Bonjour tout le monde et bonne année!! I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and are now settling infor a relaxing winter season. As I write this message, I am sitting in the Principal’s chair at DorvalElementary where I am filling in until the end of January. It is lovely to be back in a school settingwhich is what I most missed upon retirement but it is also nice to know that the time will soon comethat I am retired again.

Je voulais prendre le temps de remercier ceux et celles qui ont appuyé nos collègues encore au travailpendant les demonstrations devant des écoles ou durant les journées de grève. I spoke at two eventson strike days and brought your support and good wishes to those present. I was told by many teach-ers how much our involvement meant to them in their battle with the government over contract ne-gotiations. Alors, bravo à vous toutes et tous!!

In November 2015, at our Annual General meeting, we accepted two constitutional amendments al-lowing for anyone elected to office as President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer to continue formore than 2 years in any post and also to change the term of office for the Past President to only 1year after the election of a new president. With those changes, it was possible to accept the followingpeople for the posts of:

President: Jan Langelier Vice President: Tania Kinsella

Secretary: Janice Tessier- Murray Treasurer: Robin Narsted

The elected Executive then agreed to name the following people to the extended Executive:

Lois Maeder- Alves – Membership

Tricia Roet – Newsletter Editor

I would like to thank the following members of the Executive who will be stepping down after servingus well over the years: Mary Anne Bindner, Maureen Howlett, Hanns and Mickey Wernecke, DanielAbergel, Bryden Murray and Russ Kelly. As you see, there are many people from our association who

The Original Book Club The original Book Club begins 2016 with Elena Ferrrante’s My Brilliant Friend, the first of her Neapolitan Novels, which trace the complex relationship between two girls born in the same year in a violent working-class neighbourhood of Naples who become “friends” and who continue to cause each other suffering right up to the present day. February’s selection, winner ofthe Man Booker Prize in 2015, is A Brief History of Seven Killings, by Marlon James. This story explores the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in 1976 and its aftermath through the crack wars in New York City in the 1980’s and a changed Jamaica in the 1990’s. March’s book, Orphan Train, is by Christina Baker Kline. Between 1854 and 1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of east coast America to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by pure luck. April’s choice is The Illegal, by Lawrence Hill. Like every boy on the impoverished island of Zantorland, running is all Keita’s ever wanted to do. Running means riches and respect – until, because of his father’s outspoken political views, Keita must run for his life. In May, we’ll wind up our year with Laline Paull’s The Bees, which follows Flora 717, a sanitation worker doomed by her birth to the lowest caste of her community. She is ugly and large -- and, yes, a bee! A story told from the point of view of an insect is a first for us. Who knows what we’ll choose next year? Maybe Fifteen Dogs, by André Alexis? For more information, contact Susan Somerville at: susansomerville8@ sympatico.ca.

Welcome to a new year and a new ski season! The snowstorm we had De-cember 29th got our ski season going “from 0 to 100” in the space of a fewhours. On January 7th, four of us took advantage of the good conditions and skied the Rabbit atBois-de-Liesse. Unfortunately the torrential rain on the Sunday put our fledgling ski season onhold. We are anxiously awaiting more snow in the coming days and hope to resume skiing theweek of January 18th.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I will email everyone a day or two in advance to advisewhere we will be skiing that week. For the moment, Tuesdays are out for me because that iswhen I ski with Rod Roy. If you have not received my emails regarding cross country skiing andwould like your name added to the list, please email me at: [email protected]

Hope to see you on the trails! Mary Anne Bindner

Book Club II 6.We had a lovely dinner at my house in December. The challenge this year was to

be a character from a book, or an author. Several people thought that the challenge wasto be a book we had read and that was a lot of fun as well. It took longer to solve ouridentities. Over Coq-au-vin with rice, delicious salads and cake we had a great discussionabout The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, a story that took place in 1600's Holland.

We went on to read His Whole Life by Elizabeth Hay and had our meeting at Bev Daye'swhere we were greeted with a panoramic scene of the main setting in the book, amiddelicious Christmas goodies. We found it a very sensitive story woven into the secondreferendum in Quebec.

We are revisiting Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin for our February meeting and willmove on to any Agatha Chrisite novel of our choice for March before we visitthe Agatha Christie exhibition at Pointe-à-Callières Museum to celebrate her125th year.

Wednesday is card day for L’ARSE. Every sec-ond Wednesday afternoon at 1:30, the CasualBridge Group meets at the home of our won-derful hostess, Lorraine Pawlusiak. We havesome thirty members but usually have be-tween eight and sixteen players on any givenday. Some of us are quite experienced whileothers may be relative newcomers to thegame.

We change partners every four hands and ro-tate in and out if we are an odd number ofplayers. Because we discuss bidding strategies, allow newcomers to watch and then partnerthem with more experienced members, theCasual Bridge Group is an excellent place tolearn the game. Because it is a great group ofpeople and a warm and friendly atmosphere, more experienced players keep coming.

While every session has memorable events, itshould be noted that Louise Chalmers of JohnRennie Theatre fame bid and made two grandslams in one afternoon. Way to go Louise!

We always have fun. We welcome new partici-pants..there is always room! If you are inter-ested in joining us, please contact Pam Greevyat [email protected].

CanastaThe canasta group continues to meet everysecond Wednesday at my home, although wetook a break over the holiday season thisyear. The group numbers have remained sta-ble and we usually have somewhere between12 and 16 players, all bemoaning the fact thatthe 7’s are in short supply. If you want to un-derstand this “inside joke”, feel free to join usand see what it is all about. Newcomers arealways welcome. You can learn to play thegame in one afternoon and join in the fun.

Please contact me at [email protected] you would like to join us or get further in-formation.

The l'ARSE Summer golf group completed another successfulseason on the links! We altered our format to offer nine holes every second week and eighteen holesevery week. We welcomed a number of new members who were great additions to our weeklyoutings. Again this summer, we were fortunate to have experienced great weather on Mondays andhad few cancellations due to rain. On a personal level, I would like to thank Bryden Murray forstepping in and organizing June and July trips while I was in BC on family matters. It has been our intent to make the LARSE golf groups a social activity for those participating and not acompetitive experience. We try to visit courses around the region that would not necessarily be fre-quented by our members.

The late spring cut into our season and narrowed the choice of courses but we played into October be-fore calling it a season. The highlight of our season is the School's Open Open (held on the first day ofclasses in the Fall) which involves a round of golf followed by a potluck supper gathering hosted byJanice Tessier-Murray and Bryden, in their beautiful backyard. This is always a wonderful event allow-ing us to socialize even further than we normally would.

TRAVEL TALK GROUP MEETING

The meeting of the Travel Talk Group which took place on October 21st, 2015 was well attended and mostinteresting. We met at the Sequoia Restaurant which is a comfortable and pleasant venue. Fourteen mem-bers came to join us for lunch. After lunch, we met in the upstairs meeting room of the restaurant. EighteenLarse members were present.

We had two presenters : Brenda Henry and Bob Morrison. Brenda Henry has followed her own advice as anEnglish teacher and has written and published some of the most delightful travel stories in “ You lost ! Getoff bus now ! “ Brenda gave a reading of some of those interesting stories. She shared some delightfulanecdotes and stories about travelling with her husband Phil to Florida, Brazil, Scandinavia, the Cook Is-lands and Hungary.

Bob Morrison prepared a power point presentation on the fifteen days full transit cruise of the PanamaCanal from Fort Lauderdale to San Diego. Bob and his wife Jean sailed on Celebrity's Infinity, a true Pana -max ship. In addition to the day-long transit, the ports of call included Cartagena, Colon, Panama,Guatemala and two days in Mexico for stops in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. Bob documented theirlovely trip with beautiful pictures.

The next meeting of the Travel Talk Group will take place next October. More details will follow. MickeyWernecke & Daniel Abergel

The Fall brought better weather on Tuesdays to allow us to have more consistency with our trips. The late Fall foliage didn't allow us the time for our usual Petit Train du Nord trip this year butgave us some great days nonetheless. We wrapped up with a luncheon on November 17th, but re-ally could have kept going into December this year. However, numbers were dropping by Novem-ber. I was able to cycle (individually) up to Dec. 28th.

We look forward to the Spring and usually get underway in April. I usually send out the email noti-fication as the snow clears. Possible new joiners can email me at [email protected] for infor-mation

FISHING

It was raining hard and a big puddle had formed in front of the little Scottish pub. An oldman stood beside the puddle holding a stick with a string on the end and jiggled it up anddown in the water. A curious gentleman asked what he was doing.'Fishing,' replied the old man. 'Poor old fool' thought the gentleman, so he invited the old man to have a drink in the pub.Feeling he should start some conversation while they were sipping their whiskey, thegentleman asked, 'And how many have you caught today’? “ You're the seventh ! ”

Tania Kinsella

Tania (Smirnoff) Kinsella started her teaching career at Beacon Hill Elementary in1974. She taught grade five immersion classes and greatly enjoyed teaching at theelementary level. “I was told that if I wanted to meet a man I had to move to thehigh school level or become our union representative. I did both those things andended up at John Rennie High School teaching Cycle One regular French. That iswhere I met the love of my life, Don Kinsella, a guidance counsellor at John Rennie. We married and kept working at the same school.”

Tania and Don had two children, Melanie and Christopher. Tania stayed home from thebirth of Melanie until Christopher went to kindergarten. Both would later attend JohnRennie, making it a very important place for the whole family. “I greatly enjoyed thetime I spend at home! I returned to Rennie and served as a Cycle One DepartmentCoordinator for many years which gave me a balance of teaching, mentoring andworking with the administrators.” As well as regular, immersion, and enriched French,Tania taught history, geography, Spanish, moral and religious instruction, math andresource. “I loved my job! I love teaching; it was something I always wanted to dofrom the time I was very young.”

Tania retired in June 2011. “My life, as I knew it, changed completely at that point asmy husband, Don, passed away on July 11 from complications with his cancer. I de-cided to follow Don’s suggestion and embrace my retirement.” Tania decided to learnhow to curl and has been curling for five years (“This year I finally got the hang ofit!”). She also took up biking, (“not seriously enough”). She dabbled with golfing,(“but do not have any talent in that area”). She now is a regular at the gym.

“One place where I found tremendous camaraderie and support and a variety of ac-tivities to join was through the retired teachers association L’ARSE. I learned to playcanasta and dabbled with bridge, joined the book club, cycling club and theatregroup. I joined the Executive in 2012 as Co-Editor of this newsletter. In 2013 I be-came Secretary and now, in 2015, have been elected as Vice-President. I have keptbusy in my retirement with travel, new friends, old friends, work outs, new activitiesand great discoveries.”

MIKE KIRK

If you’ve been lately to a monthly L’ARSE luncheon you’ll know that there isalways a ticket raffle with two winners, the first receiving half the pot and thesecond choosing a charity to which the other half of the pot is sent. This verypopular feature was the brainchild of L’ARSE Executive member, Mike Kirk.

Mike grew up in Pointe-Claire and went to St.Thomas High School. An excellentbaseball player, he went on to umpire baseball up to the junior provincial level. He was chosen to umpire national championships at three different levels.

Mike was a support staff member at Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School forthirty-five years, doing a number of varied jobs over the years. Since retiring in2009, he continues to coach softball and touch football at the school. He alsoorganizes monthly breakfasts for P.C.H.S. retirees.

Mike always looks forward to golfing with the, “diehard L’ARSE retirement group”and organizes their winter time indoor virtual golf games. At the L’ARSE Manoirbreakfasts he passes the hat for loonie and toonie contributions which go to WestIsland Community Shares. Mike enjoys travelling with his (“much”) better half,Debby, who is jealous of Mike’s retirement activities.

Blonde in churchAn Alabama pastor said to his congregation, "Someone in this congregation has spread arumor that I belong to the Ku Klux Klan. This is a horrible lie and one which a Christiancommunity cannot tolerate. I am embarrassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, Iwant the party who said this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christianfamily. No one moved.

The preacher continued, "Do you have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood?Remember, you will be forgiven and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand andconfess your transgression."Again, all was quiet.

Then, slowly, a drop-dead gorgeous blonde with a body that would stop a runaway trainrose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke"Reverend there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member ofthe Ku Klux Klan.

I simply told a couple of my friends that you were a wizard under the sheets."The preacher fell to his knees, his wife fainted, and the congregation roared.

Irish Viagra

An Irish woman of advanced age visited her physician to ask his advice in reviving herhusband's libido.. 'What about trying Viagra?' asked the doctor. 'Not a chance', she said.'He won't even take an aspirin.' 'Not a problem,' replied the doctor. 'Give him an 'IrishViagra'. It's when you drop the Viagra tablet into his coffee. He won't even taste it. Give it atry and call me in a week to let me know how things went.'

It wasn't a week later when she called the doctor, who directly inquired as to her progress. The poor dear exclaimed, 'Oh, faith, bejaysus and begorrah! T'was horrid! Just terrible, doctor!' 'Really? What happened?' asked the doctor. 'Well, I did as you advised and slippedit in his coffee and the effect was almost immediate. He jumped straight up, with a twinklein his eye and with his pants a-bulging fiercely! With one swoop of his arm, he sent mecups and tablecloth flying, ripped me clothes to tatters and took me then and therepassionately on the tabletop! It was a nightmare, I tell you, an absolute nightmare!' 'Whyso terrible?' asked the doctor, 'Do you mean the sex your husband provided wasn't good?''Feckin jaysus, 'twas the best sex I've had in 25 years!
