Safe Places Sharing Events
Safe Places is a scheme to provide safe places in thecommunity where people with learning disabilities can go
if they get into trouble or feel unsafe, frightened or bullied.
We know that there is a lot of good work going on in theNorth East and Yorkshire and Humber and we will behaving two events where people can share what ishappening in their area.
We have asked some people to tell us about their Safe
Places schemes and what has made it a success.

Justice for LBSouthern Health Admits
Breaches
Justice for LB a campaign following the death of Connor
Sparrowhawk who died on 4th July 2013 when he was
being looked after by the short term assessment and
treatment unit at Slade House.
Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust have admitted
they breached Connor Sparrowhawks human rights and
that it caused his death.

They have accepted full responsibility for the death of
Connor and has admitted that it was negligent andviolated both Connors and his familys human rights and
did not give Connor the care the Law says it should
They have said that
They should have kept Connor alive.
Connor died when people made mistakes and they
should have not made those mistakes
There was problems in the way the unit and trust
was run
Verita and independent company who look at howproblems in health trusts said
Connor should have been kept safe
Connor should not have died
The care was not good enough
The trust did not treat Connors Epilepsy properly
The trust agrees that Verita are right
The Inquest into how Connor died found some things that
the Unit did wrong.

Connor suffered neglect because the doctors did not
help people to do a good job
The nurses did not have enough training for Epilepsy
Staff did not think about the risks to Connor
Staff did not talk or listen to Connors family about his
Epilepsy

Tell Us What You Think Event
NHS England is writing four new guides forcommissioners to help people with a learning disability
and/or autism with mental health difficulties or behaviour
that challenges.
The guides will help commissioners buy good services for
people with a learning disability to be well supported to
help them to live at home rather than in hospitals.
NHS England want to co- produce the guides with people
easy read draft guides will be sent to people before the
events. People will then tell NHS England what they think
about the guides at the event.
There will be 2 morning workshops and 2 afternoonworkshops. You can pick one in the morning and one in
the afternoon to attend.

people in the community who might need a bit extrasupport

Mainstream services(Liaison function)Have more
people trained in learning disability so that people with a
learning disability can use mainstream services

Public TransportHave your say in Newcastle
Nexus is carrying out a survey from the 6 thJune until the
1st
August.
This survey is to collect the views from people who use
their services and to help them understand how people
access public transport and what is important to them.

Bradford Council are having an open day to provide
information about the changes that could be made to
increase your contribution charges to care this could
double using all of peoples spare income to fund carecosts.

FUNDING: bringing neighbourhoods together
The Near Neighbours programme is offering small grants
of between 250 and 5,000 as funding for local groupsand organisations working to bring together neighbours,
and to develop relationships across diverse faiths and
ethnicities to improve their communities.
The Fund is available in areas that are multi-religious and
multi-ethnic within specific parishes in Oldham andBurnley; Leeds, Bradford and Dewsbury; Birmingham,
Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Walsall and Dudley; Leicester
and Nottingham; Luton; and across most of London.
Projects must bring together peoples of two or more
different faiths and/or ethnicities to build friendships anddevelop relationships of trust. This is a rolling programme
that is expected to run until November.

Training Events
The transforming care North East and Cumbria team are
holding some events following the Shaping the Marketevent that took place in May.

They have asked that group providers and commissionersselect an event in the area that they provide or

Autistic Spectrum Disorders Toolkit Launch
The Royal College of General Practitioners has launched
a new autistic spectrum disorders toolkit.
This toolkit is designed to provide easily accessible up todate information on autism.
The toolkit supports primary health care professionals,
patients and carers to manage autism in primary care.

Boost Project Launch in the North East
Endeavour have launched a project in the North Eastfunded by the Big Lottery.
The project called BOOST works with young people aged18 to 25 years with mild to moderate learning difficulties.
The aim of the project is to provide young people with theskills, confidence and support to enhance their options forthe world of paid or voluntary work.
A person centred programme to develop personal andsocial development and add skills and knowledge.This programme helps employability and prospects for the
future lives of young people
