2013 ECVA Jr Women's Championship
Coaches primed for ECVA Junior Women’s showdown
GROS ISLET, St Lucia, August 21- Antigua and
Barbuda, French St Martin, St Vincent and the
Grenadines and host St Lucia battle for honours in
the Eastern Caribbean Vollleyball Association
(ECVA) Junior Women’s championships, which
serve off on Thursday morning at the Beausejour
Multi- purpose Indoor Facility.
The opening round of matches pit French St Martin
versus Antigua, then the battle of the Windward
Islands neighbours- St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia.
And, before the first whistle has been sounded, all for team coaches are eagerly anticipating what their
respective charges will deliver on the court.
On his debut outing with a junior team- Antigua and Barbuda’s Esron Gittens is bubbly as the start of the
competition counts down.
“They have been training hard for the past months and I expect much from them ….Our team has been
bonding pretty well “, Gittens stated.
The Antigua and Barbuda head coach reckoned that host St Lucia will be their toughest opponent.
Expressing conservatism- stand in coach of French St Martin- Belinda Browne said her players are simply
going to take the court with a positive frame of mind and “give of their best “.
But coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines outfit- Eardley Martin was more forthright in his
assessment of his team’s chances.
Martin is basing his prospects on the fact that the Vincentians are fresh from competing in the annual
Windward Islands schools competition and would have seen what the St Lucians have an offer .
Martin, whilst anticipating his team to be a force, acknowledged that the other three and worthy
opponents, especially St Lucia.
And, Florian Combie head coach of the St Lucia, thinks his team could make it to the final.
Not getting too ahead of himself, Combie said: “ We think we came reach the finals and we will see how
it goes from there”.
Assessing his team’s preparations, Combie advanced: “….. We are just out of the Windward Islands
school tournament which the core of our players participated and won the championships, so our
prospects look good”.
Following the round robin format- the first and second places battle for top honours, while the other
two seek the third place.
