The Alpha and the Omega – Part 11: The Resurrection

I recall once when I was teaching, either a class at MACC, or a session for an RCIA class, and I was talking about the uniqueness of the Christian faith. I was saying that only in Christianity does God come down to us. In all other religious traditions, it is a matter of humanity reaching up to God. I also said that Jesus is the only person in all of history who was resurrected.

At that point, someone in the class brought up the case of Lazarus. “Didn’t Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead?” this person asked.

Yes, Jesus raised Lazarus, called him to come forth from the tomb, directed that his burial cloth be removed and gave him his life back. The key words there are “gave him his life back.” It is more accurate to say that Lazarus was resuscitated, rather than resurrected. What’s the difference?

Even though, as we’re told in John 11 that Lazarus had been dead four days—a long time in terms of resuscitation—what Jesus did was to give Lazarus his old life back. Jesus returned Lazarus to the life he once knew and had.

That meant several things: First, Lazarus was still, or once again, mortal. He was once again subject to illness, injury and death. Although I’m sure Lazarus was grateful, he knew he would have to go through the act of dying second time.

Secondly, Lazarus was still fallen, and subject to sin. He would still have to confess his sins and seek absolution. Reconciliation was one of the first sacraments ministered by the early Church.

Thirdly, Lazarus was again earth-bound and not yet in the Kingdom of Heaven. While Jesus was still among the people at that time, they and Lazarus had direct access to Him. But after Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension, he would again be living in such a way that his access to God is mediated. Any access to God is good, but direct and unimpeded access to God is what He truly wants and offers us.

This is the true meaning of resurrection. When Jesus was resurrected, He did not get His old life back, as good as that was, but He then entered into His Glory. Entering into the Glory of God is what our resurrection means for us as well.

We will no longer be mortal. Our lives will have no terminus, no end point. We will no longer be subject to sickness, injury or death. We will be in the Lord’s immediate presence with nothing coming between us.

The Greeks have two different words for the English word “life”. One is bios and the other is zoe. Bios refers to the physical principle of life that all living things have a share in: microbes, bacteria, plants, insects, fish, wildlife and humans. It is where we get the world “biology”. Zoe, on the other hand, refers to spiritual life, but in the special case of Jesus, it means His kind of life: divine life, holy life, eternal life. It is this kind of life to which Jesus refers when He says in John chapter 6, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.”

It is to this kind of life, Divine Life, that we will be resurrected because Jesus was first resurrected Himself, and has promised us that He will raise us up likewise on the Last Day. To be continued . . .

. . ¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones! En JesúsEn JesúsEn JesúsEn Jesús Padre DavidPadre DavidPadre DavidPadre David
