For 23 years, it’s been one of the
premier events in BC’s residential
construction industry: a province-
wide competition where builders, devel-
opers, renovators, and marketers vie for
top honours in more than 40 categories.
And on February 27, 2015, the celebra-
tion of the 2014 Georgie Awards was
no exception. More than 500 industry
members and experts gathered to fi nd
out who was the best of the best in BC.
Entries were up by 30 per cent over
the previous year, so the three-day judg-
ing process was intense. As always, the
judges were industry experts who come
from outside BC to ensure the anonymity
of each entry during the competition.
“No matter where I travel, the profes-
sionalism I see from our BC builders is
unparalleled,” said Rob Capar, imme-
diate past-president of the Canadian
Home Builders’ Association-BC (CHBA-
BC) in his opening remarks to gala.
And as the evening progressed, that
professionalism, innovation and sheer
creativity drew enthusiastic cheers and
more than the occasional “wow” from
the gathered crowd.
And the Winners Are…The undisputed leader at the 2014
Georgie Awards was North Vancouver’s
Naikoon Contracting Ltd., which struck
gold a total of seven times including
being named Custom Home Builder
of the Year. Four of Naikoon’s seven
awards were for Midori Uchi(picture
left), an exquisite infi ll property with
Japanese design infl uences, state-of-the-
art technology, and “out of the box”
thinking that meant all wood used was
100 per cent reclaimed. Midori Uchi
also lays claim to being not only the only
Metro Vancouver house to incorporate a
rammed earth wall but also one of only
a handful in the Lower Mainland to boast
net-zero energy use.
Long time Georgie heavyweight Adera
garnered fi ve Georgies spanning three
communities: Breeze(picture right), Sail
and remix. Located in South Surrey,
UBC and North Vancouver respectively,
these developments showcased Adera’s
commitment to great design and livable
homes – a combination that helped them
snag two Grand Georgie Awards: the
prestigious Multi-Family Home Builder
of the Year and Residential Community
of the Year for Sail.
Hot on their heels with four awards –
including Single Family Production Home
Builder of the Year – was Richmond-
based Portrait Homes. Hampstead 2 at
Silver Ridge in Maple Ridge got the nod
in three categories. Each phase of this
impressive masterplanned community
has achieved a lengthy list of honours
including numerous accolades for out-
standing customer service.
Three companies came home with
three golds: Fifth Avenue Real Estate
Marketing, Sarah Gallop Design, and
relative newcomer Tavan Development
Group.
Fifth Avenue Real Estate Marketing’s
creative blend of high tech and old fash-
ioned country wowed the judges for The
Ridge at Bose Farm. This reimagining
of the historic Meadowridge Farm on
64th Avenue in Surrey is the product of
a decade of collaboration between the
Bose family who owned the property,
the City of Surrey and a dedicated group
of heritage restoration experts. Awards
included Marketing Campaign of the
Year and B est Sales Centre.
Proving the breadth of their talent,
Tavan’s wins included renovation, mar-
keting and custom home building cat-
egories – from an über-sophisticated,
7,300-square-foot Shaughnessy man-
sion to a Port Moody townhouse make-
over costing under $100,000.
Other winners included: Concert
Properties for the Salt high-rise in down-
town Vancouver; My House Design/
Build, which was named Residential
Renovator of the Year; and Vancouver
Island’s TS Williams Construction, which
took home two awards including Best
Outdoor Living Space.
