Bull Run Region AACA What a wonderful day we had on our club tour on April 18. The weather was perfect for top down cruising. Thank you, Bill Haegele, for arranging the tour. These tours are one of the activities that make mem- bership in our region so enjoyable. With gasoline prices lower this year, we should arrange more of these! You can read more about the tour elsewhere in this newsletter. At our last meeting, we decided on a date for the display at the Cobble- stones Assisted Living Center (now called Emeritus at Manassas). It will be the afternoon of June 13. I will give you more information in the June Clutch Chatter. Please attend our annual display at the Strawberry Festival at Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, Virginia on May 23. We will also hold our May meeting there. If you ar- rive in your antique car by 9 AM, admission is free. Finally, the ODMA meet Bull Run is hosting is May 16. Pat still needs helpers (judges, parking attendants, banquet set- up). Please call her at 703-670- 5051 if you can help. The side benefit is you will see some great cars from throughout Virginia. BULL RUN AACA MEETING MINUTES Bull Run Region AACA Meeting Summary April 14, 2009 at the PWC Fairgrounds, Manassas, VA By Franklin Gage, Secretary President Leonard Paquette called the meeting to order promptly at 7:30 PM. After the Pledge of Allegiance, there were no guests to introduce but he did note his fellow Mus-tanger and seldom-seen Bull Run member George Parker was in attendance. Treasurer Nicki Hudson's report was unanimously accepted, and Membership Chair Sally Batchelder reported we remain at 94 families. Absent Sunshine Lady Ruth Blankenship sent in her report, which matched the last Clutch Chatter except for the unfortunate addition that Ken Farley had to have emergency surgery while judging at the AACA Spring Meet in Charlotte, NC; he and Shirley should be able to come home around April 18. As Bull Run is the sponsor this year of the Old Dominion Meet Association (ODMA) Show, Chair Pat Paquette (703/670-5051) reported on progress for our May 15-16, 2009 extravaganza in Woodbridge. Volunteers for the Fri-day Social (5-9 PM) May 15 and show day May 16 would be much appreciated. Parking (including trailers), set-up, clean-up and judging are among the tasks we need to fill. Since Chief Judge Ken Farley will not have recovered enough to attend, Jim Cross graciously agreed to be Chief Judge. Bull Run's ODMA Representative Richard Porter noted that this meet tends to attract especially interesting cars and their owners from all over Virginia and some of North Caro-lina, so members should especially enjoy attending the so-cial Friday evening and the show and banquet on Saturday. Pat has also been helping our Spring Tour Chair Bill Hae-gele, and reports we have about 10 cars signed up for our April 18 "Rt. 29" tour. Rohr Show Chair Richard Porter reported on progress for our Annual Show at the Manassas Museum on September 19, 2009. Please call Richard (703/590-4512) if you can help in the following ways: ---Trophy Sponsorship. If you, a friend or a business you know of donates $50, the sponsor will be added to the spon-sor list and be included on all the trophies for the class sponsored. ---Flyer distribution. Member Ernie Newland, owner of the UPS Store in Manassas, has printed very attractive show flyers and donated the color portion of the cost. Getting fly-ers distributed is the main way people learn about us, so please get some to share wherever you can.

---Judges. We plan to judge this show along AACA Guide-lines. We would like to enlist as many judges as possible prior to Show Day; it is fun and we need both experienced and less-experienced judges. If interested, please contact Richard or Chief Judge Franklin Gage (703/869-8434 or [email protected]). ---Display. The Manassas Heritage Festival is June 6, 2009; to promote our show we have been invited to display 3 cars and distribute flyers. It was noted that is the same day as the Historic Fredericksburg Region AACA's Annual Show which many of us want to attend, but if you won't be in Fredericksburg Richard would appreciate your help at the Festival and it should be fun. Tom Aman asked about creating a "Special Interest" Class for the show, which might include newer, unusual cars. Since our flyers are already printed, it was decided it would-n't be practical for this year but ought to be seriously consid-ered for next year. President Paquette reported that Billy Thompson (White Post Restorations) had generously offered a free 1980 Camaro to us as a fund raising raffle; reluctantly we couldn't accept his generosity because none of us has the time to restore it. Leonard also reported that member Jon Battle has offered to update our website, since our Charter Webguy Mike Jones wants to pass it on to someone else. Appreciation was expressed for Jon's offer. Vice-President Pete Pandolfi needs someone to sponsor a picnic meeting either for June or July, and to bring refresh-ments for September, November and December meetings. Please contact him at 703/754-4668 or [email protected]. It was noted that members attending the National AACA Spring Meet and Autofair in Charlotte included Jim Batchelder (no car), Ken & Shirley Farley (no car, but judges and Continuing Judges Education Seminar Leader), Franklin Gage ('59 Buick) and Bob Mantz, who won a Sen-ior Award for his '58 Chevy Impala convertible, and also bought a 1969 Chevelle. The winning 50/50 ticket holder was Sally Aman, with $15 for her and $15 for the club. Just prior to adjournment, Pat Paquette brought out a cake to celebrate April Birthdays, including hubby Leonard's (today) and Pam Pandolfi. Since Manassas volunteer firefighter Pete Pandolfi was there, to avoid any possible fire code violations there was just one candle. Along with birthday cake, we enjoyed a huge spread of refreshments brought by George & Joann Richardson.

TOP DOWN CRUISIN B Y B I L L H A E G E L E

Spring time means top-down cruisin’ with your favorite lady by your side. Throw in a group of fellow car enthusiasts, good food, great weather, and a scenic drive, and you have the makings for a great day. Such a great day occurred on Saturday, April 18 as my wife Deb and I, driving the RED 1964 Galaxie led a day tour of fellow Bull Run Region AACA members on a driving tour through the back roads of Virginia. The day started rather briskly at the War-renton Park & Ride on Rt 29. Gathering there were: Jim & Sally Batchelder, Pete & Pam Pan-dolfi, Kip & Nancy Hansen, Eck & Ruth Blankenship, George & Joann Richardson, Joe & Molly Drago, Tom & Sally Aman, Leonard & Pat Paquette, Franklin Gage, Mike and Dawn Curry with their daughter (Jessica) and her boyfriend (Nathan) Dan Barbeau from the Chevrolet Club, And of course, Deb and me. After a brief driver’s meeting we headed on down Rt 29 towards the town of Madi-son. Even though this part of the drive was on busy four-lane highway, it is still quite a pretty route. After passing through Madi-son, we turned onto Rt 230 and headed to the Roaring 20’s Antique Auto Museum in the bustling burg of Hood, population – not many. Roaring 20’s is a family owned museum founded by John Dudley in 1967. John

was a long time member of the AACA and had amassed a large collection of cars, tractors, small engines, and antiques. Since his death, his wife and his daughter, Martha, have run the museum. Martha pro-vided a tour of the museum and gave us a lot of insight into the history of the museum and the cars. Of course, there are things for sale (cars, car parts, and antiques) and several of our members, my wife included, left with bulging bags of “stuff.” More infor-mation on the museum can be found at http://www.roaring-twenties.com/index.htm. After bidding goodbye to Martha and her mother, we made a short stop at Yoder’s Country Market (http://www.yoderscountrymarket.net/) for some home made Mennonite goodies. Very interesting store which reminded me of many of the places we have been to in Lancaster County, Pa. Then it was on to Graves Mountain Lodge (http://www.gravesmountain.com/) in Syria for lunch. Did I say lunch? More like a feast. Served family style, we had moun-tains of meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh lima beans and succotash, bread, salad, apple butter, and dessert. It was almost too much to handle although I managed to wolf down two good helpings of everything and a third of a few select items. While at lunch, we helped Eck cele-brate his 85th birthday with a cupcake and candle. There was much cheering and ap-plause all around.

After lunch, no one felt like jumping in their cars and heading off, so we relaxed in the rocking chairs on the front porch of the lodge. Some sat in the sun and chatted while others stayed in the shade. I think a few even took a short snooze. I occupied myself by taking lots of photos. Once eve-ryone had recharged, we headed off to our last stop, Sperryville. Sperryville has undergone the same prob-lems that many small towns have in the current economy with people leaving, busi-nesses closing, etc. But a group of dedi-cated townspeople are attempting to re-make the historic downtown of Sperryville with several new restaurants, galleries, and antique shops. So far they are doing quite well. When we arrived in town, a local car show held at the fire house was just breaking up and we were treated to an impromptu pa-rade of cars down Mainstreet. Most people

took off in different directions and headed home when they were ready. Of course, Deb had to do her part to aid the local economy and purchased several items from several of the local shops. Of course, no trip to Sperryville is complete without visiting the old Sperryville Emporium. Alas, the Emporium’s glory days are over and the owner is selling off inventory with plans to eventually sell and shut down. Another old favorite will probably soon bite the dust. By the time Deb and I climbed back into the Galaxie, everyone had headed home (although Franklin did stay with us till the bitter end). We headed up Rt 211 to War-renton where we picked up Rt 29 to Gainesville and on to home in Centreville. Everyone had a great time. The day was perfect and the company was outstanding. We’ll have to do something similar again. Perhaps in the Fall? More photos of the Tour can be found at: http://rides.webshots.com/album/571466219Mztbxw

Get Well Wishes Ken Farley had problems at the Spring Meet at Charlotte, NC. He was hospitalized, had sur-gery due to colon blockage, was there a couple of weeks. A few days after being home, he was in lot of pain went to see his doctor had x-rays it showed three more restrictions, he is now on a liquid diet, waiting for results from a CT Scan. If more surgery is needed he will have to wait a couple more weeks to get healed from the April surgery. Brian Danzig—things went well at Fairfax Hospital he meet with the Surgeon to get a date for surgery, to repair the leak in the J-Pouch and to have the plastic surgeon put his stomach mus-cles back in One piece. The surgery should happen sometime in June. If the surgery goes well he should be able to get reconnected around September. Over all he says there is more good days than bad. He took the Buick for a quick trip around the neighborhood. Hope all members are feeling good Condolences Joe and Molly Drago on the loss of a first cousin Betty, her husband William and their two daughters Stephanie and Catherine. The New York family found dead in a hotel room in Tow-son, Maryland.

God Bless All Keep all in your prayers
