in the NEO Bankside Pavilion, Hopton Street, Bankside, London SE1. The sculptures was shown to the public over the weekend of 3rd-4th as a highlight of the Bankside Weekend of the London Festival of Architecture. The chimney of the model of Tate Modern is over 1 metre high and over 80,000 sugar cubes were used to create the entire installation. On Saturday 3rd July, children attended workshops at the NEO Bankside Pavilion to learn how to make sugar cube models, under Brendan’s tuition.

Reflective Room At The Manchester Museum

Reflective Room is a temporary structure located in the Courtyard at the Manchester Museum. It was selected as the winning design from the Prototype unit in a competition that invited 5th Year students from the Manchester School of Architecture to design an environment to align with the summer events programme. The Design Team intended Reflective Room as both a physical and contemplative experience. The Courtyard is revealed in a less direct way and is presented to the observer as an abstraction of the surroundings. Materials and weather are made apparent through subtle reflections, reducing the large scale to a more accessible human dimension. The structure forms a ‘public room’ where people can sit, relax and reflect. The aim is to utilise the ordinary to create the sublime. The Reflective Room was fabricated in the Art and Design Workshops at MMU and assembled by all students involved in the project.

Blood Railway Carries Off First Foster + Partners Prize For Sustainability And Infrastructure

Plans to connect inner London hospitals via underground ‘medi rail’ network centred on a major blood bank and medical transport hub have won the inaugural Foster + Partners Prize, presented to the Architecture Association School’s Diploma student whose portfolio best addresses the themes of sustainability and infrastructure. The new award, created this year, will be presented annually. The winner for this year’s prize is Aimee O’Carroll, 24 years old. Her work Whitechapel Urban Artery was selected jointly by Foster + Partners and the Architecture Association. Her work will go on show in Foster + Partners’ studio in September, when a formal reception will be held. Aimee’s project explored the masterplan for Whitechapel being put together for Crossrail, the reopening of the East London Line, the reuse of ‘Mail Rail’, the London rail line once used by Royal Mail and the Royal London Hospital expansion – soon to become the largest hospital in the UK.

Gensler Unveils Design For Museum Of Bond Vehicles And EspionageInternational architecture, design and planning firm Gensler today, unveiled its design for the Museum of Bond Vehicles and Espionage, which is slated to open in Momence, IL, in 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the first James Bond movie, Dr. No. The 14,000 square foot museum will house the exclusive collection of the Ian Fleming Foundation, including the world’s largest collection of vehicles used in Bond films. A partnership between the Ian Fleming Foundation, the Kankakee County Museum and

the City of Momence, this Gensler-designed museum will also feature cultural artefacts of espionage with exhibits exploring contemporary culture’s impact on the Bond films as well as Bond’s influence on popular culture. With projections of 20,000 visitors per year, the museum hopes to revitalize Momence, Illinois, a historic border town located 50 miles south of Chicago.

The project itself is a bit of a double agent, says Gensler Design Director Brian Vitale. “At face value, we’ve designed a showcase for a world-class collection of James Bond vehicles and the culture that surrounds them. But its real mission is to become a powerful catalyst for the revitalisation of a once-vibrant city”. With a limited budget, Gensler focused on a single bold design move to make a statement against a simple backdrop. The result is the 007 window (named so because the window’s angled jamb resembles a 7), located at the building’s prominent corner. The

window does quadruple-duty, providing exhibit display space, signage, a day lit interior, and an iconic backdrop for photographs. The remainder of the building is clad in black horizontal corrugated metal. It’s a mysterious silhouette that reveals very little of the museum’s content, much like James Bond himself, said Vitale.

Shell Lace Structure

Three interlinked events programmed during the London Festival of Architecture 2010 explored and demonstrated Shell Lace Structure, a structural technique pioneered in the past year by Tonkin Liu in conjunction with Arup. “Shell Lace Structure seeks to develop intelligent forms which respond to multiple design and construction parameters. The result is a new breed of single surface structure.” Ed Clark, Arup.

A new structural technique launched at London Festival of Architecture 2010

The structural and fabrication technique combines digital modelling, digital analysis, with cost-effective laser-cutting fabrication, transforming flat sheet materials into lightweight self-supporting structures. Iterative analysis produces highly efficient structures that respond to the environment and minimize weight and wastage.Shell Lace Structures are optimized through curvature, corrugations, and perforations. The technique is informed and inspired by nature; Sea Shells gain strength from curvilinear geometry, growing in thin layers over time, only where they need to. As flamboyant and daring as Gothic vaults, which rely upon mass for their compressive strength, shells nevertheless demonstrate optimum structural principles. Lessons from tailoring demonstrate how pattern cutting thin flat sheet material can create stiff threedimensional form. Curvatures, together with corrugations, lock in the stiffness. Perforations minimize weight by removing material where the structure does

not require strength, bringing the delight of visual connection and refinement of scale and lightness. Three projects during the London Festival of Architecture 2010 publicly launched Shell Lace Structure. These events were the culmination of ongoing collaborative research implemented by Tonkin Liu and Arup. The concept has been explored through competition proposals for pavilions and bridges and a series of international workshops, which culminated in London in June. The three projects include a tailor-made architecture installation, which profiles the new technique, an exhibition which communicates the research to date and a workshop to further develop experimentation.

Buschow Henley Renamed Henley Halebrown Rorrison

London based architectural practice Buschow Henley will become Henley Halebrown Rorrison, effective from 7th June.

The new practice name acknowledges the long-term involvement of directors Simon Henley, Gavin Hale-Brown and Ken Rorrison and coincides with the resignation of Ralph Buschow.

The practice was founded in 1995 and has established itself as an award-winning architectural studio with expertise in contextual new development and adaptive reuse. Recognising that buildings form the foundations of society the partners have always strived to make enduring architecture that supports the community it serves and has a human, ethical and cultural dimension.

Simon, Gavin and Ken have been working together since 1995 and as co-directors since 1997. Their approach is informed by teaching,

writing and research. Simon and Ken are also members of design review panels for CABE, the NHS and local authorities.

In the last 13 years the practice has consistently won work in all sectors, gaining industry recognition in the early years as a shortlisted practice for the Young Architect of the Year Awards and later with a portfolio of built work as Building Design Healthcare Architect of the Year 2008. Projects have been exhibited at the Royal Institute of British Architects and the V&A, London and the Van Alen Institute, New York.

Looking forward to the year ahead, in 2010 Henley Halebrown Rorrison will complete the following projects: Waldron Square, Lewisham, South London, the latest phase of the area masterplan for Waldron health centre; Baldry Gardens Health Centre, a £3 million new-build development for a GP practice in Streatham,

South London; the landscaping of Buckland Court, Shoreditch to promote health and horticulture within the estate.

Projects at planning stage include: Kingsland Basin, a speculative 4,500 sqm mixed use development overlooking Regents Canal in Hackney; 336 Brixton Road, 2008 RIBA competition winning scheme for the refurbishment of a Brutalist building into a conference centre and workspace for disabled charities, community and church groups; Bagby Airfield & Hotel, 2007 RIBA competition winning scheme which employs a rammed earth superstructure of material excavated from the site to provide a building with high thermal mass and low embodied energy.

Projects in development include: a 300 sqm new-build private house in Barnes; the conservation of a Grade I listed Robert Adam house in Mayfair; a development of seven Passivhaus dwellings on a backland site in North London for a co-housing group seeking

to live communally and sustainably; a modern picture house in West London; and Hyland House School in Waltham Forest. The practice is also implementing its 2008 Roehampton University Masterplan with improvements to the campus public realm.

Simon Henley said: “Making architecture which meets the long-term aspirations of our society is now more important than ever. We have to look beyond accepted convention. We have always believed it is vitally important that our buildings transcend function and that designs have character and, in time, engender fondness in those who use them and so achieving a certain durability and an inherent sustainability. It is this ambition that drives Henley Halebrown Rorrison”.

Heavy duty operators are suitable for applications where doors are exposed to wind or other adverse weather conditions and low energy operators are suitable for automating internal doors.

Automatic doors, if designed and working properly, provide an excellent solution and can contribute significantly towards helping to reduce energy consumption or heat loss, improve user friendliness and provide unimpeded contact-free access bringing comfort and convenience to everyday life. They also satisfy appropriate legislation i.e. DDA, Building Regulations (Part M and B), Health & Safety at Work Act:1974, BS7036:1996, BS 7273-4:2007 and BS8300.

[w] www.kabadoorsystems.co.uk

Access control, building sustainability, hygiene and increasing requirements for the safety of people are a top concern for most Specifiers, Facilities Managers and Estates Management. Administrators struggle with maintaining a balance between having a user-friendly, welcoming building and a facility which is safe and secure. Well planned access solutions can ensure that the large amounts of people using these buildings can do so securely, safely and with ease.

Doors throughout the world allow millions of staff, customers, children, patients and visitors to pass through every year. The variety of their needs and the requirement for security, user-friendliness, durability and in recent times hygiene are probably the most important factors in the choice of access systems.

Traditionally, manual doors have been the norm in most buildings, which may be initially very cost effective, but due to their nature can be left open resulting in increased energy loss and can also pose a security risk. Many users, children, the elderly, disabled and even

people with push chairs or carrying bags experience problems with manual doors due to the physical effort required to open them. This situation is often made worse by the use of heavy manual door closers or poor access. Automatic doors offer huge benefits such as safe contact-free access and uninterrupted passage, together with the added benefit of security. Probably the greatest single benefit of automatic doors is the ability to offer easy access for everyone. They can also aid climate control and the energy efficiency of the building.

Automatic doors are usually sliding, curved sliding, swinging or folding. Sliding doors are extremely reliable for the high traffic flows experienced in many establishments and maximize the available entrance width facilitating easy access. Operation is not compromised by adverse weather and they offer virtually unlimited design possibilities and adjustable opening to aid climate control. Automatic doors can also provide virtually bacteria-free access

to toilets and kitchens. Modern toilet facilities now feature sensor controlled flush, taps and driers, it makes sense to extend this contact-less environment to the doors. Folding doors are ideal for locations where space is restricted, for refurbishment or retro-fitting into existing buildings or where sliding doors are not appropriate, they also maximize available entrance widths and are perfect for installation in corridors. Using folding doors in these areas gives the added benefit of reducing the amount of noise carried through the building.

If sliding or folding doors are not appropriate, manual swing doors can be fitted with operators very cost effectively to provide improved efficiency and controlled access and can ensure smooth, low noise operation with excellent directional traffic flow.

Beyond The Humble Flat RectangleWith a wide variety of innovative fixing systems for glass now available ‘off-the-shelf ’, architects and facade designers can make a stunning statement and follow the most imaginative architectural styles with their entrance door canopies. Neil Ackroyd of hardware manufacturer SFS intec provides an insight into some of the possibilities now open to designers.

With its clean sightlines, endless visual possibilities, longevity and ability to maximise natural daylight within buildings, structural glazing is an extremely popular feature in today’s architecture.

The creativity that makes glass such a popular material can now be extended to canopies due to the development over the last few years of precision-engineered fixing products which can be configured to offer new canopy styles with total structural integrity without the need for costly bespoke solutions.

Canopies, it’s worth remembering, are not an aesthetic nicety but an important requirement. Approved Document M of the Building Regulation which relates to ‘access and use of buildings’ identifies that “weather protection is provided at manual non-powered entrance doors”. This is to ensure that weather protection is provided to building users who have limited mobility as a result of a disability for example, and accessibility may be more of a challenge.Approved Document M also points out the need to ensure that any supports for an overhead canopy should be unobtrusive and avoid presenting a hazard. So, access legislation states that canopies should be used to cover

entrances for shelter purposes but that they shouldn’t get in the way.

But being a legislative requirement to fulfil a set function needn’t mean an unattractive building feature or limit creativity.

Curves in all the right places

Stainless steel tie-rods and articulated fixings can be configured to achieve some intriguing canopy styles. These can be curved to allow rainwater run-off at the sides or feature curved glass panels to achieve a shape which matches other features of the building elevation.

One typical approach to glass canopy attachment is to secure glass panes directly to a structural steel framework using point fixings. Whilst a structural steelwork frame can provide an excellent aesthetic result, using a system like SFS intec’s which combines point fixings with tie rods and special wall plate brackets offers a very different aesthetic outcome. Another important advantage with these tie rod systems is the simplicity of installation, which may only require four wall plate brackets.

SFS intec’s single point fixings are stainless steel engineered to offer excellent strength characteristics, resistance to corrosion and long term visual appeal. Typically the glass is secured safely using an appropriate specification bolt which fixes through the glass,

EPDM washer and stainless steel spacer. This ensures the glass pane becomes a structural element without it being subjected to forces that it is unable to cope with.

Standard fixing options help shape the style

Where a curved glass canopy is required, rather than flat glass with curved edges, the radius of the canopy will impact on how effectively the point fixings will secure to the glass panels. Point fixings have a flat fixing face so the curvature of the glass is securely accommodated using a 2mm EPDM washer. But there are limitations so it is important to know what minimum radius can be achieved without going to down the expensive route of bespoke fixings.

SFS intec offers a straightforward specification system by providing a canopy attachment system which is packaged to suit small, medium or large canopies. The diagram below illustrates:

This shows how large curved canopies can still be attached using standard point fixings which are capable of safely fixing the glass providing the curve becomes less severe as size increases. Various types of building construction will support the wall brackets including standard brick and block and aluminium curtain walling which means glass canopies can be an attractive retro-fit feature in refurbishment projects.

Spiders add another dimension

Combining single point fixings with spider fixings opens up all sorts of aesthetic possibilities for glass canopies. The spider fixing allows a single tie rod to hold more than one glass pane and cleans up the look of the building with less clutter (reduced tie bars).

Cast Stone PopularityCast stone has been a familiar and much-used alternative to natural stone since Georgian times. Andy Cotton, chair of UKCSA explains why.

Cast stone has caught the imagination of architects and their clients from the classical past in Britain to the present day. There’s a simple reason why. Cast stone evokes a sense of timelessness which fits in with any form of massive construction. It’s ideal for any architectural purpose that calls for fine detail around entrances, openings and gables at an affordable price. It stands alongside expensive carved stone in appearance and performance yet it normally costs significantly less.

Yet in many ways it’s far better. It can beat natural stone on strength, moisture penetration, colour and textural consistency. Stratification is never a problem and it’s free from imperfections. Although critics of cast stone have argued that it never weathers like natural stone, the fact is that it can and does.

So what is cast stone? It’s a special form of simulated stone, synonymous with reconstructed stone. The UK Cast Stone Association (UKCSA) defines it as any product made with natural aggregates and cementitious binder that is intended to resemble and be used in a similar way to natural stone.

Despite its composition, it would be a mistake to think that cast stone has much to do with mass-produced concrete. It’s the difference between rough carpentry and a Thomas Chippendale.

For designers concerned with truth to materials, there is another thing which today distinguishes cast stone. Often its colour is the result of choosing an aggregate with the appropriate inherent colour. So the final product can mirror the way natural stones are coloured.

Cast stone detailing is regularly used on sensitive conservation and refurbishment projects from domestic housing to cathedrals. It’s suitable for period and contemporary styles, stone and reconstituted stone buildings, to enhance brickwork or render, and for garden ornaments. Since at least the eighteenth century, cast stone has been used for mouldings, columns and their entablatures, cornices, statuary, obelisks, steps, balustrading and keystones. In

housing, cast stone details such as string courses, window heads and cills, porticos and quoins are a tried and tested solution. Many manufacturers have built up big ‘libraries’ of moulds of standard details, so designers seldom have to reinvent the wheel to get the look they want. And since these are based on centuries-tested stone details, they work first time.

Cast stone can also take the form of ashlar masonry. These days, natural stone is too expensive for solid masonry but it’s simple and economical to use cast stone ashlar blocks – which not only satisfy the

truth to construction architectural argument but will perform in terms of bearing strength and weather in the same way as natural stone.

As with any building material, it’s important you can trust the manufacturer. Issues over consistency in cast stone manufacturing have prompted UKCSA to produce a new generic specification for the material, downloadable from its website. When it comes to cast stone, UKCSA is the guardian of quality. The association sets high performance standards and members must go through a strict vetting procedure. Their levels of quality-controlled

manufacture ensure the strongest cast stone available. Details are available from UKCSA’s website, together with technical downloads and a list of members, Britain’s leading producers of cast stone: Bradstone, Broadmead Renaissance Cast Stone, Forticrete, Haddonstone, PD Edenhall, Plean Precast, Procter Cast Stone and Woodside Cast Stone.

The Changing Face Of Roof WindowsBy Phil Adams – Sales Director, Fakro GB Ltd

Feedback from self-builders following completion of a loft conversion confirms frequent regret that more research was not undertaken into roof window choice. The extent and increasing pace of product development over the past 5 years has seen the introduction of designs of increasing sophistication. They have undoubtedly changed the face of warm roof construction and as more home owners look to improve rather than move, the role of roof windows is taking on increasing importance.

Design changes have affected traditional as well as new products and the centre pivot window used by so many of us is the best example. Some changes are not immediately evident, but there is no doubt that the gap in performance between manufacturers is getting far wider.

Changes have been influenced by a number of factors. Style and sustainability undeniably remain the most significant, but others such as security are becoming increasingly

important. Building Regulations continue to demand higher standards of thermal and acoustic efficiency,

while the Code for Sustainable Homes has drawn greater attention to CO2 reduction and heat retention, by far the biggest contributor to its 9 methods of assessment.

Some of the most significant improvements pass largely unnoticed on first inspection, and security is a good example. Though little noticed by the general public, a European Standard EN13049 has, for some time, provided a clear definition of roof window safety and security. The threat of burglary via roof windows might outwardly appear to be imperceptible but, by defining five classes of performance in relation to a 50kg weight impacting on a window, product comparison can now be made.

All Fakro roof windows, including the Centre Pivot, achieve a minimum level of Class 3, though other manufacturers achieve no higher than Class 1. Distributor Gallery Loft Conversions of Cardiff changed their regular roof window supplier when told that the standard of security they required could not be provided in a standard product.

Their Sales Director Gareth Edwards commented, “Fakro’s topSafe® system combines additional steel reinforcement in the lower part of the sash with improved lock security to prevent hinges being ruptured. When they see how the windows perform, a high proportion of buyers are influenced by the added security provided”. TopSafe is not used by any other roof window manufacturer and to put Class 3 into perspective, windows achieving it will invariably withstand the weight of an individual.

Developments in thermal efficiency and ventilation have also widened the performance gap between manufacturers. Triple glazed windows may be supplied without vents where CSH Level 6 construction is involved but generally, a manually operated vent has always been a feature of standard roof windows.

This changed when Fakro introduced an automatic vent activated by variation in atmospheric pressure as standard. This greatly reduces the heat loss associated with static ventilation, and ensures that the right balance is achieved (up to 48m³/hr) between room temperature

and provision of fresh air. The vent design also ensures that warm air avoids cold elements in the frame, reducing susceptibility to thermal bridging and condensation.

In terms of style, positioning the operating handle in the base of the frame enabled designs to take on a far sleeker appearance. This has been taken a stage further with products such as the High Pivot and Balcony roof window which, by enabling far larger glazing areas to be provided, have broken new ground. The Fakro FYP-V U3 pro-Sky® window is similar in construction to a centre pivot one but has its axis of rotation in the

top third of the frame. With a height of up to 200cm and raised pivot point, the lower part of the sash effectively functions as a top hung window. The added height provides a larger glazing area without the need to increase width or use vertical combinations. The FDY-V U3 Duet pro-Sky window works on the same principle but with two sashes in a single frame. The lower element is non-opening with laminated internal glazing and increases the height to a maximum of 250cm.

Whatever is purchased, the great majority of home owners will use the centre pivot as their benchmark. Even

here, however, technology has produced a product which has extended the way in which such windows can be used. The FPP preSelect® enables opening operation to be changed from centre pivot to top hung at the flick of a switch in the frame. Added value can accommodate pretty much any budget.

Ancon TeploTie Used In British PassivhausAncon TeploTie, the low thermal conductivity wall tie manufactured from basalt fibres, has been used in the first certified Passivhaus to be built using traditional masonry cavity walls.

Passivhaus is a globally recognised Standard for the construction of low energy buildings which provide excellent levels of comfort in both winter and summer. The first Passivhaus was built in Germany in 1991, however not until 2010 in Denby Dale in West Yorkshire has this Standard been adapted to British building methods.

Achieving the energy efficiency levels of Passivhaus relies on the construction of a well-insulated airtight building envelope. Thermal bridges must be removed wherever possible to limit heat loss. When building with cavity walls, this makes Wall Tie selection particularly important.

Bill Butcher of Green Building Company said, “Our choice of Wall Tie has been carefully modelled in Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) - the design tool for architects designing to the Passivhaus standard. The use of basalt wall ties gives a nil reading for heat transference”.

TeploTie wall ties are exclusive to Ancon. They have a thermal conductivity of just 0.7W/mK, making them the most thermally efficient Wall Tie on the market. They are available in various lengths to suit even the most super-insulated cavities, essentially future-proofing masonry construction with which all clients, contractors and designers are familiar.

The masonry walls on this Passivhaus development comprise an inner leaf of dense concrete block, a 300mm cavity filled with fibreglass insulation batts and a natural stone external leaf. Bill Butcher said of the achievement, “The Denby Dale Passivhaus proves that it is possible to build an ultra low energy house using standard British building materials and techniques, at a low cost.”

The build cost of this 118sqm house was just £141,000. It should require minimal heating with costs of around £75 per year.

For information on Ancon’s full range of low thermal conductivity wall ties, visit www.ancon.co.uk/LowConductor or call 0114 275 5224.

FLOTEX EVOLVES.......and takes flocked flooring to a new dimension

Combining the properties of both textile and resilient flooring Flotex has always been in a league of its own but these latest aesthetic enhancements make the innovative high performance floor covering a practical and design minded choice for a wider range of projects than ever before. Flotex has been the focus of a design collaboration with Ettore Sottsass which resulted in a series of refreshingly unique, stylish and audacious design concepts. Building upon these impressive credentials Forbo’s international design team has created new sheet designs that include large pattern repeats and vivid colours for maximum impact.

Over 58 new colourways and a new ‘Spin’ range with vivid colours and lively circle design have been introduced to the Flotex HD (high definition) collection, which features designs with superior ‘textured’ aesthetics and a three-dimensional appearance. Four other stocked Flotex HD designs – Pulse, Cord, Vector and Field - all form large endless pattern repeats with rich, vibrant colours, making the range stylish and completely on trend for contemporary commercial interiors. An additional eight designs can be manufactured to order.

The Flotex Classic collection, characterised by more subtle colour nuances and a practical, geometric look, has been enhanced with 40 additional colours and a new design range. Calgary is a soft natural design offered in a wide colour choice, perfect for large open spaces requiring a muted ambience.“Flotex really has evolved,” says Julie Dempster, Marketing Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems. “The vivid and vibrant design capabilities of Flotex HD and our inspirational Sottsass designs have changed the product offer beyond all recognition. Its unrivalled performance proposition and enhanced design potential means Flotex stands out in a class of its own – a completely distinctive flooring solution.”

Thanks to its unique composition of millions of densely packed electrostatically flocked nylon fibres firmly anchored into a vinyl base layer, Flotex combines the hard wearing and washable characteristics of a resilient floor with the warmth, comfort and acoustic properties of carpet. The construction has earned Flotex BAF certification because of the way allergens are trapped and released safely through vacuuming to create a more comfortable environment. In addition, the highly effective anti-microbial treatment Sanitized® means Flotex offers constant protection against bacteria including MSRA and E-coli. All Flotex floor coverings have BRE global accreditation.

Forbo’s integrated approach to the development of its new sheet collection means that Flotex can be coordinated with designs from the manufacturers’ linoleum, vinyl, entrance flooring and carpet tile collections, enabling the creation of truly integrated flooring design concepts.

The entire Flotex collection can be viewed at Forbo’s London Showroom in Clerkenwell EC1, along with other design-led products in Forbo’s integrated portfolio.

NEW Stannah Midilift XLplus Powers Health And Wellbeing At High Wycombe Surgery

Hot off the production line, in demand and straight into service, Stannah Lifts’ latest addition to its range of vertical platform lifts, the Midilift XLplus, is helping to deliver an all-time high in health and wellbeing at Carrington House Surgery in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Located close to the town centre, this modern, purpose-built NHS medical practice has provided an invaluable health service to the local community for over twelve years. But, in response to Government directives requiring more services to be offered in the primary care sector, the surgery is expanding. Once housing their administration offices, the first floor is being converted into consulting rooms, thereby necessitating lift access for people with restricted mobility, from pushchair-pushers to wheelchair-users.

Centrally located in the premises, the lift features clear glass panels to three sides with two half-height mirrors to the right-hand side wall, ranged either side of the control panel. Enclosed in a glass shaft, it offers scenic and convenient travel between the spacious, ground-floor reception area and the first-floor consulting rooms. Harmonising with the clean, neutral décor, the lift offers an impressive, high-tech facility wholly in keeping with its surroundings.

Since handover of the Midilift XLplus in April 2010, Carrington House Surgery is poised to deliver care at even healthier heights. By streamlining the movement of all mobility compromised individuals between the two floors, the lift also helps the practice owners meet DDA requirements.

The new dynasty Midilift XLplus benefits everyone involved. Supplied in a structure-supported enclosure for swift, adaptable, cost-effective installation, it is the ideal solution for buildings where it is not necessary, practical or possible to install a conventional passenger lift.

Lift users and budget-conscious, space-strapped owners appreciate the advanced range of ergonomic features such as automatic push-button controls for ease of operation; a partially enclosed car for an enhanced sense of safety; two car styles for a greater choice of finishes, and a new traction drive system for a smooth, quiet ride with an increased travel to 12m for loads up to 400kg.

Carrington House Surgery Practice Manager, Helen Morris-Khan, enthuses: “Stairs may be great exercise but, for various reasons, not everyone – staff included – can always use them, so the provision of the Midilift XLplus means we offer an even better health service and working environment to everyone who sets foot inside the surgery. It is totally in keeping with our contemporary, dedicated facility and it is hard to imagine the working day without its assistance.”

Tanalised Timber Cladding Provides The Feel Of Woodland At Dutch School

The curving walls of the school have been clad in Siberian Larch, treated by Foreco Dalfsen with Tanalith E preservative with a water repellent additive, that will not only ensure a long service life for the timbers but will also help maintain its dimensional stability and attractive appearance.

Each of the three ‘logs’ house a cluster of classrooms and functional rooms and open onto a central space. The floorplan represents the leaves of the trees and inside the floors have been finished in 6 different autumn colors to re-enforce the tie to nature.

The idea of open space is translated into the central area at the heart of the building. The classroom groups have the rounded shapes of trees and these contrast with the gym, which has the shape of a rectangular steel protective box.

The “trees” are surrounded by a wooden facade with smooth rounded corners and a high roofline. Around the school are lawns and playgrounds for the youngest children and at the front of the playground is a climbing structure which completes the project. In the playground children can climb, play football, table tennis, chess or enjoy sitting on a couch.

The overall feel is one of a natural meeting place for the school and neighborhood. Spring Architecten of Rotterdam commented that: “This is great a way of using treated timber that not only preserves the wood, but also maintains its colour and appearance, something we felt was very important in this project. And, it is very affordable, which was important because we had to work within the limited budgets of the Municipality.”

s ENQUIRY CARD/ONLINE NO 8www.buildinginnovations.co.uk/card

The façade of St Theresa School in Bilthoven, Holland needed to be warm, recognisable and complement the lightly wooded landscape in which it is located. Therefore the choice for Tanalised E pressure treated timber cladding was made. As a combined primary school, child daycare and community centre, the rounded shapes of the building depict three logs with the treated cladding representing the bark. The school is located on the Biltse lake, a sandy area of deciduous trees and the design of the building and the cladding ensures that the building fits in with its forested surroundings.

Hambleside Danelaw Rooflights Specified For M&S’s Biggest Building

Hambleside Danelaw’s barrel vault rooflights have been installed on Marks and Spencer’s largest ever building. Commissioned as a ProLogis and CA Roofing Services project and currently being fitted out, the retailer’s new distribution centre in Bradford occupies 95,000m². The specification for the centre, which is scheduled to open later this year, required 4,500m of rooflights. As with all of the Hambleside Danelaw’s award-winning rooflight range, the rooflight assembly uses an insulating core to improve thermal efficiency. The rooflights will also offer the M&S staff very pleasant diffused natural lighting in which to work. Independent research from De Montfort University has shown that this has a positive impact on productivity as well as saving on energy costs. Vince Cranmer, Hambleside’s divisional director for rooflights and cladding, said: “Hambleside Danelaw is justifiably proud that our rooflights are on the largest building in the M&S property portfolio. Our award-winning range of GRP rooflights can offer U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K and they can be found on high-profile buildings such as the British Museum, the futuristic McLaren F1 headquarters and Gorilla Kingdom at London Zoo. It’s no wonder that they are being increasingly regarded as the environmental rooflight of choice.” This is not the first time that Hambleside Danelaw’s rooflights have been chosen as part of a prestigious ProLogis development. In 2008 they were installed as part of the ProLogis Pineham let to Sainsbury’s that won numerous national and international accolades for leading the way in green building technology. The market leading heat saving methods of construction, which included large GRP insulated rooflights, were estimated to reduce energy consumption by up to 40% compared to a standard warehouse.

VMZINC CPD – Zinc As A Building Envelope

As one of Europe’s market leaders in zinc roofing, cladding and rainwater systems, VMZINC’s CPD presentation ‘Zinc as a building envelope’ examines the metal’s use in construction today. It discusses the flexibility and durability of zinc as well as specific factors such as corrosion, ventilation, expansion/contraction, recycling and the environment.

As a non-ferrous metal, zinc is naturally self-protecting. If supplied in its natural finish, it gradually forms an attractive light grey patina which requires little or no maintenance. It offers durability, long-term cost-effectiveness and malleability and is therefore ideal for shaping and complex detailing.

Best Selling CT Pumps Get Even Better

Salamander have recently face-lifted the CT Range of regenerative pumps. In the updated CT50 models the most obvious change is the incorporation of a new more robust foot, which is integral to the pump motor, making it much more robust in transit than its predecessor. Gone also is the protrusion on the end of the shaft drive, leaving a pleasing, sleeker line. Leaving aesthetics aside, the updated pumps now all have isolating valves on the inlet couplers fitted as standard to make the servicing of the pump that much easier. There is also an improved switching system giving even better repeatability and reliability. The CT50 is also continuously rated, allowing the consumer to have longer showers should they wish, not cutting out after 20 or 30 minutes as do its competitors.

Sterk Systems – There’s Strength In The Name

Harold Sterk is following in a family tradition. In 1937 his grandfather Arie Sterk set up a decorating company and found an unusual solution to an early commission: he bought a ‘ladder wagon’ so that he could reapply the gold leaf to the church clock tower. The ladder wagon proved so successful that Arie was still using it 20 years later. In 2010 Harold Sterk’s family company proudly follows in his grandfather’s footsteps. Based in Buckinghamshire, Sterk Systems Limited has its own solution for working at height. The Triangular Bridge System is an innovative scaffolding system made of lightweight aluminium that is quickly and easily assembled, two people can erect the complete system in around 15 minutes. It is able to span awkward structures such as conservatories and provides easy access to long runs of upper-storey windows. The separate lengths of two, three and four metres provide multiple access solutions as they can be joined together to bridge larger areas. It is accredited with the official European safety regulations (EN 1004) and its use minimises the potential for accidents. The Triangular Bridge System also reduces inconvenience by allowing easy access to doors and windows behind the scaffolding.

UKCSA Expands Its Quality Membership

Procter Cast Stone has become the latest full member of the UK Cast Stone Association (UKCSA), the guardian of quality for cast stone and representing the leading manufacturers. A key difference between UKCSA members and other cast stone manufacturers is in the compressive strength of their products. The minimum standard required by UKCSA is at least 40% stronger than that demanded by the British Standard BS 1217. It’s backed by rigorously monitored quality assurance and testing. The UKCSA standard is the benchmark for cast stone quality and ensures the strongest cast stone available. The NHBC says that the starting point in specifying cast stone is to ensure that it’s produced to the relevant British Standard or, better still, to the higher standard adopted by UKCSA members.

New Coating Locks In Wood Extractives

Sikkens Joinery Coatings continues to lead the field in factory applied coating technology by developing a product to isolate wood extractives. Up until now hard woods and soft woods have caused problems for joinery manufacturers and painters alike, due to the wood extractives that bleed through the coating and discolour the paint surface. Now with the with the launch of Cetol WM675 and its unique patented Sikkens’ Ion-Lock Technology, new standards in wood coatings have been set, protecting opaque and translucent paint systems. Cetol WM675 is a colourless mid coat formulated with mobile ion groups that use electro-chemical processes to isolate discolouring wood extractives for subsequent coats of translucent and opaque coatings and prevent discolouration of the surface. The product neutralises discolorations effectively and sustainably, retaining the natural appearance of wood surfaces without using environmentally hazardous heavy metals like zinc compounds. Sikkens Ion-Lock-Technology works by taking advantage of opposite charge effects; most wood substances are negatively charged and the binder’s components in the coating have a positive charge. Extractives are drawn to the ion ends and thus bound and neutralised within the coating layer.

Wrightstyle Develops The Ultimate Unlatched Fire DoorIt’s the ultimate unlatched fire-resistant door system that architects and interior designers have wanted to specify for years.

The breakthrough fire door system from Wrightstyle now offers designers internationally a range of entirely new and fully-glazed interior or exterior door options. Glazed fire doors that offer complete practicality coupled with absolute fire safety.

Singles, Doubles, Rebated, Un-RebatedThe Wrightstyle unlatched doors, are available in single or double leaf

format, fully glazed, using non-selective door leaf push/pull technology, offering a wide range of surface finishes including stainless steel. The double leaf door system is available in either rebated or un-rebated options, meaning that there does not have to be an overlap between the doors, this allows each door to be opened separately and simultaneously from either direction, and is ideal for heavy

traffic thoroughfares and busy corridors.

Wide choice of accessoriesAdding further to the door aesthetics and practicality, options are available for the hinges and closer mechanisms, to be completely concealed within the framing system, offering a fully flush-faced door with no visible furniture. This entirely new concept in door fire safety significantly pushes the design envelope because, for the first time, it provides a technological solution for what has always been an interior design problem.

Unlatched Glazed Fire Door – Problem solvedUntil now, interior fire doors in their closed position had to be manually opened with a handle and latch, providing a less than optimal solution in a busy working environment. The Wrightstyle system entirely does away with the need for latches because, in normal use, whether in an office or busy educational or healthcare corridor, the doors allow free passage from both directions, swinging back automatically into the closed position, or if required can be fitted with an automated swing door operator.

However, in a fire situation, the unique Wrightstyle door system will automatically and securely close, providing a barrier against fire and toxic gases, fire-tested and certified up to 120 minutes, with a range of fire resistance options for both integrity only (E) or integrity and insulation (EI).

Complete design solution – high traffic areasThe door systems are available in a range of sizes, dependant on the fire resistant specification, an example being pairs of doors to E30 2300mm wide x 2500mm high unlatched. The doors can be supplied in kit form or fully fabricated for a complete design to installation service.

A perfect design solution for use in offices, hospitals, educational facilities, airports, or anywhere there is traffic density. The Wrightstyle door system can also be fitted with secure deadlocks, allowing them to be used as exterior doors.

Fire Rated Ductwork And Bs9999 Explained

The CPD Certification Service approved presentation, entitled ‘Fire Resistant Ductwork – why, where and how’, compiled by award winning fire-rated ductwork system manufacturer, Fire Protection Ltd (FPL), has been revamped and updated to incorporate changes from BS5588 (Part 9) to BS9999. BS 9999 is the Code of Practice for Fire Safety in the Design, Management and use of Buildings. The British Standard, which supersedes the majority of the BS5588 series of Codes of Practice, echoes the original Part 9. It aims to ensure that the design and construction of ductwork systems prevents them becoming the means by which fire, smoke and other products of combustion can spread from one compartment to another in a given time, or prejudice the safe use of escape routes. The code also makes reference to the importance of replacement, or make up air, when designing smoke extract systems. The ‘why’ element of the FPL presentation explains regulations and standards, the ‘where’ element describes systems and locations, whilst the ‘how’ section clarifies the types of fire resistant ductwork. The detailed presentation extensively illustrates the two main applications for fire rated ductwork, namely maintaining compartmentation without the use of fire dampers and systems active under fire conditions.

Innovairflex Addressable And Conventional Duct DetectorsAs close control air conditioning systems for computer and IT rooms and air conditioning systems for personal spaces become increasingly common throughout Europe, the risk of fire or smoke spreading through the duct systems they use to transfer the warm and cold air increases. System Sensor Europe has developed new detectors to provide specific fire protection for the square and circular air conditioning ducts that form part of such systems. The new range of InnovairFlex™ range Duct detectors consist of conventional and addressable versions. The addressable version uses the Series 200 Advanced optical detector and the conventional the Series 300 optical detector. Both ranges offer class-leading false alarm rejection through a combination of advanced hardware and software engineering. The unique air management design of the sensor cover allows the units to monitor ducts with air velocities ranging from 100 to 4000 ft/min without an increased false alarm risk. Both versions can be fitted with a module to control ancillary equipment; the module is mounted in the unit, saving the cost of an additional conduit box and extra wiring. Uniquely, the housing is made up of two interconnected sections that are hinged together, allowing them to be installed in rectangular or square configurations to suit the space available. To simplify installation, the air sampling tubes can be installed, replaced or removed from either the front or the rear of the unit with a large termination area giving plenty of room for cables. InnovairFlex has a very wide operating temperature and humidity range, allowing the units to be installed in aggressive environments such as machine rooms, roof voids and other spaces where the temperature and humidity excursions are likely to be extreme.

It’s Easy To Provide Advanced Energy Saving Heating ControlsFitting the latest energy efficient heating controls is a very easy and cost effective way to save energy and cut fuel bills – much more cost effective than replacing a boiler.

Householders are more likely to think about reducing electrical wastage than cutting fuel bills. Yet 85% of domestic energy is used for heating and hot water, compared with only 3% for lighting. Eighty percent of UK homes lack the minimum controls required by Building Regulations in new systems. Eight million do not even have a thermostat.

New heating controls featuring TPI (Time Proportional and Integral) advanced energy saving control provide more accurate temperature control than traditional controls and match boiler firing to demands from the heating system, so the boiler can operate much more efficiently. Tests by TACMA (The Association of Controls Manufacturers) show that under a single cycle steady state test, energy savings due to TPI control can be as much as 10% compared with other room thermostats.

Sundial RF² wireless controls packs from Honeywell feature TPI advanced energy saving control and make installation quick and easy, with no control cables to run or cable holes to drill, so no disruption during wiring and no damage to the décor.

Sundial RF² packs include a wireless enabled timer and a wireless thermostat which work together automatically, with no need to change the wiring to the rest of the system. In many cases the timer slots in place of the old unit and on the existing back plate.

Cold Control Phase Out R22 At Prestigious London Office DevelopmentCold Control, the award winning air conditioning and refrigeration specialists were recently awarded the contract to work alongside a major building contractor and a leading consultancy company on a large refurbishment contract at a prestigious London office development.

Cold Control was selected to replace the existing air conditioning within the second and third floor open plan office areas. This involved the isolation and removal of the current Mitsubishi R22 based VRF air conditioning systems and replacing them with the popular Mitsubishi R410A based VRF air conditioning systems. These refrigerants have zero ozone depleting potential and are proven to be more energy efficient than the R22 refrigerant.

Each open plan office area was heated and cooled by 40-perimeter floor standing chassis type fan coil units. These units were replaced and re-piped back to the roof where replacement condensing units were installed. Furthermore, each fan coil unit was provided with a controller and a centralised controller was fitted within each floor allowing for optimum ease of use and ultimate climate control.

Situated on the Shepherds Bush Road, the office development is in a highly active and built up area. Cold Control organised and co-ordinated a four-hour road closure to allow the roof condensers to be crane lifted into place, to ensure minimal disruption to residents and surrounding businesses. Cold Control were required to demonstrate this efficient working practice operating professionally to ensure business continuity for the occupants on the fourth floor of the building and to minimise disruption to the heavy London traffic along the very busy Shepherds Bush Road

Cold Control overcame the challenge of installing the riser pipe work to the roof plant area, through the occupied offices located on the fourth floor, within a restricted timescale and project managed the transition to ensure the integration of new systems and the safe disposal of the R22 refrigerant.

Cold Control completed the project working alongside the main contractor and electrical contractor, offering flexibility when required. Together the works were completed in the shortest possible time with minimum disruption, always prioritising the occupants needs and requirements.

With the R22 refrigerant gas phase out already underway and the various deadlines looming, it became a priority for companies, businesses, schools and office buildings to ensure that they were fully prepared and compliant in the last few months of 2009.

As of January 1st 2010, it became illegal to use virgin HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons). The most commonly used example for the maintenance and servicing of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment is R22. Recycled or reclaimed material is still legal and available but it is likely to become more expensive and scarce as 2015 approaches. Those who are not prepared in time will pay a premium price. By 1st January 2015- potentially earlier- a complete ban of all HCFCs including reclaimed/recycled products will be in place.

Therefore, for office buildings such as this, it was essential to take all precautionary measures to prevent and minimise leakage, and replace old units with new government complying systems. Employing fully qualified engineers from experienced and reliable companies like Cold Control has for most, made this transition safe and manageable.

Colin Harris, General Manager for Cold Control comments, ‘As a company we are up to date with the latest industry regulations and legislations. We are committed to ensuring all our customers understand the R22 phase out and how to accommodate for all industry conversions. Furthermore Cold Control are able to ensure the systems remain safe and industry compliant with our regular service and maintenance package’.

NIBE 2005 The Perfect Solution For Perton CottagePerton Cottage is a pleasant three-bedroomed cottage, nicely decorated and well insulated. Miss Christine Franklin who lives there had only one problem but that was a major one. The cottage was heated by a wet radiator system fed from a small and old-fashioned hot water tank and fuelled by LPG. With the escalation in fuel costs and an aging and rather inefficient system, their heating bills were over £5,000 a year.

Miss Franklin also found that one particular room could never reach a comfortable temperature and therefore, made very little use of the room. She called on Retherm, the Stoke-on-Trent based experts in renewable energy, asking them if it were possible to design a heating system that was substantially cheaper to run, ecologically sound and energy efficient.

After surveying the property, Retherm produced a system based on air-sourced energy channelled through a NIBE 2005 11kW unit, with the gained heat stored and circulated through an ultra efficient VVM300 hot water tank and electric boiler. Since the NIBE air/water heating equipment is designed to heat houses in the depths of Swedish winters with temperatures well below freezing for long periods, the milder

climate of the Midlands would cause no problems. The equipment was supplied by NIBE Energy Systems Ltd. of Chesterfield.

With part of the cost of the system offset by a Low Carbon Buildings Grant [also arranged by Retherm], Miss Franklin jumped at the chance of generating energy literally out of thin air and at a tiny fraction of the previous cost. The NIBE 2005 unit, slim and free standing, was duly installed near the rear wall.

The running cost for electricity, now the only cost in regards to supplying energy to the house, is averaging £.100 per month and very occasionally at times of real peak use, the house uses the thermostatically controlled immersion heater built into the new hot water tank.

Bigger Performance From A Smaller Exchanger

Alfa Laval has introduced he latest model in what it refers to as a new generation of brazed heat exchanger for HVAC and refrigeration duties that are smaller, lighter and yet more thermally efficient than their predecessors. The CB30 is light and more compact thanks to new production techniques and its higher thermal efficiency is complemented by its ability to accomodate a lower pressure drop which, in turn, reduces power consumption. The CB30 is ideal for heating and cooling duties in HVAC, refrigeration, industrial applications and for oil cooling and will work at flow rates of up to 14.53/h.In common with other models in the CB range, the CB30 consists of a number of corrugated stainless steel plates stacked on top of each other to form channels for the passage of two liquids, generally in full counter-current flow. End plates complete the plate pack which is then brazed at contact points to form a rugged and gasket-free exchanger offering high levels of thermal efficiency and excellent resistance to pressure and temperature.

NIBE Helps RHS Go Greener StillWe are used to associating ‘green fingers’ with the Royal Horticultural Society but the Society’s green ethic extends to areas far removed from flora and its propagation. The new Bramall Learning Centre at the RHS Garden Harlow Carr, Harrogate is expected to achieve one of the highest BREEAM ratings ever achieved by a bespoke building in the UK, making it absolutely as green as you can get.The innovative design of the Learning Centre includes virtually all established energy saving or conserving systems including triple glazing, a sedum roof, water harvesting, solar panels, a wind turbine and heat pipes. It even has that most sensible of facilities, the automatic opening of windows for ventilation when conditions make it advantageous! Also, essential for the water heating system, it has a NIBE F1330 22kW Heat Pump sourced from boreholes drilled in rock under the topsoil in the open area surrounding the new building.

The Learning Centre combines library facilities with training areas and lecture rooms, interactive covering a total of around 710 square metres on two floors in the 56 acre Garden. In addition to the not inconsiderable hot water requirements of the building for washing and cooking, both floors have under-floor heating, in a total of fourteen zones. This major energy requirement is met from the latent heat in the rock beneath the centre that maintains an almost constant temperature throughout the year. The heat from this is collected from five boreholes – three 100 metres and two 50 metres deep – and passed to the NIBE F1330 Heat Pump which by advanced heat exchange systems concentrates the energy. The heat generated is then passed via a NIBE UKV ‘surge’ vessel designed to maximise hot water capacity to a NIBE VPAS accumulator tank, just about the most efficiently insulated storage unit available. The system will work in partnership with other alternative energy sources in particular solar and, although energy efficiency testing is still under way, it is confidently expected to satisfy all the hot water needs of the building. It is entirely appropriate that a hot water heating system should be installed by HT Energy Ltd. of Swainby in Yorkshire since Managing Director, Howard Tribick, is the current runner-up of the fiercely contested NIBE Installer of the Year Award. Only the best is good enough for a project as innovative and energy efficient as the RHS Bramall Learning Centre.

73Environmental Control

Hackney’s ‘City Academy’ is a striking building using bold colours and an extensive facade of aluminium and glass in an acoustic twin facade design. In order to keep running costs of the building to a minimum and to ensure safety in the event of fire, a combined natural ventilation and smoke control system was designed and installed. SE Controls were specified on the project and supplied equipment to various sub-contractors which included the envelope glazing and roof system sub-contractors. Final installation and commissioning was undertaken by SE Controls’ own engineers.

Approximately 1054 actuators were supplied and fitted in various combinations to 538 vents. Vent configuration included both ‘top hung open out’ and ‘bottom hung open in’ casement windows. Various methods of actuation were specified depending on the location and ventilation requirement within each space.

To provide smoke free exit routes in case of fire, the circulation and communal spaces control panels work together with a control panel linked into the fire alarm system. For natural ventilation the 10 control panels are linked into the Building Management System (BMS) to offer comfort ventilation. When the fire alarm is reset, smoke vents will return to their previous positions and will be under control of the BMS again. The third floor roof accommodates 18 roof lights which are actuated locally to ensure a throughput of natural ventilation.

Kawneer Systems Make The Grade In Glasgow

Unitised curtain walling from Kawneer met a host of criteria for the Grade A office building that tops architects BDP’s £120 million masterplan for the heart of Glasgow’s international financial services district. The Kawneer unitised AA®201 system met at least a trio of BDP’s requirements – for programme issues as the use of scaffolding was negated, for low air permeability, and for meeting BDP’s design intent for a frameless, structurally silicone glazed (SSG) facade. The pre-glazed AA®201 unitised panels can be installed from within the building without the need for scaffolding, this method of installation not only reduced construction time and costs but also the safety risks associated with erecting and working from scaffolding. Steel framed with a slip-form concrete core and composite slab upper floors and roof, the building utilised Kawneer’s unitised curtain walling on levels one to nine and the glazing system was installed on the lower floors while the upper floor slabs were still under construction by main contractor Balfour Beatty. One of the first commercial offices subject to the new Section 6 requirements of the Scottish Building Standards (The English Part L2 equivalent), the building also uses Kawneer’s traditional stick-system AA®110 fully-capped and AA®110 structural silicone glazed curtain walling on the ground and tenth floors. While curtain walling is the dominant cladding to the building, the glazed elements interact with granite cladding and aluminium rainscreen. www.kawneer.co.uk

The Charter-Integr8 range of architecturally advanced shutters offers a magic combination of security and good looks.

When closed the shutters deliver the highest level of security and can be powder coated in any RAL colour to complement the building’s colour scheme.

However, because they can be housed within a structural lintel, when the shutters are open they have no impact at all – internally or externally – on the building’s appearance. The range also includes a retro-fit solution greatly extending its possible applications.

GEZE Makes History In HullGEZE UK has secured a place in Hull’s historical archives, by installing two circular entrances to the new History Centre’s unique curved atrium. Part of a £10.7m project, the Hull History Centre is a purpose-built facility designed to make historical archives accessible to the public and for the first time, priceless records of the city’s past have been gathered under one roof. With accessibility in mind, GEZE’s automatic curved sliders were chosen to create a stylish, minimalist and functional glass entrance that provides both impact and ease of use.At both ends of a linear glass arcade running along the south face of the building, four Slimdrive SC automatic operators were fitted in pairs to create two cylindrical draft lobbies, keeping heat loss to a minimum, while enabling easy ingress and egress for all members of the public.Part of the Slimdrive range, the operators are just 7cm high, creating a virtually

seamless effect, blending almost invisibly into the glass facades. The SC has also been designed and tested to meet the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including Building Bulletin 93, Approved Documents B and M, assisting with the vigorous demands of the DDA. GEZE UK’s team of engineers worked with the contractors on site to modify one entrance, which needed to incorporate a slope. This was achieved through alterations to the design of the sub-floor stainless steel rings and the door assembly.

Glazing Innovations Ltd, A Total Solution For Architectural Glazing...Having just completed an excellent trading year within architectural glazing, the team at Glazing Innovations Ltd are proud to report both increased sales and high levels of company development. The company was originally established as Bespoke Glazing Vision Ltd, a Vision Group (GB) Ltd subsidiary company in 2002 and was engineered to cater for the industry’s bespoke architectural glazing requirements. In May 2009 and due to group rebranding purposes, the company rebranded itself as Glazing Innovations Ltd, a Total Solution for Architectural Glazing continuing to provide its services to both the commercial and high end residential markets.

The last year has seen many great additions to the company, including the introduction of a modern client friendly website. Providing great trade specific technical information, product downloads and contract considerations. The company’s website has also developed an accurate online estimating package for all typical bespoke architectural requirements, including Skylights/Atriums, Balustrade, Canopies, Partitions, Facades, Conservatories and walk on Glass Floors. Glazing Innovations Ltd are also recent proud recipients of Business and Industry Today’s, Glass and Glazing Company of the Year award and look forward to many new achievements over the up and coming year.

Amongst this year’s development, the company has introduced the beginning of its modular product range. A structural glass balustrade system has been introduced and developed to provide a cost effective solution on a contemporary glass system. The system provides structurally clamped glass about the cill detailing, with no intermediate posts and in

some instances handrails. Secondly a modular structural glass canopy has been introduced. Capable of spans of up to 1,500mm and supplied with no interrupting framework (glass fittings and tie bars only), both systems provide an excellent view with less sightlines. All considered, these systems are specifically designed to aesthetically accommodate most applications.

The team primarily thrive to achieve the goals and targets laid out within the company’s mission statement and values (both available within the company website). Company director Ben Snell highlighted “I believe that it is our common goal, focus and communication that drives the team to provide an empathic bespoke design service to meet our client’s requirements and expectations. The company has a great fundamental understanding of architectural glazing design and architectural glazing developments, providing a professional service throughout a contracts progression. We have successfully managed many design and logistically challenging contracts. Including a recent bespoke rooflight containing a 4m x 2.4m glass unit weighing approximately 750 Kg’s and installed around restricted site access. By specifying our company’s systems and products, our clients have experienced understanding and knowledge above that of many comparable sales teams. With many people experiencing a service from architectural glazing suppliers, which at best is alright. Now would be an excellent opportunity to try something better! ”

Named among the top four of the world’s best tallest buildings in 2009, Broadcasting Place in Leeds has benefited from the specialist fenestration system designed and manufactured by Sapa Building Systems.

“We are very proud to have played a part in designing and supplying the unique window systems required in the architect’s design brief,” said Jon Palethorpe, Commercial Director of Sapa.

A mixed use development for Leeds Metropolitan University and property group Downing, some of the building’s diversity comes from the expression of the fenestration which encorporates integrated low-energy design. The result is a building with irregular sides which maximises natural light without creating overheating.

The design of the glazing system was chosen to complement the dramatic aesthetic of the corten steel panels, with the vertical, non-uniform fenestration patterns designed to evoke the idea of erosion within the monumental mass of steel volumes, capturing the essence of the rugged Yorkshire landscape.

“Sapa’s Dualframe Window Wall system allowed us to fully realize this apparently random window pattern,” said architect Simon Carter of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, London.

“We developed a series of standard modular windows, of either 500mm or 1000mm widths, which could then be arranged in different ways to achieve the undulating vertical strips of glass. Dark grey frames and grey back-painted spandrel panels were selected to further emphasise the contrast between solid steel and more transparent glass.”

For the majority of the lowest two levels of the building a SAPA silicon-glazed curtain walling system was specified, including a long-span system with two-storey integral steel mullions which form a dramatic enclosure to the Baptist Church which is housed in the building.

“Overall, the quality and detailing of the SAPA systems have helped to complement our vision for the architecture of the scheme,” said Simon Carter.

Commenting on the project, Sapa’s Jon Palethorpe said: “Dualframe Window Wall was used for all of the windows above the ground/first floor. These provided substantial cost savings and presented slimmer sightlines and lower U values than a curtain wall system which may have been the traditional solution.” Elegance 52 SX structurally clamped curtain wall was used for the more extensive areas of glazing to the lower two floors. It gives a flush external surface with no projecting caps or cover pieces in front of the glass line, retaining the glass mechanically with clamp profiles. Mechanically retaining the glass can often allow the use of bigger glass panes than alternative structurally glazed systems.”

Fabricator and installer for the project was North Cheshire Windows. “We were commissioned to value engineer, design and install an aluminium system to fulfil the requirements in the architect’s design brief,” said Managing Director Greg Heywood.

“We chose to work with Sapa because of their attention to detail and their excellent service and supply. I discussed the brief with the technical department at Sapa and we came up with what our sister company Cheshire Architectural Aluminium classes as a ‘unitized aluminium system’. It enabled us not only to meet the design criteria but also to help ensure the building was constructed within the time required.”

Creativ Colour With OsmoWith colour flooring fast becoming a new trend to wooden floors, Osmo has developed Creativ-flooring, a factory applied colour flooring solution. This idea is the perfect way to update an area without much hassle and cost involved. With fashions and personal tastes constantly changing, wooden furniture can often become out-of-date or appear in a bad condition. A burst of colour will help solve this problem and allows home-owners to add a personal touch to their wood. The ready-to-install, pre-finished flooring can be custom made for any size from 1m² and with the options sanded, brushed, aged or brushed and aged, the choice is endless. To create the best end result, apply the surface with the Osmo Wood Wax Finish range and then a top coat of Osmo Hardwax-Oil. This can be applied in either matt or satin-matt to create specific finishes. This provides a high level of elasticity, which protects the wooden flooring and increased resistance to day-to-day battering. It is amazing how a little bit of colour can transform a room – adding a light shade will add brightness to a small dark room, a subtle blue could be a stylish addition to a bathroom, and a pale green floor in the conservatory could extend the outside in.

Solar Panels – Seam Fix On Zinc

With a zinc roof likely to be in place for 50 years or more, integrated solar /photovoltaic panels will almost certainly need to be upgraded well within that time. Without the ability to guarantee that the new panels will be of exactly the same size, replacement within a standing seam system could be unduly problematic and costly. VMZINC now offers a ‘future-proof’ system which enables panels to be seam-fixed to the roof. This makes them easy to install, maintain, gain access to and replace. They are securely clamped to the standing seam system without the need for it to be penetrated in any way.

Seamless Performance Since 1985Decothane, Liquid Plastics’ market leading liquid roof membrane, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Decothane is a liquid applied roof membrane that cures to provide completely seamless waterproof protection. Detail roof areas can be easily encapsulated and because of its cold application there is no requirement for any heat or naked flame on the roof. Guarantees are available for 10, 15, 20 or 25 years – with evidence now available of Decothane roof systems lasting beyond that life expectancy. Decothane also has many environmental credentials. For example at the end of the guarantee period the life of the roof system can easily be extended by a further 10 or 15 years without the need to remove any of the old material, offering life cycle cost savings throughout the building’s lifetime. Decothane can be used as a stand alone waterproofing membrane or as part of a full built-up roof system. It is also available in a root resistant variant for use in green roof and inverted roof systems. www.liquidplastics.co.uk

Going Green At The Museum Of London

The garden roof in the centre of the Museum of London has now been refurbished and brought into the 21st century with a versatile waterproofing solution that allows the museum to change the emphasis of the landscape design to fit in with any feature display that is taking place in the surrounding galleries if required.360 tonnes of soil had to be dug out by hand and removed by wheelbarrow through the museum. Craning of equipment or construction materials was vetoed because of the museum’s location, degree of adjacent offices and its neighbouring community of domestic residents. The original asphalt roof covering was also removed to expose the concrete deck construction.A major issue for the new waterproofing was the perimeter detailing where the waterproofing had to meet the abutted glazing. This was overcome with using a cold liquid applied waterproofing which is compatible with the new root resistant elastomeric bitumen membrane system installed to the main deck area.Large granite and terracotta planters were re-potted with plants to support the new fully inhabited and functional beehive, which has been installed as part of the City of London Festival. All works to the roof had to take place with the museum remaining open throughout so a co-ordinated approach between the museum, their project manager Gavin McCourt MRICS, the roofing contractor, Russell Trew Ltd and the waterproofing manufacturer, Bauder Ltd was essential to the success of the installation. The spectacular Galleries of Modern London are now open to the public and are a real testament to how interactive and advanced a museum can be. Additionally, the museum, as part of its sustainability plan, is looking to refurbish the remaining roofs on the main building, so that there will be a large proportion of differing green roofs, including biodiversity and native species plug planted.

Zinc For Listed Building Penthouses The surge in popularity of zinc roofing and cladding systems owes much to the design scope that the metal provides. Grade II listed Hanover House, a former Victorian textile mill in the ‘Little Germany’ area of central Bradford, shows how VMZINC’s standing seam system in ANTHRA-ZINC has been used to complement the Yorkshire stone and prevailing local use of slate.Kraus Schönberg Architects sophisticated design for the Garbe Group involved complete refurbishment and the addition of a roof extension. However, because of the building’s listing, the 1300m2 zinc and engineered timber roof was designed to be self-supporting. A further requirement of the conversion to high specification apartments was to use a sustainable, high performance material with proven colour retention. The spatial concept shows how zinc has been used to suit the local vernacular, blending a contemporary material with traditional elements of design. The use of zinc in complex folds has led to the project becoming winner of the 4th Archizinc Trophy.

Main Contractor, SDC Builders in Bedford, requested a green roof as the top finishing layer on the roofs pitched at 17.5 degrees, and wanted a waterproofing membrane system with a long life expectancy which was not a PVC. Roofing Contractor, Cambridge Asphalte Group, recommended SpectraROOFs’ mechanically fixed Spectraplan SM120 dark grey, a polyester reinforced TPE waterproofing system with a dark grey standing seam to complete the specification. The 2000m2 project completed also has an irrigation system to water the green roof finish.Spectraplan TPE membranes are environmentally friendly using no plasticisers or halogens in their manufacture, releasing none either in the case of fire and being fully recyclable at the end of their useful life. This is usually a very important specification issue when considering public establishments. Production of SpectraROOF single ply membranes commenced at the company’s Clay Cross site in September 2009, making SpectraROOF the only manufacturer of single ply products in the UK. AquaDrain 25 – The Best Way To Create Efficient Green Roof Drainage

AquaDrain 25 provides the ultimate solution to roof garden drainage, offering a structural, lightweight void former that can be used in place of heavy stone. The use of AquaDrain 25 with any roof garden design can improve infiltration rates whilst decreasing the added pressures of other heavy products.

With a 96% void ratio, AquaDrain 25 has more than 3x the storage capacity of typical stone gravel. When combined with the excessive costs of sourcing and transporting stone, AquaDrain 25 can make essential job savings – especially helpful during today’s economical climate.

AquaDrain’s main benefit is its structural capability. Designed to take loading, its clever structural design gives more for less – allowing a void ratio of 96% combined with a loading capacity of up to 200t/m2. When laying multiple plates, the unique clipping system creates one structural mass and prevents later problems caused by lateral movement. The lightweight, modular structure is one of the most open on the market and has consistently shown that it is the best way to create both structurally capable and drainage efficient green roofs.

Also available:AquaDrain 50 - a larger void for more drainage.Pluvial Cube - a modular storage cube that can provide drainage capacity for more excessive requirements.[w] www.y-ess.com

Solarlux’s Versatile Horizontally Sliding Wall Horizontally sliding walls are individual glass panels, with frames that are thermally insulated allowing panels to be moved to a parking area. The SL60-HSW is suitable for shops, shopping malls, hotels and restaurants or any location where variable openings are required. Solarlux Systems Ltd are a well known manufacturer of folding glass doors and have considerable experience in the design, manufacture and installation of these highly engineered doors. The SL60-HSW is a top-hung system with maximum panel sizes of 1200mm wide x 3500mm high. Espagnolettes with a 24mm throw bolt ensure the system is extremely sturdy as well

as providing high security. The system can also be installed as a facetted installation.

One advantage of the top hung system is that it allows for three types of floor track, flush, floor track allowing barrier free entry, bolted when just locater bolts are used to secure the system or raised, when a barrier to the weather is important. Ball bearing runners and unique running and guide technology ensure that the panels are easy to use and are able to be ‘parked’ in special bays. As the panels are separate as many panels as required can be opened and others locked in place. The locking rods are stored in a unique space in the frame of the panel ensuring that they are always easy to access. The multi-chamber, aluminium frame is thermally insulated offering a u value as low as 1.51 W/m2K, and an entry/ exit panel can be integrated into any position in the completed installation and is fitted with either an elegant lever handle or pull handle. Bowled Over By Benchmark Façades The warmth of wood against the cool strength of granite provides a winning combination of products

from Benchmark on the new £1.6 million Worcestershire County Cricket Club members and players pavilion. The Ceramic Granite and Wood Composite façades were specified to provide sharp modern clean lines and were installed to all four elevations of the two-storey pavilion. The Wood Composite façade for the pavilion was specified in rich Rustic. The real wood veneers of the Wood Composite façades are sourced from sustainably managed forests, and a tough resin finish protects the wood. The hardwearing Ceramic Granite façade combines refined clays, quartz, feldspars and metal oxides to closely reproduce all the beauty and variation of natural granite or marble, but in

comparison with naturally quarried materials, the loadings on the substructure and building exterior are dramatically reduced. A secret fix system for both products allows the materials to be presented in an uninterrupted smooth face.

Technal Helps To Create ‘Dazzling’ Façade For Iconic New Campus Building And 2012 Olympic Training Centre

Architectural aluminium systems specialist, Technal, has helped to create a highly distinctive and complex façade for an innovative new campus building at the University of Sunderland, using three variations of its MX curtain walling system. The CitySpace facility, which has been selected by the ODA as an Olympic and Paralympic training camp for London 2012, has also achieved a BREEAM excellent rating. Glazing contractors, AC Yule, worked alongside the design team from the earliest stages to develop a highly engineered solution using two options from Technal’s MX curtain wall suite – giving the appearance of bespoke façades but with all the cost, lead-time and performance advantages of a proven aluminium system.Technal’s MX SSG structural glazing was used to form distinctive coloured rectilinear openings between pre-cast concrete panels in a striking random pattern. This is the first time the system has been used in this way. MX SSG is a flush curtain walling option which met the architect’s requirements for less visible aluminium and clear expanses of glass. Interlayers for the laminated glass in five shades of green give the building a clear identity and provide a strong contrast to the crisp white L-shaped concrete panels on the most prominent elevation.

Specialist Technology School Is State Of The Art With Carea Rainscreen CladdingA specialist school for technology and the arts, the £20million Sir William Stanier School, Crewe, amalgamated two existing schools into one flagship institution. Specifiers insisted on a rainscreen cladding system that was sustainable, attractive and had the ability to reduce exterior noise. To achieve this, they turned to producer of facade systems, Carea, and its renowned Acantha cladding. The cladding panels feature innovative grooves for efficient installation and are available in over 30 different shades and a range of textures. They provide excellent thermal efficiency to buildings and eliminate cold bridging, as well as comprising around 95% natural minerals. It was necessary for the school to meet stringent BB93 standards for educational buildings and acoustic design and Carea panels, owing to their composite manufacture, have the ability to deaden noise.

RMIG Makes A Splash With Perforated Metal Swimming Pool ArtA striking 102 metre long art installation at a new public swimming bath complex in Copenhagen has been created using precision perforated and laser cut metals from the RMIG Group, working closely with respected Danish contemporary artist, Helle Frøsig.

The new artwork, entitled ‘Therma’, was commissioned jointly by the Danish Art Foundation’s Environment and Public Art Committee and the Copenhagen Municipality, as part of the £19.5 million (DKr 161 million) re-development and upgrading of the Bellahøj swimming complex, which was designed by one of Denmark’s largest architectural practices, Arkitema Architects.Running the full length of one of the interior walls, alongside the 50 metre competition pool in the new 8,145m2 swimming hall, ‘Therma’ is manufactured from 105 separate 2 mm thick hot dip galvanised steel panels, each of which is precision perforated, shaped and laser cut by RMIG to the artist’s exact specifications. Each perforated steel panel measures 1200mm wide by 2940mm high and includes a number of different circular and slotted perforation patterns and cut out forms depending on the specific location within the overall design.A number of separate aluminium shapes are also incorporated into the design, representing different aspects of water, such as clouds, bubbles, jugs and bowls. Again, each shape was precision cut by RMIG before being coated in one of nine separate colours and fitted into precise cutouts within the galvanised steel wall panel system.Continuing the water theme, the design includes four ceramic drinking fountains, specially shaped and coloured to reflect the aluminium shapes and act as an integral part of the £173,000 (DKr 1.417 million) artwork. My objective was that the design should appear as if it was growing out of the wall and is being born with the building, yet act as an irrational and playful element among the many functions of the building,” said Helle

Frøsig:RMIG’s project co-ordinator, Steffen Andersen, explained: “We undertake a significant amount of work for the building and architectural sectors, primarily with our perforated cladding, balconies and balustrades, yet this is not the first time we have worked with artists in helping them bring their designs into reality to add a unique finish to a particular building.”He added: “Our experiences in developing the artist designed cladding for the multi-award winning Oslo Opera House was put to good use with this project as we worked alongside Helle Frøsig in manufacturing every piece of the ‘sculpture’ to ensure it not only met her creative demands, but was also uncomplicated to install on site.”Until the construction of the new indoor swimming hall, which not only includes an Olympic sized swimming pool but also a diving pool and teaching facilities, Bellahøj had been well known for its outdoor pool. The entire construction and refurbishment project took four years to complete and the new baths opened in late 2009.

At its national headquarters in Chorley, Lancashire, Shackerley has demonstrated to great effect the transformative benefits of its Queen’s Award winning Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated facade system. The company has given its main offices and customer showroom a makeover and the 100-year old, two-storey building is now unrecognisable in its new ‘overcoat’.To refurbish the elevations, some 350m2 of Shackerley’s most highly polished large format black ceramic granite panels were used, in a 1m2 format carefully specified to complement the design and proportions of the

building. Given the need to accommodate features such as the windows and entrances, the majority of the panels need to be cut to bespoke sizes. This specialised cutting was carried out under IS0 9001 certified quality controlled conditions, just a hundred metres away in the

company’s main production facility. The panels were then prefabricated for use in conjunction with Shackerley’s Sureclad Hang On carrier system which is specifically designed to cater for the heaviest ceramic granite panels in the range. Four undercut holes were made in the back of each panel using Shackerley’s specially designed, computer controlled, drilling machines and drill heads. Four metal brackets were attached using a patented undercut anchor system to achieve a safe secure and stress free mechanical fix. These brackets allowed the panels to be ‘invisibly’ fixed to a carrier system of vertical and horizontal rails to deliver a sleek monolithic appearance.Retro-fitting ceramic granite ventilated cladding has not just transformed Shackerley’s HQ aesthetically: it has also enabled the company to upgrade the thermal efficiency of the building in a highly effective manner, without disturbing the interior workspaces in any way.

The Sureclad Hang On system creates a ventilated cavity behind the ceramic granite facade which will accommodate a substantial layer of thermal and acoustic insulation. In this case Shackerley installed Kingspan’s rigid phenolic insulation panels in the cavity to deliver a significant improvement in the U-value for the building.Shackerley Group CEO Brian Newell said: “The vast majority of Sureclad systems we have supplied have been for new build developments. However, as we have very clearly demonstrated on our own building, this versatile system can be used to great effect in refurbishment projects and can dramatically improve the appearance and thermal performance of a building. “Seeing our HQ for the first time, no-one would guess that behind these impressive, contemporary facades stands a 100-year old building. Now that we have enveloped and protected it in ceramic granite, a material which is totally impervious to the elements, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t still be here in another hundred years’ time.” For further information please call Shackerley on 0800 783 0391, email [email protected] or click on www.shackerley.com

Sliding StyleIn an increasingly competitive market specifiers and developers want and need to ensure a property is attractive to buyers without ramping up expenditure unnecessarily.

The internal appearance and layout of a property is key, with even what may be thought small details having a big potential impact on a prospective buyer’s decision. With this in mind, choosing the right internal doors - including those for wardrobes and cabinets - should be done carefully. What’s more, selecting the right products can offer better use of space and more efficient storage – a big attraction for a home of any size.

Let’s start by taking a look at fitted wardrobes with sliding doors, as they are proving an increasingly popular option not just with the trade but also with TV design shows, which have a big impact on consumer fashion. A big attraction here is the sleek, modern look that can be easily achieved. With a wide variety of styles and finishes available, both new build projects and refurbishment work to revive a tired looking property can benefit from attractive and fashionable storage. Furthermore, other bedroom furniture such as bedside cabinets can now be made-to-measure with matching finishes to give a really high-end look without the hefty cost.

In fact, with all units available as made-to-measure, an effective solution can be found whatever the size and shape of space you have to work with. In new properties, units can be specifically fitted for full floor to ceiling storage and that all-important “wow” factor, whilst for high-end projects they can be tailor-made for each plot. In refurbished properties they are bringing a new edge to an old feel, cost effectively adding an up-to-date look with the minimum of effort, regardless of the shape of the space you have to fit them into.

Importantly, sliding doors can now be made in widths of up to 1000mm, as opposed to the 300mm-500mm offered by hinged doors, meaning that they can offer a greater degree of design flexibility. What’s more, new systems with an apparently frameless door, where the wide panels appear even larger due to the lack of a visible surrounding frame, are soon to appear on the market.

The same broad scope for design and style can also be applied to internal doors, which not only offer a versatile way to separate open plan areas, but can also provide a real design boost. An increasing trend has been to replace standard wooden doors with modern-looking glass versions, which allows a more airy feel to a room and also makes a room feel larger.

Crucially, choosing sliding systems for storage and internal doors allows a stylish look and space-efficient layout to be achieved without breaking the bank, giving a big boost to specifiers and developers looking for the edge when it comes to attracting buyers.

Creating a dramatic dialogue between wall and interior, Armourcoat polished plaster has been used to stunning effect at the Aviator Hotel in Farnborough. Architects Hamiltons have designed a sleek, curvaceous building, inspired by the shape of a propeller, for TAG Aviation at Farnborough Airport. Armourcoat’s polished plasters have been used in the lobby, where taupe stone flooring is complemented by horizontal bands of milk chocolate coloured Smooth and Spatulata walls. Armourcoat’s skilled craftsmen finished a total of 271m2 by superimposing bands of Spatulata polished plaster over the primary layer of Smooth. The result is a striking contrast between two smooth finishes one patterned with a glassy surface the other uniform and lightly polished. This seamless, natural looking effect of Armourcoat polished plaster represents a luxurious, hardwearing, monolithic finish. Behind the stairwell, a glass encased fireplace is set into the wall, giving views through to the brasserie, where more silky smooth polished plaster is displayed to great effect.

Thanks to the determination and missionary zeal of the Wirral Christian Centre, a derelict and badly vandalised Birkenhead church dating back to 1886 has been saved from wrack and ruin with an extensive £1 million restoration project. Sadolin Classic wood protection has been used extensively throughout the project to bring the interiors back to their former glory.Whilst some areas of what was formerly the Oxton Congregational Church have yet to be renovated, the building has been transformed after 15 years of neglect into a new home for the Christian organisation, and is once again providing a place of worship and focal point for the local community. A key member of the restoration team was Kevin Murphy, proprietor of Shropshire based Painting and Decorating Services. He recommended to the church leaders that Sadolin Classic should be used to decorate and protect the newly restored barrelled ceiling of the main building and all other interior wooden features needing translucent protection. He said: “We wanted to use Sadolin Classic because it offers great protection for new and previously stained wood and the finish allows all the natural grain and detail to show through. It’s pleasant to work with and goes on really well as a base and secondary coat.” Because the ceiling had suffered serious water and fire damage, many new sections of wooden panelling had to be fitted. “Our challenge was to blend these bare new panels with original and repaired sections, all with different colouring and absorbencies, and somehow achieve a consistent colour

across the whole area,” explained Kevin, “Luckily there are lots of quite finely differentiated shades to work with in the Sadolin Classic range. Crown Paints gave us a lot of help with samples and by experimenting with different shades and numbers of coats, we soon had a system in place to build up a rich and warm teak colour across the whole ceiling. It was a long and laborious task, made more difficult by having to work at heights, but the ceiling now looks stunning and it’s usually the first thing people comment on when they enter the church.”Senior Minister of the Wirral Christian Centre, the Reverend Paul Epton, is full of praise for all the work carried by his decorating contractors. “Kevin and his team have done a superb job. They’ve helped to restore this lovely old church to its former glory and create a beautiful, warm and welcoming place of worship for our congregation.”

Church Roof Restored To Former Glory With Sadolin

Sandtex Trade Introduces X-Treme X-Posure™ Having reappraised the properties of High X-posure Smooth Masonry Paint, Sandtex Trade has renamed its most durable and flexible, weather resistant exterior masonry coating ‘X-treme X-posure™’, in order to differentiate its superior performance characteristics to specifiers more clearly.

Sandtex Brand Manager Liz Bowater said: “We’ve taken the unusual step of renaming and relaunching one of the most well established and widely specified products in the Sandtex Trade range because we believe we may have been ‘underselling’ its exceptional features and benefits until now. The new name, X-treme X-posure™ should leave no-one in any doubt that this is the product to specify in the most

exposed and challenging locations, demanding the best possible weather and climate protection, longlasting decorative benefits and the most effective resistance to dirt and pollution.”

Liz explains: “With its high performance acrylic binder, hydrophobic dirt resistant formulation and anti-carbonation properties, X-treme X-posure™ gives unrivalled protection from natural elements and man-made threats alike. Whilst our new packaging shows a lighthouse in an exposed, sea swept coastal location, this coating is equally suitable for use on urban dwellings in built up areas which are constantly under attack from traffic fumes, smog and pollution. In fact, it can be relied on to decorate and protect almost any type of commercial, residential or public sector building, new or old. From hotels to

housing estates, high rise developments to hospitals, X-treme X-posure™ offers the very best performance on the market.”Liz continues: “From an aesthetic point of view, X-treme X-posure™ can be used to disguise minor surface imperfections such as hairline cracks in render, and because it cures to a flexible finish, the coating will expand and contract with the substrate helping to prevent further cracking. In terms of colour choice, there are ten ready mixed shades available plus Brilliant White, with a further 640 tinted colours to choose from in the Sandtex Trade Colour Coach masonry and trim fan decks.”

Sandtex Trade’s claims of longlasting durability and protection are based on extensive in-house laboratory and field tests which have been independently verified and endorsed. X-treme X-posure™ carries the BBA badge of certification for 15 years’ proven durability which gives specifiers the reassurance they need that exterior masonry will be effectively protected wherever it is located and however challenging the environmental conditions might be.

Project: Dublin Airport Terminal 2

Yorkon Completes Its Most Northerly Building Project – A 13,000sqft Supermarket For Tesco

The project involved delivering 26 purpose-built supermarket modules by road from the Yorkon production centre in York to Aberdeen, where they were transported by sea in three shipments to the cargo terminal in Kirkwall. A 500-tonne crane was then used to install the building modules on site in only three days, ready for the final stages of fitting out, stocking and commissioning of the store.Working closely with main contractors Barr Construction, Yorkon was able to reduce the build time on site to just three weeks, minimising any disruption to Tesco customers. The interim store will remain open for up to 20 weeks while the adjacent existing Tesco supermarket in Kirkwall is demolished and replaced with a larger 25,000sqft scheme. The interim store will then be broken down to its modular components and relocated to another Tesco site for use as either a permanent or another interim supermarket. The store is a new modular supermarket design that Yorkon has developed with Tesco. The store design is almost three times the size of the Express convenience stores manufactured by Yorkon for Tesco, and has been engineered to minimise the number of internal columns for maximum clear spans. Facilities include an in-store bakery, frozen food and chiller sections, office, store room, staff facilities, plant room, cleaner’s area and bulk storage.

Highly Sustainable Building Solution For Eggborough Power Station

A recycled modular building has been selected by Eggborough Power Station to provide a new Outage Control Centre. The purpose-designed facility was supplied by Foremans Relocatable Building Systems in just 10 weeks from receipt of order to handover, ready for the start of the power station’s intensive maintenance season. The centre near Goole comprises eight fully refurbished pre-owned building modules, and provides a range of facilities, including a fully equipped first aid room, offices and meeting rooms, shower and changing areas, reception and industrial kitchen. This facility, also constructed from pre-owned building modules, accommodates the CCTV monitoring room, offices, toilets and shower room, and a mess room. The use of recycled modular buildings is one of the most environmentally sound methods of construction. It generates less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions and uses less than 3 per cent of the energy during construction, compared to a newly manufactured building of equivalent size (source: MPBA/Arup). The approach is also highly thermally efficient. In England, tests for air permeability on pre-owned modular buildings are not compulsory. However, in independent tests, Foremans recycled modular buildings have performed up to 80 per cent better than Building Regulations requirements. This means reduced energy consumption, and lower running costs and carbon emissions.

Sika In The Swim At West Midland Safari ParkA swimming pool for Rhino is probably one of the most unusual applications for Sika Watertight Concrete, but this was the ideal solution for West Midland Safari Park’s exciting new ‘Realm of the Indian Rhino’ exhibit. A pair of Indian Rhinoceros has been introduced to the Park for the first time, and to accommodate them, a £500,000 state of the art house has been built within their large free roaming enclosure. The BBA-certified Sika Watertight Concrete system was an ideal choice for constructing the pool. It has many benefits over traditional methods of waterproofing, including simplified design coupled with time saving on site through the elimination of detailing of tanking membranes. Sika Watertight Concrete is used in conjunction with the SikaSwell® jointing system, which consists of joint sealing profiles that expand on contact with water, thus ensuring the pool will remain watertight despite the robustness of its occupants.

DuPont™ Typar Geosynthetic Has The Winning Formula For ThoroughbredsWhen Peter Keatley of Curragh Equine Ground Care was contracted to install new training gallops for a top stud farm in the Republic of Ireland, it made sense to choose a geotextile that could perform to thoroughbred standards. DuPont™ Typar® geosynthetic offered all the right qualities to act as both filtration and separation layer between soil and stone and between the draining bed and the running surfaces, which vary between sand, wood chip and a waxed all-weather surface. Destined to exercise some of the finest horse flesh in the racing world, and hopefully a fair share of cup winners, the gallops needed to offer a reliable integrity.

Over 9,000 sq.m of DuPont™ Typar® SF geosynthetic was specified and has now been laid in two stages. Peter Keatley explains that he chose DuPont™ Typar® because, “It’s a good product with all the right qualities, it’s easy to install and we received great service from DuPont. What’s more we had some particular requirements that were very well met by the product. The gallops with a sand surface need to be raked after use, but this product won’t tear and there are no pulled threads if it happens to be punctured by a rake.” DuPont™ Typar® is an outstanding geosynthetic for both civil and privategroundwork construction projects due to its advanced manufacturing process. DuPont™ Typar® is composed

of continuous polypropylene filaments thermally bonded by a unique technology. This provides DuPont™ Typar® with superior uniformity and rigidity combined with high elongation capacity and initial modulus, which gives excellent resistance to damage and controlled deformation of the surface under service stresses.

DuPont™ Typar® also has high energy absorption potential (and therefore excellent resistance against all those thundering hooves!) and its optimum hydraulic properties enhance long-term filtration conditions. The material can improve load bearing capacity and by reducing deformations it ensures longevity of construction. So the equine residents of the stud farm – and the Curragh Race Course Training Centre, where the material will also be used – can be sure that the going will always be good in their new state-of-the-art training gallops.

Lanes Gets Duerr’s Out Of A Jam

Drainage specialist, Lanes for Drains, has helped jam manufacturer Duerr’s out of a sticky situation. The company had thought it was facing a 3-month shutdown to fix a damaged drain at its Manchester factory, but Lanes was able to reline the 150mm diameter process pipe in just 48 hours. Lanes’ camera and jetting teams went in to Duerr’s factory at 3am on the Saturday morning. The reline crew then worked through to the following morning to install a felt liner impregnated with a special vinylester resin - Derakane - chosen especially for its high resistance to chemicals and heat. Once the liner had been cured in place, using water heated to temperature and left in situ for the required length of time, the cutting crew opened up the manhole access points and a final survey revealed the new look pipeline which was clean, round and smooth, a complete contrast to the broken and silted up drain of the earlier survey. The company has asked Lanes to carry out a full clean and survey of the site’s drainage system.

Repairing Grainges And Cedar Car Parks To BS EN 1504Chris Gallivan, Product Manager Construction Products, BASF Construction Chemicals (UK) Ltd

The Cedar and Grainges multi-storey car parks are situated above retail units and linked to the Pavilions shopping complex in Uxbridge town centre. Their structural appraisal identified high levels of chloride contamination from de-icing salts, with extensive spalling to both the concrete deck and soffit. In line with the latest European Specification advice on concrete repair, Hillingdon Council specified that all repair materials should meet BS EN 1504 Part 3 “all and certain intended uses”. In this project the two main criteria within the certain intended uses were: proven resistance to carbonation as the repairs were to remain uncoated and proven resistance to freeze thaw, as the uncoated repairs would be exposed to the external environment and would be in contact with de-icing salts once in service.

The programme of works for the large-scale repairs within the car park decks demanded a fast-setting, pourable concrete repair mortar in winter conditions and a slower setting grade for summer conditions, both with proven durability and resistance to de-icing salts. A structural mortar was needed for deck soffit repairs. A further challenge was presented by difficult site working restrictions and limited possession time. A number of compliant concrete repair materials from BASF Construction Chemicals met these challenges.

SurveyThe concrete decks had high concentrations of chlorides from de-icing salts; leaching of these chlorides through construction joints and cracks had resulted in spalling of the deck soffit. The deck comprised a waffle

design, with many waffles being salt laden, so requiring complete removal. To reinstate these areas, prefabricated waffle moulds were positioned from below the deck, supported by props. This resulted in all car park spaces above and below deck repairs being out of use during repairs.

Repair works programmeTo minimise time out of service the project was completed in two phases, starting at Grainges, where the most extensive of the repairs were needed, and followed by Cedars car park. The contractor, Makers Construction Ltd, employed a number of measures to minimise disruption for car park users, paying special attention to traffic management and maintaining the maximum number of parking spaces possible throughout.

Equipment and breakout The repairs were broken out using compressed air driven breakers and a semi-automated robotic breaker was used where the removal of the complete waffle was needed. The edges of the concrete patches were prepared using angle grinders and the reinforcement was grit blasted before priming and installation of the repair mortar.

Concrete Preparation EMACO® Nanocrete AP primer, a cement-based primer with active corrosion inhibitor, conforming to BS EN 1540 part 7, was applied to the steel reinforcement. Once cured the prepared concrete surface was pre-dampened with water prior to repair.

Mortar selection To repair the soffit of the slabs a structural repair mortar to BS EN 1504 Part 3 Class R4 was specified. BASF’s EMACO® Nanocrete R4 fully met the specification regarding “all and certain intended uses”. The material was applied by gloved hand and finished by trowel to provide a smooth finish.

Application of large patch repairs For the horizontal deck repairs a mortar to BS EN 1504 Part 3 Class R4 was specified to reinstate the cover to the steel. Here BASF’s EMACO®Fast Fluid fully met the specification in terms of “all and certain intended uses”.

The larger patches, measuring 15–20 m2 in area by 75–100 mm in depth, were split into three bays and repaired on a hit-and-miss basis. Repairs carried out at the start of the project typically took place at a temperature of 5˚C, however the mortar provided sufficient working time in excess of one hour to allow full placement of the repair patch.

As the programme of works progressed into the summer and ambient temperatures of around 15˚C, a longer working time was required. EMACO® Nanocrete R4 fluid was substituted, which again fully met “all and certain intended uses” and provided the same working time.

For key repairs to the entry and exit ramps where the highest impact loading was concentrated, BASF’s EMACO®Fast Fibre, a steel-fibre reinforced rapid-setting mortar with high impact resistance, was selected, which fully met BS EN 1504 Part 3 Class R4 “all and certain intended uses”.

The key to meeting the tight programme was the removal and demoulding of the waffle mould once the specified compressive

strength of 35 N/mm2 had been reached. This strength was always acquired within the stipulated three-day period during both winter and summer working by careful selection of the appropriate compliant mortar.

Curing Once finished, each patch was cured with BASF’s Masterkure 181 curing agent and covered with polythene sheeting to minimise moisture loss to the repair zones, which were typically opened to traffic within a minimum of seven days

ConclusionAs demonstrated here, BS EN 1504 can be used to specify key performance properties for repair mortars, tailored to meet the environment within which the materials must perform. A clear understanding of the standard by the specifier and main contractor ensures that the local environment is accounted for prior to the project commencing.

A wide selection of fully compliant BASF repair mortars enabled the specifier to select the key performance properties required whilst the main contractor could select from a range of mortars with different physical properties according to their location of use. A partnering approach ensured that specification and application were coordinated, allowing the project to run smoothly from start to finish, completing on time.

Challenging Task at Data Centre

Fine finishing company, Plastic Surgeon Ltd, has been called in to rectify damage to internal building components at Link62 Data Centre, a huge warehouse facility which will be used to store digital information. A large number of interlocking internal cladding panels with a highly reflective paint finish to the steel had become damaged during the build process and, as they could not be demounted individually, required to be repaired in-situ. The 2 mm thick Eurobond had suffered chips, dents, scratches and even puncture holes, disfiguring mainly the lower areas to panels which were up to 12 metres tall. Such was the scale of the challenge that another repair company initially recruited to undertake the remedial work had been overwhelmed and unable to cope. The huge quantity of individual repairs, coupled with health and safety issues surrounding working with paint and other finishing products in confined areas- as well as a looming deadline - all increased the need for effective action. Following a well established procedure for dealing with damaged cladding panels, the individual areas in the profiles were filled and reshaped using Plastic Surgeon’s two-part fillers and then sanded back using a graduation of abrasives to achieve a smooth surface. Plastic Surgeon sourced specially formulated low solvent, odour free paint for the project and applied it using low pressure, high volume spraying equipment purchased specifically to help meet the onerous health and safety requirements. As Plastic Surgeon has a national team of Fine Finishers it was able to draft in skilled workers from across its regions. They worked under the supervision of a dedicated site manager, to restore the cladding panels with their pale blue-grey coating to a high standard of finish.

When Carruan Farm was purchased in the 1950s as a traditional beef and sheep farm, the owners could have had no idea that nearly 60 years later, the farm would be featured on TV as one of Cornwall’s key tourist attractions. And to show the farm in its very best light for its media debut, woodstains from Jotun were used extensively to spruce up the appearance. Today, the Carruan Farm Park is still a working farm, with over 1000 ewes, a beef herd and saddleback pigs. Five years ago, it expanded its operations to incorporate a shop, restaurant and a farm experience for children. It was noted by the makers of Seaside SOS, hosted by Duncan Bannatyne and thanks to the generosity of the programme makers, a huge area of the centre has been redecorated using the Jotun product range. The Demidekk Ultimate and Butinox 1 paints were supplied by local merchant, Rabart Decorating Merchants of Redruth for external application on the restaurant, office buildings and barns where the children’s activities take place. Butinox 1 woodstain provides a translucent finish that gives up to five years protection to the timber. Demidekk is water-

borne and in contrast, presents an opaque silk like finish for enhanced decoration. Both coatings have been formulated for UV resistance and long term durability.Owner Mike Parnell is delighted both with the result and the collaboration with the television programme. The colour scheme was particularly important as both Mike and the producers wanted to reflect the environmental impact of the centre through visual means. This was achieved by using a mixture of green and ivory colours on the exterior of the buildings.

Trend Glass Mosaic Wallpaper Shines In Last Series Of Big BrotherKeen-eyed viewers of the current series of Channel 4’s ‘Big Brother’ will have spotted not one, but two distinctive wallpaper designs in the bathroom. One is a custom-made floral wallpaper depicting scenes from previous shows, whilst the other is a trend-setting glass mosaic ‘wallpaper’, consisting of thousand upon thousand of tiny mosaic tiles or tesserae. Designed and made in Italy and now available in the UK, this innovative mosaic wallcovering forms part of the Trend Wallpaper collection, designed to create outstanding feature walls with tactile appeal. Prices start from £180 per square metre. One of a collection of 64 patterns and 130 colourways, the BB-featured wallpaper is Damask from the Classic style theme, which brings patterns from the past right up-to-date, in the simplest, most sophisticated shapes and shades. Like paper wallcoverings, it has the repeated modular structure of wallpaper and is supplied on backing material, ready to fix on most interior and exterior surfaces, yet it is shiny, touchable, hardwearing, moisture resistant and, yes, intrinsically precious. Since they comprise tiny 1.5cm (⅝”) square tiles, the pattern repeats can be applied smoothly across flat or contoured substrates, on walls, floors, ceilings, swimming pools - nowhere is out of bounds. Trend Wallpaper is perfect for humid and moisture-laden environments, which is one reason why Big Brother’s interior designers chose it to grace the house’s bathroom, outside shower and plunge pool. The producers contacted Trend in Italy three months before the launch show, and the company subsequently supplied 60 square metres of Damask tiles to the Elstree film studios. Big Brother’s own contracted tilers fitted the wallpaper and its prominent positioning alongside the ‘Tree of Temptation’, around the vanity units and sunken bath, and surrounding the outdoor pool, should ensure plenty of screen time during the show’s 13 week run. Epitomising the versatility and creativity of modern glass mosaics, the Trend Italia design team, headed by Federica Bisazza, has also rendered the iconic Big Brother eye motif as a classic mosaic wall panel (see image), with each tiny square representing a single 1cm x 1cm tile. The resultant panel would measure 4m x 2.52m and feature almost 80,000 individual tiles in 50 different shades; the price would be around £4,500 for the 1cm2 version or under £3,000 using larger 1.5cm2 mosaics. This would certainly make an eyecatching memento for an avid Big Brother fan and, indeed, any personal design or picture can be rendered to produce customised wallpaper or a single decorative panel, to special order.

Architect and journalist Christopher Sykes looks at one of the latest projects to use innovative new technology for insulating daylighting systems

One of Europe’s latest projects to use Nanogel® aerogel insulation technology has opened in Dublin. The 4-storey facility, designed by architects A & D Wejchert & Partners, comprises small rooms with external walls accessed by interior corridors that overlook a central open courtyard. It was decided to illuminate the rooms with as much healthy natural daylight as possible. However the potential energy efficiency, noise pollution and privacy problems created by having such large areas of fenestration in the building envelope had to be addressed. The solution was extensive use of the airtight Kalwall + Nanogel daylighting system which diffuses natural daylight and casts it evenly and deeply across the interior, without the presence of shadows or glare or the need for solar control.

By using Nanogel within the panels, a dramatic insulation U value of 0.28 is obtained - equivalent to a solid wall - thereby increasing its energy-saving performance. Nanogel is based on translucent silica aerogel, the world’s most insulating solid which comprises up to 90% air. Project architect Helen Giblin said, ‘Our concern was that over its lifecycle, this primary care centre should perform highly efficiently and reduce its running costs by saving energy on artificial lighting, heating and air-conditioning. For these reasons, we are delighted that the health authority supported our decision to specify Nanogel aerogel’.

The Kalwall cladding and roofing system, supplied by Stoakes Systems, is particularly favoured for healthcare, schools, sports halls and other people-sensitive facilities where its healthy natural light can enhance well-being and creates a calm and attractive ambience which is equally ideal for study, work or leisure. For Dublin, the system incorporates the new highly efficient Kalwall Eurowindow vision panels designed to facilitate external views and optional ventilation. It also provides the added benefit of privacy which is not possible with conventional glazing.

The effect of Kalwall+ Nanogel in this facility means that patients and staff get to enjoy all the benefits which natural daylight brings to their health, well-being and productivity. At the same time, the facility is saving money and energy and, importantly, using materials that are environmentally friendly and reusable. The final result is a modern, robust, energy-efficient and sustainable building that is as attractive on the inside as it is welcoming on the outside, especially when it glows at night.
