The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts On the day of Epiphany, the optional announcement of the dates of Easter and other moveable feasts of the liturgical year was proclaimed at the principal Mass. Like the Christmas Proclamation, it is all about time. But where the Christmas Proclamation situated the birth of Christ in historic time, chromos time, this proclamation reminds us that salvation is happening here and now, kairos time. This proclamation is fascinating and rich in meaning. It originated during a time when people did not have calendars in their homes, and it was their only way of learning the all-important date of Easter. It has a much deeper meaning as well. The liturgical year is not just a series of dates and holy days of obligation. According to the proclamation, the liturgy is the manifest presence of the Lord among us. It begins by connecting the joy of Christmas to the glory of Easter. In a sense, everything is Easter, for when the Church celebrates the feasts of Mary, the apostles and saints, and even all souls, we are also recalling the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. The proclamations end by acclaiming Jesus, who is Lord of time and history—a powerful time and a fitting thing to remember at the beginning of the year.

Why do Catholics offer Masses for the dead? When we die in God’s friendship we eventually go to Heaven, but if we haven’t properly atoned for certain sins we have to be purified in Purgatory first. We pray for the souls in Purgatory to help them pass through faster than they would otherwise. Please email your Mass Intention requests to: [email protected].
