Congressman John Tierney appeared on a special edition of the BACC’s monthly public affairs program, Chamber Chat, on Tuesday, August 30 th . “The Congressman provided a seasoned and insightful perspective on the current tenor of Washington politics and the challenges legislators face to find common ground on a number of critical issues including , education, healthcare, veterans benefits, and job creation initiatives”, said Jim Murphy, BACC President and CEO. According to Congressman Tierney, one of the challenges in moving legisla- tion forward is an “erosion in a belief of compromise. There is an element in Congress that does not believe in give and take.” He does feel that there has been progress in making colleges more afforda- ble as a result of recent legislation. “Cutting-out the middle man” on stu- dent loans has saved close to 63 million of costs to students and families. By making the loans directly to students and their families there is greater transparency and more funding options. The two key issues for Congress and the country continue to be jobs and health care, especially benefits for veterans and their families. The Congressman believes the Recovery and Reinvestment Act has created new jobs and retained existing jobs but much more is needed. He emphasizes that the role of government should not be to provide jobs but to support the creation of jobs. One important initiative toward meeting this goal is working with community colleges to design courses that meet the growing needs of the technology and health care industries. “We need to get back in the game and provide programs that train people for basic research and development - an role that was historically American but is now controlled by China and Germany”. Regarding the health care industry’s concern of possible cuts to medical research and training, Congressman Tierney states that the Massachusetts Delegation is pushing back on any cuts to these areas and believes that in Lahey’s new president, Dr Grant, “we have a smart and well-respected advocate and one to whom both Governor Patrick and Congress will listen. Dr Grant has a good way of looking at the business aspects of health care “. (Chamber Chat is a monthly show produced by the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. Congressman John Tierney appeared on a special edition of the BACC’s monthly public affairs program, Chamber Chat, on Tuesday, August 30th . “The Congressman provided a seasoned and insightful perspective on the current tenor of Washington politics and the challenges legislators face to find common ground on a number of critical issues including , education, healthcare, veterans benefits, and job creation initiatives”, said Jim Murphy, BACC President and CEO.

According to Congressman Tierney, one of the challenges in moving legisla-tion forward is an “erosion in a belief of compromise. There is an element in Congress that does not believe in give and take.”

He does feel that there has been progress in making colleges more afforda-ble as a result of recent legislation. “Cutting-out the middle man” on stu-dent loans has saved close to 63 million of costs to students and families.
